Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo is reportedly searching for a publisher to put out his memoirs with the help of literary agent David Vigliano (the man who sold Kurt Cobain’s journals on behalf of one Ms. Courtney Love). The last time we were treated to a bit of Cuomo literary greatness was the singer-guitarist’s readmission essay to Harvard and some essays he wrote during his tenure there, which have popped up on the Internet over the past few years. That’s why we all know he has “studied the lives of Napoleon and David Geffen” to gain insight into “ruthless practicality.” Fans would point out that Cuomo has also been confessing details of his life for years in his song lyrics, in which he frequently draws on personal joys and anguish (word has it his favorite rock group is KISS, and he had a thing for a lesbian cellist at Harvard).
And of course, in 2003 an extremely meticulous recounting of every significant moment in Cuomo’s life — including 1970’s “Born,” a visit to “Grandma Cuomo” in 1994 and a 1987 stint hosting a Canadian exchange student — appeared on the rocker’s personal Web page and was later removed from both his site and a fan’s page. At the time, reports surfaced that Cuomo wrote the detailed thirty-two page timeline based on his personal archives, which included report cards, paying close attention to every Weezer tour date, video shoot and recording session (and World Cup soccer, evidently a big-time fascination of his). If he approaches his proposed autobiography with the same gusto — and dishes all the dirt from his life, from being raised on an ashram to his vow of celibacy to his recent marriage — this book may prove to be a great read.
