Nas is the probably the last rapper alive with talent.

FIRST AND FOREMOST NAS SAYING HIP HOP IS DEAD WAS A STATEMENT TO WAKE UP THE HIP HOP COMMUNITY(LETS ALL PAY ATT:).NOT A STATEMENT DIRECTED AT ALL HIP HOP MUSIC NOT EVEN MOST FOR THAT MATTER.SECONDLY ANYONE WHO TRULY BELEIVES HIP HOP MUSIC IS ALL FOOLISHNESS OR EVEN MOSTLY FOOLISHNESS IS IGNORANT TO THE FACTS. NOT EVEN THE MOST SERIUOS OF HIP HOP CAN’T CLAIM TO HAVE HEARD ALL THAT HIP HOP MUSIC HAS TO OFFER. THIS IS A WORLD WIDE GENRE OF MUSIC PEOPLE, THAT CROSSES OVER INTO MULTIPLE GENRES OF MUSIC.BESIDES ALMOST ALL MUSIC GENRES HAS AND HAS HAD ITS’ FARE SHARE OF FOOLISHNESS.I’M PRETTY SURE I’M NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO THINKS THIS BUT SEX, DRUGS AND ROCK N’ROLL IS NOT A HOLY STATEMENT.BY THE WAY IT DIDN’T COME FROM HIP HOP.

Agree w/ Seun. These ignorant fools make it sound like his entire career was nothing but “gangsta-rap”. Obvisously he wouldn’t perform a “violent” song at the concert.Old ignorant white people.

Remember, this is the same Nas who complained Hip Hop Is Dead, so hold on a minute!

Well allow me to vouch for Nas. The songs that were played on the O’Reilly show were songs like “shoot em up” made nearly 10 years ago in perhaps the worst time period of Nas’ career in terms of quality music. All you have to do is browse any Nas album and you would see that a majority of his songs are NOT violent with many being overwhelmingly uplifting such as “I can” “2nd Childhood” “Memory Lane” “The World is yours” “Doo rags” “Can’t Forget about you” etc… These are the type of songs more appropriate for the concert.
And having 5 violent songs can hardly be criteria for a violent rapper when he has a Catalogue of over 100 songs.

Bill O’Reilly is now involved! Please inform Nas or his publicist about the commentator’s involvement! O’Reilly is threatening Nas and the Virginia Tech president over the “free” concert. He is distorting the concert and cherry-picked lyrics from previous albums! I am not saying it’s a bad move on the part of the university, but if a rapper is to perform to inspire those affected by the tragedy, then let them perform. There were positive responses to the rapper performing. Please don’t let people like Bill O’Reilly destroy something people were looking forward to! Bill O’Reilly has an history of hate-mongering, creating riots, distorting facts, and public denouncements! VA Tech should not bow down to a man who profits of hate speeech!

"Good "Hip Hop | 8/4/2007, 9:24 pm EST

isn’t needed to sustain the genre, because the GARBAGE DOES SELL. And if you listen to NAS, DMX or 50 cent, then YOU buy it as well.

Yeah Yeah Yeah | 8/4/2007, 6:30 pm EST

I read the whole G*d damned thing and you’re completely full of shit! You’re tryiing to intellectualize mindless hip hop “music”; give it up. I listen to rock n’ roll (and not this modern shit), not to these bunch of corporate sell outs who would be just as content selling sneakers, alcohol, and cars as they would be making their so-called “music.” You have no idea what my musical tastes are and how deep they run. But I already know what yours are, you like superficial hip-hop crap!

ryan | 8/4/2007, 12:03 pm EST

uh. thank you sir, you’re a perfect example of the kind of person i’m talking about.. maybe if you’d have read my ENTIRE post other than the 1st two lines you’d see what i was saying.. you just repeated 1/2 of my opinion, only in a more.. 13 year-old boyish form..

there is good rap/hip-hop out there, you just have to dig beneath the crust of saturated bullshit before you get close to it. (guys like Talib Kweli, Deltron3030, The Roots) a genre of music wouldn’t be around if NOTHING in it was good, something has to hold SOME shed of credibility. just search for it.

or, you could just settle, and continue to be spoon-fed, like this poor guy below me.

Shut,Up Ryan | 8/4/2007, 12:19 am EST

I’m so sick and tired of hearing how these these talentless asshole rappers are these misunderstood “poets.” They’re cookie cutter shit, all “style” and no substance. Every single fuckin’ one of them. Period.

nevermind me | 8/3/2007, 12:31 pm EST

Great idea for NOW, but everyone interested already owns those songs.
Also, I don’t want to see a sudden mainstream indie craze. The obscurity of some of these songs is also the attraction.

Richard Legner | 8/3/2007, 12:27 pm EST

while I chringe at the thought of these indie bands being in a NOW comp, maybe this will get the morons who actually buy those things to like good music for once. There could be worse things…I just hope they market it right. IF (and that’s a big if) done correctly, whole new fan bases for deserving bands could be created.

ryan | 8/3/2007, 12:24 pm EST

im certain that at least 90% of these ‘parents’ have never listened to Nas or anything he has to say lyrically. their ideas sound motivated only by racial rap-stereotypes and the idea that since a man is a ‘rapper’ he promotes violence etc… it really is a shame how all the terrible pop-rap gimmick rappers out there ruin it for the talented ones.

bp | 8/3/2007, 12:22 pm EST

Actually, PB&J are going to be the “back up band” for Kanye when they co-play a Swedish music fest.

nathan | 8/3/2007, 12:05 pm EST

It’s a good thing Shooter Jennings isn’t on the VT bill.

Lepsdaman | 8/3/2007, 11:55 am EST

Would have to agree with marnr67 on this one. This is exactly the kind of crap us real (not mainstream garbage) music fans stay away from. Especially since most of the music on there isn’t new. Most of these songs are off of albums that have been out for a while and we most likely own already (probably on vinyl). It is however a step up from the typical “NOW” compilations.

Charlie Brown | 8/3/2007, 11:54 am EST

How about just respecting the fact that nas wants to pay respect to the victims at VT? I highly doubt he will be singing about murdering someone and shooting up places.

marnr67 | 8/3/2007, 11:28 am EST

there’s an idea for a flop: trying to sell a taste-maker comp to album loving indie fans? forget it

Swingline | 8/3/2007, 10:52 am EST

No disrespect to the families who’ve lost loved ones at VT, but do they expect Nas to bring a gun show with him or something?
If the man is donating his time to the event, it means he’d like to offer his support and help pay tribute.
I never knew so many older folks listened to Nas and attempted to dissect his lyrics so heavily. Attempted is the key word.
