Smashing Pumpkins and the Wu-Tang Clan Deliver the Hits at Virgin Festival Day Two

Day two of the second-ever U.S. Virgin Festival opened with a shrieking “Hello, Baltimore!” from Lovefoxx of the Brazilian band CSS, just before she began aerobic exercises in her rainbow-striped sequin unitard. The band tried to keep the energy up with songs like “Alala,” but fell victim to a small and low-energy morning crowd.

Inside the Dance Tent, Girl Talk had no such problems. The mash-up pro greeted a rowdy audience and managed to throw a kick-ass party at 12:30 PM by playing remixes of nearly every popular hip-hop song from the last decade (“Whoop There It Is” even snuck into the playlist), including a blend of Wu-Tang and the Police, an ode to two of the festival’s main attractions. Aside from minor technical problems caused by dancing too hard on stage (skipping files and accidentally unplugging the computer), Girl Talk’s Greg Gillis got the crowd hyped for the full day ahead of them.

Matisyahu drew the first huge crowd of the day with his performance on the South Stage. His dub vibe was perfect for a hot daytime set, and crowd members could not help but dance around and share stories of his past performances as they sweated along. Luckily, a cool breeze blew in just as Spoon took the stage for what was possibly the most impressive and consistent set of the day, stocked with songs from their new album including “Don’t Make Me A Target” and “You Got Yr. Cherry Bomb.” Playing large crowds seems like second nature to Britt Daniel and the gang, and these guys could be a major single (or an iPod commercial) away from closing out festivals instead of being a mid-day gem.

Next up, Panic! At The Disco did what they do — split the audience in half. Fans usually on the younger end of the crowd danced and sang along to every word, while the rest of the audience seemed to be reminding themselves to be patient and wait for the Smashing Pumpkins. But for a moment the Vegas group managed to unite almost everyone with a cover of the Band’s “The Weight.”

Richard Branson himself came out to see the Wu’s late-afternoon set. The Virgin founder (and man responsible for the weekend’s festival) stood on the side platform as the crowd threw up the Ws and chanted “Wu-Tang” at a deafening volume while awaiting Shaolin’s finest. Wu-Tang seemed to be the reason most people came to Pimlico (there were more Wu-Tang shirts at the fest than tees for any other act) and the Clan did not disappoint, as the whole crew showed up to perform all the classics (“C.R.E.A.M,” “Protect Ya Neck,” “Ice Cream”). Once early mic trouble was fixed (after Method Man had the crowd scream “get it right” to the sound engineers), Meth took over most of the talking (he also covered most of Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s verses), and all of the crowd surfing, rapping full verses while standing on fans’ shoulders like he recently did at New York’s Rock the Bells. But Raekwon, Ghostface, GZA, Inspector Deck and the rest of the crew still smoked on the mic.

You know times have changed when an O’Doul’s bottle is prominently displayed on an amp at Slash and Duff’s show. As rain began to fall, Velvet Revolver took the stage, opening with “Let it Roll,” the first song on their new album Libertad. Fans stuck it out through their soggy but solid set (which featured a strong rendition of “Fall to Pieces”), then migrated to the North Stage for Smashing Pumpkins’ headlining slot, which was a great reminder that Billy Corgan and Co. are still built to rock hard and loud in front of tens of thousands at epic outdoor concerts. The set, which included Corgan’s chilling version of “The Star Spangled Banner,” was powerful and striking, and classics like “Bullet with Butterfly Wings,” “Today,” “Tonight, Tonight” and “1979” served as reminders of the Pumpkins enduring dexterity and power on the big stages.

SMASHING PUMPKINS IS ONE HELLUVA AMAZING BAND!

2007 = THE YEAR OF SMASHING PUMPKINS

netphorian | 8/18/2007, 3:10 pm EST

Pumpkins blew everyone away. Hell of a show. And tcm was very good. I hated being around all those druggies though.

vince | 8/14/2007, 8:22 pm EST

Everyone has such a problem with Corgan but I simply don’t understand it. This is about his incredible musical talent, and to me it’s all about the music. I thought the new cd was just as amazing as all the others and i didnt feel that the show was a plug for their new album. How can you play a show with a new album and not play your new songs?
Also the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s were amazing and I promptly purchased some Regina Spektor the next week.

Why is it that billy gets a bad rap for his ego? First so what if has one. Second, if i was as great as him my head would be huge! Third, every band needs a leader, which BC Clearly is. Fourth, i believe he just wants love, (if you read his words he says that constantly) That is what he is about not ego. So shut the hell up and embrace some Global Pumpkin LOve. Last, even if does have a huge ego and I just don’t see it. He is a fucking rock start- its part of the job. So suck it up and spend your time and $money on Mandy Moore she is sweet and kind and truly humble. peace and love, mcr

ah yes, the smashing pumpkins… or half of them since two of my favorites have gone missing. I saw James Iha play with A Perfect Circle several years ago and he is amazing on guitar. the show would have been enhanced by his presence but Billy’s ego clearly filled the stage at Virgin Fest. When he thanked the crowd for its humility a part of me died inside. But seeing that much of the crowd consisted of younger patrons who were perhaps 5 when Melancholy came out, i realized that these kids like the Pumpkins because they’re one of those cool 90s bands resurrected from the dead in some mutilated zombie format. Moreover, i was disappointed by the fact that this concert was more of a plug for Zeitgeist than a celebration of the band’s success over the years. Most of the playlist was from the new album which made most of their set ineffectual to me at least. but maybe i’m too OG for my own good.

