James Hetfield Calls Metallica’s St. Anger “A Purge”

7/20/07, 9:07 am EST

metallicaMetallica frontman James Hetfield says he now regards 2003’s St. Anger as “more of a statement than Metallica music that [the band enjoys] playing live,” adding, “It was more of a purge, just getting that shit out of me, as a catalyst for the next chapter of Metallica.” So we can assume the making of the group’s forthcoming LP is totally different? Definitely. “With St. Anger, it became so open-minded that it became unfocused. This time around, there’s a lot of ‘Sorry, it’s not good enough.’ We’re aiming for excellence.” Drummer Lars Ulrich expressed similar sentiments recently when discussing the new record’s sound. The album is expected to drop early next year.

A short piece about Metallica? All right, here come the “Metallica sucks ever since Cliff died” comments.

not to hate on ya RS, but uhh i vaguely recall you giving st. anger 4 stars, wanna defend that er….

no?

ok.

metalhed | 7/20/2007, 9:42 am EST

Seems they’re just acknowledging what fans knew ever since St. Anger hit record stores. That it was garbage. Just like the next album will be. They’ve sucked for too long now to ever go back.

zooloo | 7/20/2007, 9:42 am EST

I hope the new album will be as good as the others especially Master Of Puppets

St. Anger had its obvious shortcomings, but it also had a few bright spots.

However, I’ll defend Load and Reload as fantastic albums. Different from the rest of their catalogue? Definitely. But most of those songs were just so damn good. “Fixxxer” and “Wasting My Hate” rock your houses.

I happened to like St Anger. I love the drum sound, particularly on the title track. I got on the Metallica bandwagon in 84 and have no problem with the direction they have have taken the band. If you haven’t liked anything they have done since 85, then you aren’t a fan.

Mario Kart | 7/20/2007, 10:16 am EST

Even though I already think they’ve jumped the shark, I’m willing to see what’s up next…
It’d be refreshing to see a tight 8-10 track album again- without having to lean on radio friendly garbage.
I really think their music is one of the prime gauges of the industry- aka if it sucks, ppl will look back on it for years

Matt Whitehead | 7/20/2007, 10:21 am EST

Metallica became irrelevant when they went after the fans who downloaded their songs on Napster. I still have the letter sent to me on their behalf, kicking me off Napster and threatening possible legal action. Metallica is a dinosaur that is already extinct.

Dave M. | 7/20/2007, 10:23 am EST

Metallica sucks ever since Cliff died.

And they’re bullies and just mean too. I mean, I know I puked all over James’ favorite Les Paul, and then poked a hole in, and fucked Lars favorite snare, but gosh, can’t people just recommend A.A. or something, instead of kicking a guy out of the band just before they become obscenely popular and rich?

Now I’m going to go cry in my pillow.

I prefer Black Album and Load to the early or post re-load stuff (so I guess I am not a hardcore fan) I thought St. Anger was very short on melody.

Unforgiven II
Enter Sandman

I guess I want more of the same

Diarrhea Soup | 7/20/2007, 11:05 am EST

Details of the new album has already been leaked onto the internet and it will be totally different from “St. Anger” or anything else they put out. The new album is going to be called “Pretty Little Flowers” and will feature a symphony orchestra and some banjo and harmonica playing. Song titles will include: “Feed The Homeless”; “Bursting With Love”; “Angry No More”; “Oh My Jesus”; “Highway To My Heart”; “Stop The Violence” and they will also do a cover version of the Bee Gees song “Stayin’ Alive”. I can’t wait!

Phil Anselmo | 7/20/2007, 11:07 am EST

Metallica has lost its thunder. They are what we call in the biz corporate rock. If you want real authentic rock buy Down Nola or any Pantera CD. Im not saying Metallica sucks but they are old and they will never recapture what they had. So to the fans of Metallica dont get your hopes up. Its 2007 not 1987.

No doubt St. Anger wasn’t everyone’s cup’o tea, but it was still better than a lot of the packaged, cookie- cutter, template driven music that is spoon fed to us as being “critically-acclaimed”. Give Metallica props for going out there and trying something different, hell they’ve earned the right! In order to know what will work, you need to know exactly what won’t work.

The only thing that is relevant is the here and the now. It’s been 20+ years since Kill’em All and Cliff. It’s time to move on and evolve… obviously the band has, otherwise we would not be having this discussion.

