Remembering Elliott Smith On His Thirty-Eighth Birthday

8/6/07, 3:13 pm EST

Photo: Elliot SmithToday would have been Elliott Smith’s thirty-eighth birthday. To honor the singer-songwriter, Kill Rock Stars is giving away downloads of “Angel in the Snow,” the first track from this year’s New Moon, which includes songs Smith recorded from 1994 to 1997.

We suggest checking out some old photos of Smith and remembering his many accomplishments. As of today, the investigation into his 2003 death remains open. Photographer/video director Autumn de Wilde’s Smith book (which includes a forward written by Beck and Death Cab for Cutie’s Chris Walla) is due September 20.

Funny how he never really got the attention he has gotten now (other than in 98) when he was alive

Stuporfly | 8/6/2007, 4:50 pm EST

Such a shame…His music was so intimate and beautiful.

Some Guy | 8/6/2007, 5:40 pm EST

Thanks for plugging one of the most underappreciated artists of our time RS!!!!!!

Hope to see more Elliott Smith news in the future :-)

chip love | 8/6/2007, 5:51 pm EST

ever notice how the cattle people always diefy mediocrity. smith is boring. jack white’s lyrics are almost insufferable. each have one or two redeeming qualities, but the cattle people (rolling stone readers) make gods out of them. i feel bad this guy died, but hell he frickin’ killed himself and he wasn’t all that good to begin with.

meepos | 8/6/2007, 6:43 pm EST

Don’t know why you would choose this space, chip love, to A:) Exhibit your ignorance and B:) Attack a dead artist and the fans who loved his music. Tacky, bro. Tacky.

By-the-way, who do you listen to that’s so great?

The Real | 8/6/2007, 7:30 pm EST

one of the greatest lyricists ever in music, period!

woody | 8/6/2007, 8:17 pm EST

chip love, you don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about!

DLR | 8/6/2007, 8:29 pm EST

Chip Love I would love to know who you consider an artist worth talking about. Elliott Smith is one of the most melodically gifted singer/songwriters of not just the 90’s, but of all time. Lets not forget he could play every instrument on his records and come up with genuis lyrics. I still miss him.

Jugabee | 8/6/2007, 8:34 pm EST

chip love -

Ever notice how the egoists who debase great artists do so to create a facade of their own “rarefied” taste? Learn to enjoy something beautiful, your cynicism is tiring.

Scott | 8/6/2007, 8:41 pm EST

Elliott Smith was not only such a great lyricist, but he crafted such beautiful melodies. Even the greats have trouble covering his songs because they are so complex. Listening to his songs makes me so sad, happy, and amazed all at once. He was a tormented genius with so much talent.

KING WACK | 8/6/2007, 8:44 pm EST

A Note for Nick… “Funny how he never really got the attention he has gotten now (other than in 98) when he was alive “… YEah man, kinda sad, but don’t forget, the great ones are really like that…. No attention till they are gone… Elliot Smith, Nick Drake, Syd Barrett – just to name a few…

T.J. | 8/6/2007, 8:55 pm EST

Elliott Smith is truly one of the greatest artists in our generation, we all can agree on that. Elliott definitely had a hugh impact on my life as well. When I heard he died, it was like a “Where were you when the World Trade Center fell” sort of thing. When I saw him in Philly in 2000, it was so electrofying. You will be missed Elliott and thank you

Ryan | 8/6/2007, 9:09 pm EST

I will always love Elliott Smith’s music since I heard it: great melody, great lyrics, basically what everyone knows him for. I hope he is well wherever he is; thank you for all the music, Elliott.

AZ | 8/6/2007, 9:31 pm EST

Would anyone be hearing about this guy if he wasn’t dead? Anyone remember Nick Drake? His songs are “fine,” but he’s no Matt Berninger or even Jarvis Cocker…and certainly no Craig Finn (um, the subject was LYRICS?!) And, BTW, Jack White is the Lou Reed of the 21st century. If you don’t what that portends, then you visit this site simply for the blogging.

Stefan | 8/6/2007, 9:44 pm EST

I thank God, allah, Whomever is responsible for this man and his music. Elliott’s music took me into wanting make music myself. I learned guitar because of this man, and while I doubt i could touch his level of talent, I am glad for all his music has done for me.

Craig Finn | 8/6/2007, 9:49 pm EST

WILL EVERYONE STOP SUCKING ON MY COCK OVER MY LYRICS?! KEE- RIST!

OldSDK | 8/6/2007, 9:55 pm EST

Yes, death does help to push many artists (and not just singer/songwriters) to new levels of appreciation – but Elliott Smith did have an obvious gift for solid hooks and thoughtful lyrics.

