Worst Rock Sell-Outs Ever!

7/23/07, 2:25 pm EST

Photo: WilcoOutrage at selling out is back! Beatles fans are pissed about the use of “All You Need Is Love” in a Luvs ad, and this weekend the LA Times ran a piece in which Tom Waits was quoted speaking out (again) against the commercialization of music. We know that it goes both ways these days – the Apples in Stereo, for one, wouldn’t have a career if they weren’t able to sell a song or two – but there are some instances of song placement in ads which fill even our jaded souls with revulsion:

And you?

It stands to reason that many artists face a hard struggle to make a living on thier work in this age of internet downloads and the like.So many performers have taken to giving thier songs to coperate sponsers.I urge these artists to consider the effects of such actions. For one there is the aforementioned association with the commercial itself which causes many who are unfamilar with the songs to either misunderstand the sentiments of the work in it’s pure state or totaly reject the artist period as some bullshiting corperate tool.Next there is the fact that by lending your music to a corperate sponser you are endorsing them to your fans who may then buy thier products and boost thier image reguardless of any pollises these corperations may have.I believe art is what we create to express our truth and often our means of liberation from the brain washing of society.selling out is not a new concept but it has become disgustingly popular. So come on people save yourself and your fans from this shit!Don’t be a whore to the Man!

Hi. Sorry for my english. Happy New Year!!!!!
Good Luck!

Femmes Forever..... | 10/1/2007, 11:57 pm EST

I agree that we shouldn’t be upset at a band for trying to make a living. Unfortunately for the other members of VF I believe they signed off the rights to the music to Gordon Gano so legally he is probably in the right. If the other members were interested in the integrity of the music they shouldn’t have sold out to Gano earlier in their careers.

The use of Wraith Pinned to the Mist and Other Games nearly killed me!

I’m not so against it, but I’m just not used to Target’s remake of Hello Goodbye.

JPerk76 | 9/28/2007, 3:22 pm EST

I grew up in the eighties. Every song I liked as a kid is now on a commercial. After a while it really brings you down.

Doggie Liquids | 9/24/2007, 1:42 pm EST

Does Wendy’s still have the triple decker square burger? Hey now, Super Size me!

DL

Femme Fan | 9/24/2007, 11:59 am EST

Nearly every commercial has a song now instead of a made up jingle. Does it really matter anymore if what is being sold isn’t incredibly offensive? (I know everone has a different idea what would be offensive. For me it’s child porn or dog fighting, not hamburgers!) I dont fault the bands for trying to make a living. It is also mass media exposure some may not otherwise get. I actually bought a Donovan c.d. after I heard the song on a commercial. I don’t even remember anything about the commercial either except it was for a car. So before you get up on your soap box think about what YOU would do to pay the rent. As for me, I will still listen to the Femmes AND buy the new DVD in October. ;)

eldabee | 9/22/2007, 5:46 am EST

IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT IT IS NOT A COMPLETE “SELL-OUT” WHEN THE ENTIRE BAND IS NOT AWARE AND/OR HAS NO KNOWLEDGE THAT ONE OF THE BAND MEMBERS IS GOING BEHIND THEIR BACK TO PROSTITUTE A SONG. LONG LIVE VF!!!

Tim | 9/20/2007, 8:56 pm EST

Did they forget using Elvis songs for Viagra?

Al Rain | 9/14/2007, 11:43 pm EST

When you’re talking about a sell out that goes directly against what they stood for with their song, their band, their legacy, their time on this planet, nothing can, or ever will, compare to The Clash pimping for Jaguar. All the others are just our favourite songs ruined for greed; up until that commercial, London Calling, and The Clash, mattered. By selling out they put the whole thing to a lie.

Eric | 9/10/2007, 11:01 am EST

The rap version of Sweet Home Alabama for Chevrolet is horrible. Its bad enough that TI did a shitty version of the song, but I have to hear it every 5 seconds during a NASCAR race.

Jonathan | 9/5/2007, 12:32 am EST

i cringed the other day when my buddy was listening to led zeppelin. He claimed the zeppelin is a good “driving around the mountain type of band”. That commercial has killed the song.

Dave T. | 8/21/2007, 11:17 am EST

How about you add every single band that’s ever played on MTV to the list. They’re just a 24/7 commercial anyway.

furious.styles | 8/21/2007, 4:00 am EST

i can’t believe no one mentioned Nirvana’s “Breed” on a commercial for a baseball video game. that’s unbelievable to me. or Psychic TV’s “Roman P.” on a car commercial. still can’t get my head around that. one that actually didn’t bother me was Grandaddy’s “Nature Anthem” on that Honda ad. i thought that worked.

Megan J. | 8/17/2007, 8:15 pm EST

Oh, man. I was so mad when I first heard the Wendy’s commercial! Playing one of my favorite songs for a frikkin’ burger!!