One other thing, Metallica went after Napster not because people were downloading 20 year old songs but rather; unreleased material which was stolen from recording sessions of St. Anger.

Alex | 7/20/2007, 11:23 am EST

Hell yeah!

The show in Moscow was great! We’re waiting for 16 long years… And we got it! 2,5 hours of rock’n'roll!!!
There were tears in my eyes…

And i’m waiting for the new album!

Rock on!

Metal Pipe Up My Ass | 7/20/2007, 11:37 am EST

There’s something about that quote “the forthcoming LP is totally different” which scares me and leaves me to believe that we can expect some wimpy shit on the new album.

Any Given Tuesday | 7/20/2007, 11:57 am EST

So you’re telling me fans spent $13.99 on a purge, not a real record?

No. 1 Metallica Fan | 7/20/2007, 12:02 pm EST

Yeah!! Metallica!! Wooo-hooo! I can’t wait for the new album to come out! Power to the metal! Yeahhh! I would suck all their dicks if they’d let me too! Yeah!! Metallica!! Bang your head!! Thrash till death!! Yeaaahhh! Metallica!! I’m creaming my pants right now! Yeah! Metallica!!

Jeff "The Dude" Lebowski | 7/20/2007, 12:08 pm EST

Metallica is a bunch of assholes.

Ardie | 7/20/2007, 12:12 pm EST

To the fans like myself, better set our hopes low,…
then get blown away when the LP comes out.
And I hope this happens, or we get the same middle aged Metallica stuffs all over again. I mean, the lyrics and all, man…

Godzilla | 7/20/2007, 12:15 pm EST

Metallica 应该退休和正义授予它。他们不再是同样带。与所有性交您也是。

poserhater | 7/20/2007, 12:19 pm EST

I bugged out halfway through Load. St. Anger was indeed a messy piece of shit. Saying “The next one’s gonna be bigger/better” is really just them saying “Please give us ANOTHER chance.” I’ll reserve my judgement until I actually here the new shit.

Cliff B. | 7/20/2007, 12:35 pm EST

Does anybody really care anymore?
I know that I’m dead, but I’ve been watching.
They have been mailing it in for about 10 years now.
Too much money.
Too many drugs.
Too much Lars.
It’s just fucking music… it ‘aint “important” as some in the group would lead you to believe.
They need to put down the cigars and expensive wine pick up a goddamn guitar and rock balls.
They need to stop rehabbing themselves and rehab the music.
By the way, I have formed a band up here (or wherever I am) with Freddy Mercury, Jimi Hendrix and John Bonham. We call ourselves “The Hateful Dead”.
Our first album drops August 28th.
- Cliff

metalhead | 7/20/2007, 12:41 pm EST

Face it they will NEVER top Master Of Puppets our anything else from their early catalog. Those early albums are timeless and will never be matched.St Anger was their best effort since …And Justice For All
LONG LIVE MASTODON!!!!!!!

eballad | 7/20/2007, 12:54 pm EST

Who? Oh, yeah, those jholes have sucked for what at least a decade now. ‘And Justice’ was the last good release they had. Everything since should have been titled ‘just give us your money’. I wouldn’t give them the lint in my pocket … for the trash they now seem to think is music.

MAN | 7/20/2007, 1:04 pm EST

thanks james….im glad I spent 13.95 on a purge. it woulda been nice to to know that before you released it you sleezy shithead. let us know next time your taking a shit on a whim so we wont dig through it looking in vain for something worthwhile

Matt | 7/20/2007, 1:38 pm EST

People who bitch about the Napster thing apparently can’t understand that piracy is fucking ILLEGAL. If I was in the band’s place, I’d have done the same thing. Being able to download unreleased, *unfinished* material isn’t right.

mike | 7/20/2007, 1:41 pm EST

it’s about time they admit that album sucked…i wonder how long it will be before he admits that everything they’ve done since the 80’s was “a purge”

Lazarus C. Kauffman | 7/20/2007, 1:56 pm EST

Stop judging them for their past. The new stuff could be great. How could any of you possibly know?
Load is a great piece of music. Sure, it’s no Master of Puppets, but bands have to grow and change. St. Anger was dissapointing, but at least they had the guts to try something new.

Last I checked, most of you can’t play a guitar like Hetfield of Hammet. Who are you to judge?

Master of Vomit | 7/20/2007, 2:25 pm EST

So St. Anger was nothing but a purge of shit out of their system. How do we know that the next album will also be a purge….a purge of our money out of our wallets?

