Rocklahoma Report: Four Days of ’80s Hair-Metal Mania

7/16/07, 12:48 pm EST

RocklahomaThe Rocklahoma festival was a whirlwind tour of ’80s hair-metal Olympus. What a weekend — the sisters were twisted, the foxes were Britny and the pussycats were faster. This festival united a swarm of Sunset Strip pay-to-play sleaze metal titans: Ratt, Poison, Twisted Sister, L.A. Guns, Warrant, Slaughter, Skid Row, Quiet Riot. For three days, they rose out of the cellar and into a giant field on the outskirts of Pryor, Oklahoma, where some 30,000 hardcore fans came on, felt the noize and asked each other, “Who were Firehouse again?” Whitesnake didn’t make it, but White Lion did, and so did Great White. This was definitely the place where the down boys go, even if they’re down men now. The fans ranged from local kids to leathery ladies still trying to fit into that vintage Winger “In the Heart of the Young” tour bustier.

Some of the bands still had it, others didn’t. Poison headlined Friday night with a set that went heavy on classic-rock covers (“Suffragette City,” nice; “Can’t You See,” gimme a break) though the inevitable highlight was “Talk Dirty to Me,” the song that sums up the entire genre if anything does. Vince Neil did a solo set of mostly Mötley Crüe tunes, though unfortunately not his solo hit “You’re Invited But Your Friends Can’t Come.” (Vince also spread the word about his upcoming ocean adventure, The Mötley Cruise.) Bang Tango blasted through “Untied and True,” Enuff Z’Nuff did “New Thing,” Faster Pussycat did “Cathouse,” and Firehouse (best remembered for their feud with Firehose) probably played a bunch of Firehouse songs, though I took off for the barbecue stand so don’t ask me. Queensryche added a touch of prog. Winger’s “Seventeen” was greatly enhanced by Bang Tango’s Joe Leste, who danced around the beer tent improvising new lyrics: “She’s only seventeen / But now she’s forty-three.” Quiet Riot flubbed a few chords in “Cum On Feel the Noize” and “Metal Health (Bang Your Head),” yet the crowd was rooting for them, giving a strangely emotional cheer when Kevin Dubrow sang, “I’m not a loser and I ain’t no weeper.”

Before the show, Skid Row’s guitarist said, “Nothing’s changed in this band for twenty years.” Dude, you mean besides the fact that Sebastian Bach isn’t in the band anymore? Because we all noticed. Ratt has Stephen Pearcy back, but his voice was sadly shot. It’s a shame Britny Fox doesn’t have Dizzy Dean Davidson anymore, but he left in 1990, so I guess it’s a little late to start complaining now. Oh well — at least Tommy Paris could hit the earsplitting high notes in “Girlschool.” Warrant’s new singer Jamie St. James couldn’t hold a slice of cherry pie to Jani Lane. There was a strange backstage scene on Sunday, when Jani Lane unexpectedly showed up, getting into a shouting match with his old bandmates in the parking lot. Another guest was original GN’R drummer Steven Adler, who walked around, shook hands and advised anybody in earshot that it was time for Axl to cut the bullshit and get the band back together. Perhaps Skid Row’s new singer Johnny Solinger said it best: “No matter how old you get … or how old we get … you will always be … Youth! Gone! Wiiiiiild!”

maus | 1/14/2008, 11:38 am EST

I just don’t understand why people post about a musical genre that they hate so much? I wouldn’t go on a rap webpage and say negative stuff either. If you don’t like it just do something else. Don’t you have a life?
I think Rocklahoma is a great idea for all of us children of the 80’s and why can’t negative assholes let it be and let us have our fun. So stupid.

Chey | 1/11/2008, 2:12 am EST

I am so pissed i wasn’t around in the 80’s music just sucks now a days and dudes in bands are ugly. Im about to turn 17 and Metal fuckin rulz!!!!

JGraham | 12/31/2007, 11:10 pm EST

The event was good. Quality playing, and an honesty displayed, it was what it was. People were happy. Critics sad. ‘Nuff said. Tulsa, OK.

JETBOY needs to be on the bill for next year. Jetboy is back. and better than ever

I was at Rocklahoma and I thought that it ROCKED!! I enjoyed listening to all the bands and was very excited that we were privledged that they all came to our area to put on the Concert of Concerts. I have always wanted to see these bands. I have waited for years to see Twisted Sister, which rocked the House. My wife and I enjoyed this concert better than any other concert that we had been to. So, those of you that did not go and do not like the 80’s hair bands, you can just stay the hell away and go wherever and listen to whatever the hell you want to. Just do not put down the 80’s when you do not know what the hell yu are missing.

Trevor | 12/7/2007, 7:53 pm EST

I believe that this generation of music will always be in our souls and live on for as long as the fans scream for more!!!! As for the ones who were there and loved it and wanted more, see ya next year. As for the ones that weren’t there and didn’t like the thought of the 80’s hair bands Doing what we love them to do, just stay home, listen to the ssshh that you want to listen to and let our past resurface.

(= | 12/7/2007, 3:02 pm EST

Im sick of reading these messages saying how bad hair metal is. what is so bad about it? hair metal is awesome because it lets your inner party person come out. and plus the singers actually sing, the new bands today usually just scream at the top of their lungs. i dont like that.

(= | 12/7/2007, 2:50 pm EST

i wasnt at rocklahoma,………….
but i can guarantee that ill be there next year. im only 15 and i absolutely love this type of music (The hair bands RULE), and to the losers who hate this amazing music, GO F*&^ YOURSELVES!

next year | 10/31/2007, 12:38 pm EST

Tickets are already on sale for Rocklahoma 2008. No bands have been announced yet but that is coming soon. Rocklahoma 2007 was amazing and there were over 110,000 fans there during Poison on friday night. What pisses me off about grundge and the cry baby winers that follow it is the fact that they dissed the 80’s out of existance for nearly a decade. Walking the planet, not washing, wearing flannel, staring at thier shoes and crying because daddy spanked them for breaking the neigbors window. I don’t hate it but grundge was really depressing and on another note name more than 5 grundge bands that are still in existance today. You can’t

SMF | 9/6/2007, 12:05 am EST

ROCKLAHOMA WAS SOO FUN!!!!!! Hair metal is awesome. I’m 15 and it sucks cuz i wasnt around in the 80’s, but I can still se these bands so who cares. Twisted Sister was incredible, of course. I just wish W.A.S.P. didn’t have to cancel, but I’m sure they’ll be there next year. They too are one of my favorite bands. 1 thing though. there were 30,000 people per day. It all added up to about 100,000 metalheads out there for the music we love. \m/\m/.

Voodoo | 8/22/2007, 10:27 pm EST

I just want to say man, who ever wrote that atical freaking miss the total point on all the fun that was brought back to people like us hair metal rocking maniacs! I had the greatest time of my life 20 years later. The bands freaking rocked period and the fans were the greatest bunch of friends anyone could befriend! rocklahomma you did bitchen! rock the hell on people! cause remember if it was not for all us there would be no Rolling stone mag!geeesh guess all there taste in in there mouth! wooooohooooo rock on!

