Metallica’s New Album: “Ridiculous,” “Sick,” “Bitchin’” Says Matt Sorum

7/25/07, 4:35 pm EST

Photo: MetallicaMetallica are hard at work on their next album with producer Rick Rubin, and at least one person outside the band has heard the songs: Velvet Revolver drummer Matt Sorum. We’ll let him take it from here: “Lars is a good friend of mine. He played me the demos from San Francisco, and I turned and looked at him and I said, ‘Master that shit and put it out.’ It’s ridiculous. The demos were sick. Eight-minute songs, all these tempo changes, crazy fast. It’s like, ‘Dude, don’t get slower when you get older, but don’t get faster!? How are you gonna play this live?’ And then me and Lars were out partying all night, and he had to go in the studio the next day and do this stupid like nine or ten minute song, and I was laughing at him — because he played me the demo of it, and it was [sings really fast drum part], so fast. I called him, and said, ‘Dude, how are you feeling?’ He was like, ‘Dude, I’m hurting.’ They’re cutting everything to tape, no fuckin’ Pro Tools — live, no clicks. Bitchin’. I dig it. I’m really excited for them.”

big big MetAllicA the best band in my life I had a good memorial from metallica when I was young so the new album is the best news I could hear.

Metallica-God | 8/24/2008, 3:56 pm EST

I would just like to say to all of you ppl who think metallica is out of date and cant play and suck and this and that. For one metal would of never have turned out if it wasnt for metallica’s skill not only on thr guitar, drums, bass, and vocals they dedicated there life to music and to the fans, and bring the fans a new sound every album yeah they may have had there down fall, but damn u have to give metallica all the respect they deserve becuz its risky tryn to change sound to make it better, so all u metal lovers out there who put down metallica becuz of there passed and one bad album “saint anger”, just look at all the metal bands u listen to and think to urself would u be listening to ur favorite bands like mine which are godsmack and metallica 95% of u will most likely say no. so stop putting metallica down and give the gods of metal and rock and roll the respect they deserve.

REEK go home your mama is calling you time to nurse.

Reek | 6/13/2008, 1:11 pm EST

Metallica are substance abuse users who go to rehab to try and get their issues fixed….just look at James. Why on earth would I support a band who became millionaires from mine and other fan’s money then abuse that on alcohol and drugs. I’ll d/l their albums from now on thank you. I work hard for my money you know Metallica.

As an old school fan of Metallica, I’m giving this album the benefit of the doubt simply because Bob Rock has nothing to do with it.

I hold Bob Rock responsible for ruining one of my favorite bands of all time. I’ve been quite impressed with Rick Rubin’s portfolio over the past 20 years, and I’m hoping he’ll have the same kind of overall effect he had on RHCP when they made Blood Sugar Sex Magic.

There is still hope.

one thing on all albums after the black album. if any other band put out an album like load they would be signed instantly and be sucessful. it is because they are metallica and you want an album identical to master of puppets or ride the lightning which are the two most important albums in the entire metal genre. metallica has been my favorite band since i was eight. i saw them live at nine during the master of puppets tour and have not missed any of their tours since. they are the best band ever no doubt

Can’t wait for new Metallica album, it is gonna be awesome. In response to Anon, how is Sad but True from the Black Album hard alternative? It is probably the hardest metal riff of all time just ahead of Symphony of Destruction. The Black Album is harder than your beloved Death Metal (exception of Nothing Else Matters and The Unforgiven) and I would like to see you improve on perfection like these guys have been trying to do since Master of Puppets.

In a recent interview with Virginia Fuel, MetClub’s Virginia’s local chapter, Lars Ulrich’s long-time assistant, Steve Wiig, revealed some new details about the album’s sound:

“ I hear it all of the time. I can’t get away from it. I’m usually in or around the studio with them. There’s some fast stuff, heavy stuff, slow stuff. There’s some stuff on there that sounds a little bit closer to the “Fade to Black” / “Welcome Home (Sanitarium)” / “One (Metallica song)”-style. the clean riff thing, a great melody. Verse stuff with the heavy chorus and the ending blows the shit out of the roof. It’s cool to hear them doing that kind of thing again.

im fed up with people winging bout metallica’s albums being metal or more non metal, or saying their bunch of sell outs. i mean christ give em a break. the reason i even started listening to metal in the first place is cuz of enter sandman. i bought ‘puppets’ and ‘lightening’ and ‘kill em all’ the same week and hated them. it seems stupid now as i like those more thrashy albums more than anything (fade to black rules!). but as metallica has evolved (yes evolving is wat good bands do!) i love them even more, even load and reload. if anything these albums turned me on to other hard rock and country styles of music i would of othewise blindly missed. and dont try n tell me load and reload arent metal cuz most the songs on em r heavier than early black sabbath stuff (which i also love so dont moan about my comparison)and their as you well know the fathers of metal!
basically wat im saying is, give the metallica guys a chance. i did and it has changed my taste in music forever. long live metallica, looking forward to the new album!

AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, READ THIS YOUR VERY SOULS DEPEND ON IT, IF YOU THINK THERE SELL OUTS WHY DO YOU CARE ENOUGH TO TELL US? I DONT LIKE PANIC AT THE DISCO, THE KOOKS, THE HIVES, MY CHEMICLE ROMANCE, AVENGED SEVEN FOLD, AND MANY MANY MORE; BUT I DONT GO AROUND SHITTING A BUNCH OF LIES ON ANY SITE THAT MENTIONS THEM DO I YOU UNREASONABLE DICKS. what i mean to say you agument is missenformed now go suck a tail pipe or chew on a shotgun or something just die! …thats a little harsh in retrospect… all i want is to see you cut in half in front of your children… damn it i did it again.

It is a mistake to say that the Black Album wasn’t metal. It wasn’t thrash, that’s obvious, but it as metal. Load, and reload weren’t metal. St. Anger was, but it was terrible. This album, from all I’ve heard, is gonna be good. And no, record sales is not what they’re all about. If that were true, they’d have put out more then one studio record so far this millennium.

Anon | 2/26/2008, 4:47 pm EST

There is a big difference between musical progression. Listen to Lamb of God’s “New American Gospel” and then “Sacrament.” That is musical progression. They stayed true to their roots, and stayed metal. Yet, the albums obviously are different, with “New American Gospel” has more of a death metal feel, but “Sacrament” has very noticeable groove metal influences. But listen to “Kill ‘Em All” and then listen to the Black Album. Big difference. The Black Album was not metal. It wasn’t bad music. It just wasn’t metal, it was alternative rock. St. Anger was not metal, it was alternative rock. After some kind of monster, it is very easy to see that music does not matter to them, but record sales do. Look at what they did when the passed law against downloading. You can like Metallica all you want, it is good music, but with the exception of the first four albums, they should not be in the metal section at the music store.

jlee | 2/25/2008, 7:42 pm EST

I’m so tired if hearing that metallica sold out..what r u talking about sell outs if people like the music and the band/singer makes a living whats the fucking problem so what their shit sounds different as they grow older i mean its all decided on opinion anyways right whether you like them or not what constitutes selling out,how do you decide that there are no written rules for it.Music is music metal, rock, pop or whatever if you feel it and it sounds good whats the big fucking deal.

