Jerry Garcia Remembered: Honoring the Grateful Dead Leader on His Birthday

8/1/07, 4:56 pm EST

Today we honor what would have been Jerry Garcia’s sixty-fifth birthday. The Grateful Dead leader died August 9, 1995, and in memoriam we’ve pulled together a photo gallery featuring every Rolling Stone cover on which the one of the greatest guitarists of all time appeared. Also, check out Rolling Stone Contributing Editor Anthony DeCurtis’ Q & A with Garcia, published in 1993, in which the psychedelic pioneer discusses everything from his love of Neal Cassady to the Dead’s grand plan to what he terms his “bad-attitude self.”

BUT EVERYDAY THERE IS SOMEONE MISSING, SOMEONE WHO’S MUSIC & REMINDERS (POSTERS,SHIRTS,STICKERS,TATTO O,ECT.) I HAVE SCATTERED EVERYWHERE CAN ONLY TRY TO FILL THE VOID, BUT NOTHING CAN OR EVER WILL!!!!! EVERY YEAR FOR THE PAST 12 WE’VE CELEBRATED HIS BIRTHDAY WITHOUT HIM & MOURN ON THE DAY THAT HE LEFT US. SINCE THAT DAY EVERYDAY HAS HAD A TOUCH OF GRAY. I’LL MISS YOU FOR ALL THE DAYS & YEARS TO COME, DOWN TO MY LAST ONE AKA (THE BEST ONE!) CAN’T WAIT TO SEE YA THEN, JUST TO SAY “HELLO THERE STRANGER”

12 years on and the loss still gets to me. Wish we had another one of ya. Lord knows we could use the Grateful Dead in these times. Thank you once again, Captain Trips!
