The Police’s First New York Show in Twenty-Four Years: A Trio Playing In Sync

It was obvious from the opening crash and sprint of “Message in a Bottle” — the first number of The Police’s August 1st show at Madison Square Garden — that two ingredients missing from Sting’s solo life for the past two decades have been a drummer that plays too fast and a guitarist with elastic ideas about harmonics and an aversion to conventional chords.

There would be no Police reunion this year if Sting had not willed it. The band made him a superstar, and he has never been embarrassed to wield that clout, even as his own records have explored worlds far away, and even a few centuries back, from the lean power-trio dynamics of the Police’s Econoline-van years. But at the Garden, the group’s first New York City show since 1983, Sting was not the main attraction. He was, with drummer Stewart Copeland and guitarist Andy Summers, one-third of an extraordinary rhythm-and-hit-chorus machine. Copeland and Summers needed Sting to say yes to this tour. But Sting needed them to make his greatest hits — “Roxanne,” “Can’t Stand Losing You,” “Synchronicity II,” even that maypole-dance hook in “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic” — boom and glow like rock again.
Frankly, it was hard to tell how much of the new minutiae I saw Sting drilling into the old arrangements, during the Police’s Vancouver rehearsals three months ago, had survived the first two months of concerts. Two songs from early set lists, “Spirits in the Material World” and “Murder by Numbers,” didn’t even make it to New York. But there was no missing the transformative drama of Copeland’s tom-tom bombs in “Driven to Tears” and Summers’ shivering-Hendrix screams in the Jamaican galactica of “Walking on the Moon.” There isn’t much of a song in “The Bed’s Too Big Without You,” just white-reggae anguish and the unison gunfire of the vocal, guitar and drums in the chorus, just before the last two words. But that rat-a-tat erupted in the Garden’s echo like the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre.

Sting’s high, keening voice was an enduring miracle in itself. He has not had much occasion on recent solo records to push it that hard, and that far up, but he did not coast through first-Police-album grenades such as “So Lonely” or “Truth Hits Everybody” in noticeably lower keys or tempered speeds. And in the constant sing-along by the crowd, you could hear Sting’s triumph as the Police’s dominant songwriter: how he used jazzy flourishes and rhythmic turnarounds that broke most Top Forty-radio laws to make punk-driven, pop-wise platinum. The Police were the biggest band of the New Wave era; Sting delivered the songs to get them there.

He still sings many of them in his own shows, often in different, more careful form. But at the Garden, he played the songs with Copeland and Summers the way the three invented them together — with arresting force.

I heard these guys were named after a crappy 80’s band called Sting.

Wow, Big Nate… hilarious. Please, honor us with more gems.

wow you guys are really clever. if you had half the talent of these guys had you could probably spell “heard.”

steve pape | 8/2/2007, 5:00 pm EST

I heard that it was Sting, and not Rod Stewart, who was rushed to the emergency room one night with stomach pains. When all was said and done, the doctor and pumped out well over a gallon of semen from Sting’s stomach. True story.

Kidding. I like the police. Just want to piss off the snobs here.

BMS | 8/2/2007, 5:01 pm EST

I usually love David Fricke’s writing…but this review kinda stunk to be frank. Half of it was a unneeded history lesson…we’ve all been beaten to death with Police history in recent months. Just get to talking/writing about what actually happened last night without spending half the story talking about 25 years ago.

Sorry Dave, but this was half-assed and pretentious…you’re still the man though.

B. Breeg is a tard | 8/2/2007, 5:02 pm EST

Richard Legner | 8/2/2007, 5:46 pm EST

that’s all I hear about from this magazine lately…Police reunion this…GNRs that,

What, Panic at the Disco! or Fall Out Boy don’t have a new album out yet?

Jim | 8/2/2007, 5:56 pm EST

Most over rated band ever. most of their hit songs consist of the last minute be nothing but a lame chorus. “Every little thing she does” “every little thing she” yawn

auramac | 8/2/2007, 6:05 pm EST

Okay, kids- that’s enough. Time for beddie-bye- and no milk or cookies tonight!

their show was brilliant and it was great to see them together again…hope they make some new music and od it again soon. the world needs these guys and more like them.

I have lived with those 5 albums for over 2 decades. I LOVE the Police. On records. And I was there last night at MSG for what might be the most BORING arena show I’ve ever been to. Nothing happened. And sonically, they desperately needed a synthesizer or keyboard to capture the subtle textures that made the songs so special in the first place. There was no tension in “Don’t Stand So…”; there was no urgency in “Synchronicity 2″; there was no paranoia in “Every Breath You Take”. Most of the songs were tuned down to account for Sting’s diminshiing range (”Next To You” flat out sucked but Roxanne did sound really good). But this was not an inspiring or passionate performance. I still love the records and It’s great that y’all enjoyed the show, but I was WAY disappointed.

Lee Majors | 8/2/2007, 8:43 pm EST

shit, I’ve just been arrested….