Brian Kenny | 2/25/2008, 5:15 pm EST

This new album is a pile. Its not about a “formula” its about it being GOOD OR BAD. This is BAD. BAD music with no soul. If you think this is in some way original you are missing the 1000 other bands who have already done a much better version of this album. What a waste of time. You little robots will love it if it’s farts smell like metallica. You are all losers.

metal-tom | 2/25/2008, 11:46 am EST

can i just say that everyone of you bitching about metallica…it’s old..will you not just let the ones who still like the band enjoy the band i mean, no group should have to stick to one formula for writing music because you r anyone says so. i fully support progression in music as its whats keeping me interested in music. i used to listen to slayer. these days after about three years of listening to them i can’t stand them. why? simple they have not progressed. they think that by releasing the same album over and over under different names that they can get away with it. metallica don’t do this. they may not always be masterpieces but they are strivein to find an even better sound. also for all yo saying how big sell-outs they are, ask yourself this if you were offered to be in their position. you would take it. too right you would so. dont bother bitching say something positive or just think it to yourself because every metallica fan around is sick and tired of it.

James Hetfiled doesn’t have his voise like he had in 1986 to the mid 90’s, and his voise isn’t so dynamic and energized like its were back in time, now its sounds like a teen going through his pubberty, when his going high his voise break, but old fans doesn’t care about such things because they are super fans, Metallica doesn’t fit new people because of that.. Metallica is a very cool band and they have made many great tracks but I dont think they will make an album like Master Of Puppets, Metallica have had their big chance and time and that was in 80’s and 90’s and band cannot have the same enegy and power through out the band’s lifetime, else it would be something new and godly.. but im a fan of metallica and doesn’t care about james live voise, his long beared or cuttet hair and thier sometimes guitar faliures.. longlive Metallica and goodluck to the new album hope it will going to be nice :)

Aaron | 2/23/2008, 11:00 pm EST

People can argue tht they are sellouts and are not just about the music, but just listen to the music and dont look at the people. The black album was a turning point for metallica. That doesn’t mean that they can’t make another great album. So for all your people who have just given up on them… QUIT LEAVING COMMENTS ABOUT THEM!!! I myself am very excited about this album.

New Metallica CD Demo is leake | 2/21/2008, 10:32 pm EST

Well, it has emerged from the center of the Earth.

Metallica’s raw demo of their new CD leaked out on a German web site for what seemed like less than one day.

However, I was able to download and uncompress the files and I must say I was blown away. Hands down a genuine metal effort. Rick Rubin is a genius at producing and resurrecting careers.

Metallica is reborn and I mean that with every vein in my body. The sound is genuine old school Metallica. Throw in a little Pantera’s Cowboys from Hell with In Justice for All and there you have it. Furthermore, I must say to all of you @$$holes out there who have been blogging and chatting on the internet you can kiss my metal @$$. If that is the best argument you have for Metallica’s low years then you can just go listen to Cher. Metallica still can thrash with all the young pups. Show them some respect. And I will bet a C-note that it will be the biggest CD of 08’.

Regards,

Music for Life

anon | 2/21/2008, 7:46 pm EST

Metallica are sell outs. Anything out after ride the lightning sucks, and is not metal, just hard alternative. METALLICA IS NOT METAL. Todays real thrash comes from Mastodon, Lamb of God, and Megadeth. After Some Kind Of Monster, how could anyone even consider that metal. Kirk Hammet is a cruddy guitarist, so metallica fanboys can quit getting all orgasmic about his suckfest of strumming. If you want to hear great guitars listen to Children of Bodom, Arch Enemy, Black Label Society, or Firewind. James Hetfield is insecure and is to blame for Kicking out Dave Mustaine, and all anger within the band. He is responsible for the Black album, which is the complete turning point for metallica, when they became soft and not metal. You can like it all you want, but it should be classified under hard alternative, because this is NOT METAL!

s0ulfree | 2/21/2008, 6:20 am EST

Alright, i consider myself as one of the biggest fans of metallica. Like most of u i also think their first 4 albums are still some of the best music u’ll ever find. The Black album was their turning point, they matured as a band and decided to try something new.If thay didnt do this all you assholes would be complaining that they are fucking predictable.Load & Reload were transitinal albums of yet another turn in their maturity.i personally liked it. It was a breath of fresh air.I also thought Garage and S&M were creative genius.innovation and evolution at its best.St. Anger was a bit of a surprise. It was like having a glass of water when i wanted to get totally wasted. All you morons should stop with this sell out crap, wake the fuck up and look around you, this is called survival, which all of us strive for. True fans should stick with their fav bands and stop giving advise about which direction they should choose.I f you have given up on metallica, stop bitchin and posting comments about them. Let the numbers of the copies sold of the new album decide. Metallica rulzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Ritchie | 2/21/2008, 3:24 am EST

Metallica is not to be fixed, there is nothing to fix. Metallica is making music that they like. People who see Metallica as a Master of Puppets band could be very disapointed! I will take Metallica for whatever they are, and whatever they make! I must say though, if the album’s final mixing, sounds like St. Anger, it is going to take me some time to get used to. After listening to St. Anger a couple of times you start seeing the hard and cool things of the album. Bob isn’t a loser, the mixing was just wrong. Biggest problem? Too loud bass&drums, and the snaredrum was too tight.

Hope Metallica kicks ass again, can’t wait for their new Golden Record! :)

Anonymous | 2/20/2008, 12:19 am EST

Why the hell are some bloggers knocking The Black Album? Okay, Bob Rock screwed things up when it comes to Load (not bad), Re-Load (which, despite Metallica being my favorite band in the galaxy is their worst album in my opinion), St. Anger (good but not great) but I’m sick and tired of former fans saying that Metallica are nothing but a bunch of washed up retards. FUCK ALL OF YOU!!! In my opinion the only person in heavy metal that is all washed up is none other than Axl Rose of what supposedly is Guns N’ Roses (working on that so-called “Chinese Democracy” album that was suppose to of come out when- ten, maybe fifteen years ago? and yet I never ran into anyone who has said shit about him. METALLICA FUCKING RULES!!!! HANDS DOWN!!!!

Move ON!!!!!! | 2/16/2008, 1:02 am EST

I am eagerly awaiting the release of Metallica’s next album…Why wouldn’t I? They were my entry point into metal so they deserve at least some of my attention. The question is, what am I expecting? With the addition of a great bass player (check out his work on Suicidal and Infectious) and assuming that the the final mix will allow his bass work to shine (hear the opposite of this on just about every Metallica studio release to date excluding Garage Days) I am hopeful of some sonic splendour. However, James Hetfield has not written a great metal song since the Black album. Post Black, I find Metallica’s riff work to be cheesy, cornball, unmemorable, almost riff for the sake of a riff. Having checked out “new song” and “the other new song” (assuming that these will be part of the new album in some way, or at least reflect current riff work) I can’t really see any improvement. The songs/riffs do not provide or invoke any real feeling. “New song” started off well, then it was game over. “The other new song” that fell in a heap from the start.

I love metal and I really want Metallica to blow me away. I don’t think they can anymore. With so much top grade metal to choose from now, I moved on years ago. To all the Metallica posters out there, fans, the hopeful….I say: “Move ON.” Go and lend your support to bands out there that need it and deserve it. There is an absolute smörgåsbord of Eurpoean metal bands out there that make Metallica sound like Weezer. There are bands out there that strike fear, sadness, anger, horror into you. There are currently two American acts out there that you Yanks should be driving your support behind, Nevermore and Lamb of God. Check out there work, it speaks volumes.

Why am I bothering to post about Metallica if I feel this way? My entry paragraph explains. Metallica released four metal albums which have changed the world. A part of me hopes there may be a fifth but the road since Black suggests there will not be….

Jerko666 | 2/14/2008, 10:41 pm EST

If James till cant growl its gonna suck i dont give a rats ass how fast or heavy the music is. As long as he sounds like he’s a teen going through puberty with his voice cracking it will be bad. They said in 2003 they were going back metal and look what happened. I really don’t care about this band anymore, i’ve moved on to newer better bands, even some old ones who still have it like slayer, testament and kreator. Oh well i’m sure they’ll polish a turd and turn it to gold for all the desperate fans out there. Metallican’t.:D Listen to James say Frantic tic tock tic tock and tell me how you can take them seriously anymore. Later.

