Lollapalooza: Backstage With Silverchair and Interpol

8/5/07, 8:40 am EST

On Saturday, Rock Daily went backstage at Lollapalooza to check out the behind-the-scenes action. We caught up with Australian band Silverchair just as they were about to sit down to dinner in the artists’ dining area (our chat was briefly disrupted by Ryan Cabrera, who asked for a photo with Silverchair singer Daniel Johns). Rock Daily next jumped on a golf cart and rode to the opposite end of Grant Park to see Interpol arrive for their headlining set in front of more than 40,000 eager fans. The night’s end found us chatting with the artists’ lounge bartender, who said she proudly served Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy at the fest.

More Lollapalooza coverage is on the way! Check out updated show reports, photo galleries and video throughout the weekend on RollingStone.com.

Nice Carlos D stalkage!

brett | 8/5/2007, 11:11 pm EST

So glad that Silverchair are making some waves in the States again… their last three albums are neglected classics

Jacinda | 8/6/2007, 12:00 am EST

I agree with the comment brett made, go out and pick up Young Modern but also check out their previous releases Neon Ballroom and Diorama in order to truly appreciate this highly underrated band’s amazing progression!

Jakobi | 8/6/2007, 6:14 am EST

Diorama is a classic.

Who’s Ryan Cabrera?

Bigstarlet | 8/6/2007, 10:19 am EST

Ryan Cabrera is a “singer/songwriter” most famous for being Ashlee Simpson’s ex-boyfriend. Why is this joke even thinking he can breathe the same air as Daniel Johns?

Kevin | 8/6/2007, 10:22 am EST

Yeah everyone go do yourself and favor and buy all 5 albums. They’re such an amazing band. You’ll be missing out. Young Modern is just the best album. I listened to frogstomp the other day and I felt I was pretty over it.

Kevin | 8/6/2007, 10:24 am EST

whoops .. What I mean is get all 5 albums! They’re great! People should get over Frogstomp, Young Modern eats it!

Brien Comerford | 8/6/2007, 12:34 pm EST

The Church are the greatest band in Australia. Their CDs “Uninvited Like The Clouds”, ” After Everything Now This” and “Sometime Anywhere” are mindblowing. Their lead singer, Steve Kilbey, is a vegetarian. So is Silverchair’s Daniel Johns. “Diorama” was their masterpiece.

chuck | 8/6/2007, 3:36 pm EST

Silverchair is the greatest and most underrated (in the US) band out there. Young Modern is an instant classic! I wish I coulda gone to Lollapalooza.

psykoKILLA | 8/6/2007, 4:26 pm EST

Man, silverchair kicks a whole lot of ass on thier first 3 cd’s but after Daniel John’s got over his little eating disorder and got all happy about life the music starting paying for it! Since Neon Ballroom they have pretty much sucked balls although i will say that new single they have out now is starting to grow on me. However, i saw thier performance on the Tonight Show and I’ve got to say that was probably the worst performance ever by a band…..ever! Maybe i’ll illegally download the cd and give it a listen…..

sgmkj | 8/6/2007, 7:36 pm EST

Silverchair are an absolutely amazing band. In the future they will be known as the band that changed the way music is thought about and created classic timeless albums, the sort that other bands can only dream about creating.

sinantya | 8/6/2007, 9:58 pm EST

I agree with mostly everything said here. Thanks Rolling Stones for hanging out with them, the Chair’s interviews are always fun to watch. BTW, I don’t think Daniel even knew who Ryan was haha.

ChairFan | 8/6/2007, 10:13 pm EST

For psykoKILLA, Daniel caught the common viral infection of the throat earlier in the week before appearing on tne Tonight Show. It happened after flying Sydney/Los Angeles/Toronto/New York/Los Angeles in over just four days. That is why his vocals were so bad….They subsequently cancelled some shows so he could rest his voice.

Jen | 8/7/2007, 12:56 am EST

It’s nice to know I have fellow Chair fans out there! Every album they put out is incredible and they kicked major ass at Lollapalooza. I hope more people in the U.S. start to appreciate what a terrific band they are.

Rob | 8/7/2007, 9:40 am EST

Isn’t it awesome to be a Silverchair fan? While I get so PISSED OFF that more people don’t listen to them here in the good ol’ USA, at the same time, I feel sorry for the people who are oblivious to Silverchair’s magical music, and think the ridiculous CRAP that plays on the radio here is wonderful. I live in the Chicago area, and I will forever be DISGUSTED that I didn’t get to go to see them! In that interview, I see them right by the fence next to Lakeshore Drive, and I want to scream thinking that I drove right by there last Thursday! Alright, I’ll shut up now! Long Live Silverchair!!!!

The Phantom | 8/7/2007, 3:03 pm EST

“Sorry for being the greatest ever”? Listen kid, you seriously need to CHECK YOURSELF! Where the hell do you get off calling yourselves the greatest ever? There’s three bands: The Beatles,The Rolling Stones, and Led Zeppelin, and you’re not one of them. You can spend 10 years in the studio working on one record and you still couldn’t compare! So have a productive career, make lots of money, but cool your jets, dudes! The GREATEST EVER? Please!

