That’s a Supergroup? British Poll Generates Unusual Results

7/27/07, 9:42 am EST

Photo: Freddie Mercury

Freddie Mercury, Jimi Hendrix, Elton John and Phil Collins would form the best supergroup — according to a recent U.K. poll, that is. Over 2,400 people responded to a marketing ploy by new London venue the O2 and matched up rockers to form a single wonder-band. The second most popular combo linked up the talents of Eric Clapton, Bono, Stevie Wonder and Ringo Starr. Maybe our minds are still reeling from Damnocracy, but here’s a question: What exactly passes for a supergroup these days? Does Velvet Revolver count? Rock Star: Supernova? The Good, the Bad and the Queen? Fantômas?

What is the U.K.’s obsession with Freddie Mercury?

SATAN | 7/27/2007, 10:20 am EST

Kurt Cobain and Jesse Lacey of Brand new on guitars and vocals, Pal Macca on bass and backing vocals, Meg White on drums, Brandon Flowers on keyboard and Trent Reznor in the noise department. Wide enough range for ya ?

The only true British Super Group was Monty Python includeds one Yank. I thought Velvet Revolver was GNR with a different singer.

AmoriZep | 7/27/2007, 10:38 am EST

Jack White?!?!?!?!

if we’re talking all American band members then….

HENDRIX – lead guitar!…is there any question about that?!?!
Flea – bass
Stevie Wonder – vocals/piano
Stewart Copeland – Drums

i’m salivating at the thought!!!

HOWEVER…

if it’s just supergroup overall…

i’d call Led Zep that and call it a day…as i prefer every member of that band as a musician over any other….that’s just my opinion of course…

MEG WHITE ON DRUMS????? ARE YOU SERIOUS???? I like the White Stripes as much as the next, but she has no part in a supergroup come on man! Ok….here ya go…ON DRUMS: CARTER BEAUFORD-DMB. BASS: VICTOR WOOTEN OR FLEA (coin toss really). VOCALS: MICK JAGGER (not a big fan, but he is the ultimate front man). If you wanna get crazy then KEYBOARD/ORGAN: RAY MANZERACK-THE DOORS. Dang, so many different ways I could go with this. Before I do, I want to say that Audioslave was a great super group in my opinion. They put out 3, very solid CDs.

To me, it only makes sense to choose people that are still living, you know… so it would maybe actually happen…

Ok, here we go:

Jack White – Guitar
Jimmy Chamberlin – Drums
Flea – Bass
Claudio Sanchez – Guitar
Dave Grohl – Vocals (though he is an excellent drummer… the dude has really proved himself to be a great vocalist over the years. He’s got the best rock star “growl” when he belts out the heavy tunes, and he proved with the Foo’s last album, that he’s an excellent singer for softer songs, if the band wanted to do any that is!)

Dang, that was really tough! There are so many great artists out there!!!

OK, as a Brit I can’t apologise enough – is that from some point in the late 80s?

AmoriZep – good shout, could just leave it at Led Zep, but that is a bit dull

Its hard to mix generations so two shots from me: Jagger (vocals) Jimmy Page and Jimi Hendrix (guitars) John Entwhistle (bass) and John Bonham (drums) or Kurt Cobain (guitar/vocal) Josh Homme (guitar/vocal) Johnny Greenwood (guitar, xylophone, piano, etc) Flea (bass) and Dave Grohl (drums).

Dean | 7/27/2007, 11:06 am EST

I just have to say, that even though they were a group and not really a “super group”, I think Zeppelin was and still is AWESOME! I was originally going to pair up Jack White with Robert Plant and Flea, and Dave Grohl on Drums. But then, I was thinking:

The team of Plant, Page, Bonham, and Jones was “super” enough!

Ummm | 7/27/2007, 11:07 am EST

Eddie Van Halen – Guitar
Alex Van Halen – Drums

That’d do for me. The best super group is the Wilburys. Dylan, Orbison, Petty and Harrison. Brilliant.

Frank Zappa – guitar and madness
Vic Wooten – bass
Billy Preston – keys

Dean | 7/27/2007, 11:18 am EST

Ok, here’s my second option:

Jack and Meg White are pretty awesome. So, this is not a dis on Meg, cuz I think she’s great, but I think it would be cool to see Jack White and Jimmy Chamberlin together… just to see what Jack could come up with, with a different, faster drumming style. Most White Stripes fans will not insist on it, but have probably thought it would be cool if Jack added some bass, so I’d have to go with Flea. But that’s it, just the 3 of them.

