Free MP3: Hanson’s “Been There Before”

7/24/07, 12:07 pm EST

Photo: Hanson

The brothers Hanson’s latest album, The Walk, arrives in stores today — it’s the second release on their self-run 3CG Records and the first following the ten-year anniversary of sugar-pop hit “MMMBop.” The Walk finds the harmonizing family crafting rock that’s more soulful (”Great Divide”), folky (”Watch Over Me”) and even funky (”Tearin’ It Down”). Sample this acoustic rendition of ’50s-tinged “Been There Before” and see how these onetime teen sensations are handling life in their twenties.

I’ve got nothing against Hanson … I’m sure this board will be full of detractors, but there’s no point in picking on them. They’re the boy band that was actually a band.

The single is catchy, let’s face it. It’ll probably land on a TV soundtrack or Ford commercial and, in spite of this, the world will keep on spinning for those of us who prefer Tom Waits.

Tallboy | 7/24/2007, 3:05 pm EST

Yeah, plus the middle chick is hot.

Natasha | 7/24/2007, 3:11 pm EST

ooh ahhh i love this song!

Chuck | 7/24/2007, 3:25 pm EST

Hey, I don’t mind Hanson, they’ve grown up to be surprisingly good artists. But, what about SILVERCHAIR?? They were lil teen kids destined to disappear and have become AMAAAAZING musicians now!!! Do an article on them, damnit!

Bunny | 7/24/2007, 3:29 pm EST

There are by far way worse things out there than Hanson, they can actually play instruments and write songs…though if I never hear mmmbop again I won’t be upset. I saw them in concert ten years ago, and they are just as good now as they were then.

SATAN | 7/24/2007, 3:37 pm EST

I actually don’t mind them, as long as the aren’t singing mmbop I can live with em’

Jessica | 7/24/2007, 3:42 pm EST

Great Band & everyone should go & get their new cd The Walk!!! Even if your not a Hanson fan i’m sure you’ll love it!

Dawneva | 7/24/2007, 3:44 pm EST

I hope that after this ablum hits the stands and people actually take the time to listen to it they will realize that Hanson is and has always been a band.

Grave | 7/24/2007, 3:44 pm EST

Not a bad song, more respectable than most other musicians from “their era.” I don’t know if it’s something that would make me rush out and buy an album though.

Limp Wrist Brucey | 7/24/2007, 3:47 pm EST

My my my what do we have here?? Mmm, I feel like a boy who’s just stepped into a candy store, yes indeed. Such handsome fine young gentlemen. My goodness, have they grown! They can MMMBop me anytime, if you know what I mean ;-) !!

KBIZ | 7/24/2007, 3:47 pm EST

loooooove

Lucy | 7/24/2007, 3:49 pm EST

Grat band!
Great music!
Been There Before is one of the best songs of The Walk!

People should really listen before talk and stop with the bs about boy bands and things like that.

saylor828 | 7/24/2007, 3:52 pm EST

Have to agree with Chuck. Silverchair still put out great music and evolved into fantastic musicians. Their new album Modern Young is solid, and the single Straight Lines is one of the best songs they’ve written and needs more radio play in the states!

Meganator | 7/24/2007, 4:02 pm EST

The Walk is an amazing album.. and Been There Before is a fave of mine.. they should get the respect they deserve with this album.

The Real | 7/24/2007, 4:17 pm EST

the middles chick is hot nice rack! This band sucks royal ass!

Brittney | 7/24/2007, 4:24 pm EST

Hanson is one of the few bands that actually cares about their music, and their fans. So if it is not your cup a tea, download and say, I didn’t like it. Why continue with nothing better to say then oh their hot chicks. That was funny maybe ten years ago.

For the song and the album, it is by far their best creation.

whooo hooo | 7/24/2007, 4:44 pm EST

my gf loves them.

Nicole | 7/24/2007, 4:47 pm EST

I love this song! It’s one of my favorites. I love how their new Album, and it has turned out to be, by my opinion, the best Album they’ve had.

I hope everything works out for them! I’m certainly going to buy their album!

Erin, Red Model Management | 7/24/2007, 4:53 pm EST

Such talent, great style, amazing album- love the band.

