Lauryn Hill Shocks Fans With Two-Hour-Plus Career-Spanning Brooklyn Concert

Last night at Brooklyn, New York’s Wingate Field, a crowd of thousands was braced for a major event. Lauryn Hill was playing a free concert in Crown Heights on a muggy summer’s night just weeks after both of her Fugee bandmates had gone to the press complaining that she is the reason their reunion is falling apart.

There were so many questions hovering in the humidity based on her erratic performances of the past few years. Would Hill show up? How late would she be? Would she wear a crazy outfit, or fall down or go off on a rant? Some of the thousands waiting to find out had been lined up since early in the afternoon. Hundreds who showed up too late were milling about outside the gates, while at the back gate, Hill’s older brother tried to get a crew of family members inside. “I’m Lauryn Hill’s brother,” he told the guard. “Well, that’s unfortunate,” security responded, staring in his face. “You’re going to have to prove it.” Soon, the Hill family was whisked backstage, as Senator Charles Schumer made his way out. Out on the sidewalk, people were pressed up against the fences. Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz appeared onstage, promising the audience, “Lauryn Hill is here. She’s here, that’s the most important thing.”

When Hill did make her entrance in front of an eleven-piece band and three backup singers, her face was heavily made up, but lovely. Her afro was the color of rust, and heavy jewelry dangled everywhere. She was overdressed for the heat in a long-sleeved ruffled blouse, oversized leather fringed vest, wide-legged plaid pants and platform shoes, almost as if she was mocking someone — maybe even herself. And the music sounded like Hill looked: They were her hit songs from The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, but played over unrecognizable reggae rhythms and Afro-beat ska arrangements. She sang the favorites the crowd came to hear, but fans couldn’t sing along because they didn’t know these melodies, and because, well, Hill wasn’t even singing. She was scatting and chanting and shuffling about. She performed an energetic rendition of “Lost Ones” fused with Bob Marley’s “Natty Dread” and then “Final Hour” melded with Peter Tosh’s “Downpressor Man,” and “Zion” blended with Marley’s “Iron, Lion, Zion.” Sometimes it sounded beautiful, sometimes it sounded like babble. Each song — upbeat, percussive basslines beneath Hill’s rough, repetitive chanting — was at least ten minutes long. The crowd sat in a collective stare, not quite sure what to make of it.

“Brooklyn, y’all remember this song?” Hill asked as she introduced the unrequited-love jam “Ex Factor.” Her face was scrunched as she scatted and pleaded, “I just took your word for it, baby, I just took your word for it,” repeating the words over and over and over again. “I want you to live for me, stop your compromising, I want you to live for me.”

After a brief Bob Marley set featuring “Zimbabwe” and “Hammer,” Hill announced, “Ladies and gentlemen, my voice is strained, but I’m gonna slow it down and try to sing you this love song.” The song was Roberta Flack’s “The First Time Ever I saw Your Face,” and finally, for the first time all night, Hill sang. The crowd cheered her on enthusiastically. “I got fired because I’m missing work! I got fired because of you!” a female fan shouted, “You better bring it on! Sing me a song, baby!” As Lauryn belted out the ballad, her voice became less hoarse. Some of that rich smoothness returned.

After showing the crowd she’s still got it, Hill launched into uptempo ska versions of all of the Fugees hits from their 1996 multiplatinum breakout album The Score. Fans got on their feet, dancing along with “How Many Mics,” “Fu-Gee-La” and “Zealots,” but when she rapped, her harsh flow came out as a strange staccato stuttering. She shuffled and spun and kicked her leg high up in the air with emphasis. Though her performance was shaky, her energy never wavered. On “Ready or Not,” Hill rapped all three verses, sounding more familiar on Pras and Wyclef’s parts than her own. “Killing Me Softly” excited the audience further, and all of Winthrop Field sang along.

“Before we go, I got a question for you Brooklyn,” Hill said as she wound down. “It’s a really, really valid question.” She then sang the Shirelle’s 1960 classic “Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” perhaps testing her fans loyalty, though they were still right there with her. The two-hour-plus show closed with the forewarning but fun-loving “Doo Wop (That Thing)” and everyone’s hands darted into the air. Lauryn Hill was spinning like a funk star ruling her own little world. “Good to see you,” she said as she exited the stage, “Very good to see you!” Hill waved and waved like she didn’t want to leave. A moment later, she ducked back out with one of her sons in her arms, and waved goodbye, one last time.

