Devo Smack Down Korn, Talk First New Album In Nearly Two Decades

7/25/07, 2:09 pm EST

photo: Korn“Humans are continuing to evolve as a species,” says a man wearing a ridiculous white wig and moustache. “But instead of evolving forward we are evolving backward.” This is all part of Korn’s fake trailer for a film called Devolution: Nature’s U-Turn, which argues that chaos on the planet is proof mankind is slowly devolving back into apes.

Sound familiar? It sure did to Jerry Casale, whose band Devo has been making movies and songs about De-evolution since their formation in 1972. Casale, who learned of the project when a rattled Devo fan sent him the link, responded by posting a brief message on the official Devo Web site: “Korn Runs Rampant w/ Devolution — No Nod to DEVO,” he wrote. “We denounce this as imposters playing with fire.”

The reaction from the Korn audience was swift and severe. “Their fanbase, being pretty cretinous, took it like a serious smackdown,” Casale says. “They started writing vicious hate-filled e-mails saying, ‘You guys don’t own the word “devolution” What makes you think you can come out of retirement and say stuff about the great Korn?’ We went, ‘Wow, this is insane. This is a perfect example of devolution. You’re a case in point, pal. Gee, I’m sorry we thought all this up thirty years ago and have been putting it out there and preaching it ever since.’”

Casale would like a tip-of-the-hat to Devo somewhere on the Korn site, but he won’t hold his breath. “I wouldn’t hope for anything from people today, are you kidding?” he says. “We live in a subhuman mean-ass society where everyone has learned to be totally disgusting and spiritless. It starts at the top and trickles down. When you have an administration like we have, everybody learns that ‘fuck you’ is the rule of the day. Every time the president speaks it’s a painful example that de-evolution is real.”

Casale sees other evidence of Devo’s continuing legacy in some of today’s artists. “I’m glad that bands are picking up stylistic things from our music,” he says. “I really like LCD Soundsystem, TV on the Radio and Interpol. I’m glad all this stuff is happening. I hated all that grunge shit. That was such an energy drain.”

Devo, who took much of the 1990s off, just got back from a European tour. They plan on playing South America and Australia later this year before returning to America next summer. They also have a new song in a Dell commercial that may even pave the way for their first new album since 1990’s Smooth Noodle Maps. “Mark [Mothersbaugh] is less resistant to it than he has been in years,” Casale says. “He did sit down and cooperate on a few songs, so odds are better than ever.”

I didn’t really care much for devo – but Korn sucks for not giving a shout out to the band which so obviously brought us de-evolution

Tim | 7/25/2007, 3:01 pm EST

Dumb. Yes, Korn stole the word Devolution from an band that hasn’t been relevent since the 80s. This is Devo’s way of returning into the mainstream attention.

NYC Nate | 7/25/2007, 3:12 pm EST

Yeah, Tim. I’m sure Devo needs to ride Korn’s coat tails back into rock music. And, has Korn been relevant since the nineties? Not unless your a fan of WWE’s “Smackdown” (in which case you shouldn’t be referring to ‘relevance’ by any stretch of the imagination). Devo’s musical legacy in music is what will carry them back into the mainstream; that and the inclusion of Mark Mothersbaugh on subsequent recordings. So, Devo fans: “AAAARE YOOOU REEAAAADY?!?!?!” Duh-duh; Duh-duh; Duh-duh; Duh-Duh; Duh-duh-duh-duh

Bill | 7/25/2007, 3:18 pm EST

KORN was wetting there Mama’s bed (and still are) when DEVO was offering a musical alternative that is still timeless.

Devo-Sam | 7/25/2007, 3:24 pm EST

Your post just proves what Jerry said. Buncha mean-ass punks. You probably weren’t born yet when these guys made their first appearance on SNL and turned the music world upside down for a weekend. These guys broke out with a whole new sound and real social commentary.

That’s more than you can say for the nth generation metal band. Big whoop.

GrIM | 7/25/2007, 3:38 pm EST

its only a marketing ploy by korn and shouldnt be made a big deal of. devo is right this an example of devolution. go on devos myspace and youll see how childish the devo fans were. korn fans only responded to the lashing out by devo and thier fans. devo still claims to have created the term and meaning. i think everyone complaining needs to grow up. korn and devo fans. but Jerry Casale should embrace another band joining in rather than try to take credit like someone in need of money.

rudness | 7/25/2007, 3:44 pm EST

tell johnathan davis to slap jerry with his fat ass wallet

baba o riley | 7/25/2007, 3:44 pm EST

did anyone expect anything more from Korn or its fans? I mean seriously.