I was playing the song on my ipod with my friends and Blister In the Sun came on and one of my friends said “Oh! That’s the Wendy’s song!” I was so pissed at her!! NO, IT’S AN ACTUALL SONG, NOT A JINGLE!!GAHHHH! Corporate sell-outs…

I still love the Femmes, but man, oh, man…

Kim | 8/17/2007, 6:56 pm EST

Who does the song under the current Nissan radio spot?

robert | 8/17/2007, 3:51 pm EST

The chili peppers at disneyland was pretty cool. But a total sell out.

Ola | 8/15/2007, 7:15 pm EST

The Cars, Just What I Needed in that Best Buy commercial.
And it’s sad that the first time I heard the song was in that ad.

Then Rudy Giuliani using The Clash’s “Rudie Can’t Fail” for his campaign music—-of course, that’s not a sell-out in any way. But I was disgusted when I found out about it.

Melomania | 8/10/2007, 12:34 am EST

Actually, the Cirque show idea was started by good ol’ George Harrison before he died. He and the guy who runs the whole production (Cirque Du Soleil) were very good friends.

On another note, I’d have to agree that The Who should not be used for CSI. As much as I enjoy the show, I cringe every time the credits roll.

IlonzisB | 8/3/2007, 10:31 pm EST

Hey Rolling Stone, Buick never ran the ad. Because Morrison said he would smash a Buick on TV if they did.

Nicole | 8/3/2007, 11:36 am EST

“Age of Consent” “Bizarre Love Triangle” “Blue Monday” all by New Order being used in various commercials.
That said, I love the doggie ad with the Magnetic Fields “I think I Need a New Heart” and I also like the Saturn ad using the Walkmen song.

Fortunate Son | 7/30/2007, 8:08 am EST

“Fortunate Son” by CCR was used for a 4th of July Gap commercial. They used the lyrics “Some folks are born made to wave the flag,
Ooh, theyre red, white and blue.” They conveniently left out the “It ain’t me. It ain’t me. I ain’t no fortunate son.” It’s a very anti-4th of July song.

wilko | 7/30/2007, 12:06 am EST

The Beach Boys “Wouldnt it be Nice” used in dire chocolate commercials. Also in lottery ad.

The Beach Boys “Surfin’Safari” Burger King ad from 80s

Moby- his entire career

best comment ever lmao!well the fact that the beatles are sellouts they sold out the rough biker image and became tidy clean innocent boys to get big in the first place,at least most bands started out with the right attenion

my sellout pink floyd-the wall rock opera my ass most over rated load of shit ever thank got another brick in the wall is just a pre 80’s cheese anthem and not one of there good songs other wise i be pissd at the amount of times thats used

George Myers | 7/29/2007, 9:27 am EST

The music industry using Jim Croce’s “Leroy Brown” version about Chicago instead of New York City as it was recorded (I have the tape).

Slammerworm | 7/29/2007, 1:56 am EST

In NZ there was an ad in the 1970s for Suzuki which featured Steppewolf’s ‘Born To Be Wild’. It went ‘..Born To Be Wiiilllld, SUZUKI!’ This was shameful.

Back in the Day | 7/28/2007, 11:50 pm EST

Melanie Safkas’ “Look What They’ve Done to My Song” was about the commercialization of music. It turned up again the in the 1980’s as “Look what they’ve done to oatmeal.”

Then there was that car commercial that used the Guess Who’s “American Woman.” Another case, perhaps, of some ad agency creative director remembering the title but not the lyrics.

justin | 7/28/2007, 4:58 pm EST

“Summer” by mogwai in a levi’s commercial

Oddjob | 7/28/2007, 10:14 am EST

AHA, for you to say that I have to assume you didn’t actually SEE the Beatles Vegas show, it really is amazing. And totally worthy of the music it’s based around.

Rosie | 7/28/2007, 1:53 am EST

kudos to Coldplay for refusing to have their songs used in an ad…i think coldplay is a total rip-off of U2, but still.
‘i’m in love with my car’ by queen was used in a jaguar ad. that one doesn’t bug me as much as most of the others though, wasn’t we will rock you or something like that used in a pepsi commercial?

marchoftheroses | 7/28/2007, 1:32 am EST

i saw a comcast cable commercial with a close rip-off of “smells like teen spirit”, also when wwf smackdown’s theme song was “the beautiful people”. pretty low for both corporation and artist. oh well, keep on L-I-V-I-N.

AHA | 7/27/2007, 9:36 pm EST

I believe we can thank Sony for the misuse of The Beatle songs. Jackson had to trade off a crap load of that stuff when he was in financial difficulties due to legal problems. McCartney wouldn’t do that to his own songs but he would to any of the others that he owns. He is in it for the money just like everyone else. Just look at The Beatles Love fiasco with cirque de solei. What a load of crap.

Melomania | 7/27/2007, 8:11 pm EST

The sad thing about the “All you need is Luvs” commercial and other Beatles sell-outs, is that the remaining Beatles aren’t even selling themselves out. Micheal Jackson owns most of the Beatles’ catalog, and he’s using the songs for everything thing they opposed.

