What exactly is a rip off or sound-alike? Influences? Revival bands? 30 seconds? This sounds like that; maybe; almost? NO! The real rip offs are very noticeable copies; blatantly re-written or reproduced in their entirety. Wolfmother will definitely feed off their influences like many other artists and musicians. This is normal. The real crooks are those who prefer to steal the whole suit off someone rather than dressing like them.

Puff Daddy/Come with me & Led Zeppelin’s ‘Kashmir’

Sean Kingston’s ‘Me Love’ vs. Led Zeppelin’s ‘You Don’t Have To Go’

There’s still more! Plus you’ll start to see a pattern but enough said.

Pearl Jam’s Who You Are from No Code reminds me of the tribal-esque coda to the Beatles Hello Goodbye - the “hey la hey hey lo ah” part.

ever since i heard the live bootlegs of Radiohead’s All I Need, i always think of the Primitive Radio Gods song Standing Outside a Phone Booth…

Eric | 9/9/2007, 1:07 am EST

Don’t correct me if I’m wrong, but RHCP’s “Easily” and “We Believe” are both sung in the same rhythm, and obviously sound the same when they do so.

Lee | 8/5/2007, 6:14 am EST

In PJ’s 10/05 Katrina benefit concert with Robert Plant & the Strange Sensation, Given to Fly and Goin’ to California were played back to back. Elsewhere, Eddie frequently mentions the ‘connection,’ ‘influence,’ or ‘homage.’ So it’s not an Avril Lavigne type situation. Just sayin’.

steve | 8/3/2007, 1:41 am EST

avril laveine’s girlfriend and the robinoos’s song about i wanna be your boyfriend

steve | 8/3/2007, 1:38 am EST

anybody else notice that the last 35 seconds of “give it away” by the red hot chili peppers is the exact same riff as black sabbath’s “sweet leaf”

I think Finger Eleven - Paralyzer sounds less like Franz Ferdinand - Take Me Out and more like Zeppelin Led - Trampled Under Foot.

Killer Joe | 8/1/2007, 11:10 pm EST

Actually, Offspring’s “Why Don’t You Get a Job” is like a mashup of “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da” and Simon and Garfunkel’s “Cecelia”

Axorion | 8/1/2007, 2:04 pm EST

Blues Traveler? That’s funny! They got there chord progression for ‘The Hook’ from the canon of some baroque composer named Johann Pachelbel.

If you’re going to steal then steal from someone who’s been dead for 300 years.

groovequest | 7/31/2007, 8:35 am EST

blues traveller “run around”
springsteen “rosalita”

Zonawriter | 7/30/2007, 9:12 pm EST

o man, how’d I miss this one?

I’ve said for years that Nirvana’s “Come as You Are” rips off Killing Joke’s “Eighties.” Listen to the riffs.

Also…Escape Club’s “Wild West” does its own Elvis Costello “Pump It Up” vibe.

Axorion | 7/29/2007, 2:57 pm EST

The Who - Eminence Front vs Alan Parsons Project - I Wouldn’t Want To Be Like You

America - Ventura highway vs
David Gray - Babylon

Jack | 7/27/2007, 11:40 pm EST

Yeah, Kevin, slamming rap makes you a racist, right.

Jeff: More Than A Feeling and Smells Like Teen Spirit have similar cords during the refrain. I have heard that before this list ever came out.

How about when John Forgerty was sued for sounding too much like himself. Run Through the Jungle and the Old Man Down the Road.

Anonymous | 7/25/2007, 4:52 pm EST

all the early Who songs (I Can’t Explain, My Generation, et friggin cetera) are rips of all the early Kinks songs (you really got me, all day and all of the night…), and all the early Kinks songs are rips of louie louie.

so put that in your fife and toke it.

Jeremy | 7/20/2007, 5:30 am EST

I dig the Strokes and everything, but you can find something in virtually EVERY ONE of their songs that was copped from somewhere else. There’s a song on the new album (can’t remember the name) that totally rips off the chorus from “Mandy” by Barry Manilow…I SWEAR TO GOD.

They make the rip offs sound good, though. (Yes, debatable I know).

JoBob | 7/20/2007, 12:35 am EST

How about the Chuck Berry classic “You Can’t Catch Me” and The Stooges awesome “1970″? THEY ARE THE SAME!!

rohan | 7/19/2007, 9:08 pm EST

That funky town song and the doors “changling” have a very similar feel

Jordan | 7/19/2007, 8:33 pm EST

I just realized an incredible one… Scar Tissue by the Red Hot Chili Peppers VS. Intuition by Jewel

this rock list needs to be used again this weekend, I’m sure most people have given more thought to it since Monday

45 HiGH | 7/19/2007, 8:29 pm EST

Oh, also Cheap Trick’s “Woke Up With a Monster” and Michael Jackson’s “Black or White.”

These two were released within a year of each other which seems to usually be the case when it comes to these “funny coincidences.” ;)

Steve | 7/19/2007, 5:14 pm EST

Umm, “Live And Let Die” was covered by GNR, but it’s a Paul McCartney song.