Hmmm | 7/25/2007, 3:49 pm EST

From Wikipedia

The term has been used in the play Inherit the Wind, the character of Matthew Brady (representative of William Jennings Bryan) using the term to argue that “ape devolved from man”, mocking evolutionary theory by offering an alternative he considers just as plausible.

Inherit The Wind (circa 1955)

I think the playright should complain about Devo stealing his idea.

bp | 7/25/2007, 4:02 pm EST

It’s funny that Devo would try and say bands like Interpol or TV On The Radio even remotely sound like them.

Dave | 7/25/2007, 4:10 pm EST

This is just as bad as if Oasis ripped off the Beatles…oh wait!

CaraElizabeth | 7/25/2007, 4:12 pm EST

I’d take Devo to Korn any day.

silly red hats > white dude dreads

'stop whining!' | 7/25/2007, 4:17 pm EST

The word devolution did not originate from any musician. It had been around for quite some time before either band existed. This whining is not justified.

awwwww | 7/25/2007, 4:20 pm EST

those hats are so adorable!

dradiant | 7/25/2007, 4:26 pm EST

are we talking about the same DEVO that fostered and nutured the sell out band DEVO 2.0, talk about nepatism and an awful low for music. so don’t talk about art or credibility with these has beens, (except for Mothersbaugh – who is a genius composer) but the rest need to get part time jobs at a qwikee mart and stop complaining about past glory.

cathy porter | 7/25/2007, 4:31 pm EST

DEVO SPELLED BACKWARDS IS OVED…AND WHEN ARE THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY AND THE COWSILS GOING TO THROW DOWN OVER THE PF STEALING THEIR ROCKIN’ IDEA OF A MOM-LED GROUP? ALL I CAN SAY IS ROCK ON KEITH AND DANNY AND WHO WAS THAT CHICK WITH THE TAMBOURINE? YES, MY JOB IS BORING AND I HAVE TOO MUCH TIME ON MY HANDS-HEY REMEMBER STYX?

bayliss | 7/25/2007, 4:32 pm EST

devo are brilliant. korn…creamed or frozen nibblets?

dapeacfrog | 7/25/2007, 4:32 pm EST

Devo were great, Korn is typical metal mouthmash heads,. but seems the term was coined by some play or movie in 1955? but give credit to Devo, the very name shows they had it way before those corny kornholios. silly beef but whos more silly the beefers? or those who comment on the beef? where is the beef anyhow??

jai | 7/25/2007, 4:35 pm EST

who cares

Dave | 7/25/2007, 4:42 pm EST

Bob Casale & Josh Freese are also in DEVO my friend. DEVO isn’t claiming to have invented the word. They did however base their entire philosophy of all the media they created (music/video/film) on the basis of de-evolution. It’s even what the name of the band is short for. Anyone who sides with Korn which decided to blatantly rip off icons and not give them any kind of credit is greatly misinformed and ignorant to anything DEVO made. Here’s a history lesson kids, do your homework and know the facts before you disrespect “ORIGINAL ARTISTS”.

Johnny Kickass | 7/25/2007, 4:45 pm EST

Korn try to be scary.

Devo ARE scary – or at least they creeped me out when I was a little kid.

Ha. Just goes to show that Korn doesn’t have a single original idea; they steal everything.

I’m not a huge fan of Devo – other than “Whip It” – but you have to give them credit for coming up with something new: Devolution, etc.

Korn, on the other hand, are nothing but a bunch of nu metal opportunists who refuse to do the right thing and just break up. I hope they get sued.

Turbo douchbag 14 year olds who play video games and hang out at the mall.

Oh, and apparantly the singer for Evanessence, another retard.
Devo rules!
Korn, your 15 minutes is wayyyyyyyy past up.

KjDahl | 7/25/2007, 8:39 pm EST

Devo and Korn both played Lollapalooza in 97′. Can’t we all play nice!?

Satan | 7/25/2007, 8:51 pm EST

Both are shit bands formed by no-talent ass-clowns.”We are not humans we are devo”.Fuck you all in your fucking necks.Amen,my job is finished.

Has Korn started writing good music yet? What about Devo?…Play from your gnikcuf hearts…damnit

KLiffee | 7/25/2007, 9:19 pm EST

DEVO were rEvolutionary and are just pointing out that someone is stealing their idea. It’s not even done in a new, clever way. It’s point-blank rip-off. And Jerry Casale is also right-on about the dEvolution of our society, and that our pResident sElect is living proof, along with Paris Hilton, the popularity of ‘reality’ shows and tough man contests.

jungleland | 7/25/2007, 11:06 pm EST

Peek-a-boo, We see you (Korn) and we know what you do.
Booji Boy is gonna get you!

