Bullhorn: Did Mark Ronson Turn Bob Dylan Into Amy Winehouse?

7/31/07, 11:38 am EST

Photo: Ronson on Dylan

Now that you’ve had a day to process (the first 30 seconds) of Mark Ronson’s take on Bob Dylan’s “Most Likely You’ll Go Your Way (And I’ll Go Mine)” we want your reviews. We’re thinking it sounds pretty solid: Ronson is famous for making contemporary pop stars sound retro, so it’s no surprise he didn’t totally mangle a forty-one-year-old song. Then again, after a few listens our ears were craving the original. So, your initial response was …

who is bob dylan?

anon | 7/31/2007, 1:00 pm EST

Pretty good, a bit bland. Nothing spectacular.

page | 7/31/2007, 1:16 pm EST

I like it. The horns are a nice touch. The tempo is close enough to the original to retain the cadence of the lyrics. It’s fun.

thecat | 7/31/2007, 1:22 pm EST

Drains all the energy from the original. It sucks.

Richard Legner | 7/31/2007, 1:32 pm EST

eh…who the hell does this think think he is to try to improve on Dylan’s version.

If he had some talent he would make his OWN song to remix.

Anonymous | 7/31/2007, 1:33 pm EST

i agree with anon. thought it was boring and the sound is too played out.

anna | 7/31/2007, 1:38 pm EST

it’s ok…it’s lost some of it’s original grit and country-esque twang, I’d listen to the orignal over this one.

Rob | 7/31/2007, 1:45 pm EST

I’m with Page. I think it’s just fine. Plus, anything that will get Bob’s work in front new listeners works for me. If you’ve ever heard his live shows, you know he’s always changing the arrangements of all of his songs anyway.

Martin | 7/31/2007, 2:02 pm EST

That’s a good way to have the kids listening to Dylan’s stuff.

I like it. There’s a way to get a full version ?

Linda | 7/31/2007, 2:14 pm EST

Well, it’s not the first ever remix … there is a electronica dance version of All Along the Watchtower from earlier this decade … Mark Ronson isn’t the Neptunes, but it’s ok … the word bland keeps popping up …

auramac | 7/31/2007, 2:19 pm EST

I was prepared to hate it- not bad. Of course, after a listen or two I’d go back to the original and never listen to this again.

JudasConstant | 7/31/2007, 2:47 pm EST

For me it was a song that didn’t really stand out on *Blonde on Blonde*, probably less to do with it’s merits as a song and more to do with stiff competition from all the other legendary tracks on that record. Ronson’s version adds a touch of soul with that great two-note horn riff, without sounding kitsch which is probably the biggest risk you take when you remix a forty year old track. Although I don’t find harmonicas grating, give me brass over harp any day. I’m a fan of this version and will be checking out Ronson’s work in the near future.

Evan | 7/31/2007, 3:11 pm EST

It’s all right I guess, but its merely a crapstain compared to the original.

camelprod | 7/31/2007, 3:14 pm EST

Nice novelty, nothing more

Burnt Crispies | 7/31/2007, 3:31 pm EST

check out that pic of dylan above. what’s up his ass with that sour puss? dude looks like he needs to get laid.

MW | 7/31/2007, 4:09 pm EST

I actually liked it.Its not as good as the original..but its not horrible.

LaLaTron | 7/31/2007, 4:22 pm EST

Love it! He actually makes Dylan sound like he’s singing a melody — great great stuff…

Kay | 7/31/2007, 4:29 pm EST

I wanted to hate it. But I don’t. It is actually not too bad.

Johnny Kickass | 7/31/2007, 4:35 pm EST

I’m still not convinced why we’re supposed to care about Bob Dylan.

Linda | 7/31/2007, 4:54 pm EST

Commenter ‘liar’, on the bottom, I hope you’re joking.

Anyways I thought it sounded good, but definately not like the origanal! And I think cover songs are okay, but not if the person is trying to make themselves sound better than the original. Anyways at least people appreciate Bob Dylan! Of course they do, he’s a classic.

J R Handy | 7/31/2007, 5:10 pm EST

Just plain crap!

J R Handy | 7/31/2007, 5:11 pm EST

If you want to hear a superior version check out the “Before the Flood” version with The Band.

Little Oscar | 7/31/2007, 6:57 pm EST

It’s like trying to repain the Mona Lisa — what’s the point. You can’t really improve on the original, unless it’s Dylan himself, Dylanizing it….

Stjepan | 7/31/2007, 11:06 pm EST

Blows….no pun intended. Seriously when is Mark Ronson going to do a track that isn’t sampled, or doesn’t include a horn section

GhostofTomWaits | 7/31/2007, 11:33 pm EST

There have been some great alternate versions of Bob Dylan songs. This is not one of them. The horns sound all wrong. For shame Mark, For shame!!

Mike | 8/1/2007, 1:14 am EST

Do we really need to modernize a timeless talent? No, I believe.