Sunni | 8/22/2007, 12:09 pm EST

I think the reason people are disappointed in the Rolling Stone article is because we naively assumed we would get a fair shake. Now, I agree that the “journalist” Mr. Sheffield has the right to say what he wants, but Mr. Sheffield I must ask this: What happened to journalistic intergrity? Ethical behavior? The article sounds like you came to Rocklahoma with your opinions already formed. Now it is my understanding that RS doesn’t want fans to write the articles, they want truth, but I don’t see truth either. This was evident during the Poison show. Five of us were pulled to be “Poison Girls” for photos with Rolling Stone, for the spread on Rocklahoma. Once we were backstage we were quickly told that they wanted girls that looked like typical 80’s groupies (spandex, big hair, ect). The concept for making a spectacle of our genre was already in motion. Maybe it was naive of us to believe that publications like Rolling Stone were still in the music business. I understand that financially they must make a living, but at what expense? In portraying the acts at Rocklahoma as has been hacks you have put yourself in a position to deter music lovers everywhere from discovering new exciting bands that could be another revolution in the music scene (ie Gypsy Pistoleros, Dirty Penny, D45). Sill me, I thought Rolling Stone was about music.

markus | 8/21/2007, 11:23 am EST

I don’t love the so (stupidly) called “hair” metal as a whole(yes to dokken no to twisted sister to make an example),but also the lesser band of this genre worths more than all the rap and crap of the last 15 years.
the 60’s 70’s and 80’s will ALWAYS be remembered because the majority of their music was played with real instruments and singed by real singers…in a word..it was TRUE!
what let me completely amazed is that America music major and media is wasting time with rap,nu metal, punk,(s)hit hop and all this false crap “music” when there would be an HUGE following for REAL ROCK.
what rock needs are new bands, what rock needs is a new led zeppelin,a new pink floyd,a new journey etc…
now this is called classic rock but the real term would be REAL ROCK.
I wonder when the media will realize how many people around planet earth are hungry for REAL ROCK,played by REAL musicians and singers.
I hope rocklahoma 2008 not anymore to be labeled as hair festival or 80’s festival, but as REAL ROCK festival with new and old bands of many rock genres like aor, hard rock, prog rock, real heavy metal etc….
regarding rolling stone….well…..maybe it’s time they discover what REAL rock it’s all about!

Trey2K | 8/13/2007, 2:58 am EST

A perfect show, no, but a great show? You bet! The article doesn’t mention 30,000 fans PER DAY. The tickets were single-day and weekend-packages too were available. (Best deal is the 4-day VIP, with all the food you can eat and beer you can drink.) I saw Saturday only, as it’s worth the trip up from Texas to see the Skids again, who were great. Some nearby whole 4-day fans said the Friday night crowd was just as big and the bands played just as well. As the sun set, we were treated to an 80s-style arena show, with big lights, screens and sound - THE WHOLE CIRCUS. Winger, Dokken and Vince Neil made time stand still and took us back to the days of our collective youth gone wild - middle-aged bands playing to a middle-aged audience. But this was OUR music. Great musicianship! They rocked our asses off and we cheered our asses off.
(One thing, as a group of fans, we’re gained much too much weight - in short, we’re fat! My brother had to ask me, “where are all the hot chicks that used to come to these shows?” I said nothing as I looked out across the crowd trying to imagine what the women, now mostly mothers, looked like fifty pounds lighter and twenty years younger when they WERE hot chicks-thanks for NOT showing us your tits!) Also, the choices of available foods could be expanded, not much more than over-priced foot-long corn dogs. I hope there were superior choices under the tent for those who coughed up the bigger bucks.
Hats off to Kip, Reb and Rod - Winger sounded better than ever. Okay, so Don has lost the top end of his range, he has a hot guitar player who’s dead on playing George’s licks - Dokken played a great set. Vince Neil was the highlight of the day. He sounded great, he’s in great shape, sober, happy and high energy all the way through. What a great band and guitar player with Vince! They opened with “Live Wire” and went right into “Piece of your action” and did a greatest Motley hits set (minus the amazing Carabe album, no Hooligan’s Holiday). Janie, quit messing around and re-join Warrant. The Warrant band of all original members sounds as great as ever, but the singer made me want to slit my wrists. I’m sure his voice is okay, but he cannot hit the notes required to sing Warrant songs. ‘Cmon fellows, are you trying to tell me that he’s the best available singer in all of LA to take Janie’s place? Here’s a big salute to the Skids (nice to see Snake again and Solinger sounds great) Winger, Dokken and Vince for bringing me out of my Warrant-enduced depression. I’m glad these bands are still working hard and putting on shows and playing the songs that were so important to a whole generation. The audience had people driving and flying in from all over the US and the world. (I saw some fans who flew in from Japan and Brazil for example.) It was good fun. Let’s do it again next year.

Whoever wrote this was an intern, and clearly DID NOT attend. I am very dissappointed in Rolling Stone. So out of touch, trying to be cool again…missing the mark. Just like I’ve had a free subscription for 3 years and never get a billing renwal! Thanks! ;-)

Every band brought their “A” game and I’ve never seen 100,000 ppl and 38 bands with a smile on their face for 4 straight days.

Come get the real scoop from the fans perspective here: http://rocklahoma.ning.com

Ve ry dissappointed, and thank you for my 3 years of free Rolling Stone…innaccurate reviews, inaccurate billing, works for me!

Earthbound Misfit | 8/1/2007, 6:45 pm EST

Rocklahoma 2007 was the best time I have ever had. This show was proof that rock is not dead. No, the bands did not sound or look as they did in the 80’s. Do you? Things change. The point of this show (IMO) was to bring people of like minds back together to re-enjoy their youth. Hear the bands we all LOVE, from back in our day, LIVE, once again! I am glad I went, I WILL be back next year.

ROCKLAHOMA 2008!!!! I Wanna ROCK!

MetalMama | 8/1/2007, 5:06 pm EST

I attended Rocklahoma and had one of the best times of my entire life! The bands were more hits than misses, but Mr. Sheffield seems more intent on negativity as though he were “too cool” to attend an event like this. Articles like this are one of the many reasons I did not renew my subscription this year after being a loyal reader for many years.

S Stein | 7/31/2007, 4:39 am EST

Gypsy Pistoleros U.S debut . The best English band in the last 10 years. They will take over the U.S . Cant wait to see them at Rocklahoma 2008

Rocklahoma 2007 Review

Our group traveled from Texas to attend what turned out to be a fantastic weekend of music, fun, and friendship.

The Location:
Pryor was a perfect choice of location. The grounds were green and isolated. Police had a minimal presence because the fans were well behaved. The festival provided many food vendors and merchandise tents. I liked the support for our military and the complimentary chopper buzzes during the national anthem!

The Music:
Prior to heading to Pryor….
I formulated my own opinions of how the festival would pan out. I questioned the headliners. Since I was going to see my High-School heroes, I expected marginal musicianship. I was completely wrong….

