How Heavy Is Heavy Metal? Pretty Damn Heavy, Says Russian Study

7/27/07, 4:43 pm EST

A new Russian study finds that roughly 50 percent of heavy metal songs are about murder, while another 35 percent dabble in Satanic content. Fyodor Kondratyev, a professor at the Serbsky State Research Center for Social and Forensic Psychiatry, listened to 700 heavy metal songs before coming to his conclusion that the slogan “Sex, Drugs and Rock & Roll” should be changed to “Murder, Satan & Heavy Metal.” The study is clearly flawed, however, as Kondratyev doesn’t disclose what bands he listened to, and whether those bands are of American or Russian descent. Besides, everyone knows Satan likes Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath, while Jesus rocks out to Carrie Underwood. This study did leave us wondering though: What constitutes heavy metal? Did he listen to Pantera, or did he listen to the Darkness? Can this guy detect irony? Maybe it’s time for news reporters to return to covering the evils of heavy metal instead of the hilarious danger that emo poses to society.

google megadeth the name has a meaning it stands for (a mass of people dead due to NUCLEAR WAR)
not satanic shit.Listen to his songs, he doesnt have to scream or drink or do drugs (which he gave up thanks to CHRISTIANITY) all you ignorant bastards should stop bashing metal. some metal is all blues scales played paster… chromatic, pentatonic whatever
metal is for people who think ahead and see whats going to happen with society. i believe murder is caused by hiphop from the 90´s era so fuck you ignorant assholes

Heavy Metal is a widely misunderstood thing. I personally believe it saved my life. In 2001 my favourite band Swedens “The Haunted” released an album “The Haunted Made Me Do It” In which nearly every song is about Murder and Ritual. But at the same time the whole point of calling it “The Haunted Made Me Do It” Was a direct fuck you to the people who do these kinds of things blame Metal for it. The thing you need to realise is. These people were sick to begin with. Satanism and its representation in metal are hilarious theatrics. I have read a few Satanic Doctrines and its alot more humanist than anything. Its just about misinterpretation and ignorance on the behalfs of the musicians and the record companies. The Satan they are plugging is Big Red has Horns and a pointy Stick. If you didnt realise already its the people on here posting “OH MY GOD HEAVY METAL IS THE DEVIL!” That makes it even more appealing. I love it, it speaks to Millions of people around the world and connects with them. If you don’t understand that now you never will. So don’t try, leave it alone. You either love it or hate it. Its just one of those things. Its passionate thought out and enigmatic. Also to all of you that judge it have no idea about it and thinks its a talentless thing. Lets see you write Aesthetics of Hate by Machine Head or a Cryptopsy song. Until then don’t talk about things you don’t understand and stay safe in your suburban dreamscape.

Metal? Like the plates in your moronic angry little heads? Donnie and Marie were cutting edge once too! Low budget, talentless garbage.

this survey sucks - whats the point of it? metal is what it is - like it or leave it. nobody is forced to listen to it. And let’s get this straight once and for all: The Darkness are about at metal as Keith Chegwin (google him).

I think it’s naive to claim that metal is all just a bit of fun. Most of the successful artists have sold their souls to make it. If you’re desperate enough to make it as a rockstar then selling your soul doesn’t seem like such a bad deal. Google ” They sold their souls for Rock and Roll” Video. I used to be a big fan of Metallica but it’s empty music.

Metal slips past a lot of people because it isn’t “catchy” like other genres. That makes people look at metal behind a prejudice eye. And look at all the songs that are connected to drugs and alcohol!?! Far more people have been hurt from those than from being exposed to “Satan.”

Wow…thats one foolish russian. Let me guess..he listend to some Slayer and Venom and went “z0mg!!!111!!! Slayer and Venom are satnist!!!11111!!!” I have oh…about 200 metal songs on my i-tunes account, how many talk about Murder? About 3. about satan? 1 and thats about how evil satan is. Thats only my i-tunes. Most of that supposed “Satan worship” is all for shock image.

I CAN GRUNT INTO A MICROPHONE AND GROWL! GRRR! I’M METAL! RAWR!

please… all this is childish attempts at sounding grown up and tough. It just ends up sounding ridiculous. You need more than a heavy bass and chain smoking lead singer to make metal. Anyone can do that. Well, maybe not prepubescent girls, but thats only because their voices arent that deep. Its no different than the rappers who try acting like they are actually half as bad as they say they are. ‘I got shot! that means whatever I say is deep and meaningful. hurrr!’

Screaming and whining and turning the amps up to ‘11′ does not true heavy metal make. True metal has soul and passion. Not guys prancing around in halloween costumes.