Anonymous | 8/1/2007, 1:59 am EST

didnt like it and didnt get the point of doing it in the first place.

it’s like, “hey, guys, let’s re-cut The Godfather to make it more cool, cuz you know it’s not good enough right now!”

just a load of buuulll shheeeiit.

hotter than august | 8/1/2007, 4:24 am EST

its fair but flat.

y know whats good? mouuse T’s ’sun is shining’ marley club cover- marley is pretty much as revered as zimmy but mousse t did a wayyy better cover than mark the spark ronson

Steph | 8/1/2007, 6:23 am EST

Just not good, nothing on the original.

Taltos1667 | 8/1/2007, 7:53 am EST

I’m glad I could only hear 30 seconds of this mess.

Ragman | 8/1/2007, 11:29 am EST

Utter crap. Don’t this to any of Dylan’s other songs.

rosa | 8/1/2007, 12:49 pm EST

everything he always does. it just makes me think about how much more ronson must respect winehouse than dylan. what a twat.

T-Bone | 8/1/2007, 1:17 pm EST

I was expecting something a bit more drastic. There hasn’t been much done on this track other than injecting some horns and turning the guitars way down low. It’s not bad but it’s nothing to get excited about either.

Kieran | 8/1/2007, 3:43 pm EST

It’s neither fish nor fowl: not catchy enough for a remix, nor too much of a departure from the original arrangement.

Nor is it ballsy enough for a rock song.

It’s kind of perfunctory, safe and won’t make an impact, other than as a consequence of “who’s remixed who”.

LIBERTINE | 8/1/2007, 5:22 pm EST

r u kidding me? what’s the point? not an improvement and the mix is terrible….dude should just remix a few rap tracks or something…B on B should be sharpened up but NOT updated by this guy!!!

EuropeanSon | 8/2/2007, 6:32 am EST

If the intention was to introduce Dylan to a new audience then I sense total failure. If Ronson has totally chopped the song up and left only a hint at the original then it would have been better. As it is this sounds like an early demo for the original.

EuropeanSon | 8/2/2007, 6:35 am EST

OOps – I mean ‘if Ronson HAD totally chopped…’

Leave the riff and the odd lyric – Ronson has been lazy. A shame.

Lamintone58 | 8/3/2007, 1:07 pm EST

Sounds like Dylan-meets-a-3rd-rate-Motown- band, and this train wreck is the result. Doesn’t Mark have anything better to do with his time? Apparently not!

Norman | 8/3/2007, 1:43 pm EST

Why not introduce more of the world to Bob Dylan through remakes. For those of you who don’t know Dylan, get at least one classic album, listen and discover why he is the legend he is. He has got about ten masterpiece albums to choose from and the others are very good.

Dylas | 8/3/2007, 6:00 pm EST

Well Ronson did go his way. I think he needs to find another. It’s rubbish. I wonder what Bob thinks of this. Looking by the picture above is he giving it the thumbs, or rather, mouth down?

mcc | 8/3/2007, 9:29 pm EST

Absolutely horrible. There are so many fabulous remakes / mixes of Dylan songs that are really good (Masked and Anonymous, Sue Foley, instrumentals like Pickin’ on Dylan) that this bad attempt at Bob hip-hop is silly. The bass is just too much and he doesn’t get the feel of the song.

Paul | 8/5/2007, 12:01 am EST

It sucks ass.

Mitch Perkins | 8/5/2007, 6:22 pm EST

I appreciate very much the work Ronson has done with Amy Winehouse. That collaboration is a winner… horn arrangements and production top notch (except for the unnecessary Ghostface Killah Krap). However when I sample Ronson’s own album I find that his horn charts are what I’ve always considered to be “square”; they sound amateurish, unappealing. His take on Britney’s “Toxic” is unlistenable. Frankly, I do like the percussion track on this Dylan sample; a remix of this Dylan track was a good idea… they picked the wrong guy to do it.

Another failure at improving on Dylan’s original work. Funny how hundreds have tried, and only Hendrix succeeded.

NotMozart | 8/6/2007, 8:04 pm EST

its bland, not as interesting as the Little Less Conversation remix of a couple of years ago. Still, the best version of the song is the live version with The Band from Before the Flood.

bazzer the blob | 8/8/2007, 3:22 am EST

lets hope this is the nail in ronson’s musical cofin.

It amazing how narrow-minded most of the responses here are.

The remix doesn’t “set the world on fire” for me, but it is not bad. The comments of those that haven’t heard the entire track, and posted comments (one way or another) really should be taken with sekpticism…

drifter | 11/6/2007, 8:04 am EST

people who remix other peoples songs are NOT musicians!

he’s crap, and should be stopped from ruining good music

mike | 1/17/2008, 6:20 pm EST

well it’s ok isn’t it really? and i kinda enjoyed the video… i suppose it’s easy to scrunch your face up all yuck but why bother, you’ll get all wrinkly…