(I missed the extra Thursday shows)

Friday - WHITE LION played really great and sounded decent. It seemed the soundcrew was fiddling with knobs all weekend… Y&T blew my freakin’ mind - incredible musicians…. SLAUGHTER kicked azz and sounded good for some of the time but sadly got the worst mix all weekend… Quiet Riot impressed everyone - It was a loud, agressive, and well played set. The QR bassist did a solo that would have turned Vic Wooten’s head! RATT was OK at best - The vocals were lacking but the fans appreciated the effort… POISON dished out the best set of the weekend. I never saw or liked them but they won me over at this show…

Saturday - Things got going with Firehouse who sounded and played a nearly flawless set. Strong vocals indeed! Warrant was great & I thought the new singer did a good job. Winger brought it big time…
Solid musicians and great sound…
DOKKEN - Wow what a great band! Don sounded good and worked the crowed. Lynch was not needed as his cover played some of the best stuff I have ever heard… Period…
Vince Neil was a bore… I enjoyed watching his guitarist sing and play much more….

Sunday - Steelheart really caught my attention as we entered the festival grounds on Sunday. Possibly the best singer all weekend. Great band! LA Guns rocked us and left everyone wanting more.
Great White kept building the energy with a blistering set which included a slow cover of Zep’s Achellies(sp) Last Stand! Killer!
Could it get better? Yes! Jackyl kept everyone on the edge of their seats. A chainsaw and a bottle of crown can get anyone thru a set…
Not to mention singing the National Anthem thru the pickups of a guitar… Brilliant! Queensryche filled in for WASP who cancelled. Although Queensryche is not HAIR they are a great band who put on a super show. From a musical standpoint, they were very solid and entertaining. Thanks Queensryche! TWISTED F*c#ing SISTER ROCKED OUT BIG TIME !!! I could go on and on about TS. DEE was on fire and the band was smokin’

THANKS CATCH THE FEVER FOR THE AMAZING WEEKEND !!! LOOKING FORWARD TO 2008

I am hearing Bon Jovi - Night Ranger - Cinderella - etc….. ahhh Rumors….

House Of Hair Winner | 7/29/2007, 3:11 pm EST

Let me start by saying that this is a poor attempt at journalism. It’s taking quite a bit of self-control to not cuss up a blue streak. Were you even in the same state as the rest of us who went to Rocklahoma? If anyone would like to read a REAL review of Rocklahoma, go to House of Hair online and read MY blog (Kimberly’s Blog). And, Rob, if you don’t like 80s music, do us ALL a favor and call in sick next year. The bands of that era spoke for an entire generation when we weren’t able to speak for ourselves. Well, guess what? WE’RE TALKING NOW! These cookie-cutter bands today don’t even know how to tune a freaking guitar! Every band I saw that weekend had one thing today’s so-called “musicians” don’t have, and that is a true love for MUSIC!! See everyone next year! Rock on!

Sookey | 7/29/2007, 2:59 pm EST

Who the HELL is Rob Sheffield? How could he write an article like this? Was he even AT Rocklahoma? If he was, he must have spent most of time with his head up his ass!

wendyc21 | 7/26/2007, 1:08 pm EST

All right!! I am MAD!!
I have been to other festivals, usually much smaller, with way more security problems. According to local law enforcement, only 12 arrests made in almost a week of rock and roll, partying!
Rocklahoma was absolutely the most amazing thing i have ever been to. I am a professional living in Georgia. I am not living with my parents, I have 4 children in private school, and take care of my little bro’ since dad died! I met lawyers, psychologists, doctors, all professions and all types of backgrounds, from all over the world!!
Rocklahoma was indescribable, the absolutely wonderful people, the bands who came out to the camping and public areas to meet us, take pictures, sign autographs, WOW!
These bands made tons of money in their heyday, and are making tons of money, now. After all, demographically, we are one of the largest age groups! In 4 days, there were over 100,000 people who are fans of this music, buying merchandise, meeting the rock stars, and showing them how much they still mean to us!! An astronomical amount.. with probably more next year! This was an experience of a lifetime!
See everybody next year at ROK 2008!!

Smithsonian | 7/25/2007, 6:28 pm EST

Don Dokken said it best. That with all the stuff going on in the world people can still find a way to come listen to music. The guy that wrote this review shoulda passed if he didnt get what was going on.

Jenny | 7/25/2007, 4:12 pm EST

Rocklahoma was a great show. Writers like the one who did this piece of crap “review” for RS (which I have subscribed to for 20+ years) don’t get shows where people show up because they sincerely love the music, and not to be cool, or be seen. That’s why he wrote a distain dripping, inaccuracy ridden complaint about the very existence of the concert itself rather than an actual review, which, last time I checked, is his job. It is unfortunate that he works for RS.

amanda | 7/24/2007, 11:10 am EST

I am from oklahoma and in my 3rd year of college at osu I grew up listening to all these band and went to rocklhoma and had a blast will be back next year for sure I can’t beleive this article or the people getting on here writing crap about the bands and the people of this great state. Get a life we don’t get on your message boards and make fun of your choice in music. I listen to everything from country to rock but glam metal will always be my favorite and I don’t think in 20 years backstreet boys or diddy or any other band will be playing for 30,000 people that is what makes this music stand out. The bands play for the people not the money. They do it because they enjoy what they do and their fans. They are not like most singers or bands that do it to get rich and quit.
Poison still puts on a kickass show and so did all the bands Oh well I think once you have metal in you blood nothing will ever take its place I know I will be 90 and sitting in my rocking chair rocking out to metal nothing can take it place ever see everyone that rocks next year at rocklahoma 2008

Firebird1983 | 7/23/2007, 6:14 pm EST

The fans are correct. This article is not all fact. I was backstage all weekend, as part of the press. Jani did visit and was great. Jani signed autographs for everyone. Jani stopped at the radio booth and took pictures with fans. Jani talked to the press and said a reunion was possible. There was one confrontation; it was between a manager and former band. It always hurts fans, when a non fan reviews a concert. I have heard many bands say the same thing. When a fan says they suck it hurts. It hurts because the fan has something invested in the band. When it is just a random person from the press, they do not care. The writer of the article is not a fan. As stated before, Vince Neil did spend a lot of time off stage. One of the other photographers said this would happen. The bands were great in person. Poison and Vince were the only ones who stood up the press. Most artists seem to dislike the press. They are forced to wine them, dine them, and kiss their ass. Then they write garbage like this. The writer should be ashamed. Just remember there will always be haters. You must own what you love, and not care what they think. Rolling Stone must not count on readers being over fifteen. They need to keep a leash on their writers and verify their info. The bands said it was great to see old friends. I woke up each morning wondering what I was doing. After rocking all night and sleeping under the stars. I felt like I got beat up. By the end of the next night I knew why I was there. Oklahoma was great in my opinion. I went for a drive down route 66, before I flew out. I stopped and asked a lot of questions. The locals were great. Some people are offended, when called white trash. I take it as a compliment at this point in my life. I have found that the people with the least give the most. These people know what it is like to hurt. They will give anything to help others. If you think you are better then someone, because of their class. Then you have none.

