They were a bunch of idiots who made weird ugly noises. How about blowing up their LPs the way disco records were at Commisky Park in 1979?

Seth | 7/26/2007, 7:04 pm EST

Warped tour is a joke, their “handling fees” run up to more than the cost of the ticket itself. That’s why Ozzfest is pulling the “free” schtik quite well.

Fuck Fall Out Boy.

discosucks | 7/26/2007, 7:44 pm EST

They rebelled against disco music.
That was the whole point.

anarchy reissued!

Who Cares? | 7/27/2007, 2:39 pm EST

You’re right, disco. They rebelled against music that sucked to make music that sucked even more.

“If we had an aim, it was to force our own, working-class opinions into the mainstream, which was unheard of in pop music at the time.”
~Johnny Rotten

“The Sex Pistols are remembered for communicating directly with their audiences. Bands who have been influenced by the Sex Pistols include The Offspring, The Clash, Siouxsie & the Banshees, Nirvana, Oasis, The Fall, Green Day, and Guns N’ Roses.”

Sex Pistols | 7/27/2007, 4:55 pm EST

Johnny Rotten? HORSESHIT,HORSESHIT,HORSESHIT, HORSESHIT!!!

Hmmm... | 7/27/2007, 5:05 pm EST

Bring their working class opinions into the mainstream? Didn’t the Beatles, The Stones and The Who do that already? By the way, all those great bands you mentioned, would’ve still been great if there were no Sex Pistols; believe me. Great bands find a way to get it done; these bands would’ve got the job done with or without the fuckin’ Sex Pistols. Your’s Truly, Classic “Rock”

dear hmm... | 7/27/2007, 8:12 pm EST

A typical “maintream” classic rock fan wouldn’t be expected to understand anything about the underground punk rock movement during the 70’s, so your comment is irrelevant.

rockbutterfly | 7/27/2007, 10:42 pm EST

My tastes are extremely diverse, and touch down in all areas of rock.I have references that you probably never heard of and you probably have references I don’t know about. What interests me now is what other bands you like. I think Radiohead is amazing. Likewise, I think Led Zeppelin is one of the most important bands ever. I liked Nirvana’s Unplugged concert, because the acoustic set allowed me to hear hidden melodies and I got to hear Kurt’s wonderfully wounded voice. I love some of Paul Willaims stuff especially “Bitter Honey” “Someday Man” and “Rainy Days and Nondays” But his best work is on the Phantom of the Paradise soundtrack. If you get a chance to see it,see it. (You can buy it at Amazon.com. And if you dig the movie, you’ll want the Soundtrack. I love Peter Gabriel Genesis. Watcher of the Skies, Supper’s Ready, The Fifth of Firth is a good place to start. All the live footage of this stuff you can see and youtube.com,of course. Well, I love music and I have a passion for talking about music I love. The truth of the matter is I really just don’t connect with them, but these comments are mostly me being in a bad mood and getting it out by being a smart ass snot. And that’s really the mmotivation behing my comments. What are you gonna do? Write back if you want to talk about stuff that you like. Your pal in Rock, Mike. Peace

at least somebody cares | 7/28/2007, 1:17 am EST

rockbutterfly,
Thanks for your comments. Music is such a broad topic…I was brought up on the classic-rock genre, and around electric guitars a lot since I was a kid…was later into alt-rock during the 80’s before it really went mainstream. Punk was one genre, then there were bands like REM, Talking Heads, RHCP, Jane’s Addiction, The Replacements, etc. Absolutely love Nirvana, PJ, AIC, TOOL…and Radiohead is great too. As far as The Sex Pistols are concerned, I am probably among a minority who can actually listen to them, and would rather not get into some heated argument with a boomer who was probably disco-dancing during the 70’s era. Classic rock has been overplayed too much over the years. How many more Boston songs can anybody take before the stereo gets thrown out the window?