AZ | 8/6/2007, 9:57 pm EST

Sorry Craig, can’t. You’re too damn good and too damn secksy. You’re like a big fat bald bespeckled bastard son of Dylan and whatnot.

The Real | 8/6/2007, 10:01 pm EST

top 5 guitarist of his time as well, people forget that.

AZ | 8/6/2007, 10:04 pm EST

Don’t get me wrong, I bear no ill-will towards him and the contribution he made, but if Robert Smith had died in ‘89 right after Disintegration or if Paul Westerberg had died in ‘87 right after Pleased to Meet Me, imagine the idolatry that would have been bestowed upon them? And yes he is a guitarist the way Lindsay Buckingham is a guitarist, under-appreciated.

wherezthubeef? | 8/7/2007, 12:50 am EST

RS keeps on loving him post mortem, but somehow gave his albums less than 5 stars. Can you dudes go back and fix that?
Like Kurt, Elliott embodied all of rock’s sadness and self-loathing. He was the real deal.

Sanchez | 8/7/2007, 8:08 am EST

Long live the Plainclothesman.

EmoKid9 | 8/7/2007, 10:52 am EST

Elliot Smith was a sad-sack who slept with his Revolver LP under his pillow. I really liked Figure 8.

cota | 8/7/2007, 10:57 am EST

hey chip love,,,,,,um,,,,,you are reading Rolling Stone,,I guess that makes you one of “the cattle people”,,,,,,,,,,,’nough said,,,,yawn,,,,

chip Shot | 8/7/2007, 12:01 pm EST

Hey, Chip, shouldn’t you be in K-Mart now trying on women’s clothes?

lake monster | 8/7/2007, 1:04 pm EST

chip! You wouldn’t know good music if it jumped up and bit you. let me guess, you listen to creed.

William Fearless | 8/7/2007, 5:43 pm EST

Anyone who still think Smith’s girlfriend still killed him is crazy. That theory holds about as much water as the Courtney Love killed Kurt Cobain theory. Face it, Elliott Smith was one of the saddest and most gifted musical talents to ever live. It doesn’t matter if the circumstances of his death define his legacy, the body of work he left behind speaks for itself. I recommend checking out some Elliott Smith performances on youtube, because when you see him in action you realize what an amazing guitar player he was.

How does anyone change chords that quick?

Harold Ballcse | 8/7/2007, 6:54 pm EST

“Hey Elliott, what do you want for your 38th birthday?”

“Um, to not be dead!”

cara | 8/17/2007, 4:50 pm EST

Elliott was and remains to be a talented musician. He was nominated for an Oscar while he was very much alive, so the assertion that he would not have received attention if not for his death is absolutely absurd. Besides being a great guitar player, the man played almost every other instrument on his records (drums, piano, harmonica, etc).

Nick Drake was good, but Smith and Drake weren’t producing music in the same time period and aren’t that similar. By the way, it is still up in the air as to whether Elliott killed himself, it was never ruled either a homicide or suicide (not that I’m suggesting his girlfriend did it).

I find it hard to believe that someone could listen to “Waltz No.2″, “Abused”, “New Disaster”, “Between the Bars”, “Memory Lane”, etc. and not recognize that these are amazing songs and would be whether he was dead or alive. Elliott more than deserves his fantastic reputation as a musician.

yaknow. | 11/13/2007, 3:29 pm EST

Harold Ballcse that is the most unfunny, stupid joke ever.good one you Twat.

Ashley | 2/28/2008, 2:37 pm EST

I’m totally convinced Jen Chiba killed him, I think if Smith were to kill himself he wouldn’t have done it after he got clean, nor would he have stabbed himself in the chest.. through his clothes..?

foreignergrl | 3/6/2008, 11:59 pm EST

I just think it is so unusual for someone to stab himself in the chest… that is the first case I’ve ever heard of.

Armani | 8/30/2008, 11:14 am EST

i am only 133 and i have justt herdd his musicc and it meanss soo much.even though ive never meet him hee iss a greatt musician andd a wonderfull person.

sam | 11/27/2008, 11:38 am EST

I think Elliott Smith killed himself, his sobriiety may not have been a good thing. Drugs may have helped him.

haleyj | 8/20/2009, 3:55 pm EST

i started listening to him right after he died. and no, that doesn’t make me a poser. i just didn’t find out about him until then. many, many great songs for the sensitive soul. i’m in love with a dead guy:( and chip is just trying to piss people off. people do that a lot when they hate themselves.