I would like to add my 2 cents about Metallica. I have listened to them since 1986. There music has always told the story of what i feel and / or percive in society. I identify with them on every level. When the black album came out i was with everyone saying they sold out, But I identified with the songs, Being only 15 at the time they descibed my emotions and rage. So good for them, they made some money. Now im 33 and excited for there new album, which is supposed to be ANGRY again. Im angry again. Oh and by the way I sold out to corporate america, cut my hair got a freakin job and quit doing drugs. But my kids live well.

diana | 2/13/2008, 9:56 am EST

i don’t care what everyone says about selling out or whatever. Fucking Metallica kicks everyone else’s ass. The first four were the best, and of course a lot of people weren’t happy with what came after, but so what? I, for one, am counting down the days until the release. Fuck all you haters.

white sands | 2/12/2008, 11:39 am EST

all of metallicas music is better than the mainstream stuff now so dont moan and theyre almost 50, its hard to be as good as you used to be and i dont think anyone here is in a band thats ever gonna be as big as them…

Teh Master of Puppets | 2/10/2008, 11:32 am EST

Alright guys, start lightening up, what the fuck is with this sellout shit. Its total goat fudge, seriously, what makes you think, you have the write to shoot your mouth off at your once favourite band all because they made a few albums that didn’t put a smile on our face, Load and ReLoad were pretty good, St. Anger had some good songs. But to whine about selling out???? you are in over your head kiddos. Tell me how would you feel if you found out about your biggest fan using a free download system causing half your sales to drop. Metallica has never been one to complain about money, but they will know people who do, explain how they are supposed to fund for their next album dickwaffle. there is a possibility it could be their last album, but if no ones satisfied, its back to the drawing board. Overall Metallica is and always will be the greatest band to ever pick up an instrument (microphone included) not Led Zeppelin, not Iron Maiden, not anybody

P.S. For the record: Go ride a chode Maddox

MetallicaISgod | 2/9/2008, 4:40 am EST

Its funny that so many people call Metallica sell outs. They only thing they have ever sold out were box office tickets. All of these underground geeks really need to understand that just because something goes mainstream, does’t mean its bad. Just because you can’t wear the t-shirt and pretend you are the universal diety of this little puppy band doesn’t mean you can’t love were there putting out. Metallica is bigger than underground & mainstream. All these so called music lovers should embrace the fact that without Metallica there would be no Thrash Metal. If there was no Thrash. You would have to say goodbye to black, death, grunge, hardcore etc. Metallica is considered to be one of the 4 horsemen of Metal. The only band that should be considered the true sell outs of rock are KISS. When is the last time you saw James Hetfield singing disco? Please just stop with all the napster and Black album hating. Just because Metallica decided to grow up, doesn’t mean there sell outs. They stayed true to themselves. They symbolize more than your parents basement and your little Kia rio. Metallica has transended into a vital force of American Living. So Maddox, go suck a fat one…..

First of all, I would like to thank the 90% of posters who have such accurate spelling and grammar (for the slow that’s sarcasm). I’m sure that I, for one, will now smack my children in the face with a large dead fish from now on for every time they forget to end a sentence with a period.
Here’s the deal. Metallica can’t win. Assuming the point of view that they did NOT sell out, then you would have to assume that everything they did in the 90’s was the band following their hearts. So, therefore, if they put out another 1 hour + length epic that is meant to rival even “Master Of Puppets” it could be argued that they are selling out then. How is that so? Well, the #1 argument you hear about post ‘89 Metallica is that they gave into fads and trends and started making records that the unwashed masses wanted (this is selling out, really has nothing to do with money). Now you have a million old fuckers who can’t let go aching from their vaginas “OMG….THOSE FUCKEZ SUK…THEY SHUD STOP SUCKIN DIXORZ AND PUT OUT ANUTHER JUZTIS OR MATTER OF THE PUPETT RECERD…ROFLMOA” Now, this next record is supposed to be that missing link (I highly doubt it will) between Justice and the Black Album. Couldn’t it be argued then that Metallica is giving in to all of those E-tards, thus, making them even bigger sell outs by giving the fans what they want (well, some of the fans….as there are still some out there who think Load and Re-load was good…to each his own dude.)
Here’s the problem. Those that like the newer radio friendly Metallica are not gonna have the appreciation for another pre 90’s Metallica record. Even going back after all these years and listening to “AJFA”…I have to say it is very cold sounding and not radio friendly by any means. For those of us who grew up on the “we do it for ourselves and if you like it fine..if you dont FUCK YOU” era Metallica are going to be expecting another “AJFA” or “Master” and be possibly very disappointed. Either it will end up being another St. Anger with polished production (Face it…St. Anger had more problems then just production, lack of solos, or James’ flexible pitch) and the old fans will hate it, or it will be close to those old records but will also reek of fabrication of a band of old men trying to hard to go back to their roots to please a generation that has sense turned their backs on them.
I personally don’t want either. It’s painfully simple what we should really be hoping for. That would be for the band to do what they have done best. It would be best for them to make a record and “do it for ourselves and if you like it fine..if you don’t FUCK YOU”
If I hear the new shit I will know (as a veteran musician myself) the difference. That attitude is what made “Master of Puppets” work. Even “AJFA” had little hints of a band trying to hard to create. If I hear a record that just flows, that comes from the heart, with no hints of fabrication….it won’t matter what the material is. I will respect it.
Don’t be expecting Metallica to suddenly become 1980 something Metallica….these guys are all nearing 50 years old. It would almost be impossible.

Metalupyourass | 1/22/2008, 12:36 am EST

I think it’s pretty shity that all you f***ing posers out there think they suck just cause they dont play 1,000 notes a second. no leaf clover-Fan from iran | 1/18/2008, 2:05 am EST

hi.Metallica is the king and rules all over the metal.Their old album without no doubt are the best.and about st.anger…well,it’s not as good as old albums but who can forget Frantic or St.anger songs?heavy like hell!i still love metallica and my biggest wish is that one day this legends put a tour in iran.i promise you if this happens we will submit a new record in Guinnes book of records:
Biggest amount of fans came to watch a band live
By the way I miss jason so much.rob doesn’t look to be as good as jason.jason was dedicated to music.but rob just have funny movements on live performances and that not sounds good for metal music.it’s a shame!
what the f*ck is Mastadon?in comparison with metallica, mastadon looks like a kid who thinks he doesn’t need parents anymore but doesn’t know that where he learned walking and talking from!
STAY AWAY FROM METALLICA IF U DON’T LIKE’EM.SHOUT YOUR MOUTH AND DO NOT TALK ABOUT WHAT U DON’T KNOW.METALLICA IS THE HISTORY OF METAL AND INSANITY AND ALWAYS HITS THE SPOT!

jfeelwell | 1/17/2008, 1:40 pm EST

If rick rubin can do for metallica what he did for system of a down, than this record will rock. He has a way of structuring arrangments so that the songs are full of color. Every record I’ve heard that he has done sounds great, and you can tell that its a mature step for the band. Just listen to the guitar arrangments on stadium arcadium…the way the layers build and build and then explode into a simple chorus that hits you in the face. Or the way the drum arrangments are so complex yet simple and easy to follow. All the ingredients are there and I have a really good feeling about this record. And by the way, even though it was not my record of choice….. st. anger was fucking awesome because it showed that metallica could break any mold and not spend 6 months EQing a snare drum or 3 months trying to mic up a guitar cab. It was good for them to do that record. people are very selfish when it comes to bands…..they want to hear exactly what they want to hear and if they don’t - than “it sucks”. Try growing with the band instead of being selfish and stubborn. I’m 29 and i’ve been listening to Metallica since I was 7 years old, I’m gonna like this record, I know it.

licze, że ten album będzie niezły. Najbardziej się obawiam perkusji, ale nie dla tego, że nie lubie Larsa lecz tego, żeby w końcu dał niezłego CZADU…

cott | 12/16/2007, 6:58 pm EST

metallica started out wanting to destroy glam. they suceeded, Then in 1991 after glam was dead they stopped playing thrash. I think they stopped because there was no more motivation. Rick rubin wants metallica to get their hunger back but i know that that is impossible because there is no more glam bands out there anymore. when you set a goal (destroy glam) and you reach it….what do you do next?