Kunde | 7/23/2007, 3:31 pm EST

Rocklahoma was the best concert of all time. There is no one that can knock Steelheart. Ill be back in 08 of sure. Rock Never Dies!

Pete | 7/23/2007, 9:48 am EST

I love posts like Steven’s where he thinks he’s a real shit stirrin’ tough guy… “ooooo I’m under your skin and in your head”, wow, how cool is it to be above it all and exhibit such originality with the above quote… is that you Trent Reznor?

Music comes and goes in cycles, and every cycle has it’s good and bad… or are you one those guys that thinks “no way man, today’s music is for real!”… probably, you seem pretty stupid. At the very least you have some major self confidence issues that you thrive on showing your awesome keyboarding prowess. Oh your mom called, she said you need to mow the lawn before you get too involved with your World of Warcraft buddies, or no dessert tonight.

Frazzle | 7/22/2007, 11:39 am EST

Ya gotta love the haters that frequent the internet. Instead of looking up and posting about stuff they know and that makes them happy, they look for things to get them even more pissed off. They’re about as “Hard Core” as soaking wet nerf balls. I’d personally challange any of them to attend Rocklahoma and spout off even half the crap they type on a keyboard in the safety of moms basement. My guess is it would take less than 5 minutes to be on their way to the emergency room.

But… you just keep typing and being pissed off at the world because you can’t manage to escape mommy and daddys basement. Just keep being pissed off because you can’t get a decent job anywhere because of how you look and you’re piss poor outlook on the world. Stay pissed off because you’ll never graduate because you never attend your classes JUST because any type authority pisses you off to no end. Keep being pissed off because everyone around you has a better outlook on life and has managed to surpass you in every way… Looks, relationship, job, stability, etc… Just keep being pissed off because “THE MAN” keeps you down. Better stock up on Midol and Pacifiers, because it looks like you’ll need them.

For the people who attended Rocklahoma, I’m happy that all of you had a great time. I had to miss out due to my work schedule. I’ve been to smaller festivals with these bands and I’ve ALWAYS had a blast, so I can only imagine what something of this size had to offer.

Keep Rockin!

PS: The nitwit who wrote this article really needs to get his head outta his sphincter. These very bands are the ones that kept Rolling Stone going in the 80’s and early 90’s. They should be ashamed of how they actually published this steaming load of monkey dung.

Although I didn’t go and this music is not my thing, my daughter did go and she was a driver for some of the bands. She was treated with kindness and respect, and because of that I am now a fan and I wish the bands all the luck in the world. A special thanks to Kip and all the Winger crew, also thanks to L.A. Guns. My daughter came home alive and well. You all get to live and play awhile longer

She was treated with kindness and respect, and because of that I am now a fan and I wish the bands all the luck in the world. A special thanks to Kip and all the Winger crew, also thanks to L.A. Guns. My daughter came home alive and well. You all get to live and play awhile longer

Matt | 7/20/2007, 9:16 pm EST

Good job making Steven Adler look like an ass. Thumbs up.

T-town girl | 7/20/2007, 5:19 pm EST

I live in Tulsa and am amazed that people think is it a dump town! We have awesome acts that play at the historic Cain’s Ballroom. There are beautiful lakes and rivers all around the Tulsa area. For those not familiar, Tulsa is about 30 minutes from where Rocklahoma took place. Didn’t make the show, but heard it was a great time. I don’t understand why so many people are posting negative comments about the type of music and the state. Looks like you pesimistic people really do care or you wouldn’t waste your time posting negative comments. Go put on some skinny jeans, which by the way look terrible on guys, and get you some tickets to the Fall Out Boys or whatever other terrible wussy bands you like!

Jeff | 7/20/2007, 1:04 pm EST

Whatever. We can expect no less from this rag of a publication.

Steven | 7/20/2007, 4:02 am EST

You live down the road from from Rocklahoma huh? I noticed you didn’t say that you weren’t a hick, so my words must have hit pretty close to home huh Jed? Hilarious. Good stuff guys, really. I love how pissed off you’re all getting, keep it coming. Your anger sustains me.

It’s funny how worked up you guys are getting, and I think you know it’s because I’m right and there’s nothing that is going to change that. Deep down you know that your music is irrelavent slop, but you don’t want to admit it. I can say your music sucks because it’s my right to say it. It’s also my right to call you a bunch of cousin fucking hicks, especially since it’s true. I can say whatever the fuck I want to say and you’ll eat it up and like it. Just for the record, I am the villain. I am for the simple reason that I’m under your skin and in your head. Otherwise you wouldn’t have responded in the first place jackass. You can’t escape me any more than you can escape the fact that you’re defending music that sounds like retarded people fucking.

So I’m a loser because I’m writing posts on this site? As opposed to what you rejects are doing by answering me on the very same article? Looks like you can find the time out of your busy schedule of not living with your mom to do the same thing I do. Guess that means our living arrangements really have nothing to do with this discussion huh? Guess that means that it’s just your desperate attempt to win a losing argument by drawing attention away from the main point. You know I’m right. You know that you’re an inbred idiot who listens to shitty music. Just admit it, it’ll make you feel better.

Anyway I’d rather live with my mom and be intelligent and correct than be out living on my own and as stupid as you fucking people are. You couldn’t win an argument with Helen Keller. Whether I’m sitting in my suburban room, apartment living room, sun room, tanning room, mud room, wherever I may be typing from, it doesn’t change the fact that I’m right and you’re wrong and there’s nothing you can say that’s going to change that. Sorry to burst your bubbles.

Have a nice day.

So, we don’t have computers and are backwoods hicks? Get real buddy. Your lack of knowledge is evident. I happen to live down the road from the Rocklahoma venue and I have to say those attending the festival were awesome. You could not ask for a greater fan base. This festival rocked and will go down as the greatest music event of 2007.

I don’t know where you get your info from but, some of this stuff never happened, and I know it for a fact because I was there. Get your facts straight before spouting off a bunch of B.S. lies. For instance, how did Jani Lane get into it with Warrant on Sunday when they weren’t even at the festival or anywhere in Oklahoma for that matter? Also, Vince Niel’s set comprised mainly of him walking off stage for twenty minutes while his band played covers of zeppelin and black sabbath, wtf? This was a great festival, but you need to give props where they are due, knock the people that deserve to be knocked, and quit making up stories that never happened. There was enough real stuff that went on anyways.

Valerie~ | 7/19/2007, 8:27 pm EST

I’m surprised at this article by Rolling Stone magazine, inaccurate. Now wasn’t Rolling Stone the ones that were on Bret’s Tour bus having a great time and following Vince Neil and Dana Strum around with cameras the whole time? If you didn’t like the music, why were you even there??? To post THIS???