Frannymac | 8/2/2007, 8:52 pm EST

What the hell is all this Sting bashing all about. If any of you would ever listen to The Police Anthology “Message In A Box” You’d realize the genius of this band and of Stings lyrics. Get over yourselves and bury those semen comments along with your retoric. You know Nothin Bout Sting!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Big Nate | 8/2/2007, 9:15 pm EST

I heard you were named after a crappy, untalented writer named “Nate”…The Phantom

bein real | 8/2/2007, 10:42 pm EST

get off sting’s dick.. he wants it back

rockshowfan | 8/2/2007, 11:05 pm EST

I was there at MSG. Very disappointing show. I can’t believe the Police have resorted to using backing tracks on background vocals, guitar and even some percussions riffs. Embarrassing. Pretty funny to hear background vocals and no one’s lips are moving except Sting’s.

They are a far cry from the days when the really were The Police. Sad.

Bigdave | 8/3/2007, 1:38 am EST

This was a great review of Sting playing live with a couple of guys!

Beltway Greg | 8/3/2007, 3:07 am EST

I happended to catch them in their prime? summer 1982 at the Mid-South Coliseum in Memphis. On that particular evening they had the misfortune of having Joan Jett as the opening act. Joan came out and literally tore the roof off of the dump. (Tiles fell on the crowd.) When Sting & Co. emerged the crowd took a few minutes of “Da Do Do Do, Da Da Da Daing” and began to chant for Joan’s return. Sting appeared none to happy that evening. I can’t iamgine that the show has gotten any better after all this time. The Police did some interesting things on record but it just didn’t seem to translate in concert. That said they were an amazing hook laden power trio. Watching their videos this week I’ve been reminded of just how low budget they were in that dept. Most of them look as if they were shot on a Super 8 camera with a total outlay of say $40.00. Nevertheless, they worked. In conclusion, methinks the blond reggae thing was a carefully contrived commercial artifice to garner attention and boost record sales. In the end that’s what Sting has been running from for all these years.

I’ve seen Sting live twice in recent years…. ‘xcept Message in a Bottle, all else was yawn yawn. I can’t imagine that Copeland or Summers could contribute to the lack of energy on stage. GravityCo at Myspace on the other hand…

Sammy | 8/3/2007, 7:24 am EST

Who polices the Police? Somebody shoot these money hungry fools!

RayRay | 8/3/2007, 8:30 am EST

I’m not surprised it wasn’t a great show, just like most of the reviews on other shows. The Police are overrated, its that simple. The almost Zeppelin-like fanfare thier reunion first got made me sick.

Biggest & Huge # 1 Police Fan | 8/3/2007, 9:12 am EST

Concert sucked.

Hairy Balls | 8/3/2007, 9:19 am EST

I went to that MSG concert but was stoned and wasted throughout their whole set. Can someone tell me what songs did they play? The last thing I remember was vomiting on the fat chick sitting in front of me. Thanks!

Burnt Crispies | 8/3/2007, 9:45 am EST

Man what a show that was. Those guys are so exciting on stage. I couldn’t believe it when Sting starting smashing his bass guitar on stage then threw the guitar pieces into the audience. Or when Sting took his microphone and put it up to his ass and let out a huge fart in front of the whole arena and went on to play “Message in a Bottle”. Or during the song “Walking on the Moon” he decided to take a piss in the corner of the stage. And damn, when did Sting get so political – talking about his support for Bush and the Iraqi war and how he wishes he was fighting over there. Man, we all got to worship this guy. He’s the greatest.

Lisa | 8/3/2007, 9:48 am EST

I agree with Frannymac, what is all this bashing about??? I was at the concert Wednesday night and they put on an excellent show. GREAT show, they all looked like they were enjoying themselves as much as the fans were enjoying it. To Biggest & Huge #1 Police fan…..you are obviously not a huge fan if you thought the concert sucked…….I would definelty go see The Police again.

The Gimp | 8/3/2007, 9:58 am EST

Actually, I think the photo says it all…..

Country Crotch | 8/3/2007, 10:09 am EST

I saw the Police quite a few times now. Like the time I was speeding on the freeway, or when I was driving drunk and couldn’t keep my car from swerving, or when I went to the train station and saw them standing at the entrance way. I don’t know why they have a lot of fans.

farouk | 8/3/2007, 10:45 am EST

it’s a revco world!

Years Don't Matter Music Lives | 8/3/2007, 10:49 am EST

Fantastic review. I saw them at the opening show end of May. Before that the last time was the last ever UK show in 83.
They are better now period even.. am a purist and I know what quality is and they have that.
Shea Stadium again I say and I will fly over for it.

NYFD | 8/3/2007, 11:50 am EST

The Police?!
Really?!
Why?
Oh yeah…
…money.

“YAWN”

Saw them this week | 8/3/2007, 11:53 am EST

Great to see these guys back. Just hope we can get an album out of them. And I really liked their version of Truth Hits Everybody.