Derek | 7/25/2007, 11:12 pm EST

Who are Devo really trying kid? These “artists” act as if they have sole proprietership over a theory. Thoughts of the “de-evolving” human species has been a school of thought since the Enlightenment. I think that they are attempting to cause a stir with a major band in an attempt to garner some fame.

Devo is still one of the best live shows you can attend. I caught them on the 2004,and 2005 tours.
Korn on the other hand is generic and tedious pablum being fed to the hot topic shopping masses.

im sick of people going out of there way to say that bands that korn and metallica suck….we get it, you dont like them or their style of music, now just shut the hell up already, these bands are going to continue to sell records and tickets to their shows every night

Snookums | 7/26/2007, 2:21 am EST

Most of Korn’s fans probably don’t even know who Devo are, considering they were most likely born only in the last 15 years.Anybody older than that, should have developed mentally and enough to know better not to listen to such childish rubbish as Korn.

James | 7/26/2007, 3:16 am EST

Devo’s first 5 cds,Are We Not Men,Duty Now For The Future,Freedom Of Choice,New Traditionalists, and Oh No It’s Devo are priceless masterpieces that are absolutely timeless.Korn are absolute shit and will never ever have that.Devo are innovators in music and are still considered so today, considering they formed in 1976.Korn are just a bunch of Nu Metal losers whose sound went stale back in the 90’s along with Limp Bizkit.

Bill | 7/26/2007, 3:53 am EST

Grunge rocks, Devo on the other hand..

Nic | 7/26/2007, 3:53 am EST

Devo never claimed to have “invented” the theory of Devolution – it’s well documented where they took their ideas from – but they were certainly the first band (and only band, up until now) to use it as a concept.

And in answer to those Korn fans who are dismissing Devo as an irrelevant one hit wonder from from the 80s, Devo have been playing the US in recent years to packed out audiences, and have just completed a successful European tour – because current bands more perceptive than Korn recognise their huge influence on current music and respect the fact that they were probably THE most innovative band around.

Bilvis | 7/26/2007, 5:31 am EST

DEVO > korn Kornhead meet your maker…lol. “Korn, I am you Father” LOL

Max Power | 7/26/2007, 7:33 am EST

I think you all are getting really baffled by this…just see these pieces of shit for what they are.”We’re rock stars for Dell computers, woohoo!”Anyone who does a commercial is officially taken off the artistic role call.So take a step back and look…”devo,…korn,…oh,I get it,they’re just pieces of shit!”-It’s Kieth Richards for Snickers!-”Sometimes when I’m on stage doing a guitar solo and I haven’t eaten or slept in like 18 fuckin’ days, and the needle broke off in me’ arm,I NEED A SNICKERS.”That’s a fucking rock star.

It might be pointless to say which band sucks worse–it’s all a matter of your tastes. I’ve never heard more than one Devo song, cause it jus’ ain’t my thang, but I have all of Korn. Davis does a lot of side projects with other groups, so why not do a little gig with Korn-Devo for fun to sooth hurt feelings?

bobtlizard | 7/26/2007, 10:23 am EST

Jerry probably directed Korn’s video. It’s a great way for both bands to get media attention.

I read people’s comments asking who cares about either of these bands, and I laugh.

A) You check rollingstone.com daily and read everything posted.

B) You obviously read this entire article, which indicates clearly in the title that it is about both Korn and Devo.

C) You took 2 minutes out of your life, or possibly more, to post a comment about it.

Devo claiming to have invented devolution and Korn pretending to be smart are both ridiculous. P.S. The Devo guys hates grunge, so he sucks.

Why | 7/26/2007, 11:38 pm EST

does anyone give a shit about this band?

Devo vs Korn | 7/27/2007, 12:30 am EST

This isn’t the first time Devo has stirred up hate and discontent. On their first album “We are Devo” back in 78′ they pissed off the majority of Rolling Stones fans with their robotic version of “Satisfaction”; the Down’s syndrome advocates with “Mongoloid”. and the athletic community with “Jocko Homo”. Although Devo didn’t coin the term devolution they popularized it by equating it with the urban decay that was rapidly taking over their home base of Akron, Ohio and much of America during the 70’s. I don’t really know too much about Korn except they have been around for at least ten years, they originally started as a rap or nu- metal band and have put out a few albums during that time. Like much of what has been put out in the last 15 years, i’m sure it is quite devolutionary. Devo, although enjoyable for a couple of years back in the day, is just another fringe oldies act trying to cash in on whatever legacy they had. If they don’t have anything new to say, it is best they give it up and get a real job.

riley | 7/27/2007, 1:09 am EST

wow fuck devo, they cant own a word and korn fans are a hell of a lot more DEVOted than devo fans, hopefully devo dont try to cause publicity there. lol korn kick ass and devo like it up the ass. nuff said.

riley | 7/27/2007, 1:14 am EST

i never wanna hear devo and korn in the same sentence ever again. that is the sign of the appocolypse. lol. while im still intrested fuck devo once again.

mattloaf | 7/27/2007, 2:15 am EST

Jerry Casale is right. Devo is one of the few bands like Steely Dan, Meatloaf, and Queen who are pretty much one of a kind and not derivative of other bands or performers. “De-evolution” defined them in what they were saying and playing in their music. They own it and always have. Korn is irrelevant now and while their music might be “sick” they didn’t influence as many bands as Devo have. But hey…I invented
the keyboard necktie and dont get the props I deserve. There is no gravity….the earth sucks…aloha.