Anonymous | 7/27/2007, 9:47 am EST

The Beatles, would be worst…

But, Jim Morrison called Buick and threatened to have a Buick smashed with a sledgehammer on a TV show should the (presumably ready) commercial be aired.

Jeff | 7/25/2007, 6:32 pm EST

Spoon, one of my favorite bands, using “I turn my camera on” for Jaguars…well, at least they’re classy sellouts!

BFO | 7/25/2007, 2:53 pm EST

Target abusing the Beatles Hello Goodbye (and changing it to Hello, Good Buy!)

Ugh.

m.v.m. | 7/25/2007, 2:12 pm EST

The New Pornographers’ “The Bleeding Heart Show” for University of Phoenix. Though the “Lust For Life” cruise ads still give me pause, even years after they started.

I think Peter Bjorn & John’s “Writer’s Block” album is the new “Play.” I’m pretty sure three of those songs have sold for commercials thus far.

Whoops. I forgot about The Dandy Warhols and some car ad. Saturn?

BR | 7/25/2007, 1:23 pm EST

THE WHO!! Car companies, TV shows, etc. Pete certainly doesn’t need the money…WTF?

Mule | 7/25/2007, 1:12 pm EST

Sly Stone’s “Higher” being used in an AT&T commercial. Of course, now his “Dance To The Music” is known to a generation of kids as that “Shrek” song, but “Higher” was a profound statement at Woodstock and is definitely of its time. Shame.

Mitchapalooza | 7/25/2007, 12:57 pm EST

…pretty sure that a handful of tunes from Wilco’s new album are ALL OVER Volkswagon commercials.

I’ll go with Of Montreal. But there was something comforting and serene about when they gave “Everyday Feels Like Sunday” to Nasdaq.

Those Ford “Music Videos” that the American Idol contestants did last season were a total slaughter of music. They started with Modest Mouse’s “Float On” (which was offensive enough) and then it got worse when they covered everything from U2 to the Rolling Stones to even The Clash.

Wendy’s used “Blister In The Sun” for an ad ?!!

Wow, Violent Femmes are true heroes.
Good thing Wendy’s did not know what this song was about. Gordon Gano and pals pulled up one heck of a joke, and they got paid for it. That’s beautiful.

Iggy Pop in a family cruise ad. What was Carnival thinking using “Lust For Life”?

Peter | 7/24/2007, 5:13 pm EST

It’s been mentioned already, but I must say “Revolution” by the Beatles being used to sell Nike crap is the worst of all-time.

Nike also used “Bittersweet Symphony” in an advertisement.

In both cases the songs had 100% completely opposite messages to the crap being sold.

The Pogues’ “Sunny Side of the Street” for Cadillac is great. Especially the line “with a heart full of hate and a lust for vomit.” Cadillac must be trying to get puking punkers to buy their cars.

I’m not saying it’s right but, artists are almost forced to do this. With all the downloading its one of the only ways to make money on their songs. I am definitely not crying any tears for Sir Paul. Sincerely, Same as it ever was–(RB)

JP | 7/23/2007, 5:56 pm EST

I’m split on selling songs to hock products & services. It’s disappointing to hear a song that you really like in the past used in a commercial. Ex: “Just Want I Needed” & “Rock And Roll”

On the other hand, given the narrow playlist of radio stations & music television networks and slumping record sales. I completely support a new artist/band selling their songs to get exposure through commercials.

Honestly, I’m always flipping channels and turning on the mute button during commercials anyway. So, I don’t catch very many commercials.

The “All You Need Is Luvs” campaign breaks my heart, and I’m sure Paul’s & Ringo’s too. The only consolation for me is the knowledge that the Beatles themselves never owned these copyrights, and therefore we know it’s not them who sold out so shamelessly. In fact it was probably Michael Jackson.

Taylor Franklin | 7/23/2007, 3:26 pm EST

Flaming Lips “Do You Realize” for Intell? I think. That song has so much meaning and to take those 3 words out of context for a commerical still makes me feel gross inside. Great song though.

Wrober | 7/23/2007, 3:21 pm EST

Taco’s classic “Puttin’ on the Ritz” that plays on the local Salvation Army store commercials. And Winger’s “Seventeen” to peddle underage girls on Tommy Wang’s Chinese massage parlor commercial.

Well, it really all goes back to Eric Clapton doing the slowed down version of “after midnight” for some beer commercial - that’s what prompted Niel Young’s “This Note’s for You.”

Lou Reed didn’t help matters with his walk on the wild side ad for Honda scooters. But as a whole, no act is more culpable than the Rolling Stones. There are just too many examples to list.

bias | 7/23/2007, 2:56 pm EST

thankfully I heard ‘Rock and Roll’ on the album before I heard it on those infernal car commercials. I wasn’t so fortunate with songs like ‘we are the champions’ by Queen. The mighty ducks got me first so now I just can’t really enjoy that song like I aught to.