Good stuff, Lauryn. Now get back into the studio with Clef and Pras. You three NEED each other.

Lauren who? Who gives a dick?

Je$$e | 8/7/2007, 11:28 am EST

what a train wreck..

“Lauren who?”

Sammy,
Learn how to spell, it is LAURYN!

Ghost Mutt | 8/7/2007, 12:06 pm EST

She and The Fugees are just overrated mainstream Hip-Hop, just as Marley is overrated mainstream reggae (well after he left Scratch anyway).

Can any Hip-Hop fan honestly say they prefer ‘The Miseducation…’ over even similar style Hip-Hop like the first De La Soul album or the Jurassic 5 EP (which I think came out the same year as ‘Miseducation,’ or at least during it’s reign), let alone true Hip-Hop that doesn’t pander to the masses with sing-along choruses and upbeat messages and blah, blah, blah.

The reunion I’m waiting for is The Wu; ‘Only Built 4 Cuban Linx 2′ and ‘8 Diagrams.’

Kevin | 8/7/2007, 12:07 pm EST

She looks like Oprah when she started her career.

David Lee Roth | 8/7/2007, 12:12 pm EST

That nutjob makes Eddie Van Halen look like Al Gore.
I even look sane compared to her!
Check me out on the Van Halen Reunion Tour with Eddie “I cured my own cancer” Van Halen, Alex “Fugly” Van Halen, and Wolfgang “Juice Box” Van Halen.

I love L. Boogie. But last night was so disappointing. She was performing for the crowed in her head. Very scattered and disconnected. I have heard her perform horse before but she stayed within her rang and it was still beautiful. Last night was anything but. L, come back!

dwt333 | 8/7/2007, 12:17 pm EST

I still love Lauryn. She is going through a bad time but will emerge triumphant. Her redemption of Roberta Flack’s “The First Time Ever I saw Your Face,” at the Brooklyn concert (free) showed that she still got what it takes to win our hearts.

Stuporfly | 8/7/2007, 12:17 pm EST

I agree with Ghost Mutt to a point. I was never a fan of the Fugees. I did, however, love Lauryn Hill’s solo debut. I’m a fan of De La Soul and the Jurassic 5 ep (plus the first two albums), and I think The Miseducation…” holds up well against the best releases of the genre.

I don’t know if that admission means I’m not a fan of “true Hip-Hop,” though I’ll also add that I love the first two Wu-Tang Clan albums as well as quite a few of the solo works from members of the group.

ROG | 8/7/2007, 12:21 pm EST

Is that Lauryn Hill or Oprah Winfrey?

evan | 8/7/2007, 12:28 pm EST

could not disagree more with the reviewer and some of the comments of people who were there. Last nights show was wonderful. Many performers change up tempos and styles of their songs(Bob Dylan anyone?) It keeps them fresh and gives them new meaning. She was far from just scatting away. She was belting it out like a true champ. The crowd was well into the show the whole time at least up front where i was. The fugees tracks were not done as ska songs. My god rolling stone, try to get a reviewer next time who actually knows music

Ghost Mutt | 8/7/2007, 12:42 pm EST

Stuporfly: By true Hip-Hop, I’m not making a very quick diversion up my own ass, I just mean in the sense that Hip-Hop at it’s best is the core of music; everything reduced to a beat (funk included). Lauryn Hill and The Fugees just don’t do it for me, unlike Rick Rubin, The Wu Tang, De La, Solesides etc.

Also Ms. Hill looks fairly mental in that photo, like she stepped out of one of George Clinton’s scarier nightmares. She could be on the cover of an album called ‘The Bride Of Dr. Funkenstein’ with her chasing a worried looking George Clinton

Wicky | 8/7/2007, 12:54 pm EST

Did anyone understand a word she was singing last night?

Jeremie | 8/7/2007, 12:59 pm EST

Lauryn Hill= Hip-Hop’s Axl Rose.