Burnt Crispies | 7/24/2007, 5:04 pm EST

I heard that these guys blow each other off before every concert to get them going. Who knew they were into incest.

kmunalem | 7/24/2007, 5:23 pm EST

thats a real mature comment from “Burnt Crispies”….REAL MATURE…

myspace.com/goddamnidiot | 7/24/2007, 5:40 pm EST

These kids have always been talented. But, bands that have success in their youth, like Hanson or Silverchair, always have a really hard time living it down in the eyes of the haters. Good new tune though. Nothing I’d buy, personally, but still, good tune.

poor guys | 7/24/2007, 6:14 pm EST

great music, horrible lyrics for guys who claim to be happy, married and in love. the lyrics to most of the album read like break-up letters and suicide notes.

Sylvia | 7/24/2007, 7:13 pm EST

Hmmm… not bad….

Isabela | 7/24/2007, 7:29 pm EST

It is really a great song.

Marc | 7/24/2007, 7:30 pm EST

Silverchair is freakin amazing. All there shows sell out and all the albums go staight to #1 in Australia. They keep beating there own record sales with every new album! There just not mainstream and they def left the whole grunge thing behind and have found there own sound. Check out there newly released album if you come across it.

Ariane Fernanda | 7/24/2007, 7:34 pm EST

This is one of my favorite songs, i love it

hear the cd, I am certain that you’ll go to approve

*sorry, pardon my english*

Emily | 7/24/2007, 8:12 pm EST

Good song.

eu na gringa | 7/24/2007, 8:23 pm EST

este cd e muito bom esses caras realmente estão mostrado uma otima musica

deisinha | 7/24/2007, 8:40 pm EST

my favorite band since 97
cause they’re the best

Sarah | 7/24/2007, 9:03 pm EST

Hanson might not be for everyone but they’ve always had solid, quality vocals and a talent for writing and playing music. That can’t be denied. The download song is one of many great songs on this new CD. Hopefully people will check out more songs on The Walk after hearing this one and see why alot of people actually do like their music. Give it a chance.

Rachael | 7/24/2007, 9:26 pm EST

I think it’s sad how people still can’t get over thier MMMBop image. Hanson never stopped growing up since 1997. They did good by writing MMMBop. They were kids when they wrote that song, how many other kids do you know that can write a Billboard top hit?! Hanson is strong and they are in the music business for all the right reasons. They want to make a positive change. They are soooo talented. Their voices are strong, and smooth. Get comforatble people because Hanson is here to stay!

Toilet Trained | 7/24/2007, 10:22 pm EST

I’ve listened to this new song, and I have to be honest. I kind of like MMBop better than this piece of crap. When I listen to this, I sort of hear subliminal messages in the background that says, “We need to make some money. Help resurrect our career. We want to be famous again.”

I’m surprised by the many female commentators on this post as compared to the other posts on this site. Is it because of the cute boys on the page? Or is it really the music that the women like? Yeaahhh, right!

movinginStereo | 7/24/2007, 10:41 pm EST

Catchy bubblegum for today’s teenybopper girls. That’s about it.

Jason | 7/24/2007, 10:53 pm EST

I have their new cd and there are a lot better songs than “been there before”…Can’t judge this album by one song that’s not even the version that’s on the actual cd! This download is an acoustic/live track.

Hoo the Hell Do These Guys .. | 7/24/2007, 11:07 pm EST

Think They Are? Fuckin’ Rush or something?–HH

Leonard | 7/25/2007, 12:10 am EST

this songs is the best of the album to me. small minded people who likes their hip-hop junk trash might not be ready for this, let´s be patient then. Hanson has grown as musicians and you clearly see the lack of poppiness now, it´s more soulful and melodic, recall something like counting crows with more rithym to it…

llllddg | 7/25/2007, 1:24 am EST

I personally could care less if they ever gained another fan. Their current fan base is so solid, they can make a comfortable living for many years to come. All because of their phenomenonal musicianship and devotion to their fanbase. It’s win/win, so who cares about the rest of the world?

Jen | 7/25/2007, 1:36 am EST

“The single is catchy, let’s face it. It’ll probably land on a TV soundtrack or Ford commercial and, in spite of this, the world will keep on spinning for those of us who prefer Tom Waits.”

Hey–I love Tom Waits and I love Hanson. They’re not necessarily mutually exclusive, heh.

This track is good, but better are songs like “Something Going Round” and “Blue Sky”. A little grittier sound.

Sammy | 7/25/2007, 1:56 am EST

Good song, but there are better ones on the album such as “Blue Sky” or “Georgia”.

Alison | 7/25/2007, 1:58 am EST

If you have any sort of taste in music you’ll recognize quality when you hear it. “Been There Before” is a subtle and poignant tip-of-the-hat to Hanson’s influence’s, and to the smooth, soulful sound of the past.

