Slash Returns Stolen Guitar to Hard Rock Cafe with Much Pomp and Circumstance

7/23/07, 9:27 am EST

Photo: SlashOfficials at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas got quite the surprise during a recent ceremony honoring Velvet Revolver (and former Guns ‘N Roses) guitarist Slash. At the event on July 14, Slash presented the Hard Rock with a guitar he had taken from its Florida cafe years ago explaining, “I stole that from the Hard Rock in Orlando. It was in the dressing room. I didn’t know what it was doing there, so I took it. . . So I’ve had it all these years and been playing it.” What prompted him to finally ‘fess up? “I thought what better way to honor the Hard Rock for honoring me than to give it back, sort of,” Slash said. Coming clean didn’t affect why he was being honored in the first place – the permanent memorabilia case of all things Slash still stands at the Hard Rock Hotel in Vegas.

A guitar player stealing a guitar? What kind of total putz does that? I suppose it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. I guess the word “mediocrity” catagorizes more than just his playing.

jungleland | 7/23/2007, 10:37 am EST

Whose guitar was it originally? I think Slash should have to do PSA’s for shoplifting

Aaron | 7/23/2007, 11:00 am EST

Banjo, why steal? Because that’s what DRUNKS do, when they aren’t driving cars into swimming pools. How can anyone be surprised at a guy who spent the late 80s carrying a bottle of Jack Daniels did a few things that aren’t on the up and up? He was in a band with a wife beater (Axl) and a guy whose pancreas was combustible (Duff). A stolen guitar isn’t really that bad.

Hunter | 7/23/2007, 11:02 am EST

Weird.
What kind of guitar was it?
Let me just say weird again.

Gnrfan | 7/23/2007, 11:09 am EST

Slash is one of the greatest guitarists of the last thirty years. The guy that said mediocrity sums him up just doesn’t get it. Kudos to him for coming clean

Gary D. Mucho | 7/23/2007, 11:35 am EST

A thief is a thief. I wish someone would steal his top hat already.

NYC Nate | 7/23/2007, 11:37 am EST

It just goes to show how pussy rock-n-roll fans have gotten. Fuck all the tsk-tsk-ing. Rock-n-roll was built on rebellion and on not doing things “by the book”. The second that rockers start doing things by the book is when the terrorists (and hip-hop) have finally won.

Holly | 7/23/2007, 11:58 am EST

Slash fuckin rocks.

Babba Booey | 7/23/2007, 12:18 pm EST

It kind of makes me wonder what if the Hard Rock did not throw a ceremony honoring Slash if he would have then returned the guitar? Probably would’ve kept it if there were no ceremony.

Buckethead | 7/23/2007, 12:49 pm EST

Way to make it right, Slash!

B. Breeg | 7/23/2007, 1:09 pm EST

Godamn Slash is fucking rad.

John-boy | 7/23/2007, 1:10 pm EST

Awesome. I think the guitar was better suited to be in the hands of Slash onstage, backstage or in studio than hidden on some dressing room wall anyway. Maybe now it’s got enough history to actually be displayed.

skinnydawg | 7/23/2007, 1:11 pm EST

what a guilty weenie. i wonder what else he’s ripped off over the years.

B. Breeg | 7/23/2007, 1:11 pm EST

BTW, banjo if you think slash’s guitar playing is sub-par that means two things:
1. You obviously don’t play guitar.

2. You don’t like and/or understand what good music is. Now go put your new Linkin Park Cd back in your stereo.

Anthony Pittarelli | 7/23/2007, 1:20 pm EST

oh well you live and you learn, at least he gave it back. now someone at hard rock gets a free les paul

You're gay | 7/23/2007, 1:43 pm EST

Gary D Mucho-
Somebody already did and he got it back smartass. Go back to church and renew some of those morals

Slash is the last actively playing guitar god. Without him good old rock n’ roll would’ve died amongst glam bands and again with the emo numetal scenesters

Freddy Mercury | 7/23/2007, 1:50 pm EST

Slash Rocks. Anyone who says his playing is mediocre hasn’t got a clue about guitar playing.