Cream of Broccoli | 7/20/2007, 2:29 pm EST

I be liking Metallica a lot. I is big fan of them. I do head banging when I listen to their music and it make me jump up and down. I like to listen to the metal music and Metallica play the metal music. They is good! I am number 1 fan of them in my country! They is like a explosion when they play and all the people they go crazy for Metallica. We are all big metal fans.

St Hubbins | 7/20/2007, 2:30 pm EST

The highlight of Live Earth was the Spinal Tap reunion…featuring Hetfield in their back-up band.

Mettalica has become Spinal Tap.

Hetfield said ““It was more of a purge, just getting that shit out of me, as a catalyst for the next chapter of Metallica.”
I think “shit” is the keyword in that sentence.

Rob | 7/20/2007, 2:35 pm EST

I like the Pet Shop boys way better than Metallica.

Pope Benedict XVI | 7/20/2007, 2:38 pm EST

Who is this St. Anger that I do not know about and what worthy deeds and spiritual healings has this St. Anger performed? I have no record of this saint. It is a blasphemy to impersonate. Praise be to Jesus.

Jughead | 7/20/2007, 2:41 pm EST

That picture of Hetfield above sure looks as if someone is squeezing his balls and he’s in agony with the way he’s got his mouth wide open like that.

Alex | 7/20/2007, 2:57 pm EST

Cliff-

I’d buy the hell out of your album. Should I look for it at Best Buy or just the vast nether regions of eternity? I’d roadtrip to the vast nether regions of eternity for a supergroup of that caliber.

Hulk hope next album have more power and keep Hulk green! Hulk like to smash when listen to old Metallica! Hulk like old Metallica. Hulk like to smash!

Big Fat Bald Guy | 7/20/2007, 4:03 pm EST

I hear the reason Metallica is coming out with a new album is because they new to raise some cash to buy some new beach homes and get a new Mercedes and Lexus. They have families to support and kids to raise so the cash will come in handy. Kids will buy any piece of crap that comes out nowadays.

Chucky | 7/20/2007, 4:31 pm EST

Not sure why there are so many haters out there. Metallica still kicks ass over the majority of rock these days. I for one didn’t mind St. Anger. I wasn’t jumping on the “Metallica Sells outs” bandwagon, so I actually paid attention to the music. Most of you probably haven’t even heard the album all the way through, yet still flaunt your pointless opinions. Closed minds should have closed mouths.
Anyways, the new album will be good stuff.

Humina humina | 7/20/2007, 4:34 pm EST

Is it me, or is James trying to join ZZ top?

B. Breeg | 7/20/2007, 5:36 pm EST

I love metallica, but the last few albums have been lack luster. Early stuff is great and all the way up to the black album, which is totally different, but a fantastic album nonetheless. The problems began with Load, which had some decent songs, but I think all of us felt metallica starting to go in the wrong direction. Reload=suck. I didn’t mind st. anger some of the songs are good, but the whole album feels like they just took some guitar riffs and mashed them together into songs (which by the way, is how most of the album WAS actually done). However, I believe there is hope on the horizon. Rick Rubin is on the new album so that makes me feel good and I think we are going to find a more classic metallica sound on the new album that we have all wanted for so long. There downfall was trying to stay with the musical trends and it took them away from what they do best.

Kiggy | 7/20/2007, 5:39 pm EST

Leave it be…if not for Metallica, there wouldn’t be the shit that’s out now…EVERYTHING’S derivitive…I still have my copy of Garage Days Re-Revisited–you know, not that long ago when rap wasn’t blended with “metal” Listen to whatever gives you shits and giggles…fuckin’ haters playing the old “sellout” card…

T-Nasty | 7/20/2007, 5:51 pm EST

Did they get Hetfield to come into the studio and cry with them?

Aaron D. | 7/20/2007, 7:35 pm EST

I won’t lie, I like all of Metallica’s albums. St. Anger wasn’t perfect, but the way Hetfield emoted on that album was completely real. They’ve never dug that deep, and probably won’t again.

Actually, the only thing I didn’t like about it were the damn drums, that stupid PING that the snare drum made.

Also, if they just kept making Puppets over and over, nobody would still be talking about them. If I wanted to listen to a band that made the same album repeatedly, I’d be in love with AC/DC.

wheelersdealer@gmail | 7/20/2007, 8:10 pm EST

i cant believe i just sold my ;ride the lightning; and st anger 4 crack……………..