And if you haven’t seen them live, you haven’t lived.

JD | 7/25/2007, 2:10 am EST

I see Hanson as the Beegees of the 21st century. They started out pretty young too.

Kerry | 7/25/2007, 2:21 am EST

Amazing these guys are still making new music after all these years. From this track it sounds like their sound has matured well too. Good for them.

WM | 7/25/2007, 3:35 am EST

I’m looking forward to the album and I like the song. I really love “Great Divide” and it’s message. Take a listen. If you like it… great, if you don’t… that’s fine. I personally can’t wait for the tour. They are fantastic live.

Serenade | 7/25/2007, 5:44 am EST

Good to see Rolling Stone still reckons real music every once in a while. In the realm of humans, there are people who actually prefers to listen to music. Hanson is one of the bands I keep going back to since ‘97 – and they have never disappoint me with each and every release.

oooh.. did I just see a number of testosterone rage in this page? what’s the matter, little boys? Can’t stand to see good looking young men with talents, intellects and success stories gets all the attention? Wishing any one of those hanson men near you so you can be comforted of your masculinity? Some poor little boys really needs to find a way to vent their testo-rage. May I suggest sports? Like, jumping off a bridge, maybe? Might get some ladies’ attention — at your funeral.

Heidi | 7/25/2007, 5:46 am EST

Awesome song!

The chorus is great. :)

Jacob | 7/25/2007, 10:20 am EST

this is actually pretty decent.

Rachael | 7/25/2007, 12:39 pm EST

Great track, Taylor sounds soulful, and fab, I would urge you all to buy the new album

Dan | 7/25/2007, 12:46 pm EST

I like the song, and I like these guys. They continue to prove they are so much more than a pop/boy band kinda thing, they are real singers, musicians, songwriters. They turn out good music, and play real instruments. Thats alot these days.

The Real | 7/25/2007, 1:38 pm EST

I have had sex with all three and I am a man! MMMMMM-Bop!

Crista | 7/25/2007, 3:02 pm EST

Good Job Hanson.
Now that’s called evolution,

In conclusion good track

Craig | 7/25/2007, 6:39 pm EST

Fairly good tune. Wonder if it’ll get the radio play it deserves.

aim95 | 7/25/2007, 7:00 pm EST

Wow.

I went and got this album and…wow. I put it on my mp3 player and its all I’ve been listening to ALL DAY.

I think I have a new favorite.

It’s weird because people have been asking me all day, “What are you listening to?” (It’s head nodding, and toe tapping music. I can’t help it!) And I had to say, Hanson. HANSON.

I got some funny looks but who cares? This is good freaking music.

Laura | 7/25/2007, 7:04 pm EST

I know 3 or 4 straight guys that like hanson & can admit it. They are talented-people need to get over MMMBop because they were very young when that was recorded & who can even carry a tune at 11-never mind writing, creating & putting together a song. That song is about a moment in time & although it may sound corny, immature or what have you, it is actually a rather clever song-rather deep for being written at a young age. I have loved Hanson for 10 plus years & you can bash them all you want but just listen to half of the new album before you do-give it a fair chance-you can hate it but you need to accept it-not listening to it before judging it is simply foolish.

jane | 7/25/2007, 7:29 pm EST

it pisses me off that, even with all of these accolades, hanson still isn’t getting the radio play they so clearly deserve

Kevin | 7/25/2007, 7:51 pm EST

Boy oh Boy has this trio struck some serious gold with this shimmering insta-classic if i do dare to say so, myself. It’s got the hooks, the ladders, the sultry charm that cemented them as one of the stalwarts of all-time music. Good luck to the boys as they grow and develop= I’m addicted to their sweet sweet swweeeet soundz

Bill | 7/25/2007, 10:58 pm EST

I happen to be one of the three or four guys that Laura knows who likes Hanson. I love Hanson. Hands down they are the best band today. I’ve been a huge fan since she introduced them to me in March. Since then I have been to two shows, both of which are amazing. I have been playing music since I was seven years old, and I am one of the pickiest people about the music I listen to. I have no problem whatsoever admitting that Hanson are extremely talented musicians. In fact, it was Taylor’s piano playing that inspired me to start teaching myself. To all those idiots who immediately write them off because of Mmmbop (which is not even a bad song): stop. Try them out and you will like them.

Michelle Badillo | 7/25/2007, 10:58 pm EST

Eh. I didn’t like the song.