TheDude | 8/7/2007, 1:01 pm EST

so im glad im not the only one who thinks lauryn hill blows(as do the fugees). And WOW. she actually looks worse than Oprah man

bohoBK | 8/7/2007, 1:03 pm EST

i waited since 4pm and people started leaving after her first set cause she was trash

wish I was there to see L-Boogs she has gone off the deep end but still the truth

AJ | 8/7/2007, 1:17 pm EST

All of these “artists” that get huge because of great talent that wind up going crazy are goddamn spoiled morons. It pisses me off that people like Lauryn Hill still gets attention from Rolling Stone considering that she has willingly sabotaged her own career and like Pete Doherty is the next train wreck waiting to happen.

Please stop wasting text on those who don’t deserve it!

Arthur Lee | 8/7/2007, 1:31 pm EST

Saying First Time Ever I Saw Your Face is a Roberta Flack song is like saying Blowing in the Wind is a Peter Paul and Mary song. Ewan MacColl wrote it, not Roberta Flack. It is his song.

Candace | 8/7/2007, 1:38 pm EST

I was there last nite and half the songs were so hard to even sing along to. She ruined her old songs with that upbeat tempo stuff. however, ‘ex-factor’ made up for that scattered nonsense. but i still love you ms. hill!

PROTECT YA NECK | 8/7/2007, 1:41 pm EST

Can you say washed up crazy looking nutball!!! What happened to her? She looks psycho!!!!

NIKKI B | 8/7/2007, 1:46 pm EST

@Ghost Mutt you think you know Hip-Hop, and Reggea, but you don’t. It is obvious that you did some research, but in the end you really don’t know sh*t about what you speaking of!!!!!!! It takes more than research to understand, live and breathe this culture!

Jackie | 8/7/2007, 1:48 pm EST

^ Aaron, they don’t need each other. Lauryn’s solo stuff was way better than anything Fugees ever put out.

Aaron | 8/7/2007, 2:07 pm EST

Lauryn had one great solo record and has since gone crazy. Clef and Pras have remained sane but haven’t put out any decent work lately. They will keep her sane, she will reignite the fire they once had.

They need each other. I honestly can’t say I care to hear their solo projects.

Lumpy | 8/7/2007, 2:43 pm EST

Lauryn’s so cool, and she’s SUCH a talent! I just hope she doesn’t go all Whitney on us…

I hate Mike Anthony | 8/7/2007, 3:18 pm EST

She already has gonna all Whitney on you…

Liquid Feces | 8/7/2007, 3:23 pm EST

Can someone tell Lauryn Hill that Halloween is still a couple months away and she looks out of place in that clown costume.

JP | 8/7/2007, 3:41 pm EST

Lauryn Hill is an epic “Behind The Music” special that isn’t completed yet. Honestly, it’s sad. She was in my town recently. If she had her stuff together, it would have been a no-brainer to save my money and get the best seats to see her live. However, since she has been so erratic, it wasn’t worth it to buy any tickets to see her. I understand that she wants to get back on stage and perform. What she really needs is to get some professional help before she attempts a comeback. Everybody can see she still not ready to reconnect to her audience.

lucy fur | 8/7/2007, 3:43 pm EST

Who does she think she is? Miles Davis?

why is this news | 8/7/2007, 3:47 pm EST

when muse put on one of the best shows of the year in the garden last night?

DSANTOS | 8/7/2007, 3:48 pm EST

MY FRIEND JASMINE LOVES LAUREN HILL SOO MUCH… THAT SHE CAMPED OUT FROM THE NIGHT BEFORE TO GET IN THE CONCERT AND SHE DIDN’T GET IT!!!!!! I TOLD HER NOT TO GO, BECAUSE I WAS AFRAID THAT LAUREN’S CRAZY *SS WAS GOING TO SPIT ALL OVER THE CROWD!!!

Trinigirl | 8/7/2007, 3:55 pm EST

My boyfriend and I were there last night and it was horrible. After a garbled “Lost Ones”, which no one even recognized till the very end when she kept chanting “You just lost one…”, we looked around, and the crowd to the back was making its way toward the exit. A third of the crowd had left after 4 or 5 songs. And the look was not working for her…who wears red leather and a scarf in 90 degree heat plus humidity?! I think she still has that soulful poet inside of her, but she’s going through a rough patch. Everyone was mumbling that she had to be drunk or high. I prefer to give her the benefit of the doubt and wish her some inner peace. Really disappointed, but still a loyal fan!