Ragman | 7/27/2007, 3:39 am EST

Why does Devo think they need to attack newer, more popular bands in order to be relevant again? Devo didn’t invent devolution, nor did they popularize the concept to the extent they claim.

And Korn’s output (especially their early material) is much better and more influencial than they get credit for; they tend to be criticized by people who haven’t even heard much of their music and are just trying prove their “indie cred.”

KornFansSuck | 7/27/2007, 9:37 am EST

It’s true. It must be embarrassing for Korn to have an army of douchebags as a fanbase.

James | 7/27/2007, 10:05 am EST

Korn is terrible. Good luck with that bad ass tour with Amy Lee! Let’s go cry over my mommy being mean to me some more. Give me a break! It’s old and out dated.

Hicks | 7/27/2007, 10:24 am EST

Bill Hicks was one of the smartest men to ever live on this retarded planet. I’m glad at least one of you fucking sheep actually recognized the ranting of a fucking genious.

Vankook | 7/27/2007, 11:07 am EST

It’s time for Korn to just give up the ship. They haven’t put out anything even remotely close to decent since “Follow the leader” And that was only good up until that horrendous rap duet with perennial frat-boy douchebag Fred Durst. Really Really sad to say when your best song off of an album is a cameo cover from the early 90’s. The reason that Korn fans are so incensed and angry with this is because they have already taken a step towards devolving towards apes and are sub-human. That is why I stopped listening to them 7 years ago. I couldn’t lower myself enough to identify with their neanderthalic message and primitive sound.

Max Power | 7/27/2007, 1:19 pm EST

Ok,It’s Max Power for Bill Hicks!-”When I’m trying to hack my way through this brier patch of shitty music like DEVO and Korn,I listen to BILL HICKS.(Happy now, douche?)

boogie boy | 7/27/2007, 2:50 pm EST

Devo’s level of intellect and musical composition make Korn look like the rip off artists that they are. Devo were pioneers, Korn was created by aggressive marketing of rehashed ideas.

Devo was associated with the Church of the Subgenius.

Korn was associated with Fred Durst. And one of the members sucked enough to be born again.

Advantage-Devo. Give your $30 to Bob.

“lol korn kick ass and devo like it up the ass. nuff said. ”

Kind of ironic consider that douche singer from Korn has made a living being upset and sad that he was porked anally when he was a kid. Devo were visionary…Korn was just another shit-ass rap metal band who made it on a fan base of shit-ass idiots.

Korn was a solid band, and despite their last two albums, they might pick up the slack. Devo is also a good band, but it is true that they don’t hold rights to the term de-evolution as it is a philosophical quandry having been asked since the early 20th Century as technology began to take away jobs and make lives easier.

That being said, Devo dissing grunge is bullshit and yes Korn may have helped Limp Bizkit but the guy from Devo wrote the score to Rugrats.

Rod | 7/27/2007, 9:12 pm EST

According to Devo’s Jerry Casale, “I wouldn’t hope for anything from people today, are you kidding?” he says. “We live in a subhuman mean-ass society where everyone has learned to be totally disgusting and spiritless.”

Wow. Dude’s a real free-thinker, huh?

Booji Boy | 7/27/2007, 10:47 pm EST

We await to see whether Korn will show how “bad-ass” they are by symbolically stomping on one of our signature energy-domes on-stage at their next concert, to the neanderthal-like hoots and cries of the audience!

Ps.Caerulipes | 7/27/2007, 11:22 pm EST

Maybe they should duke it out with glock nines, you know tupac style.

MikePattonIsGod(like) | 7/27/2007, 11:50 pm EST

Devo had one, yes only one great album, and it was great from start to end. It’s called “Oh No! It’s Devo!” This is exactly one good album more than Korn ever had or ever will have.

