Last summer Beyoncé’s fans petitioned the star’s label to shoot a less-risqué version of the video for “Déjà Vu.” And now comes news that attendees of Christina Aguilera’s recent show in Sydney were horrified by the raunch factor in the singer’s act when she donned dominatrix garb, invited a male fan onstage, tied him to a circus wheel and playfully whipped him and joined her dancers in a simulated lap dance. A tad wild? Sure. But far from her chaps-wearing, ass-cheek-shaking “Dirrty” phase. Even the mostly PG, day-glo pop vibe projected by Gwen Stefani has drawn negative attention for being too provocative, though to be fair, the complaints came from religious groups with different standards of propriety than American pop stars. Stefani has agreed to stay covered from her shoulders to her knees and refrain from jumping, shouting or throwing objects when she performs later this month in Kuala Lumpur, after Muslim students protested what they consider an obscene performance style. “She will abide by the Malaysian authorities’ guidelines to ensure that her show will not be offensive to local sensitivities,” reads a statement from her reps.
Meanwhile, we don’t hear any uproar about former Mickey Mouse Club poster-boy Justin Timberlake collaborating with 50 Cent in a soft-core porn music video. The clip for “Ayo Technology” features Mr. Dick in a Box spying on scantily clad vixens with night goggles and panting, “I’m tired of using technology / Why don’t you sit down on top of me?” We’re waiting for the outrage …