HEIC | 8/7/2007, 3:58 pm EST

@Ghost Mutt: I actually was able to attend both Rock the Bells (with Wu as the headliners doing 8 diagram cuts)and Lauryn’s concert last night. As a hip-hop fan I have to admit to preferring Lauryn’s rabid arse to the sad ’show’ the Wu put on a few weeks ago at Randall’s Island…of course my view is colored by the inflated concert tix price but overall at least Lauryn gets what entertainment is about. Even when her execution is off she gets props for the attempt, unlike the Wu that pulled off a slight grade above a local talent show act. By the way Rage Against the Machine gave a hella better show than Wu at Rock the Bells ….

Charles | 8/7/2007, 4:26 pm EST

What many people don’t know is that she isn’t allowed to sing her songs in the traditional fashion because of record label beef. That’s why she has to do those odd live mixes.

james hetfield | 8/7/2007, 4:30 pm EST

ughhh, WHO CARES? her brand of rag-A vomitslop has no place in the eyes of people, her batshit insane ass needs to realize that it is best to leave that garbage in her head and leave the people with good memories of her in their heads.

BrooklynGal | 8/7/2007, 4:41 pm EST

Well, I was there and it hurt my feelings to watch her. It was such a dissapointment. Not to say that she didn’t put on a good show -she did a very energetic show. Just not enjoyable by her fan base. If she is restricted in how she can perform her songs, she needs to perform them in a way that is more appealing to her original fans that truly love(d) her.

Shy | 8/7/2007, 4:43 pm EST

Whitney, Lauren, Michael, Nicole, and R. Kelly all need a good old ” Get The Switch Off The Tree” butt whoopin.

babydee | 8/7/2007, 4:46 pm EST

i was very dissappointed in last nights performance… she actually scared the mess out of me and my kids.. she looked like something traight out of hells kitchen… and then what made it so bad we had to wait till 10pm for that hot mess… i want the old lauryn back or she needs to fly her scary azz back to england with her 12 piece band…

Leon | 8/7/2007, 5:31 pm EST

Lauryn is a true star , it really doesn’t matter what you demons, want to say she’s god blessed.

Erika | 8/7/2007, 5:40 pm EST

I was at the concert last night and I thought it was a hot mess. Lauryn was my first concert, so to she her at her prime and then have to experience the mess of a concert she put on last night was a big disappointment. For most of it she sounded like she was speaking in tongues and no one could understand what was going on. When i got to the concert there was a line to get in, when i was leaving the concert, 30 minutes after she started, there was a mass exit and people were in line to get out. I wish her all the best in whatever she is going through because last night was not her best work

Jeff | 8/7/2007, 6:24 pm EST

Lauryn, Whitney and Courtney need to go on tour together.

Any suggestions for what to call it?

D-ster! | 8/7/2007, 6:47 pm EST

Ms. Hill can be summed up in four small words: modern-day Nina Simone; the only exception being her body of work. During the two hour wait and the pointless, but sonically tight band warm-up, I found myself thinking of the stories my parents told me of going to see Miss Nina perform only to watch the back of her head the whole night! And while Ms. Hill, (still considered a celebrated beauty – come on, how many chocolate, big-lipped, fro’d-out sisters didn’t lift their heads just a bit higher after Miseducation dropped?), may have looked a bit clownish and overdressed in Brooklyn’s swarming Wingate Park, but she was tasteful and if one were to go back far enough, Ms. Nina herself often bucked contemporary styling for a look more her own, favoring leather collars, petal dresses and brazen hoods to simpler get-ups. I applaud Ms. Hill for going against the grain and challenging her fans, many of whom wanted to get a glimpse of the “crazy” up-close, mixed with blasts from the past. I watched as the crowds streamed out, by the hundreds, some in disgust, some utterly silent, most simply puzzled by Ms. Lauryn’s appearance and vocal choices. Yes she had rambled, producing lyrics at RPM’s no one cared to clock, but she was salient and looked sincerely happy with the musicianship she was helming. But Brooklyn’s got class – there were no (loud) boo’s, no calls for her head (though to think a person lost their job to watch her perform, and Ms. Hill didn’t give us the finger. When all was said and done, folks still rushed the emptying seats (a scarcity at these things). And for them it was a show unlike any other. For once, a free concert, after all the politicking, sponsor-whoring and glad-handling, could be truly memorable and soon all was forgiven as a few fingers stoked keys to the tune of X-factor. The crowd fell silent, wanting to sing along but knowing the song’s originator was the only person who could do it justice. No overtures, no scats, simply Lauren. And no spitting or swear words or rages against the machines. Instead, she played at a steady clip – for more than 2 hours; sweat-soaked in the day’s feverish humidity, invoking no other than Nina the Great. For all the adjectives you could use to describe the former Fugee and mother of four, on this night even the weather relented, allowing us to see clearly just how much she had changed; a little strange; more a vision of what’s to come than a fragment of her former self. I don’t visit her Myspace page, I’m not sure she even has one, but could you imagine the scandal if perchance, she captioned it” “Young, Gifted and Black?”