Dear At Leat Somebdy | 7/29/2007, 4:30 pm EST

Nope I’m not a baby boomer. I was 7 years old when Saturday Night Fever came out. I think all the Led Zeppelin records are important. Being such a huge Led Zeppelin I fan, I’ve been asked thousands of times what was my faovorite album was, and I’ve named EVERY ALBUM at one point as my favorite.

Dear At Least Somebody | 7/29/2007, 4:36 pm EST

I wrote this thing it’s called The 12 DAZE of REHAB which is right below us. Basically no one has read this thing; I think it’s pretty funny. It’s a song set to the 12 Days of Christmas. I Hope you can do me a solid and check it out. Appreciate it –Rockbutterfly

at least somebody cares | 7/29/2007, 6:33 pm EST

Rockbutterfly,
I was around 10 or 11 when Saturday Night Fever came out. My parents had the album. That whole disco-craze was such a huge phenomenon, but it sure burned out quickly. Later during the 80’s I worked at an alternative music publication, which was interestingly the same one which Bob Gelfof worked at early in his career as a music critic. Got a lot of exposure to underground & alt music while working there. Led Zep is also great (saw Page & Plant the last time they toured together – was just like a Zep concert!). Took a look at your “12 Daze” prose – I thought that it was funny; like a parody they might use in a Saturday Night Live skit. At first I thought it might have been written about Paris or something, but I wasn’t sure – LOL.
What is your honest opinion about The Sex Pistols?

Dear 4th Dimension | 7/29/2007, 8:48 pm EST

Yes it’s defintely a Paris/Lindsay/Nicole/Britney parody thing. It just came to me. I didn’t know what the hell to do with it, so I posted it here. Thanks for reading it. The Sex Pistols, I don’t know how I feel, really. I heard the record a few times, but it didn’t leave a real lasting impression on me. A friend of mine who just died recently, who was in quite a few bands with me, exposed me to a lot of stuff like the Plasmatics, Ramones,Pixies, The Runaways and stuff like that. But the ones who really blew my head off were the New York Dolls. They were considered a glam band, but I think they were the first to really bring the punk sound down. I really was more into the New Wave stuff like the Police,Elvis Costello, the Talking Heads and Blondie. I thought they took the punk thing and made into something much more appealing to me. Are you still involved with music publication? I’m a musician and my goal is to produce a record with me singing and playing all the instruments. I’m trying to do something really unique, so I’m approaching it almost like a director would go about making a film: a lot of pre-production! I have pieces of things written for a rock and roll movie that will probably turn into a vehicle for these songs. I don’t know for sure yet; it’s still in my belly and not quite ready to be born yet. I went to college to be a jounalist, so I’m trying to write some pieces for a resume. I post crazy shit all over this thing. Maybe in the future, I’ll let you know where some of the treasure is buried. I’ll keep an eye out for you and we can talk again!–Rockbutterfly

4th Dimension | 7/29/2007, 10:11 pm EST

Rockbutterfly,
I’m not with the music publication anymore…I’m actually a visual artist/designer, and I worked in their art department (hence my alternative music preferences). I guess you could call me a music junkie, and I was raised by a parent who plays electric guitar. Went to college for fine arts, design, digital arts. I remember when the new wave bands first came out – still have the debut Cars album on vinyl, and I didn’t mind the Police’s early stuff. Really liked the Talking Heads – David Byrne was ahead of his time ["same as it ever was"]. Working at the music publication was really cool – a lot of great perks like concert gig passes, etc., met a lot of interesting people there from all facets of the entertainment industry (club owners, photographers, music critics, etc). Forgot to mention also that I am a NIN fan, but again, music is such a broad range that you could talk for hours on end about it. Likewise, I’ll keep my eye out for you. Best of luck with your music; hope it works out well.

