Leaks: They aren’t just for record labels anymore. Following news that the seventh and final Harry Potter book (out Saturday) popped up on image-hosting site Photobucket.com comes word that publisher Scholastic, Inc. was granted a subpoena to learn the identity of the individual who posted “scanned copies containing original works of authorship,” according to a court filing. As most of the music industry has learned, legal action doesn’t do much to stop illegal downloading. In fact, the RIAA was recently ordered to pay an Oklahoma woman almost $70,000 after unsuccessfully suing her for copyright infringement more than three years following her accused crime, downloading songs from Kazaa.

There was a torrent download of the first 500 or so pages of the book a few days ago. A bookstore employee (or someone with access to the stock room) took pictures of the pages with a digital camera and uploaded them. You really would have to be desperate for Harry Potter to try to read these .jpg images less than a week before the book’s coming out.
If they wouldn’t make such a big deal out of the issue, I really don’t think anyone would bother.
baba o riley | 7/18/2007, 10:54 am EST
tell me that’s not the official cover art. it’s atrocious.
macaroni | 7/18/2007, 10:59 am EST
most people won’t bother with spoilers – we want to read the whole thing, it’s no fun to already know what happens. I wonder how they got pages though – weren’t they under lock and key?
Alyx | 7/18/2007, 10:59 am EST
There was a torrent download available for about a day a couple days ago. Someone uploaded .jpg images of the first 500 pages or so. It wouldn’t be a very comfortable or fun read…I’ll just wait for the book to come out.
If they didn’t make such a big deal over security, it wouldn’t be such a cool thing to download. Maybe the answer is to not act as if they about these books so much more than any other new releases.
Forbidden fruit is difficult to resist.
Alyx | 7/18/2007, 11:01 am EST
It isn’t…see the little books with the orange spines down to the left of the big ugly poster? Those would be the books. Feel better? I do!
Anonymous | 7/18/2007, 11:04 am EST
Who cares? Potter’s garbage literature anyway, and Rowling’s made enough money off it anyway. She should be giving these away for free.
Alyx | 7/18/2007, 11:05 am EST
Ok…that’s not the cover of the book. It’s just a giant ugly poster made up for the even.
The books are the cute lil orange spined things down to the left of the monstrosity.
Alyx | 7/18/2007, 11:08 am EST
No…they’re just in a special area…like maybe the manager’s office or a certain corner of the stock room in sealed boxes…If employees get too close they’re warned away and if the boxes turn up opened too early they’ll try to track down the culprit(s) and fire them.
ZipZapZopZoup | 7/18/2007, 11:10 am EST
Actually, that’s the cover in the rest of the world outside of the US.
Jim | 7/18/2007, 11:13 am EST
Alyx,
I don’t think so. That probably is the cover in England because – as you can see in the bottom – the publisher is “Bloomsbury.” In the U.S. it’s “Scholastic.” The series has always had different artists for the U.S. and British versions. And I don’t imagine those are the books on the floor with a building on it!

^^Typical idiotic answer…why should someone have to give something for free they they worked on after they become wealthy. Dont be retarded now. They work like everyone else…
borracho | 7/18/2007, 12:32 pm EST
I would like to see more people ripping off publishers and leaking pages on to the internet. Perhaps then it might mean that society actually gives a shit about literature( not that I am calling Harry Potter literature by any means) instead of Britany Spears’ hairdo. Besides, quality lit is dying due to these greedy pop regurgitating publishers stick it to these corporate literati waste piles. Maybe they can go cry themselves to sleep while reading Chicken Soup for the Billionaire That Just Got Ripped of Soul. And By the way Alyx I am pretty sure that those cute orange spined books next to the poster are books about the Taj Mahal. Unless Harry is fighting the Dark Lord in India I highly doubt that is the cover.

I’m not one to defend corporations by any means (especially the RIAA, who IMHO are getting exactly what they deserve right now for ripping off consumers for years), and I’ve been known to download stuff to sample myself (although like many I generally do buy the finished product in stores if it’s something I would purchase anyway), but people who make comments like “Rowling’s made enough money off it anyway. She should be giving these away for free” or “…I would like to see more people ripping off publishers and leaking pages on to the internet” probably would not feel that way if it was THEIR money or THEIR work that was being given away. Try creating something yourself and giving it away for free, or better yet go to work one day and give your pay to people on the street…and see if you feel the same way.
Comments like that are the mentality that the record companies and other corporations on the business end think the majority of consumers have anyway regarding illegal downloading. They don’t have to have that reinforced by remarks that show lack of intelligent thought.

Harry Potter? A good read to pass the time perhaps, but a great literary work? Probably not. Who the hell knows though. They probably said that about “Great Expectations” in 1861 too.

Here’s the last two pages. I think something about Harry sending his kids to wizard camp.
Ginny kissed Albus good-bye.
“See you at Christmas.”
“Bye, Al,” said Harry as his son hugged him. “Don’t forget Hagrid’s invited you to tea next Friday. Don’t mess with Peeves. Don’t duel anyone till you’ve learned how. And don’t let James wind you up.”
“What if I’m in Slytherin?”
The whisper was for his father alone, and Harry knew that only the moment of departure could have forced Albus to reveal how great and sincere that fear was.
Harry crouched down so that Albus’s face was slightly above his own. Alone of Harry’s three children, Albus had inherited Lily’s eyes.
“Albus Severus,” Harry said quietly, so that nobody but Ginny could hear, and she was tactful enough to pretend to be waving to Rose, who was now on the train, ” you were named for two headmasters of Hogwarts. One of them was a Slytherin and he was probably the bravest man I ever knew.”
“But just say –”
“- then Slytherin House will have gained an excellent student, won’t it? It doesn’t matter to us, Al. But if it matters to you, you’ll be able to choose Gryffindor over Slytherin. The Sorting Hat takes your choice into account,”
“Really?”
“It did for me,” said Harry.
He had never told any of his children that before, and he saw the wonder in Albus’s face when he said it. But now the doors were slamming all along the scarlet train, and the blurred outlines of parents were swarming forward for final kisses, last minute reminders.
Albus jumped into the carriage and Ginny closed the door behind him. Students were hanging from the windows nearest them. A great number of faces, both on the train and off, seemed to be turned toward Harry.
“Why are they all staring?” demanded Albus as he and Rose craned around to look at the other students.
“Don’t let it worry you,” said Ron. “It’s me. I’m extremely famous.”
Albus, Rose, Hugo, and Lily laughed. The train began to move, and Harry walked alongside it, watching his son’s thin face, already ablaze with excitement. Harry kept smiling and waving, even though it was like a little breavement, watching his son glide away from him…
The last trace of steam evaporated in the autumn air. The train sounded a corner. Harry’s hand was still raised in farewell.
“He’ll be all right,” murmured Ginny.
As Harry looked at her, he lowered his hand absentmindedly and touched the lightning scar on his forehead.
“I know he will.”
The scar had not pained Harry for nineteen years. All was well.
Copy and paste it everywhere.

hmmm… the book has already come out but this is bullshit. if you were a true potter fan you would buy the book, or get it from the library or soemthing. not cheat and read it early. and for people who say its a childrens book, i know several parents, ADULTS OVER 18 and many teens who read this book. infact the majority of it is from ages 13-17. Just as it has said on JK rowlings website, if you are a true fan wait till midnight…. which i had and read the book…. and also for people who say it is shit, it is definatly not. one of the best books ive ever read in my life.