METAL GODS METAL KINGS | 12/11/2007, 7:53 pm EST

alright, all those saying Mastadon is better than metallica or anything like that i have sumthin to say. Mastadon is a great band, but look at the 80s dude metal started to go pussy with shit like warrant and poison, if it werent for metallica all metal would be men dressed like women singing about heartbreak. So if it werent for Metallica there would be no Mastadon.

Metallica>>>>>>>m astadon

Jason | 12/10/2007, 9:31 pm EST

I started to listen to metallica about 5 years ago or so. I’m 19 now. Before them i listened to classic rock like queen, aerosmith, etc. Once I went out and bought the Black Album it turned me to metal. Then I went out and bought every single album they have made. I first liked their newer stuff but have since been listening to their older stuff like RTL, Justic, and Puppets. I will not download their music! For those that a curious, i also listen to Manson, Disturbed, Megadeth, G & R, Drowning Pool, Rob Zombie, etc. I will not listen to bands such as My Chemical Romance, AFI, Avenged Sevenfold, etc.

Metallica did not sellout, they did what humans do, and thats change, thus their music changed with them. They didnt let anyone else influence their music, thats what a real band should do, not by whats “hot.” They did however sellout…every concert that is. Thats why their Americas 6th largest entertainment attraction in history.

Metallica knows how to put out good music. Every other band uses a computer to “enhance” thier stuff and it still sounds like shit. Im going to buy their album the first day!

nullaboy | 12/3/2007, 5:53 am EST

METALLICA R THE KINGS!!!!Fullstop, exclamation mark etc etc etc.i must admit in my younger days i was a full blown metal(and punk)freak.u name it,seppy’s,slayer, exploited,pi stols blah blah blah, now i’m a little older i can see good music for wat it is,and not for the(f–k u i’ll listen to wat i want mum)attitude.
and the only band that i still listen to from back in the day is metallica, and thats because all the music that they have made kicks arse!from kill to anger there is something there for everyone.so u little f—-ts that dont know wat they r talking about, dont just hear the albums…….LISTEN FFS!

morbid angel, deicide, napalm death are still cool but vocals sound funny

zak | 11/15/2007, 11:37 am EST

Why don’t all these bitches quit whining and just listen to what they prefer instead of bashing bands? And to the idiots who comment on the members of metallica, the MUSIC kicks ass. it’s the MUSIC that matters. There varying music styles just show that they have skill and a wide repertoire of musical ability, unlike some bands who can only play one genre.

Mastodon is shit! METALLICA>MASTODON more like. Metallica are legends and Mastodon are metal-innovator wannabes. Mastodon mix so much crap in their music and think they’ll be credited with offering a lot. They were the real mess at the Wembley Stadium on July 8th. MACHINE HEAD kicked their asses n METALLICA ruled.

Ardvuck | 8/31/2007, 7:47 am EST

It would be interesting if they finally got 20/20 hindsight and put out a good album, something they haven’t done since In Justice For All. I have no interest in mainstream press acting like it has a clue about metal, with all the interesting things the genre has been producing going under the radar (like anything worth a damn), I am still fascinated by Metallica despite their awful last 3 frat rock albums 4th mid life crisis pinger. I believe the guys that penned down the brilliant Kill, Lightning, Master and Justice still have it in them cause well, they wrote those albums! Working with Rick Rubin and recording on tape will hopefully take the Hollywood/Gucci slippers/bottled Fiji water/AMERICAN CHOPPER-ized/boring element out of them bring them back to what its really about, banging your head and breaking a sweat! Then again, you can just watch that movie, who knew money could turn headbangers into housewives?

Hi all!

The day after CEO Steve Jobs trotted out new iMac computers, Apple Inc. issued an update for the machines that the company only vaguely identified as providing “important bug fixes.”

It also updated the beta of Boot Camp, the dual-boot application that lets iMacs run Windows XP or Vista on Intel-powered Apple hardware.

Owners of the day-old 20- and 24-in. iMacs should install iMac Software Update 1.0, Apple said in a terse message accompanying the 5.1MB download, but it didn’t spell out the exact fixes. Some users on various Apple-oriented message forums claimed that updated ATI video drivers were among the changes, but Apple did not respond when queried for details.

As is the norm after a hardware refresh, Apple also posted a new version of Boot Camp, the free-of-charge dual-boot utility that’s still officially in beta. Boot Camp 1.4, said the Apple site, includes updated video drivers — required to run Windows, rather than using the generic graphics driver on the new iMacs — as well as an improved driver installer. Version 1.4 also supports keyboard backlighting on MacBook Pro notebooks.

Another download is necessary to enable the new function keys — which call up Expose, control screen brightness and handle other chores — on the revamped keyboard included with the new iMacs. The keyboard update can be pulled from Apple using Mac OS X’s built-in software update command.

Bye

Will it be better? Will it be worse? Who knows. The way I see it, musical statements like AC/DC’s Back in Black, Metallica’s Puppets. Sabbath’s Paranoid- they are like Superbowl rings. Once you have one the rest is academic. How many “rings” does Slayer have? Sure they have a substantial fanbase; I like Slayer and many of the bands listed here. But how many of them have more than 0 or 1 album/cd that is overwhelming? I think that as far as metal goes, it comes down to Zep, Metallica, Sabbath; with a nod to significant contributors (the Buffalo Bills of music- went to the big game a lot but didn’t quite pull it off) Megadeth, Rob Z, Motorhead, etc. But one thing we can ALL agree on; I’d rather listen to the next Tallica/Slayer/Deth etc, CD than anything else that is hitting the charts (Rascal Sucts, Brittany, Rappy-Crap-G blah blah blech!)

Balsac the Jaws of Death | 8/2/2007, 2:31 pm EST

Um.
I noticed that a lot of people discuss Metallica topics on web sites everywhere. Sure, most of them come to talk about the varying degrees to which Hetfield and Lars and the music all suck, but man look at the numbers. It’s sort of confusing because, if Metallica sucks so unanimously and for (as some of you say) 20 years, why do millions and millions repeatedly voice their discontent?
The only logical conclusion is that you all loved Metallica at some point or still secretly do. I’ll have no gripes in saying that I love most of their work, minus the confusing Load-ReLoad era. St. Anger is too long, but everything else is sufficient, to me.

The black album and everything after was subpar at best. The shortened, repeated riffs work to play on the radio but that was not what they gave their core audience first. That’s why they lost much of the core audience. The term “sell out” refers to their continuing use of shorter, radio friendlier songs and the softening of their tough guy image. I saw them in ‘86 open for Ozzy with Cliff Muthafuckin’ Burton. It was electric. I saw them open for Metal Church after that with jason Newkid. There is no better live band and they are tight as hell. I happen to like most of their covers as well. They did sell out but now they have a chance to redeem themselves with their core audience. Guys like me. We’re still here, waiting. All you youngsters need to appreciate what you have here, a tremendous live act that still has it.