And nice to hear from the racists, claiming rap rips off everything. Ask your average delta bluesman what they think of the Rolling Stones.

My contributions: Boss Hog’s “Winn Coma” and Offspring’s “Come Out And Play.”

American Breed’s “Bend Me Shape Me” and Garbage’s “I Think I’m Paranoid”

Laura | 7/19/2007, 2:52 pm EST

The choruses from the Pixies’ “Where is my Mind” and Juliana Hatfield’s “Somebody is Waiting for Me” are virtually identical.

“Where is my Mind”: E, C#m, G#m, A

“Somebody is Waiting for Me”: E, C#m, G#, A

The Chemical Brothers “Setting Sun” is remarkably like The Beatles “Tomorrow Never Knows”. But I think it was a tribute to the Beatles, not a rip off.

me | 7/19/2007, 11:41 am EST

all rap songs sound like eveyone else as they rip off eveybody the list would be way to long to name

Lizard King | 7/19/2007, 11:11 am EST

Fine young cannibals - “She drives me crazy”
Green Day - “When I come around”

They also share the G C Em D progression with “More than a feeling’s” chorus

Elliot | 7/19/2007, 6:24 am EST

Nobody has mentioned Norwegian Wood by the Beatles and fourth time around by Dylan. These songs have the exact same melody. It seems Dylan must have still been using the folkie tradition of ripping off melodies and putting new words in.

Rock and Roll Giraffe | 7/18/2007, 10:46 pm EST

OOPS!!! Meant # 9 NOT # 12!! Sorry people!!

Gina | 7/18/2007, 9:21 pm EST

Nos.5&6 SOUND nothing alike!
As for # 12, yeah, it’s nearly picture perfect, so who ripped off who on those 2 songs?? ” R.O.C.K In The U.S.A.” vs “What I like About You” is NOT alike at all.And I KNEW that #12 sounded like the Beatles.! Now if I could only convince my 17 y/o son that they’re alike!

theif | 7/18/2007, 4:10 pm EST

i’m way late on this list but silverchair’s tommorow sounds a bit like more than a feeling too

also the drum part to begin offspring’s gone away sounnds pretty much the same as the begining drumming of NIN’s head like a hole

The music in the verses would be identical if not for Flea’s elaborate playing….

actually, i see that someone did mention this, but it’s worth mentioning twice.

the drum break in RHCP “Hump De Bump” is wayyyyy too similiar to the drum break in “Halloween” by Dave Matthews Band, like seriously…listen to it and say otherwise…i dare you

hope no one already post this | 7/18/2007, 7:03 am EST

The Strokes - You only live once
Everclear - My Sexual Life

And everything else has been posted already

what's that smell? | 7/18/2007, 7:00 am EST

I’ve always thought “Smells Like Teen Spirit” ripped off Wham’s “Wake Me Up Before You Go.” Seriously, if you listen to both songs back to back 350 times while putting together model airplanes in a poorly ventilated room - the similarities are pretty freakin’ obvious. George Micheal, you should sue.

Ian | 7/18/2007, 5:53 am EST

Miranda Lambert’s “Kerosene” sounds eerily like Steve Earle’s “I Feel Alright.” It’s just twice as fast.

It was Kurt Cobain’s intention to write that song in a Beatlesque style. The Beatles were one of his influences.

and Breaking the Girl of RHCP & manic deppresion of Jimi Hendrix???

myspace.com/goddamnidiot | 7/18/2007, 12:02 am EST

AC/DC’s Rock N roll Damnation borrows the main riff from Thin Lizzy’s Rosalie.

Also, as for the whole More Than A Feeling / Smells Like Teen Spirit thing, if you can get ahold of the Nirvana bootleg CD, Outcesticide V (5), there’s a track where Kurt kind of uses the chorus from More Than A Feeling as an intro for Teen Spirit. Whatever. Hardly anything in pop/rock music isn’t a rip-off/tribute to something else…

chochi | 7/17/2007, 10:58 pm EST

Yes, I agree with The Kinks Picture Book and Green Day Warning. Is not that they just sound alike, they are in fact the same song with different words. Shame on Green Day.

Andrew Rollins | 7/17/2007, 9:40 pm EST

silverchair- leave me out
black sabbath- sweet leaf
*silverchair stole the main riff

guns n roses- civil war
guns n roses- live and let die

Yeah, I totally agree with Daughtry’s “It’s Not Over” and Fuel’s “Hemhorrage”. What a double diss for not joining the band!

What about Finger Eleven’s “Paralyzer” and Franz Ferdinand’s “Take Me Out”? Not too much of a difference musically.

What about “Let it Grow” by Eric Clapton and “November Rain” by Guns N Roses. I always thought they had this one part that was identical - basically the background riff in Let it Grow sounds like the piano breakdown in November Rain.