Hands | 8/7/2007, 8:16 pm EST

No, D, it’s more like two words:

crack kills.

RockdaBells | 8/7/2007, 8:50 pm EST

Lauryn’s time has come and gone. She’s like a pinch hitter at this point of her career and her fans just need to “Whitneyup”.

She was a flash in the pan and now she’s just a “pop-tart” artist trying to get periodic attention.

I mean man, who’s really looking for her, except all of Brooklyn?

Please, let her RIP………

anna | 8/7/2007, 10:23 pm EST

For those that left THANKS! I got a better seat. I enjoyed the hell out of that show. I felt like I was a witness to history – can’t explain it and won’t try. what’s sad is that this response from RS is what scares artists the most – will my fans grow with me or will they leave me if I change? I for one am along for the whole experience not just a ride so that I can selfishly take a trip down memory lane. for those of y’all that want to hear a cd I suggest you go dust off the one at home and next time leave the good seats to real fans.

dontmesswBK | 8/8/2007, 12:22 am EST

lauryn is still the truth i dunno what yall are talking about

Miss L | 8/8/2007, 12:36 am EST

If you missed or left the show early last nite Kill Yourself.

It was an amazing show. She brought the same passion, talent, and energy on stage as artists like Nina, James Brown, And Marley did. and I believe Miss Hill will be a legend like all of them. The show last night was some historical shit. Those that didn’t get it, appreciate it, or enjoy it then it wasn’t for you.

ronald reagan | 8/8/2007, 12:53 am EST

From what I understand there was an audition for the upcomng movie entitled,”BOZO: MY LIFE STORY” right next door and Lauryn was supposed to go to that but got confused with all that crack she had taken. It happens people.

A | 8/8/2007, 3:31 am EST

Lauryn Hill was nothing short of amazing last night! She proves that being black and female is the absolute greatest. All of you haters who have been whitewashed should seriously consider how truly feel about yourself. It scares you all to see a sister as beautiful and talented as Lauryn saying, “I don’t give a fuck about the boxes you are trying to put me in!”

She put on a show..and guess what? In the midst of all of the theatrics she can STILL out sing and rap the majority of entertainers/performers on the radio…and she can do so wearing her natural hair.

I sat on the 6th row and didn’t leave until she waved goodbye. Her performance was just that remarkable.

Cat | 8/8/2007, 7:18 am EST

Ya! Lauryn Hill rocks.

goddamn idiot | 8/8/2007, 7:50 am EST

Will she ever put out anything at least 3/4 as good as Miseducation??? That album still splits my skull every time I listen to it. Fucking untoppable. (well, by her…)

YC | 8/8/2007, 12:04 pm EST

I wasn’t there to see the concert but I did catch youtube highlights, but maybe one day people will get past someone’s exterior, from what I saw she did a great show! So what her outfit and make up wasn’t what people expected..GET OVER IT!

Bryan D | 8/8/2007, 12:32 pm EST

I watched from the line which got cut off an hour before she took stage. In caged by line barriers, crowd was amazingly patient many tending to their babies and reading Harry Potter. After the first song, an African gentleman next to me said “This girl’s on drugs” hopped the barrier and left. I stayed for the next tune “Lost Ones” and left thinking she is one of them.
Still a fan, Bryan

Loni | 8/8/2007, 1:17 pm EST

I think alot of you who are making the worst comments didn’t stay to the end. I do agree the beginning and middle of the show were horrible, but the ending was phenomenal. You all should have heard “Killing me Softly” The crowd went BANANAS! She didn’t speed it up or anything. Even though it sucks the WHOLE show was not great, for me, it had nothing to do with the beat or what she was wearing. The speeding up of the lyrics was what made me angry. But if it is true she only did that because she is beefing with the record label, then it is not her fault. My friends and I DID get the feeling that she was purposely not doing her own songs, but now I understand why.