PS – The Pixies – one of Nirvana’s influences :)

Dear 4th | 7/30/2007, 12:53 am EST

It’s funny that you mentioned that your visiual artist/designer. I’ve got a terrific idea for a line of T-shirts. I hired a tatoo artist to draw the concepts I came up with. He’s dragging his ass and nothing’s getting done. I have a got a good feeling if my ideas were fleshed out (I can’t draw my way out of a paper bag) that it could be a financial windfall! Would definetly value your opinions on the subject. Peace, Rockbutterfly *I dig NIN myself, but I think Marilyn Manson is a talentless douche bag!

4th Dimension | 7/30/2007, 4:10 am EST

Rockbutterfly,
That kind of sucks that your artist is dragging their butt…I’ll post a few suggestions tomorrow evening here at the Bollocks BLOG to perhaps guide you in the right direction for your t-shirt designs (let me think on that)…Regarding Marilyn Manson, I don’t like his music very much myself, however, he must be a brilliant businessman – he really knew his target market (with the shock-rock-thing done so many times before). By contrast, I think that Trent Reznor is genuinely quite innovative.

4th d | 7/31/2007, 12:45 am EST

Rockbutterfly,

I’ll do my best to offer a few suggestions regarding your t-shirt artwork. Firstly, you might need to find another reliable artist or design company. Check their portfolio & ask them for their client references; get a quote and a contract agreement in place. The artist should provide you with some initial drawings, then once a design is nailed and approved by you, the artwork is taken to the next level by that artist (to final vectorized artwork format). Most t-shirt printers will accept Adobe Illustrator files. You should be able to find a good designer, under business directory listings. Not sure what the scenario is with the designer you hired (perhaps a referral from somebody else?). Hope that the advice is of some help.

On another note, speaking about Led Zep, I met Jimmy Page very briefly a long time ago. Nothing to get too excited about; he was hanging out in a local club while in town recording (must have been 10-15 years ago). He had security around his table, which is expected, but he was nice and didn’t seem to mind giving out autographs.

Peace ~ SC

Dear 4th | 7/31/2007, 2:07 am EST

Thanks for your suggestions. I’m from NYC but I am temporarily stuck in a shithole place called Cleveland,TN. That’s right. Someone decided to name another place after Cleveland Ohio (which not too long ago was referred to as the “Asshole of United States”) Yeah, I’m living in a place named after THAT PLACE. Due to family concerns I will be here indefinitely. I just got your post, so I was not able to look into it. But if what I’ve seen of this place is any indication, I would have to say that my options finding a good designer are probably very limited. Making matters worse, is my idea is topical. It has something to with the upcoming Presidential elections. They’re getting closer by the minute, so this whole project is time sensitive! …By the way I got to spend an Easter Sunday with Keith Richards back in ‘96. The Coolest! A genius (not like the charicature (spelled that wrong) the media likes to paint him as). Talk to ya soon, Rock

4th Dimension | 7/31/2007, 12:57 pm EST

Rockbutterfly,
I’m on the west coast (pacific northwest – near grungeland). If you are limited in your options for finding a good designer, I’ll send you another post tonight – run my own design business, but will figure out a way without soliciting on the RS web site, for you to get in touch with my business. If I can’t be of help, I’m in touch with a lot of good pro designers I could refer you to if your project is time-senstive. (I have no idea how any of us managed before without the internet – clients range from frisco to nyc). Very cool that you spent time w/Keith Richards. A friend of a friend who met him told me that he has an amazing energy about him in person. Will send another post tonight.

Rockbutterfly,

Some t-shirt design solutions can be found at craigslist dot org under the services/creative listings. Some great designers are located in west “hollywood north”, just over the USA border.
(you remember the Xfiles, Bryan Adams, Micheal J. Fox)

{{{ and what ever did happen to The Cars anyway? }}}

Forgot to mention that I like some of John Lennon’s solo work.
Thanks for the mention of Led Zep…I wound up digging up some of my Zep cd’s, and they sound just as good as ever. Have not played them in a while. Zep makes some of today’s bands sound like pansies.

Peace ~ SC