Ryan | 7/20/2007, 8:18 pm EST

I really get sick of these psuedo Metallica and psuedo-metal fans. This moronic “Metallica sold out” crap makes zero sense and needs to stop. Why did they sell out? Because they cut their hair and stopped doing speed/thrash metal? That genre of music died with grunge and they would’ve too. Why else to people say they sold out? The Napster thing. Napster is a horribly wrong and immoral and they were right for standing up for it. People just want to be lazy and get things for free instead of living an honest life. There is absolutely zero selling out going on. If you ridiculous Metallica haters don’t like Metallica, JUST SHUT UP ALREADY. The real fans don’t want you anyway. And we don’t want to hear you spout of pointless garbage like any of us give a crap about what you think.

As for the new stuff, I can’t wait. St. Anger could’ve been great but the obnoxious snare/garage sound and zero guitar solo’s kept it from greatness. I can’t wait to hear the new stuff. Metallica is metal!

Dave I never sold out Mustaine | 7/20/2007, 11:24 pm EST

There is a new Metallica album out, its called United Abominations. I just love how Dave Mustaine gets kicked out of Metallica, picks himself up from stone cold rock bottom, manages to create his own group, and while Metallica eventually sold out and began to make horrid music, Mustaine won the fight and continued to make man made music through the 90’s and well into the 2000’s. All bow down to Mustaine, he has ultimately won the battle and the war, Dave Mustaine for President.

I totally agree with the Metallica haters. Asking people to pay for your work is so passé. I’m sure all of you, like me, work for free, just as Metallica should. And, to top it off, they’re popular….which really pisses me off! How dare they write songs that more than 6000 people like. How dare they!

Metallica, if you’re reading this, we purists would really appreciate it if you’d start writing crappy music again and then allow us to download it for free over the internet. Then you’ll be REAL artists!!!

Two words: Metallica SUCKS! James and co. should retire ASAP.

cedric the critic | 7/22/2007, 9:13 am EST

As they grow old, the anguish and rage that they feel, which made them popular by the way, diminishes. Hetfield and Ulrich should be retiring soon and be satisfied of taking care of their grandkids.

Jim | 7/22/2007, 12:03 pm EST

All I can say is Load and Reload should never have been made and I can see why Jason would wrather play Voivod than that mid 90’s embarassment.St Anger gave us a little more of what a Metallica looks for more than Unforgiven 2.

Dude, it is normal for Metallica to become weak at this stage of the game. Plus, after the Black album, they had a very big taste of wealth that has since become their number one priority. And why not. Should rappers be the only ones making the Benjamins? And for those that think Megadeth never tried that route should take a listen to Rust in Piece and then Euthanasia. Boring, predictable and without Friedman totally devoid of panache. All we have left is to listen to Mustaine’s god aweful voice. I hate his singing.

Long time Metallica fan here (25-years) as well as Tool, Slayer, etc… James really didn’t have to come out and officially state that St. Anger was a purge, that was very evident from the first listen in my opinion. Did any of you actually think that was a focussed studio record? I’m glad they got all of that shit out of them so they can get back to making quality records. It’s also about time that Newstead and Bob Rock are gone – Newstead is probably the weakest rock/ metal basist I’ve ever heard. Isn’t he in some realy TV show now? Maybe he can hook up with Megadeth. There’s no reason why he was on a short leash. Trujillo fits in with Metallica perfectly. What the hell is a sell-out anyway? If becoming the biggest rock/ metal band in the world and making millions at the same time is selling out, then I guess they’re a sellout. I guess they should apologize, give all of their money away, and go back to being a true metal band. I’m sure Dave Mustaine or the dudes from Slayer are sticking to their “metal roots” and turning down all of the cash thrown at them to release another medicore and predictable Megadeth or Slayer records. Other than a song or two, when was the last time Megadeth or Slayer released a great album? It’s been a while. Comparing Mustaine with Metallica is moronic. I give him props for creating his own band and music, but his records will never reach the status of some of Metallica’s best records. Have any of you Metallica haters seen them live lately? They still put on a great show playing mostly classics from Lightning, Puppets, and Justice. If you don’t like there new music anymore then fine, everybody is entitled to their own music choices. If your reasoning is because you consider them a sellout, or fighting against downloading piracy, or even more infantile, cutting their hair, then I recommend growing up a little and getting a life.

