Do you actually like the music you write about? Or do you actively and consciously try to find the most obscure and underwhelming stuff out there so that you can sound like you’re ahead of the masses at every turn?

Thanks, you’re the best!

Previously, you have covered bands like the Black Crowes. A band with a devout following but seems to have fallen out of favor with the masses. What do you think brought upon that? Was it the band unwilling to pander or pop culture and it’s fickle ways? Do they have a chance of regaining their popularity?

susan | 7/30/2007, 1:25 pm EST

I wanted to attend Crossroads in Chicago last weekend and feel badly to have missed it. Will it be on PBS soon and is there a time pattern to when the next one will be? I love RS and give subscriptions as gifts when I can. Thanks

(1) What new bands do you like that have not received the fan base and public recognition they deserve?
(2) What publications do you read to stay on top of the music scene?
(3) Do you still go to shows and clubs or do you send your staff and have them report to you?

What are the top 5 questions you try to answer when writing a review?

marnr67 | 8/3/2007, 12:33 pm EST

I’ve got a few questions:

Up until last issue with your review of the latest Korn, I don’t think I’ve ever read a mostly negative review by you (or at least any review of yours that wasn’t 3 stars or higher) during my 5 years as a Rolling Stone subscriber. Why is that?

What’s the best trick as a journalist to curb your admiration of a subject during an interview? Or rather, how do you keep your interviews with Iggy Pop and Mick Jagger as objective as say a subject who isn’t legendary?

You’ve profiled everyone from The Police to the Chili Peppers, what’s your craziest interivew story?

You’ve famously (to some infamously) quoted for stating that Phish were “the most important band of the 90s”. Do you still stand by that claim? If so, divulge.

When RS compiled their ballots for the 500 Greatest Albums Ever Made issue, what did you list as your number 1? Feel free to divulge any of the rest of your 50.

At what point did you decide you wanted to go into Music Journalism in your younger years?

You’ve done liner notes for the re-issues for Lou Reed’s Metal Machine Music, ACDC’s Back in Black, the 1995 Velvet Underground box set, and recently recieved a Grammy nom for your work for the Byrds’ box set. Any tips for writing liner notes to classics? What was your favorite to do? Did any of those records intimidate your creative process?

Matt F | 8/3/2007, 12:51 pm EST

How many spins does a new record get before it’s reviewed?

Who is the worst to interview?

Any review regrets?

Hopeful | 8/3/2007, 12:57 pm EST

Have you heard the new album by canadian rocker Matthew Good – titled Hospital Music? This one of the best records I have ever heard. Almost haunting. It would be really cool to see you guys review this record to see how he stacks up as a songwriter compared to the american songwriters you review – Ryan Adams, Jesse malin etc. His albums go to number one in Canada and unknown in the states. Might even make your magazine a little more North American. Have good day.

Brendan | 8/3/2007, 1:52 pm EST

Hi David,

Have you ever heard/seen Eli “The Paperboy” Reed and the True Loves? I would be curious to read you take on him.

Thanks.

;-) | 8/3/2007, 1:58 pm EST

1. How many records have you rated five stars?

2. When you rated Beck’s Sea Change five stars, did you regret that someone else had rated Odelay, considered Beck’s magnum opus by many critics, four stars? Would you have rated Odelay differently?

3. Rolling Stone is known for not handing five-star ratings willy-nilly. But if it were possible to alter the past, which albums rated (not necessarily by you) less than five stars would you now grant the status of classics?

Thanks!

One Fish Two Fish | 8/3/2007, 2:00 pm EST

You guys are morons. It says send your question to the above email address.

Brien Comerford | 8/3/2007, 2:03 pm EST

You admire my favorite band “The Church” and my favorite guitarist, Jeff Beck. Is there anyway you could do an interview or profile of either of them for the magazine edition.

Wayne | 8/3/2007, 2:20 pm EST

I gotta know David….What’s with the hair?

Horse-Toothed Jackass | 8/3/2007, 2:43 pm EST

Yeah I got some rock-related questions:

(1) What are the best bands to listen to when you’re stoned?

(2) Have you ever screwed any famous female artists or musicians that we may have heard of?

(3) Do any bands or artists pay you off so that RS gives a favorable album review of 3 1/2 or higher stars?

Britt | 8/3/2007, 3:28 pm EST

Im an aspriring rock journalist. what advice could you give me if i pursue a carrer in this field?

The Skip Spence tribute concert at the Rio Theater in Santa Cruz last night (Friday, June 20th) was awesome. Omar Spence sings exactly like his late father. The first class, all star band played the best Moby Grape concert since 1968. Bring this band out to New York City now. It comes with a multimedia light show, complete with a personalized, narrative history of the Skip family. This concert should get coverage in Rolling Stone magazine. It was the rock event of the year.

jenna Andrews | 11/12/2008, 11:28 am EST

Hey david I don’t know if you still check thhis site anymore or the comments on it but incase you do I wanted to elt you know of a new band you check out, Their name is Dante from Colombia South America and although they only have few songs on their website and myspace I have a feeling those boys might be new big upcomers in the rock n roll world. I’ll leave you the myspace link on here http://www.myspace.com/danterockband

Mike Stevens | 1/8/2009, 11:01 am EST

David,
I am starting a campaign to get ledgedary session bassist Joe Osborn into the Rock Hall of Fame under the Sidemen category. The only session bassist currently in the Hall is James Jamerson. Joe has played on 197 Top 40 hits, including 19 number one songs over his career. Ironically, several of the people he played on these songs with are already included (i.e., drummer Hal Blaine and guitarist James Burton). I know you are on the nominating committee and would like to get some comments from you regarding the best way to proceed. My e-mail address is: stevens1212@msn.com

Thanks,
Mike Stevens
