  • Slash has spoken out on the long-awaited Guns N’ Roses album Chinese Democracy, saying, “I’m sure it’s got some amazing shit on it ’cause I know Axl and what he’s capable of. So I’m interested to hear it but patient enough to wait until he figures it out. Because I don’t have anything to do with it, it’s easy for me to say that.”
  • AC/DC’s Brian Johnson confirmed that co-founders Angus and Malcolm Young are working on a new album and considering a tour.
  • Rapper Remy Ma was arrested in New York and charged with attempted murder; she turned herself in and pleaded not guilty on Sunday.
  • Pete Townshend’s latest rock opera, The Boy Who Heard Music, debuted over the weekend at New York Stage and Films’ 23rd Powerhouse Theater festival.

Wow… I love the Smashing Pumpkins and the new album, but Billy Corgan in his open letter just sounds like an arrogant self-obsessed jerkoff. Not even Bob Dylan and David Bowie walked around referring to themselves as “rock messiahs”!

Matt | 7/16/2007, 10:06 am EST

that really wasnt Billy Corgan writing that. that was that newspaper’s way to bash him.

Matt | 7/16/2007, 10:08 am EST

I believe it wasnt Billy Corgan who wrote that. That newspaper just wrote it to bash him.

kcv | 7/16/2007, 10:18 am EST

geez it’s only been nearly 8 years since ’stiff upper lip’ for ac/dc….i bet they’re so rich from the sales of ‘back in black’ they have very little motivation to record and tour…though how difficult is it to come up w/ all those 3-chord riffs? they still rock though but damn it’s been a LONG time.

The Goose | 7/16/2007, 10:20 am EST

“Corgan’s Open Letter Just Stranger Satire”

That will be the headline in RS’s Daily Rock News tomorrow.

Fortunate Son | 7/16/2007, 10:50 am EST

ill never get that 8 minutes back.

Hey Genuises | 7/16/2007, 10:56 am EST

Do you REALLY think Rolling Stone doesn’t believe that Corgan thing is a parody? Uh, think about it…

Bangers-N-Mash | 7/16/2007, 11:05 am EST

if Corgan really wanted to write an open letter, it would have been in like, the Chicago Tribune… duh

Shame on little Seattle papers

Still LMAO! | 7/16/2007, 11:10 am EST

Forget Spinal Tap! The funniest moment in rock history is Billy Corgan’s open letter. No ego has ever been so profoundly exagerated. I will print this and wallpaper my bathroom.

Johnny P | 7/16/2007, 11:25 am EST

Billy Corgan is gonna spin right off this fucking planet.

bt | 7/16/2007, 11:27 am EST

billy corgan… RIIIGHHT.

firstly he would not misspel jimmy’s surname… secondly, you would think he’d get his own lyrics right..

APF | 7/16/2007, 11:33 am EST

It’s a parody, people.

Goddamn hipster journalists.

your mom | 7/16/2007, 11:37 am EST

The Corgan letter smells like a hoax. No way did this guy ever read Hegel. Nobody just “reads” Hegel. well, maybe some germans or something.

When he refers to “bring the light” as the one song that’s “remotely accessible,” that should be a clue.

At least I PRAY this is a hoax. I PRAY.. Otherwise, this is the saddest (pathetic, not tear inducing) thing I’ve ever read.

I guess the fact that it’s believable that he would write should say something though. The Cure and the Bee Gees? That’s pretty funny.

Kin U No | 7/16/2007, 11:38 am EST

Smashing Pumpkins WERE the most important band for maybe a month in 1993. I’ll give ‘em that. Siamese Dream kicked it in.
They had a moment, and then POOF!
Billy’s head exploded.

abandonedstation | 7/16/2007, 11:43 am EST

yeah, that’s a spoof paper, RS (’seattle’s only newspaper’?). Corgan didn’t write it. Remember when you guys would start hoaxes (Masked Mauraders) instead of being suckered by them?

Awfully nice of Slash to not mention that Axl is batshit insane and that GnR is a mere shadow of what it once was.