Steve'o | 8/3/2007, 12:57 pm EST

It’s one of the more stable reunion tours to come around, but I can’t help but think that doing a reunion tour without new material is a bit of a cop-out (no pun intended). It gives off an ever so slight odor of some nostalgic Vegas act. But all in all I’m glad their back and ‘yes’ they have pulled it off like only The Police could.

Disgusting Fat Bald Guy | 8/3/2007, 2:16 pm EST

Great concert! Simply awesome! Amazing show! One of the tops I’ve seen. Wait a minute….what band are we talking about here??

liz | 8/3/2007, 3:30 pm EST

Saw the “Police” in Tampa, this past July. So wonderful they picked Tampa for all of us “Police” fans!
Sting, Copeland and Summers delivered!
I was so happy to be a part of this “Legendary Band Tour of the Year!” Wow!!!
I felt like I was in Vegas or something everything was of the utmost “perfection!”
All chosen songs, including Roxanne, with the lighting, all in red was outstanding! So much to say! “Sting” thank you for bringing back your trio for this great event of the year!
Thank you, one great concert I’ll never forget!!!

Paul | 8/3/2007, 6:02 pm EST

Saw them in Detroit a few weeks ago….killer show!!!. They had such joy on their faces and the support they recieved you could tell really touched them. They even came back 3 times for 5 encores!!!. Only drawback was the shameless promoting of stings 30 something no talent kid fronting fiction plane as the opening band…they were horrible and would be playing proms if he were not stings son.

JS NYC | 8/4/2007, 1:22 am EST

Just saw the MSG show and was curious to hear other people’s take on it.

I thought the show was amazing. Sting hit enough notes to make it worth the ticket price. Prerecorded backup vocals? Who cares. We were watching the friggen Police!

bev k | 8/4/2007, 3:40 pm EST

The police concert at MSG on wed was amazing. I was lucky enough to see them with the Synchronicity tour and was totally blown away. I have been a huge fan since then. Wed nite was all about a great show ..Glad I was there and hope to get to another concert on this tour.

Josh Cutts | 8/4/2007, 7:48 pm EST

I love The Police- but I have to say I was disappointed by the show in Hartford. I sang along to every word, and enjoyed myself, but felt all along that I was having more fun than the three guys up on stage. I don’t mind paying for their retirement plans all that much, but I had really hoped to see those guys relishing what should have been a well-deserved curtain call.

dani boyz | 8/5/2007, 12:42 am EST

The MSG show was fantastic as a reunion concert. I was in section 2 so I really was up close and saw it all. Not much for small talk, the set was pretty tight with some extended guitar solos and really wilded up the crowd during the double Regatta de Blanc interlude. The only song the crowd didn’t get into as much as it should was Every Breath You Take. The only song I missed was Spirits in the Material World. The only song I didn’t quite recall by name when it was played was The Truth Hits Everyone. The only medley was Voices inside My Head/WHen the World is running Down… (except for the Regatta de Blanc insertion). I liked the extended rendition of Driven to Tears.

MEBNYC | 8/5/2007, 10:43 am EST

wow. The morons have flooded the review post. The band is tight, the music pops, the crowd (at least at MSG) was electric. Copeland is still one of the best drummers to ever pick up sticks – PERIOD. Bash all you want – you never were a fan. My only complaints were a few missing tunes (Bring On the Night, Murder By Numbers, Peanuts, Born in The 50s, Canary in a Coalmine, Bombs Away, etc…) and the fact that the show…ended.

the lawyer | 8/5/2007, 1:40 pm EST

I heard Sting bathes in warm soy milk.

HRDCLCK | 8/5/2007, 10:03 pm EST

OK, something great has happened between these guys over the past month. Saw them in Miami in July, something was missing on the stage. Saw them at MSG on Friday and OH MY GOD, they found it again. AMAZING, I was so happy to see the BAND playing TOGETHER compared to the Miami show in July, they looked bored and there was no bond- Not at the Garden…..

Rocking Meadowlands | 8/5/2007, 11:48 pm EST

Tonight was the last concert in the USA, the NY Meadowlands show. They ran long with 18 songs and you even got to see sing smiling twice during the show. Once when the crowd nearly drowned him out singing “Invisible Sun,” and another time when he heard 55,000 singing along with him. There was even a song they had to announce since no one had heard it before – 1784. Not sure if it was a new Police song or not, but it sure was fast and it sounded like a potential classic. Someone said it was from the first Police album before Andy Summers joined the band – I have no idea if that is true or not, or if it is just a new song. In any case, NY got 18 songs and nearly and hour and 50 minutes as they played four songs in the encore. A great show enjoyed by just about everyone, and they were totally in synch for this outing.

Darrell | 8/6/2007, 10:38 am EST

Saw The Police Friday and was stunned. These guys exceeded all expectaions.

I saw them twice “back in the day” but with all the negative comments, I’m glad I didn’t shell out big bucks for the reunion. I do hope they come up with some new material after the tour.
