Postscript: Farewell to Tom Snyder

7/30/07, 6:48 pm EST

Talk show host Tom Snyder, who passed away Sunday at his San Francisco home from leukemia at age 71, was known for his frank interviews with everyone from Charles Manson to KISS to Meat Loaf (who he evidently referred to as “Meat Ball”). With a jazzy catchphrase (”Fire up a colortini, sit back, relax and watch the pictures, now, as they fly through the air”) and an interest in questioning subjects from all reaches of the culture, Snyder was a truly curious — and rock & roll appreciating — television personality. Check out a few of his greatest hits — interviews with Jerry Garcia and Ken Kesey, U2 and Public Image Ltd. — after the jump.

I don’t know who’s more fucked up in that interview Ken Kesey or Tom Snyder. It’s sad that he died, but the guy was a fuckin’ goofball(He was no Larry KIng.)! Dan Akroyd and Joe Piscopo made fun of him mercilessly. Enjoyed KISS interview, though. It was fun to watch Ace and Peter, completely wasted, having a great time and watching Gene become increasingly more and more pissed. Gene thinks himself a well spoken genius. It was really refreshing to see these two Brooklyn boys from the street brimming with aw-shucks aura towards rock stardom. Ace’s Space Oracle continually beamed out purple light overwhleming the studio camera. Very cool. Ace was Ace and he told you so! Definitely a highly underrated lead guitar player. Definitely had his own “spacey” sound!

I grew up watching Jack Parr, Dick Cavett, and Johnny Carson. As provocative and entertaining as they were, Tom Snyder’s show provided a refreshing forum and intimacy for interviewing entertainers, politicians, and newsmakers. He was as full of himself as the other hosts, but his show was much more engaging. Thank you for your tribute. Elisa