Just ask anyone of the 30,000+ fans that showed up from all over the world for Rocklahoma 2007. Rocklahoma 2008 will be even bigger & better. 80s metal is back to stay!!!!!

msladybug00 | 7/19/2007, 6:45 pm EST

I see nothing wrong with trying to relive your past a bit and enjoy yourself while listening to bands you loved back then.I went to Rocklahoma and I am from Oklahoma.Myself and all who went with me are educated people not the back hill country hicks some of you speak of.Just average americans who work ,have families and love music. Our genre of choice is hair bands who have by the way been working on new music as well as playing thier well deserved hits.I think you “haters” out there just need to stick to what you like instead of cutting down what others like. The writing of this rolling stones person is not accurate and he is misinforming people.Rocklahoma was fun for all,the music was great, food and drink was great and all the people were great.I personally met all the members of Firehouse and Jackyl and they were very nice men.To all who went and apprieciated Rocklahoma I cant wait till next time.

Jerry | 7/19/2007, 6:30 pm EST

The folks who gathered in the rolling green hills of Oklahoma during this party were among the most respectful, well mannered and hospitable bunch of people ever encountered. The VIP treatment, which was conducted in an air-conditioned tent the size of a football feild, included breakfast, lunch and dinner of prime rib, roast beef, BBQ brisket etc. We never had a wait time of more that 5 minutes. Complementary beer was served by volunteers! I spoke with people from many states and we all agreed that this level of science fiction could never be duplicated anywhere else. In my back yard (I live in Northern California) it would have been a bunch of cutting in line, constant whining, passed out drunks, gang problems, clatches of chicks with their stomachs hanging over their low-waste pants bagging on other women that don’t have the latest sandals on that happen to be talking to the “cute guy” etc.

As always with this type of music, musicianship was top-notch. The replacements for the non-participants (most notably the new singer for Skid Row) left us saying things like “Sebastian who?” and “Lynch what?” (that new dude in Dokken could have rolled off the presence on his Marshalls just a tad though). It just reiterates my old saying: The squeaky wheel gets the grease – the squeakiest wheel gets replaced. ‘Nuff said.

For the critics, humans ridicule things they do not understand so allow me to offer an ostensive explanation of what went on… Whatever music is playing in the background as your memories are being made, I sincerely hope all those bands will be able to converge 20 years in the future among like-minded folks with smiles on there faces, in excellent weather after you’ve gone though your “difficult” years. Even if the bands (and you) have outgrown the flannel, sideburns, cowboy boots or have gone bald… Don’t worry about things that don’t matter.

Hey, ya notice how I just ridiculed outdoor shows in Northern California? These aforementioned issues are things that I do not understand. I’m guilty.

See you all next year! Oh yea, don’t Meth around kids! You’re missing a lot of good stuff.

Peck | 7/19/2007, 6:20 pm EST

Steven, et.al.

You mock. yet you “waste” your time in venues such as these. Who is the bigger loser? The fans or the ones that complain about the fans? Get a life - find something that you actually enjoy other than mocking. We did.

The 80s were all about having fun… SEX, DRUGS, and ROCK ‘N’ ROLL. I’m sure you can really meet hot chicks and get laid while at a concert where angry “so called musicians” are jumping around and being pissed at the World! All you kidz like this screamo crap NOW cause you’re in your rebellious stage… wait until you grow up and have nothing to be pissed off about… all these bands will be gone! As far as talent… any monkey can be trained to bang out of tune strings on a guitar. The 80s had melodies, harmonies, and intricate structured songs with hooks. Music these days lack what it takes to make a memorable song. None of these bands can really pack an arena on their own anymore, that’s why we have Ozzfests and Lollapoloo… whatever! Record companies are failing cause they can’t sell this crap anymore. Bands in the 80s routinely sold millions of records. Nobody wants to work a crappy job all week and go hang out with angry people at a concert. It’s about getting away from it all and having fun. Poison is still headlining big venues cause they know how to make people have fun!

Seattle | 7/19/2007, 5:27 pm EST

Writer of this article is a hack. I could have did a better more honest write up 3 sheets to the wind and in a Coma. There is no way he was @ all 3 days (4 w/ Thurs included). Any one w/ a pulse that was there know what I’m talkin’ about. Over 4 days of this off-the-hook Rocklahoma Festival was the best ever. Yes… I’ve been to the Ozzfest and others… They can’t hold a candle to what I participated in last weekend. Over 100,000 people over the weekend. 2008 Rocklahoma will be even better which will be tough to do.

Anytime you have an open mike to post on, you’re going to get haters for no other reason than to hate just out of stupidity and boredom. all of us 35,000 folks per day know better.

BTW, yes the event was in Oklahoma, but not just Okies attended. People from all Fifty States in the union (this is a phrase used to state USA ya dork) were there, I even met Japanese, Spaniards (these folks are from Spain ya mook), Brits (these are British folks ya pip), Canadians and yup… the Aussies too.

“It’s only Ratt-n-Roll” but I love it.

See ya Rocklahoma 2008 (except you ya corn hole)

KixRules | 7/19/2007, 5:20 pm EST

Was Rob Sheffield even at the show? Warrant left Saturday night before Vince even hit the stage. Jani didn’t show up till Sunday. So where did this “shouting match” happen?

Johnny Solinger fronts Skid Row better then anything Bac is up to these days.

And Faster Pussycat was an embarrassment.

Evil Chuck | 7/19/2007, 2:48 pm EST

I was a teenager in the 80s and listened to some of these bands, although not all. I was more into Venom, Slayer, Exodus and similar groups. Either way, there was some good music that came from these bands. I find it disheartening to see all of the arguments for and against when it is just music, just music, after all. If you people devoted more time to politics and matters that are truely important in this country, maybe we could make a change to all of the BS that is going on in D.C. Educate yourself, get involved, make a difference, and stop dividing all of us. That is what has gotten us into this mess. Please.

CatHouse Girl | 7/19/2007, 12:38 pm EST

I thought the article was pretty true to what was going on at the show! LOL. I love 80’s music and pretty much all the bands that played this past weekend. You all have to remember that the 80’s were a time of decadence & silliness! I think that’s why we all still really love the music from the time period! Can’t wait til’ next year! Poison, Bang Tango, Twisted Sister & US 66 ROCKED THE HOUSE!

Josh Lent | 7/19/2007, 12:18 pm EST

It looked like Faster Pussycat had the plug pulled on them. They were being pretty offensive and it was probably pretty hard for some of the Oklahomans to handle, I thought Taime was hillarious and they rocked! They started to go into Bathroom Wall, they did the drum roll and then all the guitars went dead. They soon after left the stage. Rocklahoma was not quite ready for cancer jokes and referances to under age snatch. It’s a good thing WASP cancelled or the crowd might of stormed the stage like peasants chasing down Frankenstein’s monster after Blackie raped a nun, drank blood and gave us a taste of his politics. Rocklahoma may have been ready for pretty boy hair metal but I am not so sure they were ready for Shock Rock! Even Twisted Sister had some folks nervous and shaking in their shoes!!! SMF!!!

