Stevie Wonder Announces Thirteen-Date Tour With Surprise Los Angeles Concert

8/2/07, 6:02 pm EST

Stevie Wonder will hit the road for a thirteen-show tour — dubbed “A Wonder Summer’s Night” — August 23 in San Diego. (Other dates include September 5 at L.A.’s Greek Theatre and September 12 at Meadow Brook, in Wonder’s hometown of Detroit. The jaunt wraps September 20 at Boston’s Bank of America Pavilion.) Wonder announced the trek — his first in over a decade — today in Los Angeles with a forty-five-minute surprise concert at the Century City headquarters of CAA; selections included “Ma Cherie Amour” and “Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours” for which Wonder solicited the backing-vocal help of the suit-wearing professionals on their lunch breaks. “We have a need for healing in this country,” Wonder said. “What better way do we have to thank God than to share in song?”

(Keep reading for a full list of Wonder’s upcoming tour dates and news on his next album):
Wonder says he’s sticking to relatively intimate venues on this tour because the smaller spaces allow him the opportunity to hear his fans sing along with him. He added that he was was moved to break his decade-long respite from touring thanks to a show he played last year in Hawaii following the death of his mother, Lula Mae Hardaway. “My mother would want me to celebrate,” Wonder said, “because the best thing for the spirit is to thank God for the gift of song.” Wonder expects to play hits from throughout his four-decade-plus career, as well as material from an upcoming gospel album he’s dedicating to his mom. He said he hopes to complete the CD — the follow-up to 2005’s A Time to Love in time to release it before Hardaway’s birthday in January.

I love the intimate nature of these venues. But the B-more show sold out in like 23 minutes. Bigger arenas or more shows, please. I’ve been waiting 20 years to see this genius. PLEEEZE! More shows!

San Diego Show was so WONDERFUL… Small venue, outdoors by the water (okay, we were in the water – saw the show via boat along with everyone else who couldn’t get a ticket). BEST SHOW EVER!

Hey CB or anyone who was there. Can you share a set list from the show at Humphrey’s?????????

Thanks and Peace

Steviefreak | 8/24/2007, 5:08 pm EST

Set list was only 2 new songs plus ALL the classics we love so much – he played for two hours and fifteen minutes straight. Just amazing. He was gracious, emotional, funny, fun and spent a lot of time engaging the audience – and the music was out of this world. Best concert ever. Venue had only 1400 people, no bad seats. Huge band and Aisha on backups!

johnroxx | 8/25/2007, 3:21 am EST

Show in San Diego last night was phenomenal. I’ve been going to rock/pop concerts for 33 years, and thanks to the 20 I spent as a music journalist in the San Diego area, I’ve seen over 2,000 shows. This one was definitely in the top 10 of all time for me.

11-piece band: three backing vocalists, drummer, two percussionists, two keyboard players, bassist, and two guitaists. No live horns, but well-reproduced horn parts from one of the keyboard players.

Here’s what I remember from the set list:

Love’s In Need Of Love Today (just Stevie playing the piano and singing, with his daughter seated by his side)
My Cherie Amour
Signed, Sealed, Delivered
You Are The Sunshine Of My Life
Superstition
Too High
Livin’ For The City
Golden Lady
Higher Ground
Don’t You Worry ‘Bout A Thing
Sir Duke
I Wish
Isn’t She Lovely
Master Blaster (Jammin’)
Ribbon In The Sky
I Just Called To Say I Love You
Overjoyed
Part-Time Lover

sashaalexandra | 8/27/2007, 5:28 pm EST

Anyone know what song he sang right after “Ribbon in the sky”? The two songs just kind of meshed together (it might have been a longer version of “Ribbon in the sky”…)?

Jasmine | 8/28/2007, 4:58 pm EST

Saw him the other night at Concord. One of the best performances I have seen. Ever.

erik kuska | 9/6/2007, 7:13 pm EST

went to the LA show last night, without tickets. The seven or eight seats that were being scalped were going for $250 to $300 for the back benches.. (Online the prices were twice as high).
Good news is I met many other big fans that were in the same boat I was in.. We were all so excited that he is touring again, but those few seats were gobbled up very quickly.. So we just hung out, and hoped for extra seats, and went home.
I hope he comes back..
Keep Groovin Stevie!!

diane | 9/8/2007, 7:46 pm EST

Stevie Wonder is by far the best ever! Nobody on earth is more pleasurable than Stevie. A concert well done on September 11. Thanks Stevie you’re the greatest! Keep it up!

DH | 9/15/2007, 12:27 am EST

Just got back from ATL show (on my birthday!). Best show I’ve seen since Prince came to town. Or, since I saw Stevie in Vegas at a private show 2 years ago. WHAT A CONCERT!!! Thank you, Stevie!

Stevie's Atlanta show set list | 9/15/2007, 11:33 pm EST

What a SHOW! Stevie is the one living idol I most wanted to see, other than Sly Stone, and it was actually worth every penny of $140. Here’s the set list from the Atlanta show. I’m very exact with my set lists so you can trust it’s accurate. An amazing 26 songs!

1. Love’s in Need of Love Today
2. Too High
3. Visions
4. Living for the City
5. Master Blaster (Jammin’)
6. Higher Ground
7. Golden Lady
8. Ribbon in the Sky
9. Overjoyed
10. You and I
11. Lately
12. How Will I Know
13. Don’t You Worry About a Thing
14. Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I’m Yours – then a short country version of same song
15. My Cherie Amour
16. All I Do
17. Sir Duke
18. I Wish
19. Boogie On Reggae Woman
20. Do I Do
21. Isn’t She Lovely
22. You Are the Sunshine of My Life
23. Superstition
24. Part-Time Lover
25. I Just Called to Say I Love You
26. As

My favorites of the night were the amazing seque of “Golden Lady” to a very long (12-15 minutes) “Ribbon In The Sky” done as a duet with India.Arie, “Isn’t She Lovely” with the subject of the song (daughter Aisha Morris) standing there right next to him smiling, and an amazing and very long version of “Visions” with a spoken-word portion over the music talking about Dr Martin Luther King. A fitting tribute since he was in King’s home city.

Thank you Stevie!!

Stevie's Atlanta show set list | 9/15/2007, 11:34 pm EST

Note – that Atlanta set list below is from his show at Chastain Park, last night – Friday, September 14, 2007.

9/16 Baltimore show | 9/19/2007, 11:13 pm EST

The show in Baltimore was fabulous! Almost 3 hours of Stevie, ooh yeah! I think he used the same setlist as the one posted for the Atlanta show. He announced that he plans to return to Baltimore next year and do 2 shows, and 1 will be free. I’ll be there!

Heels8293 | 9/21/2007, 7:10 pm EST

Was at the ATL show scored $60 tics! you read that right! My favorite concert has always been the Talking Heads in 85. That record has stood for 21 years. Stevie smashed that within two songs. The highlight for me was “You and I” and the “As” closer. The rainbow over the stage before the show wasn’t shabby either. I will never see another concert as good as that in my life. Thank You Stevie.

Jim D | 9/28/2007, 1:44 pm EST

I was at the baltimore show and i am still flying. i drove down from N.Y and it was well worth it. The venue, the crowd and the music all made for an evening to remember.
So much so I drove up to Boston 4 days later to see him again, I guess I am addicted. I think he might be back next year but with stevie that could mean 10 years.