If you all have such a problem with Lauryn’s choice of clothing, then become fashion critics, fashion has nothing to do with music.

Wow | 8/8/2007, 1:53 pm EST

Hey A –

What a racist rant. I guess you assume that all whites are out to get you. Newsflash – they’re not. You’re just as racist as the imaginary people you are lashing out at.

Lauryn Hill is a person just like anyone else. You would have to understand all the publicity that a star would have to undergo to actually know her plight. I believe the concert was just a way of Lauryn saying “Hey I am still here, and I still love you all.” True fans would have to just understand that she is still going through, but she is still Lauryn Hill. I do not think she has changed a bit. Her Unplugged album showed that in her lyrics. Lauryn Hill is still and always will be true hip hop. All the haters can fall back and take notes.

Lauren Hill is Worthless | 8/8/2007, 11:28 pm EST

It’s good that concert was free causse a payin crowd mighta bashed her non-cooperative ass- Look, if you want to be a professional musician/singer/rapper then you need to be able to perform. Period. Perform, you go out and give a show your audience wants to see. Play the crowd, indulge your fans, don’t take every opportunity to be so original that no one knows wtf you are doing. If normal people did this at work… You’d have people handin you bologna sandwiches at Burgerking, Construction workers putting windows in floors, and Walmart employees giving price check remixes. She needs to cut this crap out and come back to earth.

Mark | 8/9/2007, 6:48 pm EST

Ever listen to Michael Jackson fans fawn over their train wreck of a hero proclaiming him to be damn near God’s messenger. Eerily similar to how fans kiss the feet of Hill. We’ve seen it before people, the flash in the pan brilliant talent who loses their mind. Call it Nina, call it Whitney, call it Michael. Call it a rock and roll cliche.

Zero | 8/9/2007, 10:25 pm EST

A very great man once said that the only thing worse than rap, was live rap. Yeah, I know Hill is not just a rapper, but she sure as hell is no vocal wonder. Guess the world loves a trainwreck.

Lauryn, you’ve had your 15 minutes of fame, so why don’t you and your buddies just fade away into the world of unimportance?

Komora | 8/10/2007, 12:51 am EST

A friend of mine texts me while in there ??? is she on drugs? I replied, I think so its called speed.
We could not figure out what she was saying at all. I told everyone I was with to pick out one word out of what she was saying and we can put all of the words together and possibly form some kind of a sentence so we could figure out what she’s screaming about.

I admit my boyfriend and I and another couple who drove in from Philly just to see the show left after her horrible rendition of Zion. My friend who text me earlier asking if she was on drugs stayed to the very end and said that it got really good, she did all of her old songs from the fugees and more. She said people were standing on chairs having a great time, the show was bananas.

I thought we were just experiencing what was going on in Laurens head and it seemed to me that she was all over the place.

I’m glad to hear that she pulled through, though my group wasnt patient enough to wait until the 11th hour to hear something somewhat recognizable.

Hope the rumors about the record label are true, would explain a lot.

Still a supporter and lover of Lauren, lets all send some positive vibes her way.

Natam | 8/10/2007, 11:38 am EST

She better give good performances for free, because the ones we pay for are so bad.
Lauryn, You’re great, but GET A GRIP, WOMAN!

^^ Clef and Pras need her. Pras sold maybe 5 solo CDs. Clef didn’t sell any after the first one. Lauryn sold over 8 million Miseducation and won a zillion awards. Even Unplugged went platinum.

