Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood Brings Orchestral Work to New York

While Radiohead continue to toil on the long-awaited follow-up to 2003’s Hail to the Thief, the band’s lead guitarist/multi-instrumentalist Jonny Greenwood will see an orchestral piece he wrote in 2004 come to life in the U.S. for the first time. Greenwood penned Popcorn Superhet Receiver when he was the BBC Concert Orchestra’s Composer in Residence. The work, which was first performed in England in April 2005, will make it’s U.S. orchestral debut at New York’s St. Paul the Apostle on January 16-17 as part of the Wordless Music Series via a thirty-four-piece string orchestra. Radiohead have adapted an orchestral piece by Greenwood for the band in the past (”Arpeggi”), so perhaps the audience will be hearing a potential album track.

does anyone know when the new radiohead album comes out?

seth | 8/8/2007, 12:57 am EST

These guys are killllllling me lol. I’m sure the next album will be worth the wait though.

CurtMayfield | 8/8/2007, 8:42 am EST

I wish more artists would experiment with classical/orchestral music. Doesn’t mean they have to give up Rock n’ Roll, it just would be nice to listen to what some of these guys come up with. Its like Costello’s Juliet Letters, it can be done.

Check out Terry Bozzios “Chamber Works” for some rocked out chamber music.

LASGAMES | 8/8/2007, 8:47 am EST

too bad these guys hav’nt done anything since”ok computer” seems thier more obsessed in turning off thier fan base more than anything else to fall out of that old rock star cliche.

jay | 8/8/2007, 9:26 am EST

your an idiot Lasgames.

J | 8/8/2007, 9:34 am EST

They’re killing me with this. When’s the new album coming out? What’s the title? YOU’RE KILLING ME, GREENWOOD!!

abandonedstation | 8/8/2007, 10:20 am EST

for those who think radiohead dumped guitars after OK Computer, get your hands on the song ‘2+2=5′ (from 2003’s Hail to the Thief). Or ‘Myxomatosis’ from the same album.

marnr67 | 8/8/2007, 12:25 pm EST

um idk… last time i checked Myxomatosis is almost entirely synthesizers.

although your point is valid.

jimmy | 8/8/2007, 1:43 pm EST

best band in the world…doesnt matter if they play a kazoo, a guitar, or a stick and trash can.

Max Power(dynamic,isn't it) | 8/8/2007, 2:34 pm EST

Radiohead, load of crap!Na,just kidding, get me to that fucking venue, bus driver.

Mean Mr. Mustard... | 8/8/2007, 2:35 pm EST

What are you guys talkin about? Just watch a live video of the band on YouTube and you’ll see how guitar awesome they (especially Jonny) are! To say shite like that is just sad and pathetic…

also, I cant wait for LP7 any more… I want it NOW

Neil | 8/8/2007, 3:32 pm EST

Their new stuff seems to be pretty guitar oriented.

Chuck | 8/8/2007, 4:10 pm EST

Nice. I need some LP7 though…NEED!!!!

Yarbles | 8/8/2007, 5:54 pm EST

“…will make it’s U.S. orchestral debut…”

Ian st.ian | 8/8/2007, 8:56 pm EST

Johnny Greenwood’s one hell of a musician, when’s the Bodysong DVD gonna be shipped over that long, cold, deep, dark ocean separating me from actually seeing it?!(I’m from the states,as you can tell from my complete lack of sophistication).

Open Pick Of The Liffey | 8/11/2007, 11:22 pm EST

I was just talking to Thom the other day in the coffee shop. He told me that Open Pick was going to be the first track on LP7. He said he thought the band really nailed it in Philadelphia in America. I downloaded that show the next day, and he was right. I was on business in the third world duing the entire 06 tour, so I could not make it to any of the shows. Hope to catch some shows in Europe on their next tour. Thom also told me that Open Pick is the sexiest, most soulful song they have ever done. Good luck to Johnny in NYC!!!!