THE ONE YOU CAN SEE | 8/7/2007, 3:44 pm EST

Ben, Chris, & Dan have to be three of the most humble, sarcastic musicians in the industry and probably three of the funniest. Wow you need to relax don’t take that “best ever” comment to far, it put a smile on my face…and if you haven’t seen them live then don’t knock these guys they are only in their twenties and they’ve made five classic albums the past two being just as good as anything on the market today or in the past 40 years and they are able to play it live effortlessly. peace out!

Rob | 8/7/2007, 4:03 pm EST

Jesus, PHANTOM, get a freaking life, bro, can’t you tell they are joking? While I have to AGREE with the boys that they are freaking amazing, I also know that they are just joking. Wow, settle yourself, dude, and go put on your headphones and listen to some Linkin Park or NIN or whatever crap you think is better and more than Silverchair. Seriously, go buy Diorama and listen to it a few times and then decide whether they are one of the best bands ever. That is one of the best albums of all time, period, and like the one dude said, they can play it perfectly live, too. Check out some YouTube of them. Oh, and get a sense of humor, jackass.

Amanda | 8/7/2007, 4:12 pm EST

Dear The Phantom-I so seriously hope you’re joking about not getting their joke. You must be pretty dense to not get that-oh wait! You think there are only three great bands out there ever, so that confirms my suspicions. I feel sorry for closeminded followers like yourself.

The Phantom | 8/7/2007, 5:13 pm EST

x

The Phantom | 8/7/2007, 5:21 pm EST

How the fuck am I supposed to know whether they are joking or not? What am I, fuckin’ Kreskin’? I’m supposed to know what’s going on inside their heads? But don’t bullshit me. They REALLY DO think they’re that good. Because YOU really think they’re that good. I tell you what, I’ll buy their latest CD and see for myself. Believe me, I will give it a fair shake, but they’re really gonna have to fuckin’ blow me away. I’m not holding my breath. Peace

The Phantom | 8/7/2007, 5:46 pm EST

I would appreciate a favor in return: that you all check out “Supper’s Ready” by Genesis on youtube. That’s pretty good, too.

nicole | 8/7/2007, 11:53 pm EST

silverchair is an amazing band. go and check out their albums.:)

It’s interesting how everyone jumps down my throat when I question how good this band is, and then when I say I’ll give the band a shot, nobody says boo. I guess everyone just wants someone to yell at. Oh well.

Rob | 8/8/2007, 12:46 pm EST

Phantom – I guess we all should have said, “Ok, well thanks for giving them a shot then!” Good point. I guess my concern (and you other Silverchair fans, please don’t kill me for saying this) is that I don’t think Young Modern is their best album at all. I wouldn’t want someone to base their opinion on Silverchair solely on the new album. Yes, it’s great, but if you REALLY want to give them a shot, Phantom, get Diorama and/or Neon Ballroom along with Young Modern. Then make up your mind. I don’t know about you other Silverhcair fans, but I think Diorama is one of the greatest albums of all time. Top to bottom, the album is fantastic. So, Phantom, thanks for giving them a shot. There’s my “Boo.”

mindreader | 8/8/2007, 2:21 pm EST

I thought they’re not in the position to seriously say that they’re the greatest, so I know it was a joke. If I heard the Rolling Stones say that, it’s more likely that I would not be able to tell.

Jacinda | 8/9/2007, 12:11 am EST

Hey Phantom, it’s cool that you’re willing to give Young Modern a listen…but couldn’t you tell they were joking and genarally being sarcastic when they said they were cannibals and enjoyed eating drunk people for inspiration? Most of their interviews are like that…trust me, they don’t believe they’re actually better than any of those bands you mentioned.

joineejt | 8/9/2007, 2:49 pm EST

Phantom,
Oddly enough I’ve thought about your post a few times since I read it.
Obviously you’ll get a lot of fans responding somewhate vociferously to claims that they’re band’s music or personality lacks. You can expect that.
I appreciate your willingness to give them a listen. Give their sense of humor a whirl as well.
On top of what others have proposed, also check out “Israel’s Son” and “Tomorrow”. Both songs are very lasting.
While “Young Modern” isn’t their best, the opening tracks rival anything I’ve heard all year.
Also, if you hear people commenting on being sell-outs while comparing their old stuff, to their new, simply ask the critics if the stuff they did when they were 15 compared to the stuff they do at 20 or 25 or 30.
By the way, you’re right on with The Beatles and Zeppelin. I’d take out The Stones and add Floyd though…Just a thought.
Hope you enjoy.

Ale | 8/10/2007, 5:22 pm EST

That’s all the Interpol you got??Awful, you can’t see a thing in there!!

Lostboy | 9/17/2007, 7:01 am EST

Ok…settle down everyone. Phantom just didn’t get the sarcasm, ease off. But in all seriousness, the reason Silverchair fans love these guys are because they are so humble, funny, and great to their fans. Diorama and Young Modern are two instant classics and miles away from what the mainstream is doing…this is yet another reason we love them. Let the nay-sayers wallow and bicker…I just let Silverchair’s music tune them out.