Henry Rollins | 7/19/2007, 12:07 pm EST

Dear Steven,
It’s easy to sit back in your suburban bedroom and post angry comments and rail against “stupid” music.
I just wanted to let you know that you can’t be that hardcore if your mom is still washing your black t-shirts and pants, and making you PB & J sandwiches (with the crust cut off, just how you like it).
Your’e not even close to being a villain…don’t give yourself so much credit.
Your just another angry kid with a computer.
I bet you don’t have too much luck with the ladies…right?
Just keep banging away on your keyboard if it makes you feel better, or may I suggest you rub one out to some good German porn.
just make sure you lock your door so your mom doesn’t catch you.
Good luck with the rest of your life…your’e gonna need it.

I cant believe they actuually got all of these incredibly in-demand bands to come togother in one place. State fairs across the mid-west were probably hurting for musical acts. rocklahoma sounds like the most shi*tastic idea ever. Anybody who acutualy respects hair metal has to be a backwoods freak.

Dyer Knight | 7/19/2007, 8:09 am EST

This artical is pure fluff, biased opinion and factually inncorrect. Jani Lane and Warrant never crossed paths let alone had an argument in the parking lot. Joe Leste was not in the beer tent during Winger’s performance of “Seventeen” either.
The journalistic integrity of this artical is non existant.

Sinn | 7/19/2007, 3:23 am EST

why would anyone want to drive to bfe Oklahoma to in the first place let alone listen to bands that were has beens 20 years ago.

Steven | 7/19/2007, 2:48 am EST

Heh heh heh, I love being the villain. I am a foul mouthed punk and proud of it. Figures that the inbred guy from Tulsa wants to fight me…I’m surprised they have computers out there…hell I’m surprised they have literate people out there. Congrats, your Gran-Daddy must be so proud Jethro. Do yourself a favor, if you’re from a trash hole like Tulsa, don’t try to defend a music genre like hair metal…it’s rediculously ironic.

Anyway, you guys are just mad because I’m right. You’re as retarded as the music you listen to. Why do you think they held this event in Oklahoma in the first place? They knew all the backwoods retards like you guys would eat that shit up like hotcakes. You’re right. I am mad at the world. I’m mad that there’s shitty music like this out there and people stupid enough to think it’s good.

I love how people get all mad at Nirvana like it was their fault that this shitty genre died out…don’t point the finger at Nirvana, point the finger at yourselves. You all had it coming. Do you really think it was a handful of not so talented bands from Seattle that ruined the whole thing for you? I don’t think so. Isn’t it more likely that your hair metal shit was lame, tired and played out? You guys just want a scapegoat because you think someone pissed in the punch and ruined your party. Well guess what guys…every party comes to an end at some point. And yours did. So deal with it.

God I love being the villain.

Coachella, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Rocklahoma….What?

I have been to each Coachella, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza and ACL since their inception. Rocklahoma was by far the best festival atmosphere I have ever experienced. I used to think that nothing could compare to Coachella. I have been proven wrong by some back woods, played out, has been, shallow, untalented and thoroughly kick-ass rockers. There was something very special going on out in the Oklahoma woods. If you choose to discount it or ignore it now, you will only have it shoved back in your face in years to come. The genre is as viable now as it was then. If you disagree, you have not been paying attention i.e Velvet Revolver, The Darkness, Buck Cherry, Avenged Sevenfold. Been to a screamo show lately? 80% of the 17 year old front men are sporting Maiden reprints. Smell the glove!

These are considered heavy metal bands all around the world - did you eat a brain tumor for breakfast. Sounds like maybe you are a little jealous, did your mommy not let you go to Rocklahoma? You sound like a real dumb ass.

Me and my sister went to the show and wuz blowed away by the awsumness of it! I had about 10 corn dogs and a bottle of jack danyulz. I wuz so waysted.
When Poison played evry rose has a thorn on it, me and my sister made out.

Hair metal rulez!
Peace to the boyz in Irak.

Rocklahoma Sunshine | 7/18/2007, 12:32 pm EST

Being from the area in Ne Oklahoma and growing up in the 80’s in a “hick” town, I was somewhat sceptical about the success of the project… HOWEVER.. This concert ROCKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It blew the Country Fever Festival out of the water. How many other towns can you go to and hear the bands that played… no some of them were not the best… Faster Pussycats comments on child porn was a bit much… but to be a part of history was incredible. Do you think the people that attended Woodstock still remember…. I will always remember what it was like to bang my head to Silver Bells with Twisted Sister in July.
To bad the reporter with Rollings Stones didnt have a more unbiased opinion… but… opinions are like !@$holes… everyone has one.

re: Steven | 7/18/2007, 12:18 pm EST

Steven, seeing your post at 3am and your overall tone it is obvious that you are a SMF! Like said in a earlier post…hope your momma does not find out what you have been doing on her computer at night…..wait, like your momma really cares….if she did she would not have raised such a filthy mouthed punk who is so mad at his own life that you try to find way to cut others down to make you feel better. Maybe you should just consider suicide and save all those around you.

Brad Coates | 7/18/2007, 11:50 am EST

In addition to my wife and I (42 & 44 years old) having a great time, my two boys (16 & 13 years old) had a great time! Most of the bands still sounded good. Yes, I’ve been listening to this music since it was new. I have a Motley Crue in the disc player as I type this. Most of today’s music (emo, screamo, pop) sucks! Some say that grunge killed the hair metal scene. I disagree. There are still plenty of people that buy the albums and attend the shows. I am looking for a new generation of musicians to hit the scene with this rowdy style. Criticize the genre if you choose but there was no lip synching or canned background music.

RockOn | 7/18/2007, 11:46 am EST

Rocklahoma was like a huge private party with 35000 of your best friends. 99% of the bands sounded great and I cant wait to do it again!

I traveled from Oklahoma City to Pryor for Rocklahoma, and, I have to say, it was by far the best music festival I’ve been to. I was very impressed with the VIP perks, stage set-up, employees, etc. Besides the fact that the shows kicked some major ass, I have never experienced such an awesome crowd. Everyone was having a great time and in the four nights I was there, no problems. :) I will definately being going again!

(And getting to hang with Brett Michaels in his RV after Poison Friday, was pretty awesome too.)

Seems like musicians nowadays feel pressure to be apathetic and socially conscious, just like rock critics….Hair metal is about having fun and forgetting your problems! I love it!

Steven | 7/18/2007, 3:32 am EST

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…hair bands are not metal, okay? And as some idiot said, “even though it’s cheesy it’s still metal.” I call that a bunch of bullshit. Heavy metal is Deep Purple and Black Sabbath. Not Cinderalla or Twisted Sister or any other of those other tarts dancing around on stage in womens underwear and spandex. They’re the fucking Backstreet Boys of metal.

Everyone is saying, “wow, 30,000 people came!” Let me tell you mullet-wearing, beer swilling idiots something: Just because 30,000 people went to this festival means nothing. It just means that 30,000 people are stupid as fuck. Congrats on being a complete embarassment. And hey, if you get offended by this, you’re probably one of them.

