According to reports in many reputable media outlets, bidding for a pair of John Lennon’s gold wire-rimmed glasses at the music memorabilia site 991.com has reached $1.5 million. If this is true, this would be the most money ever spent on a rock artifact, surpassing the record of $959,500 in 2004 for Eric Clapton’s guitar “Blackie.” Needless to say, we’re skeptical: the auction house It’s Only Rock and Roll had a pair of Lennon granny glasses for sale earlier month that had an estimated value of $30,000-$50,000. Nobody purchased them.