Lucifer Sam | 7/28/2007, 12:46 am EST

Pack it up Korn. You and your idiotic Limp Bizkit fans are going the way of Night Ranger and Styx. What really kills me are the dumb redneck rap metal fans who hate rap. Save the growling and stomping for recess, imbeciles.

riley | 7/28/2007, 1:12 am EST

hahaha whip it, whip it good. well devo and their panzy ass fans can beat it because korn are here to stay wether you guys like it or not.

no need | 7/28/2007, 3:35 am EST

there is no need to argue over which band is better or worse because its all a matter of oppinion…..

but Jerry and Devo fans shouldnt be complaining and talking trash because you cant steal a philosophical idea

Rodney | 7/28/2007, 3:42 am EST

I’ll repeat:

It’s not about ownership of the de-evolution concept.

It’s about OG vs posers who’re too lazy to come up with their own schtick.

T-Nasty | 7/28/2007, 3:04 pm EST

Ah, DEVO being ripped off and not given credit… AGAIN. Jocks vs. Nerds again and again and again…

T-Nasty | 7/28/2007, 3:07 pm EST

wow, some dude really invested a lot of time into this “Post a Comment” RS.com debate.

I’m looking at you, “riley”

Kinda Ready | 7/28/2007, 8:19 pm EST

Devo=great band
korn=nu-metal crap that is obiviously marketed to the mentally ill.
Grunge wasn’t an energy drain it had punk energy. The genere he is thinking of is post-grunge.

Anonymous | 7/29/2007, 3:14 am EST

i like KORN,i love DeVo! what really matters the most to me is that DeVo might be making a new album! this is fucking AWESOME NEWS!!! I HOPE IT IS TRUE!!!

Anton AU | 7/29/2007, 11:13 am EST

LMAO so ture though-they more then proved their point though-Korn have un-evolved (as i prefer) to go all the way back 30 years to copy this dribble….

wow indeed.

Does this mean that in about 28 years, Korn will be good again?

Anton AU | 7/29/2007, 11:14 am EST

ok im done on dissing devo and korn being dissed. they share the same passion for music and the devolution. i dont think korn stole the idea from devo, they were inspired and influenced by devo’s idea.

causeman | 7/29/2007, 2:43 pm EST

Korn probably doesnt know much about Devo…why would they call the film DEVOLUTION if they did..that would be a blantant rip off. So by now they should realise…shit..we have done something somebodys already done.
Suck it up Korn…give some kudos to Devo..and move on from there.
We all have freedom of speech and expression but as artists we should recognise whats come before us…music pioneers.

KOPH | 7/29/2007, 5:52 pm EST

nobody gave kudos to korn.. and A FUCK LOAD of bands should..

Artemisian | 7/29/2007, 8:51 pm EST

I’m a steadfast Korn fan, and if I do say myself I hardly quality for the ‘cretinous’ category. Frankly, I haven’t given this entire ‘devolution’ theory much thought either time around: I’m interested in the /music/, you see. Strange concept, I know.
If every artist using a theme had to nod to every artist who’d utilised it previously, it’d be exhausting.

proletariat | 7/30/2007, 12:33 am EST

theyre just a bunch of ignorant puss feeling so full of themselves and who cares about DEVOLUTION, silly concept

W/E | 7/30/2007, 2:57 am EST

This is bullshit. Devo come up with the phrase Devolution, and Korn use it. So fucking what? You put a D at the front of evolution, and then a shit load of complaints.

bleek | 7/30/2007, 4:53 am EST

both band suck a**

DoesAnyoneGetWhatJerrySaid? | 7/30/2007, 9:15 am EST

KoRn fans (I am one too)… Shut up. By every hateful comment you make you are proving both Jerry and Jonathan’s concept of devolution.

Devo fans (I am not one though I like Whip It)… Shut up. You keep spouting off about Jerry Casale and how he’s true and all but I couldn’t help but notice the hateful undertones in everything said.

“They started writing vicious hate-filled e-mails saying, ‘You guys don’t own the word “devolution” What makes you think you can come out of retirement and say stuff about the great Korn?’

“We live in a subhuman mean-ass society where everyone has learned to be totally disgusting and spiritless.

Every time the president speaks it’s a painful example that de-evolution is real.”

Jerry Casale is just a hypocrite. He’s hateful himself yet he acts as if he’s the reincarnation of Jesus.

I’m not saying that KoRn is right because they should, at the very least, nod in Devo’s direction.

Plus didn’t the start of the whole “devolution” come from technology yet DEvo is a band based on nothing but technology? Kind of hypocritical…

Bop Gun Jr. | 7/30/2007, 12:10 pm EST

There’s a kid on my street who wears a KORN t-shirt and blasts them from his car, he’s still rockin’ the mullet, has a whispy moustache, lives in his mum’s basement, his girlfriend is a plump employee of Petsmart, also has a whispy moustache……..