On a different note, Infected Mushroom played a fantastic set with more energy than Wu-Tang had during their performance. Overall, the Tent jammed long and hard. I could have stayed in there all day.

Hey Dirty Jerz,

How do you know the whole Police performance was “low energy” if you admittedly skipped most of it to go see another act? Seriously, assuming crap and stop trying to be cooler than the f’n room. The Police were actually phenominal and, btw, they’re not a metal or scream-o band…there are actually nuances and subtle points of great musicianship. It’s not all about three blistering minutes per song with yelling…check out one of their records, perhaps. Please, know what you’re talking about before you type people.

zoe | 8/9/2007, 5:23 pm EST

Technically the Police sounded awesome, like a cd.
But, they sounded old, No Soul/Feeling or Attitude like the beasties or yyy’s.

Dirty Jersey | 8/9/2007, 3:55 pm EST

The Pumpkins Were THE best part of the whole show. Beastie Boys were Awesome too. I didnt like the Police very low energy for a Saturday closing act. I actually went to see Sander Van Doorn instead and he ROCKED that dance tent. The Wu was HOT the crowd LOVED them… RIP ODB!

Spaceboy | 8/8/2007, 8:39 pm EST

Dear Haters,

Suck it.

Signed,
Billy Corgan

Face it people Shaolin is so right: Billy is the opposite of terrible, in fact he is god. Yeah i said it. He is a fucking Rock God. The final song on Sunday at pimlico proved that. Period. MFers

>Oh by the way Karen O. WOW!!! how Great is she???? i think I’m in love

shaolin | 8/8/2007, 2:58 pm EST

billy and courtney have been friends for a long time, and I’m sure he has more then enough money to house himself.

why wouldnt you want to live with a good friend? just cuz most people hate her, doesnt make him terrible. quite the opposite i find.

Molly | 8/8/2007, 1:51 am EST

Its a complete toss up- Pumpkins, Beasties and Interpol were all amazing!! What a terrific festival…

The Asteroid Kid | 8/7/2007, 11:34 pm EST

He looks like a HUMAN PENIS!

RR | 8/7/2007, 6:17 pm EST

Best performances of the festival:

1. Pumpkins
2. Beastie Boys
3. The Police
4. Yeah Yeah Yeahs
5. The Fratellis

Incubus was not that good.

Angie | 8/7/2007, 5:30 pm EST

Oh my Gosh! I had an awesome time! It was so damn hot but it was worth it. The best acts in my opinion was Matisyahu, The Yeah, yeah, yeah’s and the Smashing Pumpkins!!! I’m so glad that I got to see the Smashing Pumpkins in my life, now I can die happy!

Hickory | 8/7/2007, 1:45 pm EST

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs were incredible! She rocked the stage - Spoon was boring! Panic was well Panic, Wu Tang still the same, Regina Spektor was beautiful and the Pumkins made my weekend!

Panic! sucks | 8/7/2007, 12:46 pm EST

Their cover of The Weight was terrible. Robbie Robertson is rolling over in his grave. Robbie Robertson probably had a heart attack when he found out that they did it. The best sets of Day 2 were definitely Regina Spektor, WuTang and smashing pumpkins (if only because of the amount of energy in the crowd). Overall, however, Regina, Modest Mouse and Ben Harper rocked out the hardest. These overproduced “alternative” bands like 311, Incubus and Panic! are angering me alot.

MCR | 8/7/2007, 12:29 pm EST

Yo, The beasties were Amazing. Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs were Great and if you didn’t think that Billy & the pumpkins were Incredible you just don’t rock.

dave | 8/7/2007, 11:17 am EST

this write up was about half right. The fact that it completely ignored Regina Spektor, Yeah yeah yeahs, and Interpol is a crime since they had 3 of the best sets of the weekend. As far as the smashing pumpkins, he was also half right there. Basically if it was new, it sucked and if it was old it rocked

Georgina | 8/7/2007, 11:06 am EST

Smashing Pumpkins were wonderful. I has the time of my life at this festival.

-K^2 (kimie) | 8/7/2007, 9:18 am EST

This article is definately on point. However, even though girl talk was amazing, the following act was even better. I used to listen to Dieselboy back in the day (6 years ago). I happened to catch his set with MC Messinian. ( My jaw just dropped thinking about it). Definately AMAZING.

Alex | 8/7/2007, 2:15 am EST

The Pumpkins rocked out the only problem i had was that 311 was on at the same time so i only saw half of each set, and so did everyone else at the festival, i loved it, i cant wait to see the list for nest years festival

Lucifer Sam | 8/6/2007, 10:16 pm EST

pumpkins are lame. “star spangled banner”? How original, no one has EVER EVER done that before. billy=zzzzzzzzzzz. i dont care how many rec company execs come on this site posing as fans to hype them up.

Andrew | 8/6/2007, 4:51 pm EST

Pumpkins did rock!!! I was completely blown away by their performance.

Did You Know | 8/6/2007, 4:48 pm EST

That Billy Corgan lives in a wing in Courtney Love’s castle? That makes him sort of a slimy douche bag in my book, seeing that her mansion is completely financed by her selling 1/4 of Nirvana’s catalog. If you don’t believe me, do a little surfing around the internet and you’ll find this info to be true. Phantom of the Paradise

I know where I've seen Corgan | 8/6/2007, 4:44 pm EST

before. His likeness was used on the cover of the book about aliens and UFOs called “Commmunion.” Scary Scary.

Tarantula | 8/6/2007, 1:05 pm EST

Pumpkins rocked the festival!

Timothy | 8/6/2007, 11:13 am EST

SAMSHING PUMPKINS RULE!!!!!