SMOKE 326 | 8/1/2007, 3:21 pm EST

I CAN TELL MOST OF YOU METALLICA BASHERS ARE YOUNG, OR ATLEAST REAL NIAVE.I’M SHURE YOU GUYS SIT THERE AND LISTEN ALL DAY AND NIGHT TO YOUR UNDERGROUND METAL, PROBABLY HATE YOUR PARENTS BECAUSE THEY DON’T UNDERSTAND YOU, ARE ANGRY AT METALLICA BECAUSE THEY CHANGED, BECAUSE , (IN YOUR FEEBLE OPINIONS) SOLD OUT. WELL PUT YOUR LITTLE PINNER JOINTS DOWN , AND LISTEN VERY CAREFULLY. METALLICA DIDN’T SELL OUT , THEY DIDN’T UP AND GO MAINSTREAM BECAUSE THEY WANTED TO, THE PUBLIC JUST SIMPLY STARTED TO LISTEN. ANY ARGUMENT YOU MIGHT HAVE AGAINST THAT FACT IS BASED OFF OF HOW MUCH YOU THINK THEY SUCK.PITTIFUL. IV’E BEEN PLAYIG MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS FOR 20 YEARS, MAINLY GUITAR, SO IF YOU WANNA TALK MUSICAL SUPERIORORITY, I KNOW MORE THAN YOU. METALLICA IS A BETTER MUSIC GROUP.I WAS PLAYING SLAYER WHEN I WAS 9, I GREW UP AND STARTED TO APPRECIATE BETTER MUSIC. DONT MIS UNDERSTAND ME, I LIKE SLAYER, MEGADETH, TESTAMENT, ANTHRAX, YOU NAME EM’ I HEARD THEM WAY BEFORE YOU.IN CLOSING MY ADVISE IS , IF YOUR GOING TO VOICE YOUR OPINION ABOUT THIS ISSUE ,AT LEAT KNOW WHAT YOUR TALKING ABOUT, AND HAVE THE EXPERIANCE TO BACK IT UP. GOOD DAY TO YOU.

Metallica Rules! | 7/31/2007, 10:29 am EST

Slayer, Megadeth, etc… these are perfect examples of ’80’s and ’90’s metal bands that are not “selling out” and sticking to their metal roots. They keep making the same boring, predictable, and shitty records. They simply cannot or refuse to mature personally or musically. Maybe they can tour with Poison or KISS next year.

permanent_nirvana | 7/31/2007, 9:39 am EST

Slayer rules????? Right. Thats why they are touring with Manson :)

Kharoofje | 7/31/2007, 6:50 am EST

People judging music by lists made by random people have no credibility.

MJ | 7/31/2007, 5:11 am EST

This is how the new Metallica album is being promoted? Fake Matt Sorum reviews in RS? I could write a book on how this very example is the reason rock’n'roll is dead. I fucking hate rock music right now. Wasn’t it so fitting how RS apologized for “St. Anger” last week by saying it was all about Hetfield purging his inner demons. I would love to fight James Hetfield. I’ll bet I could write the greatest metal album of the decade based on how easy and fast I made him bleed. What a pussy.

hello metall fans
well… my opinion is that metallica pulled out some of the best heavy metal albums ever … and now they’re living through those and becouse of the big expectation the new album we’ll sell out again… just for curiosity if not for quality but aniway mastodon CAN’T compare with metallica. And as i can see you talk ’bout your favourite bands … and so i want to recommend you to listen OPETH… great band \m/

underground | 7/30/2007, 5:48 pm EST

wow did someone just say metallica was the led zeppelin of the 90’s…they have had no where near the impact on the 90’s that zep had on the 70’s…such bands as guns and roses and nirvana have had a bigger impact on music then metallica and they weren’t around nearly as long…and dont say they were the godfathers of heavy metal because that was black sabath

Lazarus C. Kauffman | 7/30/2007, 2:43 pm EST

If you don’t like their music, that’s fine. Just go bitch about it to someone who cares to listen. Will this stupidity ever end?

Metallica is a great band and no one can honestly refute that. One album isn’t going to erase all that they built. Just because I can’t stand Elvis or the Beatles doesn’t negate the fact that those artists are legendary and very talented at what they did.

I lived in the Middle East for 8 years. They’ve heard of Madonnna, Michael Jackson, Nirvana and Metallica. They don’t know Mastodon or Slayer. Not to say those aren’t great bands too, but they really aren’t on the same par as Metallica.

Suck it.

You really are a REDNECK aren’t you? The black Album Innovative? Are you kidding me? They turned into mullet rock with that album. After that it just got worse and worse.Slayer has stayed true to their Original sound,Reign in Blood will always be a better album than Master of Puppets,Slayer will always be a better band PERIOD.But I really admire your undying dedication to Metallica You go on supporting them no matter how bad they suck.Go back to watching NASCAR and Blasting your Kid Rock CD’s and Tell your girlfriend I mean your sister I said hello.

Dyer's Eve | 7/30/2007, 12:58 pm EST

DOOM not so fast. You’re the one who posted that you “were in the scene when I was in diapers”. So what were you trying to prove? You’re not the only person who has been around the “scene” for a long time. Who made you the metal authority? So you’re looking for new and innovative music but yet you keep referencing Slayer who has basically released the same type of album for the past 15-years. What a hypocrite and you’re still even playing the sell-out card. Success does not equal sell-out. Metallica has been trying new and innovative things with their sound since the Black album - some good and some not so good but at least their not afraid to try versus basically releasing the same type of music LIKE SLAYER for their entire careers.

See what I mean - nothin’ but an immature fool. You can’t post a comment without trying to belittle anybody who shares a different opinion and you basically keep saying the same thing. It’s time to move on to people who have a brain. Keep on posting your closed-minded worthless trash.

DOOM, I thought you were out? See you’re a Metallica fan afterall. For the record you immature loser, the first Metallica show I saw was when they opened up for Ozzy back in ‘86 when they were touring for the Puppets album and yes Cliff was still alive.

Once again, their new album will debut #1 AGAIN, will sell millions of records AGAIN, and will sell-out every show when they tour AGAIN. There’s not a metal band today that wouldn’t give their first born to get a chance to open for Metallica. Your little metal bands like Mastadon will NEVER achieve this status. Like it or not Metallica is the biggest and most influential mainstream metal band of our generation and that will never change so get used to it.

Holy cow I can’t believe all the hate being spewed on this subject. Metallica is one of the biggest bands in rock history, like them or not. I’ve been along for the ride since Kill em All. I’m sure some of you punks posting all this garbage were not even born in ‘83, so I don’t even take you seriously. I personally did not care for St. Anger. Lars sounded like he was drumming in a broom closet, but lyrically speaking, it was some powerful shit. I am looking forward to the new CD, but Rick Rubin scares me as a producer. True he has a killer resume, but his latest project with Linkin Park is just horrific. I really thought that something co-produced by Rubin and Mike Shinoda would be a whole lot better than that. I love the idea of there being 8 and 10 minute songs. Justice had songs that long, and I think many TRUE Metallica fans would agree it is their finest and best produced album.

Demon Cleaner | 7/27/2007, 5:50 pm EST

Even if the Black album and everything after didn’t turn you off to Metallica, the way they bitched and moaned about illegal downloads should have been enough to sour the most die-hard Metallica fan. They took on the face of corporate greed, when in the beginning, they gave their shit away for free and encouraged song swapping. Too bad Bob Cock ruined James’ voice. Otherwise, St. Anger would have been a decent effort. Now everyone back to your regularly scheduled program.