I’ve noticed REM just keeps recycling a lot of the same chord progressions in their songs, but I don’t knw if you can accuse a band of sounding like itself.

where is the love is a cover that predates torn. the natasha bettingfield song these words is closer. the bassline on the chorus of more than a feeling and smells like teen spirit are the same, for anyone who’s confused. my money is on the boxtops’ 1967 “the letter” and the beatles’ 1968 “Glass onion” (as well as countless beatles songs that sound like glass onion, including Harrison’s when we was fab)

X Offender and Born To Run? Don’t see it except that they both have an early 1960’s feel. The Killers sound like The Entire Born To Run and Darkness albums (and I like it)but not any specific song (ok the end of Sam’s Town is the end of BTR)

What is the Puddle Of Mudd song that sounds exactly like the song fron Grease??

matt, you are so wrong.

“Last Resort” by Papa Roach is a rip off of Iron Maiden’s “Hallowed Be Thy Name”

Also “Come as You Are” by Nirvana and “Eighties” by Killing Joke are sound alikes. I believe that Killing Joke sued over that one.

It seems that the “great” Green Day have made several appearance on this list. They are such a fucking joke.

Randall F. | 7/17/2007, 9:34 am EST

“Sexy Sadie” by the Beatles, and “Karma Police” by Radiohead. Am I only the person who sees this!?! It’s the exact same piano melody at the end of both choruses! The exact same!!!

Nikola | 7/17/2007, 9:20 am EST

What about oppening riffs of Rolling Stones’ “Hold on to your hat” and Kaiser Chief’s “Ruby”?

matt | 7/17/2007, 9:12 am EST

Papa Roach’s “Last Resort” rips off Green Day’s “Brain Stew.”

Jude | 7/17/2007, 9:05 am EST

Yeah somebody’s said it already, but the most blatant and similar-sounding ripoff I’ve ever heard was the first 5 seconds of Oasis’ “Don’t Look Back in Anger” compared to “Imagine” by John Lennon. EXACT same chord progression, EXACT same tempo (as well as the fact that it’s on piano). That belongs WAY past the likes of The Killers and Nazareth.

can’t believe Rolling Stone left The Strokes “Last Night” vs. Tom Petty’s “American Girl” off their list.

also - the guitar riff in The White Stripe’s “Icky Thump” is definitely an homage to Deep Purple’s “My woman from tokyo”

Johnny Kickass | 7/17/2007, 1:53 am EST

The guitar riff to “Teen Spirit” sounds nothing like “More Than A Feeling”.

Look at the rhythm pattern on paper. Nothing alike. There are no scratches on “More Than A Feeling” and the scratches in “Teen Spirit” are as much a part of the riff as the chords.

More Than A Feeling = G - C - E - D

Teen Spirit = F - Bb - Ab - Db

There is absolutely nothing there other than a 1 4 modulation in the first two chords.

JD | 7/17/2007, 1:33 am EST

I was going to post about You Raise Me Up but somebody beat me to it. Anyway I think We Are The World sounds a lot like Do You Hear What I Hear. Or how about the similarities between Touch Me In The Morning and the bridge in Just the Way You Are.

Late to the party. But the most obvious one (in my book) is nowhere on the list…

Chris Isaak’s Baby Did a Bad Bad thing is a great song. But probably because he ripped off almost an even better song. One of the best in fact…

ZZ Top. La Grange. Check it out. In fact, that riff has been used COUNTLESS times. But Chris’ is probably the most obvious.

the beginning of My Bloody Valentine’s “soon” sounds almost exactly the same as the beginning of Men Without Hats’ classic song “Safety Dance”

NIRVANA VS BOSTON | 7/16/2007, 8:57 pm EST

Ok, listen. The beginning lick of Smells Like Teen Spirit is what the song is most known for. Dum, Dum, dum ::pause:: dum-dum, dum, dum dum. Get it? This is the part of Teen Spirit they’re referencing.

In more than a feeling, right after they say “More than a feeling” the nearly identical riff is performed similar to the Nirvana song. It is also repeated throughout the song, mainly in the solo towards the end….

Now can someone explain to me how the oddball above me thinks that Last Dance with Mary Jane and Danni California sound similar.

Jeff, it’s the guitar riff in Smells Like Teen Spirit that sounds similar to More then a Feeling.

John Denver successfully sued New Order over ‘Leaving on a Jet Plane’’s supposed similarity to ‘Run’ - I’ve listened to both songs and cant for the life of me figure out how they’re similar other then having roughly the same tempo and a la-di-da melody.

Off-topic | 7/16/2007, 5:22 pm EST

Most of the songs listed are homages…so of course they sound alike…the Killers’ “When You Were Young” is a purposeful take-off on “Born to Run”. Same with “Given to Fly” and “Going to California”. Elasitica’s “Connection” even has a “3-Girl Rhumba” sample in it, for chrissakes.

There’s a big difference between homage and theft or accidental similarity.

Oddjob | 7/16/2007, 5:20 pm EST

This list is so weird, idiotic, and wrong on every count.

Jeff | 7/16/2007, 5:16 pm EST

And how could you leave out “R.O.C.K. In The U.S.A.” vs. “What I Like About You”??