A new Townshend opera? Hopefully the hero smashes a guitar into the drumkit at the end.

by the way, sometimes my posts are being removed even though they’re pretty damn relevant to the topics at hand. Am I being semi-banned? Just curious.

or does this haver something to do with it:

Rachel | 7/16/2007, 11:47 am EST

If there’s any more need for proof that that letter was not from Billy Corgan…look at the signature! Totally off…That paper is supposed to be satirical.

cherub | 7/16/2007, 11:59 am EST

Would Billy refer to his new bassist as “another chick bassist”?

Sanchez | 7/16/2007, 12:18 pm EST

James Iha wrote it.

mud | 7/16/2007, 12:28 pm EST

Thank you Rolling stone for the good articles. :)

uck of | 7/16/2007, 12:31 pm EST

lips ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Somewhere In the Middle | 7/16/2007, 12:32 pm EST

I’m sure Remy Ma was thrilled to turn herself in on attempted murder charges. I give it a couple of weeks before she becomes the biggest thing in hip-hop as she now has real street cred in that community.

Bawrence | 7/16/2007, 12:36 pm EST

who cares- the Pumpkins have sucked since, like, ‘98. Nobody likes your new shit, Billy.

Jimmy Chamberlin | 7/16/2007, 12:39 pm EST

And do you really think Billy wouldn’t know how to spell my name correctly?

And as usual the less intelligent creatures take it for the truth. Cause RS said so!

ashmoore | 7/16/2007, 12:42 pm EST

It’s a joke and RS knows it. Funny as hell though. Ol’ Billy Corgan may not have written it, but we all know he thinks it. I think he’s on a mission to have the biggest rock ego. Hey RS, there’s a good weekend rocklist for ya: Oasis, U2, Duran Duran, that dude from Blink 182, it practically writes itself

Ryan | 7/16/2007, 12:57 pm EST

Sweet! Look at the picture. Corgan is part of the hairclub for men.

Get You Some | 7/16/2007, 12:59 pm EST

to Bawrence………SP’s new album is very good and I like it a lot…….it is a lot like their old stuff……..so piss off tool!

Jeff | 7/16/2007, 1:19 pm EST

I’m pretty sure RollingStone KNOWS it’s not Billy Corgan, hence the GODDAMN QUOTATION MARKS!!!

“Billy Corgan”…..get it?

You are all morons.

mike | 7/16/2007, 1:29 pm EST

earth to jm
no s**t

Joe | 7/16/2007, 1:42 pm EST

Billy Corgan SHOULD have written that. He would be much cooler if he had. Either way, press play on “Bullet with Butterfly Wings” and rock on.

Joe | 7/16/2007, 2:12 pm EST

Oh and Slash? Your comments provide a GLIMMER of hope that once Libertad tanks, you will pull a Tom Morello and get back to where you once and forever belonged.

K_Angell | 7/16/2007, 4:58 pm EST

I’ve read all the reviews and blogs about this new album and I’ve come to one conclusion: the Smashing Pumpkins’ fans and critics are too busy being offended by Billy Corgan’s supposed egomania to pay any attention at all to the amazing new material on Zeitgeist. If these sad people could get past their own insecurities, they would hear how fucking amazing this new album really is. It’s unfortunate that Corgan’s unwavering talent, confidence, and ambition frightens these little people so much. If ever they pull their heads out of their asses they’d be pleased to hear the best Pumpkins album since Mellon Collie and the Infinate Sadness.

Oh, and I wish Corgan HAD written that open letter that you have all been discussing so incessantly… he’d be perfectly justified in doing so. Why? Because, it’s the truth.

Buggie Owens | 7/17/2007, 1:40 pm EST

Bashing Corgan again, eh Rolling Stone? As a longtime reader and subscriber since the late 1970s, I am getting a little tired of this. Quit reporting on pop bullshit and start being music journalists again.

Rory | 7/17/2007, 5:10 pm EST

Agreeing with a few of you….this new Pumpkins album is relevant. It is their best since Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. I’ve had a week now to understand the direction, and I’m proud to say that Corgan is back on track.