Jessica | 7/25/2007, 11:32 pm EST

I have been a fan of Hanson for over 10 years… and I hope more people come to know their music, because it is truly amazing! Enjoy, everyone!

monique | 7/26/2007, 1:08 am EST

been there before the song is good but i don’t understand what taylor is saying could someone please tell me what the song is about
thank you

Serenade | 7/26/2007, 3:06 am EST

Monique,

The song is an ode to their musical roots. Which parts aren’t you clear of? Maybe we can try to elaborate it/them for you. =)

Annie Moeckler | 7/26/2007, 11:41 am EST

I have a Hanson tattoo on my neck. They are so awesome – good to see they are getting recognized on rolling stone. can’t wait for the tour….OMG!!!!!

Annie Moeckler | 7/26/2007, 11:43 am EST

I love this band – I’ve grown up with them – I even have their logo tattooed on the back of my neck. They totally rock and the new album and tour is gonna be amazing!

Lin | 7/26/2007, 5:16 pm EST

“Been there before” is a great tune! But why does RS offer the accoustic version instead of the albumrecording? I want to hear the real deal :)

Lin | 7/26/2007, 5:25 pm EST

Reply to Toilet Trained (!) who said; “I’m surprised by the many female commentators on this post as compared to the other posts on this site. Is it because of the cute boys on the page? Or is it really the music that the women like? Yeaahhh, right!”

Us chicks simply know good music when we hear it ;) Heck, we invented rock n´roll! Where would legends like The Beatles and Elvis ever have gotten if the male audience at that time was as musically impaired as the men of today!?

Alex | 7/26/2007, 5:36 pm EST

Lin if you go to Hanson.net you can listen to the entire album. Just launch the media player.

This version is in their The Walk Acoustic Live DVD.

Thanks Rolling Stone for posting!!

Chris -Kansas City | 7/26/2007, 5:47 pm EST

I’ve been following HANSON since the day MMMbop came out on the radio. What really hooked me, was the 10,000 people they drew to a local mall parking lot just on the other side of the Stateline near my home. IT was a free show except for one (or more) canned food items.

Been There Before is one of the best songs on, “The Walk”. I think it shows their roots and their style. Along with “Been There Before” you must buy the album to hear this song, “Your Illusion”. If you’re still thinking HANSON is MMMBoping around, guess again. This song, will make you blink twice, restart the song, and listen to it over and over again.

Come one, come all! BUY “THE WALK”

Fanson since ‘97

Greg | 7/26/2007, 7:50 pm EST

alright. two worthy cents here from a straight male who is surprised that Hansons still around (i won’t say “mmmboppin” although its tempting)

so i did a google search on them to get an idea for what they are about these days. just read that they left their label a few years back and started their own indie label (3 car garage?) apparently they have a free documentary about that on iTunes. i’m intrigued.

so let me get this straight. they all sing (and sound pretty good, surprisingly), play their own instruments, write all their own music and on top of all this they are running their own record label after they gave the finger to the music industry? jesus. kudos, i must say. i’d never have thought they’d manage this back in the 90’s when they were girls.

actually i am impressed not only with this track (which i’ll admit i find really catchy), but also with the fact that they are doing more than other pop “artists” seem to be doing these days, which is writing their own music, not lip synching, and running their own label to top it off. sounds like they do deserve quite a bit more credit

Bryan | 7/27/2007, 1:26 am EST

Hanson continues to grow and mature as a band, although Entertainment Weekly hit the nail on the head when they said the boys suddenly sound like “Maroon 3.” I like the new album a lot. Like the last album, there’s some filler, but at their best Hanson is as good as any of their competition. If you avoid trying to pigeon-hole them with some sort of “label” and just enjoy the melodies and harmonies, Hanson is the same as they have always been: fun. Kudos to Isaac for continuing to develop as a guitar player; to Taylor reminding us that a) piano can really rock, and b) singing is not necessarily about enunciation but inflection; and hats off to Zac, who is a good drummer and really coming into his own as a singer and songwriter.

Love them or hate them, Hanson is not a novelty. They’re a band — a good one that keeps getting better.

Are You Listening? | 7/27/2007, 3:14 am EST

“I have had sex with all three and I am a man! MMMMMM-Bop!”

Wow. Either you’re an extremely confident heterosexual, or you’re flamboyantly gay. I’m betting on the latter. Call it a hunch.

Honestly, Hanson is the real deal. How many artists out there today can you say write their own music, play their own instruments, and run their own company, all while staying as loyal as possible to their fans? Not too many.