Jacob | 7/18/2007, 2:10 am EST

Rolling Stone is so biased and full of crap. Man, Twisted Sister said it right. 80’s bands sold more albums, shirts, shows, and made more money than any other genre. They kept rock alive in the 80’s. What thanks did they get? They got ridiculed and forgotten. Twisted Sister said they will never get into the Rock N’ Roll Hall Of Fame. They said F them. It’s all about rock anyway. All they need is their fans and we will never stop supporting them.

Just so you know, I’m 23. I’m not trying to relive the past. I’m just trying to escape the hell that wretched bands like Nirvana and their grunge brethren unleashed on this world. I hate all Grunge/Alternative/Nu-Metal/Em o/Screamo etc. I always have and I always will. Thank God Hair Metal saved me. Those guys are my heroes and I will support them forever.

We made a statement at Rocklahoma. We will no longer be ignored.

Regardless what kind of music you like this was one of the best things for music in the Midwest in a long time. Oh F that.. i’m so F%*$#&@ glad it was 80’s rock ! This was one of the best run events i’ve seen. A few more porta potty’s an some work on the P.A / soundboard an it will be unbeatable. I look forward to next year.

re: JP | 7/17/2007, 9:06 pm EST

Sounds like you may be way past your prime and haven’t done anything new or interesting in about 20 years.
I hope you can get some help :-)

Wildheart | 7/17/2007, 9:01 pm EST

New bands. A British /Spanish group called Gypsy Pistoleros opened the festival and blew us away! It was worth it to discover such a diamond find. Plus we all rock n Rolled all night and partied every day. It was FUN, do you not get it? miserable sad lived creatures.

Good Times | 7/17/2007, 8:32 pm EST

Rocklahoma was great, although I am saddened to see that there are so many pathetic people from that era that would find such an event “disheartening”. I am glad that the bands, myself and 30,000 others who attended the show and many, many others who would have gone if the venue was located closer to them, still have enough energy and fun left in us to know how to have a good time. You know your getting old when you think or feel like you have outgrown your friends and you have lost the desire to get out of your house and have a good time.

JP | 7/17/2007, 8:05 pm EST

I still like hair metal. It’s no longer something I listen to consistently anymore. I smile and sing along when I hear one of my favorite songs from the era. For me, it would be really disheartening to attend a four day concert featuring rock bands that are way past their prime and haven’t done anything new or interesting in about 20 years.

David | 7/17/2007, 7:22 pm EST

I waited 20 years for that concert - it was awsome! I will be back next year for sure. Hundreds of people I talked with over the weekend only one couple from NY had anything negative to say. I know a lot of people that are planning on going next year that didn’t make it this time. Twisted Sister was funnier than the comedian - awesome show! Thank you!!!

only1way2rock | 7/17/2007, 5:32 pm EST

I was there. Drove from Minneapolis. I’m 27, so I wasn’t trying to relive my youth. These bands included plenty of talented musicians that know how to put on a kick ass stage show. Know why these bands are still around? They rock. That’s why.

Why don’t hairmetalbands get some more respect? maby the lyrics aren’t always that deep but you can say the same thing about (for example) AC/DC and this comes form a huge AC/DC fan. When the 80 began, I wasn’t even born yet but I still love hairmetal. Not for the nostalgia (because I even havn’t got any) but because I like the genre of music. yeah, there also alot better than all those emo bands by the way.

F L F | 7/17/2007, 4:31 pm EST

rocklahoma was all about the party the MAN left you alone and the bands rocked except faster pussycat what a bunch jerkoffs ok the sound system was not working up to your standards and TAIME DOWNS was waisted so how do you fix this, you storm off the stage after half a set and screw the fans, mabey they should go back to the cathouse and play to twenty drunks and don’t waiste 30,000 fans time cant wait for 08

cRAIG | 7/17/2007, 4:09 pm EST

To Steven,

Most of these bands are metal to some extent: whether you call it pop metal, glam metal, cheese-metal - whatever. And using Cinderella as your prime example shows ignorance. They happen to be a very talented band musically (especially Tom Keifer). They can also be very heavy. I’ve been to hundreds of live shows over the years (not just this genre), and I’d put them up against pretty much anybody. Just because they aren’t Slayer or Metallica doesn’t mean they don’t rock. Cinderella, Skid Row, Motley Crue, etc. I’ll stick up for them any day…

heartbreak station | 7/17/2007, 2:38 pm EST

Cinderella–wonder why they weren’t there. they were the only ones really missing. we all need a little shelter! maybe their GYPSY ROAD can’t TAKE THEM HOME!

cRAIG | 7/17/2007, 2:37 pm EST

damn, i wish i coulda been there. and as far as the writer goes, as a long-time fan of this genre - i’ve seen much worse treatement…

Winona | 7/17/2007, 2:34 pm EST

Hair metal will always be one of my main guilty pleasures… why, oh why didn’t I hear about this festival sooner? What better way is there to introduce my infant daughter to some craptastic music?!

Cancelled Subscription | 7/17/2007, 1:09 pm EST

Why doesn’t Rolling Stone send out a journalist who has an open mind? Rob Sheffield obviously doesn’t like this genre of music. Shame on Rolling Stone for alienating the millions of melodic rock listeners and the 45 thouseand people who attended this event.

HeadLine 2008 | 7/17/2007, 11:26 am EST

VAN HALEN , AC/DC and GUNS and ROSES

re: ERic, Steven | 7/17/2007, 10:01 am EST

You guys are grounded, now go to your rooms until Mommy has your dinner cooked, and first thing tomorrow you are going to borrow mommy’s car to go find a job and start showing some responsibility!
Who cares what sort of musical genre this is given, call it what you want any time you put 30 old bands together (at least 1/2 of them were big time bands of their day) in front of 30,000 people you are going to have a show that pleases all (as this one did).

Scott | 7/17/2007, 9:25 am EST

Whether you like the music or not, some credit should be acknowledged that these guys are still playing, and people are still coming out to see them. Can either be said of Hinder, Fall Out Boy (and the rest of their ilk) in 20 years? Time will tell of course, but I highly doubt it.

ERic | 7/17/2007, 8:49 am EST

People only wanted to go to this crap because it made them feel like it was 1987 again.

Cheesecrop | 7/17/2007, 7:58 am EST

Cool.

Jeremy | 7/17/2007, 7:25 am EST

I don’t understand why people have such negative feelings toward these bands and I never did. At least they play their own instruments and don’t try to throw out a bunch of mock-sincere “statements”. (…and this is coming from an old school punk guy).

What’s wrong with music existing just for fun? I look at the charts today and do NOT see much fun - just a bunch of producer created lip-synchers out for a buck.

Steven | 7/17/2007, 4:22 am EST

To people who call this heavy metal, I must say, you’re sadly mistaken.

All these bands listed here sucked then and they suck now. Metal? Are you kidding me? These guys are about as metal as Avril Lavigne. And before you call me out on that, I have one word for you: Cinderella. I rest my case.

