Not that passing Psych 101 makes us experts, but we’re pretty sure James Blunt is trying to tell us something with his new album cover. According to the designer, it’s a collage of hundreds of photos of the singer-songwriter over the years, from childhood to supermodel-dating-hood: “James asked us not to use his face on the cover — so we put it on 1,000 times” (one shot for every time you heard “You’re Beautiful” last summer?). And we thought Kanye West was in love with his own image.

somewhat similar, but light years away in terms of coolness to Luis Gasca’s album cover for Collage. look it up. you’ll be amazed.

this concept is so done-to-death… what’s next? an all white cover with no image of blunt – called the white album?

your pretentious
your pretentious
your pretentious its true…

Similar visual photo collage concept as the one used for the cover of Exile on Main Street.
I think that the Exile album cover art story is more interesting and less pretentious. I read that the Stones’ album cover displayed a photo taken in 1950 of a tattoo parlor wall, by a photographer named Robert Frank. The wall displayed assorted photos of circus freaks.

Too many verions of JB for my taste and the overall look with the writing, etc, is quite messy, looks very 80′ies *fresh*, but not the worst cover art I’ve seen. It’s the content I’m worried about; another ‘You’re beautiful’ish plague and I’m done for. The first one already almost had me in as it is.
Reefer Dude | 7/19/2007, 9:33 am EST
Looks like Blunt and his designer must have been smoking some good blunts when they came up with this cover concept. Smoke away dudes!
nico1138 | 7/19/2007, 11:05 am EST
Imagine everyone of those little pictures singing “You´re beautiful”…
that´s scary
Ford Maxwell | 7/19/2007, 11:21 am EST
lmao, nico – and consider the tiny size of pics – it would sound like a chipmunk army choir in falsetto!
B P | 7/19/2007, 11:55 am EST
all so cynical, James Blunt makes alright songs. That’s good enough right? For radio-play that is..
Johnny Kickass | 7/19/2007, 12:03 pm EST
What an incredibly ugly cover. Played out and stupid. Completely suitable for James Blunt’s music.
tinman | 7/19/2007, 12:04 pm EST
Contender for worst album cover of the year.
Yo-yo | 7/19/2007, 12:09 pm EST
Looks like a 1980’s nintendo or apple mac game… hideous and very pretentious, quite fitting for someone who writes boring songs about things we’ve heard a million times… and the album title, please its as interesting as 10 days in solitary confinement. He is going to fade away as fast as well… he’s gone.
Sweet Mother of Mercy | 7/19/2007, 12:50 pm EST
Heaven help us! Another James Blunt album coming out? Lord pray for us!
marnr67 | 7/19/2007, 12:50 pm EST
well good news is it looks destined to be in the “4.99 and Under” pile at KMart by 2009
dorkus minorkus | 7/19/2007, 1:49 pm EST
uh, the comparison to “exile on main street” is pretty weak. so, how far do you have to get away from the rolling stones cover to see another (composite) image?

“uh, the comparison to “exile on main street” is pretty weak. so, how far do you have to get away from the rolling stones cover to see another (composite) image?”
You dork. I was referring specifically to the visual design concept of an assorted “photo snapshot collage” for the album cover. The Stones’ album cover design came immediately to mind. If you are such a design expert, then why didn’t you mention any other album cover art yourself to back up your art critique?

Blunt is over rated … Enough
RenoDavid | 7/19/2007, 4:58 pm EST
Heck, it’s only a cover. Do CD covers even matter? Sad to see all the hate for Mr. Blunt’s music though. Frankly, it’s refreshing to hear someone sing with real feelings and emotions. Gotta get his 1st CD one of these days…

If you look at this picture closely, you can see a gorrlia carrying an umbrella! Yours in hopeless obscurity, Mike

CD covers do matter to those who appreciate music and art – it’s often complimentary or reflective of the music itself as an artform.
Take a look at the 10,000 days packaging. The 3D artwork is just as trippy and complex as the music itself. Gotta love that.

“Achtung Baby”, anyone?
RenoDavid | 7/19/2007, 8:00 pm EST
vangogh, I’ll have to check out the 10,000 days cover. The main problem I have with CD covers is their size, or lack thereof. They just don’t have the impact of LPs. I wish every CD had a large PDF file that users could download and then print out. Heck, the larger art could be burned into the CD itself. This printout could then be placed into a standardized album for easy perusal while listening to your music. It would also be a great way to collect autographs.

i found ‘you’re beautiful’ on my ex-girlfriend’s iTunes. i dropped her ass, but not before i smacked her upside the head.

RenoDavid, definitely check out the 10,000 Days cd…inside is a booklet complete with 3D glasses and illustrations. TOOL puts as much craft and creativity into their packaging design and artwork as they do their music.

I have no problem with James Blunt. I consider him a guilty pleasure, since it seems to be something to be ashamed of. I’m looking forward to this record. He’s a great solid songwriter.
Someone mentioned ‘Achtung Baby.’
Yea…a little bit.

Perhaps the retro look has something to do with one of the songs on the album – called “1973″? Anyone else think so?
Also, this CD cover is actually quite a bit more high-tech than it appears. Just below the bridge of his nose is a tiny, live webcam. Can’t wait for this one to come out!