Dyer's Eve | 7/27/2007, 10:23 am EST

Let’s get a few things straight - Metallica has been around for almost three-decades, not two and I keep hearing that they “sold-out” with the black album. If they sell a song to sell a Cadillac then you can call them a sell-out. I just don’t get that nonsense. The common thread that Metallica has always stuck to is that they DO NOT make music to please the masses - they make whatever the hell they want and if you happen to like it great, if not then get out of the way. Just because the Black album ended up being a cross-over album it doesn’t mean they sold out. What were the supposed to do - reject all of the fame, notariety, and money that came along with the mega-success of The Black album just so they would remain loyal to their hard-core fans? This is the type of success that rarely comes along for a band so of course they embraced it and you would too if you were in their shoes. They’ve always said that the music on the Black album was intended to be different from their previous work on purpose - they didn’t want to keep making the same type of music over and over. It just happened that during that time period it appealed to much larger audience than ever before. Ex-”old-school” Metallica fans got pissed because they were no longer the underground metal band that had a smaller core audience and now these fans had to “share” Metallica with people who listened to pop-rock bands like Bon Jovi.

To reinforce Metallica’s ever changing attitude towards their music, they changed their sound again for Load/ ReLoad and then again for St. Anger. As for St. Anger, that album was intended to be “release” for the band - not a platinum selling, meticulously produced studio album for people to rave about. Guess what, the upcoming album will probably sound quite different as well so get used to it. “Your Metallica” from 1986 is no longer considered a hard-core metal band by today’s standards and they seem to be okay with it and so are the true and loyal fans.

tj | 7/27/2007, 9:00 am EST

i have already posted once on this thread but i will post again. ok i have seen metallica live as well but seriously these guys are terrible. the lyrics are shocking (bad) and they are just corporate cock-rockers. i hate what they stand for and they sell music to people with very small brains - Beavis and Butthead if you will. they had a few good albums pre-black album but they are not inventive. so they try and get a new producer - rick rubin - producer of such new radio garbage as RHCP and linkin park - just crap rock - although i admit he has produced a couple of good records in the past. and i like how on this new record they do longer songs - do they think they are tool or something? to all of you metallica fans - keep chugging along with your tattoos and your greasy long hair and your all black clothing thinking these guys are awesome. keep buying their albums too! feed crap corporate music. PLEASE - do it for my enjoyment.

I am tired of people who say that early Metallica stuff (Kill em All, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, And Justice for All) is great while all the “newer” stuff, beginning with the Black Album, sucks. Just because the newer stuff doesn’t sound like the older stuff doesn’t mean it isn’t any good; it is just a different style. Early Metallica, in all its kick-ass thrash glory, was great; but so is their newer stuff.

The Black Album is EASILY one of the best hard rock albums of all time. When a band has been around as long as Metallica has, their sound is bound to change somewhat.

To the people who only like the earlier Metallica albums: Do you really expect a band who has been around for almost THIRTY years to put out the SAME ALBUM over and over?

Oddly enough, something Beck once said in an interview comes to mind. When asked why his albums are all so different from one-another, he answered by saying that Martin Scorsese can direct a variety of different types of movies and nobody cares. Why do people care so much when a band changes their style from album to album?

wilko | 7/27/2007, 2:10 am EST

St Anger was the best and heaviest thing to come along in years. it amazes me that so many Metallica fans didnt like it, what, not slick enough for you? Too corrosive and raw for you to handle? The arrangements were too daring? pussies

KYmetal | 7/27/2007, 12:53 am EST

Maybe if you were a teenager when Lightning, master or even Justice came out, you would understand how unbelievably powerful this band really is. This new metal is ok, but does not have the crunch or the definition metallica’s music has always had. Anger wasnt that great, but knowing the music they made in the past, im confident they can make a truly great album again.

Markus | 7/27/2007, 12:25 am EST

First, someone on this thread said Metallica were “the Beatles of metal,” and I think that about sums it up. The Beatles recorded some shitty music (“Revolution #9?!?), and so has Metallica. But you don’t judge a band by its worst music; you judge it by its best. And if you can argue with the impact or quality of “Kill ‘Em All,” “Ride the Lightning,” or “Master of Puppets,” you’re an idiot. (BTW, speaking of the Beatles/Metallica connection, if you haven’t checked out the cover band “Beatallica,” you should. If you’ve got a sense of humor, you’ll laugh.)

Second, while I’ll admit Metallica hasn’t done a truly great album in a couple of decades, that doesn’t mean they can’t or won’t. And yeah, maybe they “sold out,” but most fans can’t even agree on when. Some people gripe about the “Load/Reload” albums, but to me, if they sold out, it was with “Black Album” (slowing the tempos down so that Motley Crue and Whitesnake fans everywhere could wrap their heads around it).

Third, and I may be the only one with this opinion, but I think that “St. Anger” could have been a great album if they had fixed a few major flaws:
#1: Bob Rock is a hard rock producer, not a metal one; get Rick Rubin – problem solved.
#2: Bob Rock is a mediocre bassist (they should’ve waited on Robert Trujillo before recording the album).
#3: Whoever’s idea it was to restrict Kirk from soloing: bad idea.
#4: Whoever’s idea it was to make Lars sound like he was banging on pots and pans: bad idea.

As for the new album, will it “suck” or “rule”? Anybody’s guess, but I’m not counting them out yet. Wait to hear it before you start to flame ‘em. JMO.

Metallica at their best couldn’t hold a candle to Iron Maiden’s “Number of the Beast.” Period. –H2O

The Real Deal.. | 7/26/2007, 10:36 pm EST

Ya know, I think that everyone who says that Metallica is washed up. I think it comes down to that since they have been around for 20 some odd years means ur tired of hearing them or your into stupid emo shit! So this is what I think, u should shove your heads up yours asses so u don’t have to hear it! I’m sure you’ll be comfortable there. Metallica has been here for 2 decades and they’re goin to be here for another 2 decades and then some and they will continue change and grow and show why they will never be forgotten!

REYKING | 7/26/2007, 8:32 pm EST

I’m a METALLICA fan since ‘86 also, and I do agree that their last album wasnt very good. But what you dont seem to understand (hand of doom) is that this is band thats been hittin it for more than 20 years. I think before you were even born, and your passing judgement on an album thats not even out yet. who are theese idiots that your traing push. mastodon will never have the relevance that METALLICA has to this date. And I still think your a queer.

Clarkey | 7/26/2007, 8:20 pm EST

In response to that last comment, shut the hell up - stop living in the past you loser and embrace what Metallica is doing now. Admittedly I am a massive fan of all of the old stuff - pure gold - but the new stuff is fascinating. Fast paced hard to write and play and new, I admire Metallica for keeping on lifting the bar and trying something new. Keep up the good work I say, there will always be people who can’t look past the old stuff to appreciate change but real fans will be thankful for any out put.

HAND OF DOOM | 7/26/2007, 7:48 pm EST

(DYERS EVE)

I have seen Metallica live twice to be exact. Justice For All Tour and the Black Tour great shows! I believe every band has a time and place and they also have an expiration look at the beastie boys they need to give it up also.Metallica will never be as good as they were thats a fact.Everybody can hold on and hope this album will be like (lighting) our (master) but its not going to happen. They have worn out their welcome.Go pick up the new Neurosis album BRUTAL!

Mother Theresa | 7/26/2007, 7:33 pm EST

This is the funniest goddamn comment thread ever! Who gives a flying fuck about Metallica and how much they rule or suck or whatever!?
Plese get your priorities straight.
Lindsay Lohan just got popped for her second DUI and this time she had some Columbian bam bam on her as well.
Please say a prayer for Lindsay, because I fear she is going to become a washed up crack whore, blowing middle aged pervs in the park for $5 very soon.

Hey PT, just a thought... | 7/26/2007, 7:22 pm EST

The original inventors of Rock and Roll are STILL out there; doing it. Jerry Lee, Little Richard,Chuck Berry, and if Elvis was still alive, he’d playing Vegas; Tom Jones, an adequate carbon copy, is still going. As far as I’m concerned since THEY invented it; THEY set the rules! People go to see the Stones ’cause they rock better than anyone else. Rock and roll is an attitude. If you play like you’re twenty, you ARE twenty. Peace, Rockbutterfly.

