Joni Mitchell Signs to Starbucks’ Hear Music Label

Last week Rock Daily reported that the next Hear Music signing would be “one of the all-time great female artists.” Today, Starbucks’ label made it official, announcing Joni Mitchell will join the label following the success of its first major star, Paul McCartney, whose Memory Almost Full generated 47 percent of its sales in Starbucks stores. Mitchell’s first Hear Music album is actually her third effort with the Seattle-based company — she has released one compilation of her favorite music and another where artists like Elvis Costello and Bob Dylan chose their favorite tracks of hers. The forthcoming Shine will hit stores on September 25 and is a part of a series of new work that includes a ballet and an art exhibit. It is also Mitchell’s first album of new material since 1998, and she describes it as “as serious a work as I’ve ever done.”

Wow - want some sour grapes with the coffee, guys? Mitchell has more musical talent in her baby finger than you could ever dream of. You want something to whine about? Whine about the relics (like the Who, etc.) who have allowed their songs to be endlessly played on car commercials, etc.

Get a life. I’d rather hear Joni anywhere, anytime than NOT hear her. I’m so happy she’s working, her lyrics alone are incredible, and then you add her voice, and class, and there is no one that can touch her. Joni, I hope you make a ton of dough teaming up w/ Sbucks while we benefit from the great distribution that Starbucks will bring.

More power to Joni! I don’t care who whom or what she makes her deals with as long as she keeps the music coming. Can’t wait to hear “Shine.” Also looking forward to Herbie Hancock’s album of Joni “covers.”

If it means more listeners get to appreciate this wonderful talent then so be it. Hope there is a little of the piano playing and real acoustic guitar from her mid period. Not sure if I really love the electronic- sounding guitar effect on the last studio album. No doubt the lyrics will still be top notch.

I had some dreams she has seen clouds in her coffee from both sides now.

Joni had such a bad time with her record label in the past (they treated her with so much disrespect) I’m not surprised she has signed with Starbucks - needs must and she needs to get her stuff out there - she is the Queen of music

Joni is one of the few artists working in music who can truly be called a genius. Over 30 years she produced an unbelievably rich and varied body of work, not only through words and music, but also through art and other visual media. All 3 times I saw her in concert she was amazing. I can’t wait to hear her new songs!

shindogg | 7/28/2007, 9:51 pm EST

she looks a lil old to be joinin a record label. why don’t you apply for librarian or secretary somewhere?

Re: PAUL McCartney. Mel, perhaps it’s merely you that sucks.

So what if the great Joni Mitchell signs up with Starbucks? Where is so much conflict, my peace-loving warriors? Isn´t Greenpeace teamed with the previously known as villain Exxon? Why get up to bash the lady of our dreams - beautiful, intelligent and still working - just because she is the lady of our dreams???….Peace you all!!

Jeff Johnson | 7/27/2007, 7:16 pm EST

That scent on his fingers has turned into the sweet smell of cash. I know it’s just jealousy but I would’ve loved to see her see it through with more dignity. The nearest Starbucks is an hour and a half away. Am I lucky?

pete 77 | 7/27/2007, 5:58 pm EST

Hey folks- give the lady some respect. Her music is/was beyond belief- no one has ever come close to her. I HATE it when the so-called “60’s” stations play only Stones and Zep; at the time, she had as much ‘juice’ as anyone, before the return to rock’s sexist days. Oh, yeah- I don’t drink coffee.

ALL selling of records, CDs, music, concert tickets is “capitalistic”. So what? Artists need venues to connect with people and sell their music. It sure isn’t happening as a result of the bland/uninspired/evil/boring thing that ALL commercial radio has become. So whether it’s through some god-awful major label, an indie label, a web site or a coffee store…who cares? Just glad that someone as experienced and talented as Mitchell is trying some way, ANY way, to get her music heard in this soulless culture of crap we currently live in.

Joni rules no matter what…
But I guess he doesn’t play for free after all. Starbucks pays his tab. Remember Paris? Stoke that star maker machinery.

Underdose | 7/25/2007, 10:57 pm EST

I’m so sick of going into Starbucks and hearing that shitty Paul McCartney album…man it sucks.

Bigstarlet | 7/25/2007, 10:03 pm EST

Yo! Before anyone gets on Joni’s case for signing to Hear Music, consider that, even back in her “prime”, she never once had a Top 10 album, while those “influenced” by her (i.e. Jewel, et. al.) have been all over the charts. Can’t we give praise to someone who showing the youngsters how it’s done, and allow her to have a pay day, just this once? As long as the queen gets heard, what does it matter who, or what, signed her?

Mel | 7/25/2007, 9:01 pm EST

I love Joni, and I can’t wait to hear more of her amazing lyrics and passionate strumming. Let’s celebrate that we have new material rather than trashing this beautiful woman’s latest sharing of her soul. I am thrilled to have new material regardless of where she chooses to market it.

Ugly Bastard | 7/25/2007, 8:21 pm EST

This will work out perfect for me! I don´t drink coffee and I can´t stand Joni Mitchell! Now if they could talk some more awful artists into signing with Starbucks´ label, the world could be a sweet place… Celine ? Gwen ? Akon ?

I am SO DISSAPPOINTED in Joni Mitchell!!! Alas!!! Still yet another hippie sell out! (Heavy sigh!)

Anonymous | 7/25/2007, 6:13 pm EST

Umm…wasn’t big yellow taxi about as anti-establishment as a song could get? Isn’t her signing to a label run by starbucks then soaked with irony? Goddamnit joni mitchell.

Nello | 7/25/2007, 3:32 pm EST

Hey Victoria Hills, how many Starbucks Triple Mochas did you gobble down before you wrote that rant. Chill out a bit, eh?

Victoria Hills | 7/25/2007, 1:27 pm EST

It’s a great dissapointment for me to be loyal to Toni Mitchell as I have been over the last 30 years….has she not been educated on what a capitalistic corp. like Starbucks is, impoverished coffee grower only get 25p per kilo for their crop and, self gratifying folks pay £2.30 for one cup of coffee containing about 2gms.. this disgusting support, “but ignorance is bliss”, wake up Joni

wrecksracer | 7/25/2007, 1:16 pm EST

Et tu, Joni?

Starbucks has become a corporate behemoth. I just read that they’re going to be charging nine cents more for their drinks.

Do you really think someone like Joni Mitchell in this day and age could afford a three dollar cuppa joe?

Buy local!

Jughead | 7/25/2007, 11:26 am EST

It’s very fitting that Joni Mitchell will be on the Starbucks label.

We can all use a fews shots of espresso and grande cappucinos to keep us awake when listening Joni Mitchell’s stuff.

Claude | 7/25/2007, 10:41 am EST

I hope she has cut down on her smoking…