It is pretty shocking how some journalists would go out of their way to criticise Lauryn Hill, the most celebrated female artist of her generation, and give such bad reviews about her recent concerts, when it has been rumoured that she will be going to the studio to record her 2nd album. Contrary to the reviews and tentative rumours that people have been walking out of her concerts, I have been on Youtube for the past two month to see videos of her recent concerts, to my astonishment, the crowds were rocking and grooving to her songs. Her voice sounds good contrary to reports that she cannot sing anymore. For crying out loud Lauryn has always had a raspy and distinct voice and that is why we fell in love with her because the raspyness makes her voice mesmerising and soulful. To be honest Lauryn performs better than most current RnB artists and she is the only female RnB artist I know that does not need choreographed dancing or any trashy outfits on stage to put up a great show. Lauryn has got that magnetic presence that most artists’ lack and that is the best quality any artist can possess and it’s a quality that cannot be taken way from her because she was born with it. To me Lauryn created some magic in the music industry that most current artists are failing to capture, I mean Alicia Keys, Norah Jones, and Beyonce won Grammys but their albums cannot be compared to the Miseducation and their talent can neither be compared to that of Lauryn Hill. I don’t think any stupid negative review can take away the talent Lauryn Hill possesses, next time the Rolling Stones must have an intelligent and objective review. I mean the reviews of the Oakland show were so bad, but people went to her concerts subsequent to the Oakland’s one, this simply means critics might not always be right.

As for Lauryn’s clothes, even during the Fugees and the Miseducation era, Lauryn has never portrayed that idiotic Hollywood “it girl” image, she has always had that simple glamour that ordinary people can identify with, she was never a fashion follower but a trend-setter that is why we fell in love with her. Just because she is not portraying that cheap sex gimmick image people want to criticise her style, this is so stupid. Just a reminder Lauryn has never taken off her clothes to sell records. She does not have to do that because she is truly talented and intelligent.

I don’t understand why Lauryn Hill is getting so much hate when we should be celebrating her comeback considering the current state of the music industry. The fact that the stupid “Umbrella” song by Rihanna can top the charts, and Beyonce ‘s videos getting played a 1000 times on MTV like that pathetic ‘Upgrade U” song where she is reminding us how much she worships vanity, material things and her rich ugly boyfriend, this simply means there is a serious problem in the music industry. I mean what happened to the good old days when female artists got accolades and respect due to their musical abilities not because they are pretty or shake their bootys half naked all over the show, I think the music industry needs some serious reconstruction.

They can criticise Lauryn Hill all they want, but to be honest we need more female artists like her because her presence represented many things; she was intelligent, street-smart, talented, inspirational, socially and politically conscious. Not to put the race card, but as an educated black woman I am not pleased with the current RnB female artists, they are such a disgrace with their adoption of the white standards of beauty which is a serious identity crisis problem. Who is actually advising all these black girls that they need to portray images that do not represent black culture and roots. This sends erroneous messages that in order for a black woman to be called beautiful or be successful she has to put on make up that makes her light skinned and have a fake blond weave.

I am really sick and tired of the media supporting unintelligent and phoney female artists like Beyonce, Ciara, Rihanna, Fergie, Britney, Eve, Lil Kim, Kelly Rowland etc, on a serious note what positive contribution are these women making in the showbiz industry, what images are they perpetuating about women in general? They are not role models but just manufactured dolls and puppets of the entertainment corporations by selling their souls to make money. And Lauryn Hill cannot be ostracised for being intelligent and speaking her mind. It is so funny how the media will reinforce negative stereotypes that women are not educated and intelligent, and that they have to use their bodies and beauty to make it the entertainment industry when the industry is characterised by so much racism and sexism, instead of commending women like Lauryn Hill who will stand up for who they are and what they believe in because they want to change the world with their music and make a difference.

“Anything that isn’t changin is DEAD…”

Surely, there are many more heinous “crimes” an artist can commit against their sheep. How about setting them on fire with pyrotechnics? Inciting a riot that renders them maimed? You would think after all of the reports of her “erractic behavior” and “late arrivals” those who tend to complain the most would stay home. Thought it isn’t my intent to make her seem worshipped, some of us, as pathetic as it may sound, are grateful to witness whatever it is she wishes to share.

Ms. Hill is evolving as a person. he beahvior over the years is aomewhat reminiscent (sp?) of a midlife crisis, but only God knows what & why. While I do not have all the facts, assuming it’s drugs or it’s a man that has her acting the way she is puts her back in the same box we place all artists who’ve strayed from their beginnings.

Yes, I love (LOVE) the old Lauryn, but I’ve also listened to what she’s been saying since Unplugged. “I get out of all these boxes…you can’t hold me in these chains..” Perhaps she’s searching, perhaps she’s making it up as she goes along (very liberating, btw)…whatever it is, when she truly comes back, most of her naysayers will be back in the store, (yes, that was a euphemism…thanks for noticing).