Meg White may not be the fastest, but she is solid, her presence is definately known. Unlike a lot of drummers, she has a signature sound along the lines of a more powerful Ringo. To dismiss her is just silly. She has discovered how to say alot with a little and she really is a cornerstone drummer, very reliable. Plus, she’s a girl, we need to mix it up with a little flare, the purpose of a supergroup is to push the limits of songwriting and showmanship.

given the seeming inability for massive supergroups to function smoothly…here’s a streamline realistic one that stylistically would probably actually work:

guitar: john mayer (i know i know, but it’d work well)
bass: flea
piano/vocals: ben folds
drums: carter beauford (dmb)

James Murphy [LCD Soundsystem] – Vocal
Nick Zinner [Yeah Yeah Yeahs] – guitar

Matt Tong [Bloc Party] – Drums

(: That would be nice.

These are only people who are still alive. You could make a lot of relly awesome supergroups with dead people. You could probably call them the Grateful Dead (yes, a pun is very much intended)

Roger Waters on bass? Are you kidding?

Lead Guitar: Hendrix
Rhythm: Slash
Vocalist: Bono
Bass: Flea
Drums: Bonham

Should be extremely interesting with Slash’s bluesy riffs backing Hendrix’s god-like playing. Flea and Bonham both seem at odds but they each have power and flexibility. Bono with the soaring vocals.

Leftovers/alternates

In that vein, I present Edge playing guitar in the absence of David Gilmour, with Syd having produced and contributed on every album since Dark Side of the Moon instead of having gone insane……yeah, supergroup.

Fuck off.

I’m going to make two since my ideal supergroup may not technically be “super” by definition.

Vocals: Bono
Guitar/vocals: John Lennon
Bass/vocals: Paul McCartney
Keys: Elton John
Drums: Stewart Copeland

And I have to say, Meg White is pretty rad. She has a very original style, but I’ve notice that most trained musicians spontaneously combust at the mention of her. It’s an interesting thing.

Also, the dude from Sigur Ros is Jon Birgisson….good pick.

1) Harry Nilsson Lead/Harmony Vocals/Songwriter

2) Grace Slick: Occasional Lead/Backup singer occasional guitar and piano

3) John Lennon: Rhythym Guitar/Songwriter

4) Paul McCartney: Bass/Songwriter

5) George Harrison: Lead Guitar–I love his timing, his work on the Imagine album and the solo from “You’re Gonna Lose that Girl” put him ahead of other guitarists who might be slightly better. Plus he’s worked well with the principle songwriters (John, Harry and Paul)

6) Neil Peart-Drums. If this band was more of a rocking band, I’d pick Moon the Loon for sure, but I think they might have rocking and slower moments, so I’d pick someone who I think it more accustomed to playing any style (Even if he’s in a hard rock trio). I think he is more of a true virtuoso than Keith Moon and for a band like this I think that’s what they’d need most.

The guys above can all dabble enough on other instruments to fill in the gaps.

I’d say the best guy to produce them would be either George Martin or Richard Perry, either one maybe rotating album to album. THey’d need to record at Abbey Road.

JD | 7/30/2007, 5:37 pm EST

What a sweet question.
For lead vocals, you can’t be JIM MORRISON’s charisma.
FLEA on bass, I think his passion would mesh well with Morrison.
TOM MORELLO on lead guitar…just sick
GEORGE HARRISON on rythm guitar, he doesn’t have a problem taking a lesser role, is still an immense talent, and I think he would keep Morrison in control
The role of the drummer is tough to pick…Stewart Copeland couldn’t stand being so overshadowed, I’m going with JOHN BONHAM
What couldn’t this group do musically?

Ginger Baker and Dick Dale … bassists, keyboard players and singers need not apply.

I’d give my right nip to see this group live, probably the best live show of all time:
Otis Redding – vocals
Andre 3000 (OutKast) – rap
Jimi Hendrix – Lead
Eric Clapton – 2nd Lead
Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers) – Bass
Keith Moon (The Who) – drums
Jerry Lee Lewis – keyboards

I’d give my left nip to see if this one would work:
Celine Dion – vocals
Ice Cube (N.W.A.) – rap
Kurt Cobain (Nirvana) – Lead
C.C. Deville (Poison) – 2nd Lead
Sid Vicious (Sex Pistols) – Bass
Meg White – Drums
Barry Manilow – Keyboards

Most of the ‘bands’ mentioned here have half of their line up dead, so it’s all crap. Use the living people, they have got more to say :)

Vocals – Mike Patton (Chris Cornell if Mike says no)
Bass – Les Claypool (Rob Trujjilio if Les is busy)
Guitar – George Lynch (Zakk Wylde if George is doing more weights)
Drums – Chris Kontos (original Machinehead drummer) (and if he’s dead, then Dave Lombardo)

Well The best musician of all time, Kurt Cobain is dead so you cant have a super group. Really Nirvana were the best supergroup.
Kurt Cobain- Great guitarist and outstaning vocalist.
Kirst novelistic- Great bass player
Dave Grohl- Fantastic hard hitting drummer

Axle Rose sucks.
