Heavy Metal is a widely misunderstood thing. I personally believe it saved my life. In 2001 my favourite band Swedens “The Haunted” released an album “The Haunted Made Me Do It” In which nearly every song is about Murder and Ritual. But at the same time the whole point of calling it “The Haunted Made Me Do It” Was a direct fuck you to the people who do these kinds of things blame Metal for it. The thing you need to realise is. These people were sick to begin with. Satanism and its representation in metal are hilarious theatrics. I have read a few Satanic Doctrines and its alot more humanist than anything. Its just about misinterpretation and ignorance on the behalfs of the musicians and the record companies. The Satan they are plugging is Big Red has Horns and a pointy Stick. If you didnt realise already its the people on here posting “OH MY GOD HEAVY METAL IS THE DEVIL!” That makes it even more appealing. I believe that anyone who listens to metal and is changed for the greater good than it is good. Some bands do the whole satanic thing for a show and a gimmick I doubt it is serious at all. ON my computer I have about 4,000 song by, 125 Artists, of 334 Albums.

I’ve been collecting CDs for just 7 years and 334 CD is not even a dent in the 1000s that are out there that I have not picked up or have yet to discover.

That 700 hundred doesn’t meet my 4000 even by 5 fold, even at 6 fold it just passes me by 200.

What am I saying is you can’t say crap when your research is based on less than an individuals collection.

Metal is not satanic, in fact over half the artists who compose metal thank GOD on their album sleeves. Some artists just pretend to be Satanic because they know it just pisses ignorant people off.

If you ask me metal is to music as Edgar Allen Poe was to poetry and short stories. If a band sings about Satan it doesnt make them satanic. Take Slayer for instance who have a load of satanic songs. 3 out of 4 of them are Christians and the 4th is atheist so he doesnt even believe Satan exist (note: Kerry King is the atheist).

Any songs about satan or murder is about viewing things in a darker light. Metal is sick and tired of all the happy cheerful songs, so they pick the taboo subject, darkness, evil, Hell, etc. They say beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, well metal sees beauty in Hell. Come on, the most popular book in The Bible is the Book of Revelation, the book about the apocalypse and war and death.

Dante wrote three books about the afterlife and out of all of them, the one where he visits Hell is the most popular (even more so than the one about Heaven). Its impossible to say that darkness and evil doesnt attract peoples attention and have a profound effect on them. If the news reports a child who skipped 3 grades, nobody watches. If the news reports a child who was raped and murdered, the world watches in shock and dismay.

Metal finds beauty in Hell. They dont accept it, they dont approve of it, but its here in our world and metal knows that. Oh and like others have said, thats the few metal bands who do sing about satan. Megadeth sings about war and politics, and german band Rammstein has a bunch of songs that are stupid fun (come on, Zwitter is about hermaphrodites and Amerika is the band making fun of the US).

What about when you watch a crime drama, where someone for instance gets shot; is that going to make you go out and shoot someone? It’s the same principle and don’t try and argue.

The fact is that metal is very aggressive music, and it does link directly to the aggressive human temperment. What is wrong with that? If anything it allows you to become familiar with your feelings and learn to tame them.

People who try and bottle up their aggression/depression/etc. are damaging themselves. Metal certainly helps people with frustrating emotions because it lets people realise that “Hey, this guy is singing about exactly the way I’m feeling.”

When I am ever angry or frustrated over something, this music definitely helps. It confirms to you that other people feel the same way you do.

However, emo music is pure bullshit. Nobody can argue against that.