THE NFRGIVN | 7/30/2007, 1:41 pm EST

DEVO SUCKS THEY DON’T EVEN MAKE GOOD MUSIC AND THEIR ONLY HIT WAS THAT LAME ASS SONG WHIP IT WICH IS THE LAMEST THING I’VE HEARD, THEY DRESS UP LIKE ASSHOLES USING THOSE STUPID HATS, HOW THEY DARE TO BAD MOUTH ABOUT KORN? WICH IS THE BIGGEST BAND IN THE WORLD,
EVEN I OWN THE DEVOLUTION CONCEPT
I THINK DEVO SHOULD SHUT THE FUCK UP, DEAL WITH IT LIKE IT OR NOT AND STAY IN THE PAST LIKE MANY OTHER LAME BANDS
IT’S 2007,DEVO WAS LEFT BEHIND SO MUCH TIME AGO.
PLUS, IMPOSTERS PLAYING WITH FIRE?
KORN HAS FAR MUCH MORE POWER AND FANS THAN DEVO IN THEIR TIME.
THEY TALK LIKE IF THEY WERE A BIG BAND LIKE QUEEN OR SOMETHING
I’M DONE

Don Ammon | 7/30/2007, 6:59 pm EST

I was at Lollapalooza in 1996 when Korn opened for headliner DEVO.

Thorgrimm | 7/30/2007, 9:03 pm EST

My support will always be for DEVO… not because who they are or what they sound like. I am a fan and always will be, they are one of my first record purchases as a wee lad.

As I do recognize that KORN are indeed innovators in their genre (not unlike DEVO was/is…) I dont believe however that they are innocent of stealing the DEVO litany.

KORN are all around my age, mid-30’s and grew up to all the same media as I did. They do covers of bands of that same era for crying out loud (check out their “covers” album idea), so it’s impossible that they are unaware of DEVO.

It’s the same horseshit that bands like LORDI are doing to bands like GWAR… stealing someone else’s ideas and taking credit for it.

All you youngsters out their who are quick to talk shit… keep in mind that you’ll be on the receiving end of 35 someday and some band will be ripping off one of your childhood hero’s and you’ll be annoyed by all the newbies talking shit. Simply because they aren’t privy to bands outside their HOT TOPIC/MTV soaked pee-brains.

THERE IS ALOT OF MUSIC OUTSIDE OF COMMERCIAL MEDIA… open your minds a bit for fucks sake!

Reel Dad | 7/30/2007, 10:58 pm EST

I saw Devo live in Chicago touring on their first album. I guarantee NOBODY ever saw anything like it at the time. Creative, wacky, inventive, offbeat…I could come up with a hundred adjectives that describe the band and their music. Even in the atmosphere of the New Wave/Punk movement that virtually ended the stranglehold of disco on America, Devo stood out and garnered lots of attention in a pre-internet world. In other words, they were unique. Their fans were hip, intelligent and they “got it”. They understood what the band was all about. And,trust me, Whip It was not even the best song they wrote.

Korn, on the other hand, well, not so much. Fairly standard thrash/metal/rap genre. I suppose they do their genre well. But you can’t compare them with the genre-bending music Devo did in the 70’s and 80’s. Is Devo a philosophical band based on the writings of some monk in China? No, they were just a group of clever musicians that invented a new niche of music. Is Korn a philosophical band? I would guarantee you not.

Riley, I know you said you were done ragging on Devo, but I just have to comment: Do you know how idiotic you sound because you say that all members of Devo take it up the ass? Does that make you sound more intelligent or lend any credence to your argument? I would wager to say that the members of Devo or their fans wouldn’t pander the way you have throughout these postings. You certainly do come off as an idiot, though fearfully, you are probably one of those college students that will be graduating without being able to spell or know the basics of grammar.

Speaking of grammar, I earlier mentioned the word “adjective”. Do you know what that is?

opinions_and_music | 7/31/2007, 10:49 am EST

I have three things to say.

1. You guys take this thing too seriously. Instead of sitting in front of your computers being part of a flame war on something that is not a big deal why don’t you do something meaningful like discuss the philosophy instead of who is the better band.

2. Yes, Korn needs to give Devo the nod… But Devo needs to give the nod to all the people before them. Everyone steals something, especially in music.Music has been around forever that’s why new bands get the boot so fast, it is hard to come up with idea to bring home the bacon when so much has been done before.

3. I have not seen anything that separates the Devo fans with the Korn fans on this. I expected more out of the “mature” crowd. If all you two groups can do is bicker and stereotype (yes I’m a fan of both)… Shut up and go listen to your music and mull around with your own groups. Like they say, “Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one.”