I love Lauryn Hill for many reasons, but above all else not being afraid of being herself, whatever that ends up being that day. As a fellow Gemini, I can totally relate.

One.

ROOTS OBSERVER | 8/24/2007, 5:39 pm EST

-Late start, no flow, after 3 songs people started to go.
-We dropped a $100 each, only to get insultingly preached.
-Sound was bad, band was loose, and you bob versions were hardly roots.
-So go on Sis with your self-rightous talk, droppin sorry shows and with the money you walk…..

“Ghost Mutt | 8/7/2007, 12:06 pm EST

She and The Fugees are just overrated mainstream Hip-Hop, just as Marley is overrated mainstream reggae (well after he left Scratch anyway).”

Overated main stream reggae? Who are you exactly? Wow. You have no idea what you are talking about

tebo | 8/29/2007, 6:03 am EST

To you metahustler how is Lauryn Hill, Bob Marley, and the Fugees overrated? Provide us with some facts. This is the most ignorant and stupid comment i have ever seen in my life. Do you have any clue what overrated means? I am seriously getting annoyed. Have you ever listened to any of Bob Marley and the Fugees lyrics? Let me educate you, DO YOU KNOW WHAT DEFINES A GREAT ARTIST? ANSWER: Popular politics that tickle the fancy of majority and timely lyrics that talk of human suffering and war. To be talented you have to be lyrically relevant, important, unique, and genius. In actual fact you have to send moral messages to the world and be politically astute. Artists like that will be remembered for generations and generations to come because of their powerful lyrics. Bob Marley, Lauryn Hill and the Fugees represented that. The fact that Bob Marley died 26 years ago and we are still jamming to his songs that should give you a clue, and that still to date the Fugees Score is the best selling hip hop album in music history (more than 17 million copies sold) that should tell you something about the current horrendous state of hip hop. As for Lauryn Hill she sold more than 18 million copies for the Miseducation and won more than 30 awards just for one album, the unplugged album sold more than 5 million even though it was highly criticized, most of these current overexposed artists cannot even sell the way Lauryn and the Fugees did.

The music industry is now characterized by that fake Hollywood culture and materialism. If you check the current overexposed RnB female artist Beyonce she sings well but people love her for her beauty and body there is nothing profound about her music, she is forever reminding us how sexy she looks and how much money she makes, and she cannot be compared to Lauryn Hill either. I mean she is not intelligent and she sells sex, people respect her work ethic not her talent (that is what I call overrated). As for the leading hip hop stars Jay Z and 50cents, for crying out loud these two do not really sell records to show that they do not have a huge fan base, they make money though other business ventures. I mean Jay z is named the greatest MC of all times but he is not a great lyricist, if you listen to his songs he tells us how munch money he has and how he has the hottest chick in the game, what a shame, as for 50cents I don’t even want to go there. As an educated person if Women Gender Forums will know that I used Beyonce as a reference I will be ostracized for that, if black political activists and the Black Coalition Movement would know that I used Jay Z and 50cents as a reference for hip hop they will come to my house with guns to shoot me. I only used these three to oppose your claims by calling Bob Marley, Lauryn and the Fugees overrated, if you want the definition of overrated look at Beyonce, Jay z and 50cents. I just realize daily that there are so many misinformed people out there that truly need an education.

lebogang | 8/29/2007, 10:52 am EST

Well said, on a serious note, any person with a well functioning brain would never even think that Bob Marley, Lauryn Hill and the Fugees are overrated. Yes Tebo those are 3 great examples you used if anyone wants to label any of the current musicians overrated. I don’t remember Lauryn Hill shaking her booty on stage half naked as if she is possessed by the devil to get recognised in order to top the charts like Beyonce does, and this is the image we want to portray of black women, hell no. As for the Fugees I don’t even remember them in any of their videos showing us bling, or dropping designer labels and names in their lyrics as if their lives depended on them. I don’t even remember Wyclef and Pras calling themselves big pimping to reinforce negative stereotypes to degrade black women by calling them whores and bitches like Jay z and 50cents. It really saddens me to see people like Beyonce and Jay Z getting so many accolades when everything they represent is just bogus, and we want to call people like that true artists, hell no. When other artists choose the political route in order to change the world with their music we call them overrated and racists, this is really appalling.