I get the "St. Anger" | 7/26/2007, 6:57 pm EST

thing, but I think they would’ve been much beter served if they got their frustrations out by making a Garage Days Re-Re-Re- Visited. They could’ve blown off steam and made a much better sounding album. Just my opinion, I could be wrong! –Rock B

“Nice! My boys are back again and I love to hear all of the Metallica haters bitch and moan about how old they are, they’re past their prime, their hair is still too short, and still even referencing Napster. It’s also funny how many idiots out there still believe that St. Anger was a focussed studio album and keep using that as another excuse to bash them. Like James said it was simply a purge of all the shit they’ve been dealing with the past 10-years. True Metallica fans picked that up right away and didn’t take that album too seriously. Doesn’t anybody have anything new to complain about? Like usual, their new album will debut #1 AGAIN, will sell millions of records AGAIN, and will sell-out every show when they tour AGAIN. Maybe putrid metal bands like Mastadon can open for them - nah, they’re not worthy. There’s not a metal band today that wouldn’t give their first born to get a chance to open for Metallica. They know if they do get the chance their popularity will skyrocket because they’re opening for the KINGS of metal. Like it or not Metallica is the biggest and most influential mainstream metal band of our generation and that will never change so get used to it.”

Doom - if you haven’t lately, go check out a Metallica show. I think you’ll be surprized of how much of their old shit they play live. The last time I saw them (2003) I think, they played for 2.5 hours and only played a handful of songs from Load until now. They really didn’t play much from the Black album. Nice and loud with a fairy simple stage with some cool pyro at the right moments. The pyro and artillery blasts before One will make you cover your ears.

Cheers,

I was with Matt and Lars listening to the demos of the latest Metallica…whilst doing loads of dope from a cock shaped bong, and I must say they scared me silly. That music is so loud and agressive, I almost peed myself.
I had to calm my nerves by blowing both Matt and Lars at the same time, while they gave me a nice tug job.
I don’t know much about Metal, other than most of those guys smell, but if Matt says it rocks, who am I to argue…cuz he’s yummy!

Hand of Doom | 7/26/2007, 5:01 pm EST

Metallica is the best fuckin metal band of all time.

Now excuse me while I go listen to my Kid Rock, Panic At The Disco, Lincoln Park and Pappa Roach cd’s, dammit!

Moimême | 7/26/2007, 4:47 pm EST

I`m a Metallica fan since early 86 and I still found that Load and Reload are good albums. All that sell out crap is really stupid and infantile. Musicians grow up and so does their music. Believe me, a quest for Puppets or Justice over and over again would have been very boring. You can’t play like that all your life, it was great and it was the best Metallica, but life goes on. I don’t know if the new album will be great, but at least it has new people in it (Rob/Rick Rubin). I’ll give it a chance, every work by Metallica deserves it.

Little Billy | 7/26/2007, 4:36 pm EST

I like metalica a lot! they play the really heavy music that make me jump up and down and go crazy! My mommy allow me to see them in concert with my older brother and they be so loud and crazy! I bang my head to the metal! Metalica is the bestest band ever. I am their number # 1 fan!

And go suck the monkey’s big fat hairy infested phallic appendage. As Metallica is an influence to many and rightfully deserve there place in music history. Dimebag was a KISS fan and look at the shit he turned out, you dick wade punks should be grateful that the bands such as Mastadon, All that remains, Trivium etc…base there influence on bands like Metallica. take some time to grow up and stop playing with your cock.

TO HAND OF DOOM — (really ORIGINAL name, numbnuts)

Go back to playing with your self while you smoke bong hit after bong hit, you brain dead imbicile!! Mastadon hasn’t sold as many albums COMBINED as Metallica has with just one album. Why? Because no one, outside of stoned out dipshits such as yourself, can understand the generic (as in every “death or black metal” band does them now) cookie monster screaming of unintelligible vocals over music that most chimps can play if you put musical instruments into their hands.

Rubin kicks ASS, and the old style, Master of Puppets type music that Met is now doing will ,make not only you and your little boyfriends eyes bleed, but will also make those talentless pussies Mastadon irrelevant for good.

Jackass!!

Master of Vomit | 7/26/2007, 4:20 pm EST

I agree with Hand of Doom. Metallica is no longer relevent. Their days of glory are long gone. Of course the younger fan base out there who have just recently discovered Metallica or only been listening to them for a couple of years will consider Metallica a kick ass band today, but the older fan base (like me) yearn for their older thrash, speed metal style where commerciality and popularity was not an issue for them. It was over for them once “Load” came out.

In my opinion, “Ride The Lightning” is their best album which influenced many of the death/speed/thrash bands to come. This was their last album on an independent record label, Megaforce, before signing to a major.

Hand of Doom | 7/26/2007, 4:13 pm EST

Maybe they can get Dave Mustaine back and kill with the vaunted ‘triple guitar’ line up. Metallica hasn’t produced a quality record since bob cock took over and now that rick rubin is on board, it’ll smash. rubin produced one of the best metal rcords ever, none other that slayer’s reign in blood. 29 minutes of pure hell. you diaper wearing wannabe knuckleheads should ask your probation officers, er, parents for $20 to buy the disc. Or steal a cc and download it. And when metallica comes back, stya out of my way. I’ll be the drunk, gray haired crazy fucker that’s your worst nightmare. I COME TO TAKE YOUR LIFE!!

Hand of Doom is Queer | 7/26/2007, 2:37 pm EST

This message is for Hand of Doom. First off, you suck. Learn to spell,… Leviathan. Second, Metallica is/was the base of a lot metal you hear today. Especially Mastodon. Go get some real shit to listen to you pansy.

Moimême | 7/26/2007, 2:29 pm EST

Metallica is the greatest band of all time and they are still rockin’, recording and touring. And by the way…they NEVER stoped! No break-up, no farewell tour, no stupid reunions…They’ve been arround all the time. That is called talent, effort, guts and of course, integrity.
They will not go away.

Dyer's Eve | 7/26/2007, 2:05 pm EST

I actually read something not too long ago that Mastadon was heavily influenced by Metallica - isn’t that ironic? Then again what metal band isn’t? Metallica is in their own league so idiots that try to compare them to today’s barking and buzzy metal groups are wasting your time. They all follow Metallica’s blueprint one way or another. Wouldn’t it be great if Mastadon opened up for Metallica next year?

Hand of Doom | 7/26/2007, 1:39 pm EST

First off METALLICA BLOWS!!!! All you posers out there that don’t know jackshit about music need to SHUT THE FUCK UP!!! Mastodon is the most original band to hit the metal scene in years!!Intricate Jazz drumming over their punishing grindcore sound,Couple that with cool concept album imagery and they are unstoppable!! have any of you even listened to BLOOD MOUNTAIN Or LEVITHAN?MOST Of you on here are a bunch of IDIOTS who probably think KID ROCK makes GOOD music!

You want metal Check out Mastodon,Boris,High on fire.

Chuck | 7/26/2007, 12:52 pm EST

Someone on here said “you need to focus on bands that are in their prime or up and coming not Metllica.” Word for word, that is EXACTLY what is wrong with the music industry today, jackass. The next fad, the next big thing, here today gone tomorrow. Bullshit. You want that, go listen to Fall Out Boy. The good artists are the ones that last, whether playing still or not. DAMN I hate some of you people…

Dyer's Eve | 7/26/2007, 12:51 pm EST

Bobnotrop - Going down hill since Jason left? Newstaed is probably the worst rock/ metal bassist I’ve ever heard. The only reason he was chosen to be in the band is because they were in the middle of the Master of Puppets tour when Cliff died. He’s lucky to have lasted that long. I wish Trujillo the new bassist was chosen after Cliff died - he plays a lot like Cliff actually. Basically Metallica haven’t, or never will be the same without Cliff Burton. Next to James, Cliff was the only person in the band that heavily influenced their music. This is why Ride the Lightning, Master, and Justice are all classic “blueprint” metal albums and even better than Kill ‘em All when Cliff wasn’t in the band yet. I can’t wait for their new album either but screw Newstead. Long live Cliff!

robmanq | 7/26/2007, 12:48 pm EST

When is the new album?
Is they still heavy metal like Scorpions, Twisted Sisters and Ratt? I like it very much when it is so loud.