Just calm down and debate philosophy. The affairs of a band are not automatically the affairs of its fans.

idontlikeyouthatway | 7/31/2007, 1:17 pm EST

Yet the unfit may live
Let ‘em wear gaudy colors

Hey it don’t matter
It’s all the same

So I do this and I do that

It’s never straight up and down

Oh you got a nickel
I got a dime
I’d like to get to know you
But I haven’t got the time
You gotta walk like a mannequin
Roll like a tire
Act on reaction
Dodge the big spud fryer
So wiggle on the bottom
Wiggle on the top
Wiggle up the middle
And laugh a lot
Cause I’ve been living in a wiggly world
Wiggly world, a wiggly world
I got to tell you
I’ve been living in a wiggly world now
Wiggly world, a wiggly world
Well I’ve been living in a wiggly world

I got to tell you
I’ve been living in a wiggly world

Korn– sucking the dick of marketing for over fifteen years.

DevoFrank | 8/4/2007, 12:36 am EST

Ah Man! this is so DEVO !!!!!
I just did 2 years in a california
prison and saw a lot of Korn fans and they were all DEVO!!!

Wee Iz DE-VO !!!

Metacognition | 8/9/2007, 7:01 pm EST

Devo was just some little flash in the pan novelty act riding the coattails of the new wave craze. Thay aren’t serious musicians. Just look at them. They wear traffic cones on their heads. If anyone in this situation were ‘playing with fire,’ it would be them. Korn is an ultrapopular rock group that has redefined the heavy metal genre, and what has Devo done lately? Nothing. This is the first I’ve heard of them in years. Them publicly starting a feud with a behemoth like Korn is probably just a publicity stunt to reclaim some of their long lost popularity. Devo has been completely dead lately, they haven’t put out a new album in seventeen years. Korn however, has put our four full length albums, (not eps) in the past two years. Devo is totally pathetic. Thay dress like garbage collectors. And that’s all they’re music is, really, garbage. Devo died in the eighties. It’s time for them to give up the ghost. Thay sucked hard then and they suck infinately harder now. Thay talk as if they’re such big shots like Queen, but they’re not, thay’re just some dead eighties New Wave group that needs to learn their place. Thay have no right to say anything negative of Korn, Korn has sold more albums than they ever will. Korn is a household name, Devo was all but forgotten until now. Devo is pathetic and they’re music is garbage.

deadwake | 8/12/2007, 1:09 pm EST

all you people are jackasses, just frikin morons! All you little immature Korn fans and all you old as f*ck Devo fans shove it up you arse! I listen to a lot of music all genres and yes I even own a couple of korn and Devo albums music is music. Don’t try and make this about the music, the question is if Korn intentionally tried to jack a concept that Devo coined decades ago. Personally I don’t think so but the hell if I know. Oh and another thing, ol’ Jerry Casale seems to be extremely hypocritical just by the comments he made.

B in Ohio | 8/13/2007, 11:35 am EST

HAHAHA. These comments were a waste of my time and I read most of them. Can I get the last 5 minutes of my life back? Please?

Long live Devo.
Fuck Korn.

DEATH TO DEVOLVED DEF-KORN-BIZGIT-AU-GO-GO BANDS! I hated you in high school and I hate you now.
And I hope you white trash juggalo types in the heartland trip on your oversize pants and break open your heads.
KORN SUCKS
THE LATE 90s ARE OVER, JUGGALOS
DEVO WILL NEVER DIE

JuggaloMike | 8/28/2007, 8:08 pm EST

Who the hell is Devo? Korn is awsome. So what if they took Devolution. It just means that they are on the same page as Devo. And to those of you who are bagging on us Juggalos, fuck you. You just want to judge us before you know the facts.

ROCKA ROLLA | 9/28/2007, 9:50 pm EST

How many of you turd herding Devo bashers are actually OVER 30? Milli Vanilli also solds “tons” of records. Nuff said. Bottom line is, on the great rock and roll mountain, Devo is much higher up than korn will ever be,regardless of how much time has passed after their heydey. It’s like who was better between the Velvet Underground and Blue Cheer.

Nazurith | 9/30/2007, 3:49 am EST

I just find it so amusing that some stupid fan of band said hey this nu metal band stole ur song..well fuck if that happened to every band there probably wouldnt even be music everyone would be acusing others of stealing lyrics (if u take the time to look at the lyrics of dif bands a lot of the shit is the same) thats just music people (or most) just sing about what they feel and just stuff that they believe and it just so happens that DEVO and Korn both believe nature is takin a u turn for the worst so fucking what u cant get mad at someone for having the same opinion as you…well u could but it would absolutly retarted…but seriously calm down people and quit gettin pissed over some dude’s comment that doesnt even like within a 1K mile radius of you and u j renderman are so retarded u are the perfect example u think that if someone has the same opinion as someone else that they diserve to die wth that is so lame i mean come on whats the point of even having opinions if people get pissed if u agree with them. I do think nature is takin a u turn cause all u assholes are bein such dicks over such a little issue…not even a issue its a matter.

