John Mayer, the Dave Matthews Band, and Virginia-born country star Phil Vassar will perform at Virginia Tech’s Blacksburg campus on September 6 at A Concert for Virginia Tech, a demonstration of solidarity with the school as it begins a new academic year and tries to move past last April’s horrific shootings. “We have a profound respect for the incredible resolve and unwavering sense of hope the university community has shown, and are honored to have the opportunity to share this evening with Virginia Tech,” said DMB drummer Carter Beauford.

One free ticket will be available to current students, faculty and staff, as well as spring and summer 2007 graduates, with corporate sponsorships, the sale of commemorative items and the possible sale of an additional ticket to each buyer helping to cover the cost of the event (the artists won’t be collecting any fees for their performances). No tickets are available to the public at this time.

“We’re extremely grateful for the compassion and generosity of these artists who wished to create a very special event where our students, faculty and staff can come together to celebrate the spirit and resiliency of our university community as we begin a new academic year,” said Virginia Tech president Charles Steger in a statement. Last spring, many members of the music community were quick to react to the tragedy via song. Jin’s “Rain Rain Go Away” went up on the Web almost immediately, R. Kelly wrote tribute ballad “Rise Up” and Lil Flip, whose MySpace includes a video for his Virginia Tech track, sampled Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time.”

HAS ANYONE NOTICED HOW, WHEN THE CHIPS ARE DOWN AND PEOPLE NEED HELP, RIGHT-WING HARD CORE FREAKS ARE NEVER AROUND? HOW MANY ACTS THAT ARE PRO-WAR AND LEAN TOTALLY TO THE RIGHT, ARE EVER INVOLVED IN CHARITABLE CAUSES LIKE THIS? I NEVER SEE THEM GET INVOLVED…UNLESS IT IS SOMETHING ABOUT TELLING OTHERS HOW TO LIVE THEIR LIVES OR BENEFIT THEM IN SOME WAY.

its pretty cool someone has not forgotten about VTECH – here is some more info on the show: http://coedmagazine.com/entert ainment/Music/1606

anonymous-

lefty douchbags- saving the world one concert at time. This VT is the only genuine concert put on in a while. live earth was a bust and a sham. Besides, toby keith, mellancamp, and willie might have something to say about the right not putting on concerts for a cause. Pretty sure ole vasser is a righty as well. This ranting by a cocky lefty is the reason no one takes these “charitable” acts seriously. you guys bitch just to bitch. shut up and actually support our country for 2 seconds. it actually feels good to be thankful for where you live. yeah, we all know bush is a weener, so quit with the onslaught of jokes and bitching and make sure you actually do something. or, you could be al gore- fight for an unproven cause by smearing hypocracy everywhere you go.

booyakasha | 8/2/2007, 11:18 am EST

The Real | 8/2/2007, 12:15 pm EST

Right wings want to create disasters in the US, ever seen Loose Change? Bush Jr. has ruined this country for decades and all people can do is keep plugging away and trying to make a difference, artists too. Since 90% is left wing anyway, it would be a concert with the last remaining Ramone and Toby Keith, if the right wing were to put one on. Not cool.

Cathy porter, cota,

It is obvious that no example i give will suffice becuase it is not melissa etheridge, green day, or dixie chicks. there are other things going on that dont suck, so quit dwelling on problems that are obvious and overdone. we all know the war is a sham, we all know most people are upset with the gov. but, you will still bitch. smell your own farts, cockmasters! cathy is such a dumbass she equates all potsmokers with the left. so, everything left is cool, right sucks? i think they all suck, like cathy at a pier when the USS Kansas comes in.

Admiring

Richard Legner | 8/2/2007, 5:40 pm EST

cota…cathy…you two are MORONS. Making blanket statements about concervatives is more than idiotic. It’s as bad a racism. Our country has so many problems because people like you (on both sides) are too stupid to realize that politics are not black and white. Your sweeping generalizations about the right are clearly unfounded, we don’t all think the same dumbass.

“you guys are amazing.” Cota, you moron. Only one person in the blog made the statement you are talking about. Not the whole GOP.

I consider myself a “conservative hippie”, which I’ll say Willie probably is too. And quite frankly, people’s close-mindness on both sides pisses me right off.

Richard Legner | 8/2/2007, 5:42 pm EST

by the way…ever heard of Farm Aid, Cathy? Even if not all the artists are right wingers, the cause benfits a predominately conservative crowd.

Man, I just can’t get over how dumb you are.

ms | 8/2/2007, 7:42 pm EST

Aren’t off-topic comments supposed to be deleted? I’m appalled that this thread is all about politics and barely about the concert or VT.

I think the concert is an amazing opportunity for the students, faculty, and staff to relax and start off the year on a positive note. They deserve a chance to celebrate after all the crap they’ve been through, not only with the shooting itself, but with all the media and attention in the aftermath.

Dear Cathy, You know that I really care for you, but your grammar has just pushed me over the edge. Please don’t hate me…The Phantom…CLICK,CLICK…BANG!

VT Alum | 8/3/2007, 10:27 am EST

It’s great to see some artists step up for a good cause – those student have a tough year ahead of them. In case you morons forgot, 32 completely innocent students and faculty of VT were ruthlessly murdered by a psychopath student last April and all you can do is post your selfish, narrow-minded political BS. You might feel different if you actually had some ties to the school like some of us do. This isn’t about you or the right or left, it’s about compassion, healing, and remembering the 32 victims that lost their lives that day. How about keeping all of the politcal crap out of this and simply share your thoughts about what happened or about the free concert. Go Hokies!

nathan | 8/3/2007, 2:03 pm EST

Is Shooter Jennings gonna be in the lineup?