I think I must kill him.
rock and roll all night and party all the day…yes!!!

finally a metallica album worth waiting for. I originally wanted jack white to produce this, because he seems to understand that overproduction is a bad thing, and traditional recording methods can really make the sound richer and fuller. Plus jack white has never shyed away from 8 minute guitar solos, he would encourage it. It would have been perfect too since jack was a metallica fan and metallica covered them a few years ago, which was great.

I’m glad that rick rubin took the route that i originally wanted. this is going to be fantastic.

I hope its released on vinyl.

Rick Rubin could make dog shit old man farts smell like fresh baked cookies.

Angel Of Night | 7/25/2007, 11:59 pm EST

Some of you people are fucked. Seriously. Metallica are not even all that old. After Load/Reload released, “which all of the songs were written at the same time by the way” then St Anger was a released. It sounded the way that it had because it was Bob Rock’s idea. As for James being the only hope left well, Kirk was the only one who wanted to stick to the old school ways and not follow what other bands were doing, James is the one who ultimately made St Anger shit. But it was purposely to sound garage production wise. 5 years ago punk rock was taking over, now heavy music is coming back and Metallica are by no means a classic rock band- as some of you dick bags claim. In their prime they were the kings and not even the good metal bands of today that are less main stream come close. This new album is going to kick ass. Not only are they giving it their all, but Bob Rock and his shit ideas are gone now, he was never even a fan of Metal, and now they are with Rick Rubin and have a killer bass player. (Bob rock played bass on St Anger, not Robert) You haters can eat a dick this winter when the album drops.

i think we can still have faith in james hetfield (the rest are all done) he always has been the heart and soul of metallica, if he take control, keep kirk away from lyrics, and focus on writing killer riffs and good lyrics, as he used to, we can expect a great metallica album, i think rubin can help him on that..

Jimmy Snuka | 7/25/2007, 9:08 pm EST

Matt Sorum is an excellent drummer but Metallica is a joke. Listen to the new stuff, there are plenty of festival clips on youtube… it sounds exactly like St. Anger, please, stop the hype. The only way metallica can redeem themselves, is if they start drinking, doing drugs, grow their hair and get devorced and we know this aint gunna happen. Sorum should be praising Chinese Democracy, the album he could have collaborated on if his head didnt get too big for his body.

Wow, there still might be hope for this band. No pro tools. I like the sound of that. Hopefully, no Bob Rock

marchoftheroses | 7/25/2007, 8:23 pm EST

since ‘bitchin’ is a dated adjective, i wont be taking into heed what matt s. believes the new album will deliver. i thought lars claimed to be a highly educated art brat, so i also wont be believeing the alleged conversation between them that was posted. so all in all, i will just have to wait to hear the album. although, i dont really expect a whole lot. im still trying to exercise the embarassment that was st. anus, i mean, anger.

Dio | 7/25/2007, 8:19 pm EST

Metallica should PRAISE ME! I…am…DIO!

Seth | 7/25/2007, 7:59 pm EST

haha Matt Sorum.

The new Metallica album will be worth checking out. It’ll be a lot better than The Black Parade part 2…

wtf dean? | 7/25/2007, 7:33 pm EST

are you kidding me? the black album?
*cough* and i quote:
“when the black album was out, it was very wierd, ’cause my sister, who usually listens to duran duran and that crap, wanted to borrow my metallica CD’s.” ta-da. not saying the ones before were bad they kicked ass, like ‘lightning’ and ‘justice for all’.

The Real | 7/25/2007, 7:26 pm EST

They suck. This album will suck, and is a poor ass excuse to revive another dead career.

njboss | 7/25/2007, 7:22 pm EST

metallica…who gives a flying rip…bunch of old, talentless farts…

idl3mind | 7/25/2007, 7:21 pm EST

I’m glad they are recording the old school way.

Dean | 7/25/2007, 7:18 pm EST

The singing is monotone.Nothing, but grunting. He needs an ex-lax.The band is severely overrated. The last decent cd was the Black album.

Other Dan | 7/25/2007, 6:28 pm EST

The saddest of all chords.

Maui Rob | 7/25/2007, 6:19 pm EST

Rick Rubin is shit-hot. He takes great musicians and forces them to create legendary music. He’ll do the same with Metallica. Dude.

subtle | 7/25/2007, 6:16 pm EST

NYC Nate nailed that one. Props for the perfectly executed mockery.

man | 7/25/2007, 6:13 pm EST

as long as rick rubin is producing, you know it cannot be bad

Dale Head | 7/25/2007, 6:11 pm EST

My lifestyle determines my death style.

mike | 7/25/2007, 5:59 pm EST

the last metallica album was like [makes really loud excriment noises], so bad!

mike | 7/25/2007, 5:56 pm EST

this is the same kind of crap people were saying before their last album came out, and it totally sucked…i hope they go back to their old style, but i’ll believe it when i hear it.

B. Breeg | 7/25/2007, 5:55 pm EST

New Metallica will rock. I can feel it.

Joe | 7/25/2007, 5:50 pm EST

Roger | 7/25/2007, 5:48 pm EST

They are too old grandpa’s to do a good thing again, just dumb sxxx.

SSLtech1 | 7/25/2007, 5:46 pm EST

viciousmidlifecrisis

Fecal Matter | 7/25/2007, 5:24 pm EST

Is Matt Sorum speaking English? Guy must not have went beyond a grammar school education.

crotchfunk | 7/25/2007, 5:21 pm EST

My dad owns a dealership bro!

Country Crotch | 7/25/2007, 5:18 pm EST

Matt Sorum sure knows how to kiss ass, doesn’t he? What did you expect him to say…..that the songs suck and they could do better? Sorum is good buddies with Lars. Of course he’s gonna say that the songs are “bitchin”.

Richard | 7/25/2007, 5:14 pm EST

I’ve heard the same things.

Master of Puppets and …And Justice are the templates for tempo and attitude, while the songs are somewhere between ..Lightning and the Black album.

Production by Rick Rubin?

Look out kids.

Stuporfly | 7/25/2007, 5:13 pm EST

I love it when 50-year old men try to talk like 15-year old boys.

pt | 7/25/2007, 5:12 pm EST

wow metallica…. they really need to hang things up, as do velvet revolver, as to “Guns N Roses”, as do Aerosmith, as do The Rolling Stones, as does Bob Dylan… Im tired of all of these classic rock acts who are way past their prime get a lot of attention from RS because they are supposidly creating music thats up to the level of their earlier output when all it ever turns out to be is crap, you need to focus on bands that are in their prime or up and coming not Metllica, if you want a good metal band listen to opeth or Mastodon.

Richard Legner | 7/25/2007, 5:10 pm EST

who cares…most over rated band (excluding obvious choices like Fall Out Ball, Hinder, My Chemical Romance etc) in ages.

That dude’s voice is SO annoying. I will run from my local record store when this comes out to escape the shit smell.

johnnyb | 7/25/2007, 5:08 pm EST

omfg! now im really anxious!

NYC Nate | 7/25/2007, 4:52 pm EST

Dude, Matt Sorum. What frat are you rushin’ in the fall, bro? Yeah? Those guys are solid, dude. Peace out, bro.