ROCKA ROLLA | 9/30/2007, 3:34 pm EST

I get going to bat for VH, LED ZEP SABBATH, but sheesh, were talking about Korn! A band maybe a layer, and I mean THIN layer above suck. They should kiss Devo’s feet.

William Benton | 10/19/2007, 10:26 am EST

We must repeat.

joshcrime | 12/5/2007, 1:06 pm EST

Devo was art that somehow managed to find a musical outlet. Not to mention that devolution as a concept was their idea, no question. There are precedents for it, but they went further with it and took it to their modern age. And the age continues to advance and they are still right.

Korn, on the other hand, are just another run of the mill metal band. I find it hard to believe that they had never heard of Devo. Even if they themselves hadn’t, you can be their music management, agents or reps had. They tried to pull a fast one, and it failed. Why? Because Devo fans were generally more intellectual than say, Korn fans are likely to be.

Furthermore, you all need to get off the crap. Fans don’t have a damned thing to do with what a band does. Never have. Same with sports teams. You are supporters, i.e., people that enjoy being in the vicinity of the place where the events are taking place. Do not use the word “we” when mentioning Devo, Korn or any other band. There is no “we”. It is “they”. “You” are stupid if you think that “you” have anything to do with what “they” do.

Booji Boy | 12/15/2007, 5:24 pm EST

Being both a Korn and DEVO fan, I have to say Korn should definitely give the nod to DEVO on this since they did invent the idea. DEVO was way ahead of their time.

holymoly | 1/16/2008, 10:18 pm EST

wow.
looks like everyone here has very strong opinions on which band they prefer.
Throwing out “fuck you’s” and “korn sucks” or “devo are for the elderly” and what not really isn’t the point of the discussion.
the point is, devoloution was originally a concept created by devo, korn then took that idea, and made their own spin on it. they are both sharing the same views, who cares, it’s the point of it all that matters. stop defending who you like better and just take a breath, relax and do something about the madness in the world!
go pet a puppy, plant a tree, hug your grandma, BE HAPPY FOR FUCK SAKES OR I’LL SKIN YOU ALL ALIVE!!
hehe…that part was a joke…

mj12 | 3/21/2008, 9:58 am EST

Devo are genius. Korn, welll…..ummm……

spuds rule.

ETN.PUNK | 5/4/2008, 6:01 am EST

WELL,ONE THING TO SAY KORN AT LEAS HAVE A HUGE NUMBER OF FANS AT LEAST HERE IN THE MIDDLE EAST WE KNOW KORN AND WE LIKE IT, BUT WE HAD NEVER HEARED OF DEVO.THIS MEANS THAT KORN IS MORE UNEVIRSAL.
AND I DON’T THINK THAT DIVO THEMSELVES HAVE INVENTED THE CONCEPT OF DEVOLUTION AND EVEN IF THEY DID THAT DOESN’T MEAN THAT NO ONE HAS THE RIGHT TO TALK ABOUT IT .
AND BY THE WAY I AGREE THAT WHEN WE SEE BUSH AND THE APE LOOKING CONDALISA RISE WE REALISE THAT DEVOLUTION IS HAPPENING.

Huboon | 8/6/2008, 8:46 am EST

nevra | 8/18/2008, 3:35 am EST

i love korn the best metal band ever rock on bab

Krista | 10/19/2008, 3:20 am EST

Gee, I can think of a billion bands that sound the same as Korn– they’re nothing special. If you like them, listen to them. But do ya really need to get all pissy? DEVO was and still is a very original band with original thoughts. Deal with it.

Well, come to think of it, if I were in KoЯn (I used to spell my R’s backwards when I was 4, come on) I’d probably probably be upset of not having an original idea of my own too. At least they TRIED and FAILED to take it from band that is intelligent.

And if you can’t see that devolution is relevant, ESPECIALLY in recent times, you’re just devolved yourself.

I guess the name of “KoЯn” gives us an accurate depiction of what to expect from the band themselves and fans alike– they have the same IQ as a four year old trying to sound out the name of a vegetable.

LIPPO | 4/21/2009, 5:15 am EST

Every time I eat korn, it never digests. Its a floater

Jennifer Michelle | 6/10/2009, 1:51 pm EST

I have to say, while DEVO is my favorite band, Korn’s video is pretty good. I’m actually glad to see that a new, popular kid’s band is hitting the some of the same notes as Devo has throughout the past 3 decades. I do, however, believe that Korn should credit DEVO for some of the inspiration, and Kudos to Mark for stepping up and calling them out!

Jennifer Michelle | 6/10/2009, 1:52 pm EST

Well, I just noticed that they have credited DEVO! Yay!