I can’t wait for the new Met record. Hell yeah St. Anger was a purge. Did any of you think that was a focussed studio record? They had to “purge” out all of the shit that Newstead and Bob Rock created over the past 15-years. I guess James had some issues he needed to get out as well so now he can back to work. Thank god Newstead and Rock are finally gone! Newstead is the weakest rock/ metal bassist I’ve ever heard – absolutely horrible. Maybe Megadeath will pick him up? Mustaine makes the most boring and predictable records and Newstead’s bass playing is just as boring and predictable so those two are a perfect fit! They can change the band name to Metallica’s Rejects and Bob Rock can produce – sweet! I guess most of you Met haters like boring and predictable records so I guess this would be perfect for you. Megadeth losers!

I can’t wait for the new Met record. Hell yeah St. Anger was a purge. Did anybody think that was a focussed studio record? Come-on! I’m so glad Newstead and Bob Rock are finally gone. It’s no reason James had to purge out all of the shit those two created for the past 15-years. Newstead is the worst rock/ metal bassist I’ve ever heard! Maybe Megadeth will pick him up. Mustaine makes the most predictable crappy records on the planet so Newstead would fit in perfect. Bob Rock can produce and they can even change the band name to Metallica’s Rejects. All of you Met haters out there seem to love predictable music so they would be your new “metal” band! Meanwhile Metallica will continue to be the biggest rock/ metal band of our generation selling millions of records and sell-out shows.

I think Metallica should try to lighten up. The Load era was a vital transitioning period for them, but then they turned back around and got heavier again. Pearl Jam has been around so long because they knew they couldn’t rock so hard when they got older. It’s not like the songs are worse when they’re not heavy. I don’t like to see old people playing thrash metal.

why dont they just give up already? obviously its not fun anymore for them. that dude needs to stop whining.

Melanie | 7/24/2007, 1:44 pm EST

Instead of going on about the past and trying to predict the future, can’t you all just wait until the new record comes out? I feel sorry for those whose ranting sound as if their entire circles around Metallica and who probably spend too much time in front of their computer. Why don’t you switch off your computer for once and go and get a life?

Dyers' Eve | 7/24/2007, 1:48 pm EST

Great advice Melanie – especially from somebody whose responding to this blog like the rest of us. Take you own advice and piss-off!

Terrible spelling, DE – and greetings from someone whose native language is not English. Take my pity and get a life, poor thing.

Metallica are done.. Do yourself a favor and buy Megadeth’s new album.. Atleast Dave Mustaine continues to release quality Metal.

So sorry about missing the letter ‘r’ – I can see how that would confuse you. You’re obviously sexually frustrated. No more opinions on the topic at hand? Let me ask you a question – shut up! I’ve listened to the latest Megadeth record, well tried to listen to it, and like usual it sounds just like all of their other mundane, boring, crap. Hey, at least they have pretty good album cover art! Isn’t Mustaine the only remaining original member for Megadeth? Are you sure Newstead isn’t playing bass for them now? I swear I could hear his unmistakeable blurred and buzzy bass riffs. Anyway who really cares. Megadeth will always play second fiddle to Metallica and that will forever piss-off Megadeth fans. Melanie make sure you check my spelling and I’m sure you’ll correct me if I missed anything.

True, Metallica are getting older, but they’ve promised their new album to be a heavy shit..Yeah, well, those who’re comparing Megadeth and Metallica should realise that Megadeth is very much technically improvised than Metallica, (and this comes from a die-hard Metallica fan)the main reason behind this being Mustaine arguably the best guitarist the world had ever seen. Firing Mustaine was may be the worst mistake made by Metallica :(

Hello | 12/6/2007, 12:06 am EST

i like metallica

THEonlyZACKGORT | 3/17/2008, 11:34 am EST

I don’t care if Metallica puts out something that’s heavy as hell, or soft and easy to listen to.

The only requisite is that it be EPIC.

St. Anger was not EPIC.

MASTER OF PUPPETS was EPIC.

Alex | 6/25/2008, 4:08 am EST

I hope this new album is somewhat decent. They will never top Master of puppets, and justice for all, ride the lighting. Those days are over. Only albums worth listening to. Load/Reload were tolerable for me.

Vane | 7/11/2008, 3:07 am EST

St anger is better than any megashit albums…yeah

Geezer | 4/8/2009, 10:39 pm EST