Yeah, I suppose if you would rather follow the daily embarassments of Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan, and Paris Hilton, be my guest, but if you’re up for a listen of something that’s for once decent in today’s media, do yourself a favour and check out “The Walk”. Clear your mind of ‘MMMBop’ and long blonde hair and anything else that’s been keeping you from this band for the last decade (cause that’s how long it’s been, believe it or not) and just listen and let the music speak for itself.

Janet - Kansas City | 7/27/2007, 3:40 am EST

I admire and respect HANSON, their music, and their integrity more than I can express. These guys are incredibly amazing in EVERY way! Superb songwriters, accomplished musicians, a smooth vocal blend with undeniably perfect three part harmony, successful indie label entrepreneurial businessmen, spot on live performers, happy, well adjusted, grounded, grown married family men, funny, witty, intelligent, articulate, down to earth, relatively fan-accessible…and last but not least, breathtakingly beautiful inside and out. I predict that HANSON will have a very long, lucrative, enjoyable, blessed career. They are here to stay..thank god. (That’s no surprise though.) Bono says they are genius. The Village Voice says they are the best straight up rock band in America. I concur wholeheartedly. Go buy the new cd and you won’t be disappointed. Go buy the previous ones as well…like Underneath and The Best of Hanson Live and Electric…those records still rock me out of control! Good solid music never gets old. : )

aim95 | 7/27/2007, 8:54 am EST

Okay, I was actually finally getting tired of endlessly repeating The Walk on my mp3(which I’ve been doing since I picked it up. THX RS for my new fave).

So, I took a chance and got the last indie Underneath and I gotta say that I now disagree with EW. Hanson was apparently doing Maroon 5 songs before M5 was. There are far fewer funky Maroonesq songs on this than The Walk but they are definitely there.

So, everyone is saying get The Walk and I definitely agree but Underneath is worth the cash too. I love getting a CD and not feeling cheated.

Okay, fine. I’ll say it. I love Hanson…er…their music anyway. :)

mnz | 7/27/2007, 10:43 pm EST

Wow, this is great – Is this the new single? It should be!

Janet - Kansas City | 7/28/2007, 10:49 am EST

In response to mnz’s question, I’m not really sure. I thought ‘Go’ was going to be the new single because they’ve already made a fantastic video of it. The last few days since the record release though they’ve been playing ‘Great Divide’ on all the tv shows. Here at Rolling Stone they’ve highlighted this song ‘Been There Before’. Haha..there’s just too many great songs on the record so I don’t really know which will be considered THE single yet.

Love you HANSON..rock on!!

(Oh yeah, I want to reiterate how phenomenal the 2 previous records are..’Underneath’ and ‘The Best of Hanson Live and Electric’..go get them..NOW!)
: )

Anonymous | 8/1/2007, 5:06 pm EST

My daughter dragged me to their concert ten years ago and I’ve been a fan since that day. I’ve enjoyed hearing the evolution of their music and seeing them progress. I’ve taken a lot of ribbing being a 51-year-old fan, but I don’t care…music has no age limits.

My wish would be for everyone to erase all your reconceived notions about them and actually listen to their music. You’re cheating yourself if you don’t give it a chance because it’s solid, good music. I’d also recommend that if you ever have a chance to see them in concert, do so. As someone that has seen a lot of concerts through the years, their concerts are some of the all-time best I’ve ever seen.

And to all the nay-sayers…what’s so bad about ‘Mmmbop?’ A lot of people liked it enough to buy it ten years ago. It’s a song that never fails to make me smile when I hear it. It’s almost like ‘My Boyfriend’s Back.’ It’s a true classic!

Kate | 8/6/2007, 11:59 pm EST

“Been There Before” is one of my favorite tracks on The Walk. I really do find it odd that the free download is the live acoustic version from The Walk Live DVD. I’m not complaining, because I think Hanson is amazing live, and I didn’t have an mp3 of this version yet.

I think this is a great free download… it’s a rare live track for non-fans, and you get to hear the passion of Hanson when they play and sing live. The album version is amazing, as well, so don’t forget about that one!!

this song is incredible. i absolutely adore it. i have the album, and loooove it. although, i was still a fan of them in their mmm bop days. they have come so far and are incredible musicians, lyricists and artists, and they deserve respect for what they do. they’ve come a very long way, and it’s been worth the journey.
with “been there before” no only is it catchy, but you really get yourself caught up in the song. i enjoy the album version, but am a sucker for acoustic versions.

does anyone know if we can save the song to computer or not?

Jeff | 10/26/2007, 5:28 pm EST

Wow. I have to say they’ve definitely got a new sound. It’s not bad.