Mark | 7/17/2007, 2:04 am EST

This genre of music is what Rock n Roll is all about. Fun, Sex, and having a great time. Some people just don’t get the concept.

Damn, I wish I was there.

"Cinderella" | 7/17/2007, 12:21 am EST

Doesn’t make the list? You must be joking.

Always something missing | 7/17/2007, 12:17 am EST

Where’s Cinderella? By far, the best of them Rockbutterfly

Mij | 7/17/2007, 12:04 am EST

Traveled 10 hours one way and back. I was so impressed with the whole show, good or bad. I will do it again next year. I just can not get over how well the crowd was. I guess us old people really do know how to party, look who taught us.

Loosers | 7/16/2007, 11:33 pm EST

Seems the new generation of punks don’t even like to hear about a great festival of 80’s rock that totally kicked tail and provided great entertainment for 30,000 people each day. I could probably understand some punk knocking a concert with a few old bands, but this show had almost 30! Just like Enjoyer mentioned in a prev post, the new age punks would rather talk about self destruction instead of about having a good time!

The Dude | 7/16/2007, 9:51 pm EST

They may have been more style than substance but 20 years later most of those songs hold up really well. Probobly because most of those bands could actually play their instruments.

Everybody in the eighties listened to those bands. Some people are just too uptight to admit it. It was good time party music-back when bands didn’t whine about their girlfriend breaking up with them or how they hate themselves.
i’ll take cindarella over hinder any day of the week.

JadePistolero | 7/16/2007, 6:51 pm EST

I was at Rocklahoma. What a party! Some bands didnt do so great. Faster Pussycat is unfortunatly one of them but 99% of them rocked. Dokken, Quiet Riot, Poison all rocked and Twisted Sister was awesome. Not to mention some new faces on the American scene….the Gypsy Pistoleros. Dont like it do go. Leaves more room for the 35,000+ that love it!!

Tony Clifton | 7/16/2007, 6:43 pm EST

To all the haters out there who say that this music is dead, suck my knob! Throughout the history of metal, there have always been those who declare it dead at every opportunity. The fact is that metal will live forever and there’s not thing one that any of you can do about it. Long after the current top of the charts bands have become nothing but footnotes in music history, there will still be heavy metal, thank God!

elSCORCHO | 7/16/2007, 6:19 pm EST

aaaahhh. Hair Metal. It reminds me of leather, hair spray, spandex and the band Cinderella.

Im sure all the nu metal bands of the late 90’s, and the emo crap bands of today are gonna be doing concerts like this 20 years from now.
hahah!

tommy vee | 7/16/2007, 6:02 pm EST

come on there’s nothing like a hair band hook and chorus

? | 7/16/2007, 5:43 pm EST

I live in northeast Oklahoma, and this festival was terrific!

For one weekend, all the morons left town to listen to horrid hair metal more than a decade past its expiration date.

The rest of us stayed behind and had a blast!

your mom | 7/16/2007, 5:28 pm EST

Rob Sheffield is my personal hero and has the greatest job in history.

Porky | 7/16/2007, 5:15 pm EST

Actually it was 110,000 and not 30,000 that showed up. Also the crowd came from 50 states and 13 different countries.

Absolutely awesome 4 days of music. Even the few bands that might not of been as good as they once were, were still fun to listen to.

Can’t wait for Rocklahoma 2008!

axl rules | 7/16/2007, 4:53 pm EST

80s rock was the best, some of my best memories are from that era. It was good times, good friends, and good music!

DBRiley99 | 7/16/2007, 4:46 pm EST

Steven Adler….haahahahha even if they AXL did cut the BS and put stuff back Sorum anyway. What a MORON

Scotty | 7/16/2007, 4:43 pm EST

It’s all just fun, saw Poison last month. The place was packed, chicks galore, they sang along to every song………..I can’t dog em’, they won

Bigdave | 7/16/2007, 4:28 pm EST

Enjoyer, the hair metal scene died becuase the music was generic and adolescent. Most of us grew up and moved on.

Anonymous | 7/16/2007, 4:17 pm EST

There’s no denying that this would be a blast in a hilarious tongue planted firmly in cheek kind of way.

Enjoyer | 7/16/2007, 4:00 pm EST

Yeah, and I finally have to admit that I prefer all these 80’s bands rather than Nirvana, Radiohead, Beck and all the “respectables” artists of the 90’s who used to sing : “I’m a creep”, “I’m a looser” and “I hate myself and I want to die”…
In fact, all the hair metal bands disappeared because of their appearance and not because of their music.
And Grunge music was in reality Hard Rock music which did not want to admit it.

Ratt!!! | 7/16/2007, 3:54 pm EST

People can say what they want, but those bands are so much better than the emo crap today. Are they better than grunge and post grunge, brit pop etc….probably not but at least they sing about what most people think about anyway. Girls, partying, drink and drugs!!

What fun years they were back in the 80’s in highschool.

Fall Out Boy & Panic at the Disco in 20 years???? crickets will be chirping louder!

Bill Bones | 7/16/2007, 3:51 pm EST

they call us problem child, we spend our lives on trial, we stand and we wont fall, we’re one and one for all, we write things on the wall, we……

Jeremy | 7/16/2007, 3:46 pm EST

Ugh. I hate hair metal.

JP | 7/16/2007, 3:33 pm EST

I was a teenager in the late ’80’s and was a fan of hair metal. Yet, I grew up and moved on. I can’t remember the last time I played a Motley Crue album or anyone else from that era. To echo Grace Slick’s sentiments about old rockers, it’s really sad to see old people try to revive a youth that has past them by. There are alot of great rock bands out there today. In fact, the last month I bought new albums by The White Stripes, Cold War Kids, Maroon 5, and Linkin Park. I guess nostalgia is more valuable to some people than others.

Bob | 7/16/2007, 2:25 pm EST

Awesome. Awesome. Awesome.

Ardie | 7/16/2007, 2:22 pm EST

This glam rock era is way better than the present “Tin Can” sound of those rock bands we have nowadays.
How I wish I was there…

SMF | 7/16/2007, 1:53 pm EST

What happened to Twisted Sister???

Krx | 7/16/2007, 1:40 pm EST

Wow wish i was there. Listening to those band gives me some bitter sweet nostalgia.

john | 7/16/2007, 1:29 pm EST

i was a teenager in the 90’s and thank god I got into music in 1992 back when there were still good rock and metal bands…1994-present day has been the most bland period of music in the history of the world

uhhh | 7/16/2007, 1:22 pm EST

Metal? who cares…I’m glad I wasn’t a teenager in the 80’s.

PAUL WILKINSON | 7/16/2007, 1:19 pm EST

I thought the highlight of the weekend was the Vince Neil set and their version of the classic Zep tune “Whole Lotta Love”. I about flipped out when their guitarist whipped out the violin bow. Very cool!

Tracy Gunns | 7/16/2007, 1:10 pm EST

My band LA Gunns is way cooler than G-n-R. Listen to “Ballad of Jane” if you disagree.
