Rolling Stone’s movie critic has no problem coming up with ways to slam the Adam Sandler/Kevin James gay comedy I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry and praise the remake of John Waters’ Hairspray.

Aeronautical engineer - I’m a straight guy with mostly guy friends and it’s true, i couldn’t get any of my friends to see Hairspray with me because they decreed it “gay”. I think Travers is just sayin’ that to kinda get men who do prejudge hairspray as just gay, to kinda move beyond that and check out a really great piece of entertainment.

I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry is a comedic social commentary about society’s treatment of the GL community. Travers’ abuse of the gay slurs is elementary at best. Sandler’s CHARACTER learns to appreciate the community into which he’s been thrust. It is not simply some, “let’s say some gay jokes and denounce it.” The real joke is Travers’ musical summation of “It’s so gay.” Sad part is…I actually liked Travers until I saw this. Jessica Biel is smokin’ by the way. And there’s a performance from a star not mentioned in the forefront of the advertisements, whose performance will amaze you. I’ll give you a hint - the costarred with John Travolta in Pulp Fiction.

Where does all this “it’s so gay” crap come from? Who is the great arbiter of art and culture and life that makes these decrees? Obviously men are listening and they obey these judges of our existence so much that they flee from anything that smacks of art or music or dance. And why does no one cry “gay” over American Idol or Dancing with the Stars? Men have to get over themselves. A real man has no problem with music and dance and theatre. He just enjoys it and isn’t threatened by any of it. American culture needs to grow up a bit.