Big Ass Ugly Bald Guy | 7/23/2007, 1:55 pm EST

Pretty slow news day, eh Rolling Stone?

Kevin | 7/23/2007, 2:03 pm EST

Slash kicks ass

justified | 7/23/2007, 2:09 pm EST

Yea! He should be allowed to steal anything because he can play a musical instrument very very well! We should even let him shoot kids for fun! Its being a rebel man, its cool! Let them steal things from others otherwise terrorists win! /sarcasm

Slash is a petty thief. Nothing bad ass about it.

axle | 7/23/2007, 2:22 pm EST

The Incredible Hulk | 7/23/2007, 2:26 pm EST

What is this that Hulk read? Slash return guitar? Hulk think Slash become puny and weak! If Hulk have guitar, Hulk no return to Hard Rock. Hulk take guitar and smash! Then go to ceremony, and smash Hard Rock Hotel!

Jamell | 7/23/2007, 2:41 pm EST

Slash kicks many asses.

sy | 7/23/2007, 2:45 pm EST

he hoped if he got a better guitar his playin would get better, oops it didnt, retune ur guitar…

jerry g | 7/23/2007, 2:52 pm EST

Happy Birthday, Slash! (7/23/65)

Seth | 7/23/2007, 3:08 pm EST

Hey, I think we all would’ve done the same thing! ;P

twistedbacchus | 7/23/2007, 3:34 pm EST

I’m inclined to agree with Babba Booey! If the Hard Rock Cafe hadn’t thrown a ceremony honoring him, I don’t think he would have returned the guitar! Just another cheap publicity stunt!

miker | 7/23/2007, 4:43 pm EST

the Sex Pistols did the same thing ! what’s a poor boy gonna do ?

CaraElizabeth | 7/23/2007, 11:57 pm EST

he looks like he needs some chapstick in that picture

Gary | 7/24/2007, 11:24 am EST

To you’re gay,

You condone theft and tell me to renew morals. How about I kick your ass and renew your anal pore?

J | 7/24/2007, 11:58 am EST

“Slash is the last actively playing guitar god”

ummm, do you even play guitar? There are still plenty of guitar gods around. Listen to Malmsteen, Satriani, Vai, Buckethead, Gilbert, i could go on but i hope you get the idea

twistingbacchus | 7/24/2007, 4:17 pm EST

I agree with Babba Booey. If the Hard rock Cafe hadn’t thrown that honor ceremony for Slash I seriously doubt if he would have returned that guitar he ripped off! This was just another cheap publicity stunt!!

The Hard Rock Should Feel | 7/24/2007, 11:47 pm EST

HONORED that Slash stole one of their guitars. Oh, fuck it, I forgot. ROCK IS DEAD! –HH

KBH141 | 7/25/2007, 11:16 am EST

Buckethead isn’t a guitar god…just a dousche bag

bodhi3734 | 7/31/2007, 3:53 pm EST

all you ass clowns are a fucking disgrace to rock. Slash did what rockers have been doing for ages, taking what they want when they want it and showing everyone they can. what is this shit about rock ‘gods’ still being around? are you all bent? of course they are but their nothing to your jimmy page or eric clapton. do any of you even know rock music stems from the blues…? the only one in music today meeting any previous standard of absolutely mesmerizing guitar riffs and solos is Jack White, he my friends is today’s incarnate of a rock god. Mark My Mother-fucking words all you computer geek-ass nerds sitting here talking about rock like you know. Long live Slash and his rocker antics. you wanna shit talk him do your history. this guy would come to photo shoots so drunk that they would hire a guy to hold him up, he can do what he wants till he dies. Look at Keith Richards, you fucking twinks; that man has been in and out of rehab forever and what happened this year? Oh he got a gig in ‘Pirates.’ You all need to stop being so cynical like little kids. Oh no, Slash (a fucking rock god) borrowed a guitar from history to play some velvet revolver music, oh my god he is such a sinner, he gave it back you whiny fucks. And by the way even if he had never given it back until the day he died, it would have still found its way back to hard rock cafe, with much of Slash’s stuff and been one of those funny stories in rock history.

Richard Thompson | 8/16/2007, 6:14 pm EST

Nicely said….I agree completely!
