Last night we caught up with Lil Mama — queen of “Lip Gloss,” our song of the summer — in Harlem, filming a video for her new song, the ferocious “G-Slide.” 138th St. and Lennox was closed off to traffic, and filled with tons of kids dancing and singing, soaking in the midsummer night air. The teenage rapper — dressed in a yellow, glittery New York Yankees hat and baggy faded jeans with rhinestone on the back pockets — was a big mama on the set, yelling “cut!,” taking pictures with her friends, throwing up peace signs and eating Starbursts.
Despite all the bravado, Lil Mama was a gracious hostess, displaying a poise that belied her seventeen years; she was flattered that Avril Lavigne used her recent remix of “Girlfriend.” When asked, she also said she doesn’t have a boyfriend, and replied, “Can I be your girlfriend?” which was exciting for your Rock Daily reporter. When we asked her what’s next, all five feet and two inches of Lil Mama leaned in close to the tape recorder, and said, with a voice descending deeper and deeper as if she were narrating Stephen King’s newest horror film, “What’s next is above and beyond your wildest dreams.” We’ll take her word for it.
