Farewell to Girlschool’s Kelly Johnson (1958-2007)

7/16/07, 5:18 pm EST

kelly JohnsonA righteous farewell to Kelly Johnson, the phenomenal lead guitarist for Girlschool, who died yesterday after a six-year battle with cancer of the spine. She was 49. Johnson will always be remembered for writing metal classics like “Hit and Run,” “Kick It Down” and “Yeah Right,” which made Girlschool one of the punkiest and fiercest bands to blow up in the late-‘70s/early-‘80s new wave of British heavy metal. They had their biggest U.K. hit with their 1981 St. Valentine’s Day Massacre EP, a collaboration with their friends in Motörhead. According to legend, the first time Jeff Beck heard Johnson’s riffs on “Race With the Devil,” he snorted, “There’s no way that’s a girl playing,” but Girlschool fans worshipped Johnson for her cool Aladdin Sane-style mullet and her bag of magnesium-flare guitar hooks. Her old pal and tourmate Lemmy from Motörhead had this to say a few years ago: “I thought they were fucking great. I got them on the tour in the first place and everybody else went like, ‘ugh, girls,’ and I said, ‘fuck you, they’re as good as you.’ Kelly Johnson, on a good day, is as good as Jeff Beck in his rock & roll days. She’s a fucking brilliant guitar player.” Here’s a clip of Kelly singing and playing “C’Mon Let’s Go” with Girlschool live on German TV in 1981. She will be missed.

I am semi-familiar with Girlschool and they did rock. I am vaguely familiar with Lemmy from Motorhead and based on the above comments, he TRULY rocks.

The world has lost a great talent, and does not even know it.

Godspeed Kelly Johnson, you were one of the greats.

Love what you said Lita! Girlschool band is awesome, second to none, and have been around for ages, and still Rocking today. The Ladies from Girlschool are down to earth, and will rock your socks off! I broke down in tears, as I am sure many of us did, when I heard just moments later, of her death. I guess the old saying still holds true, the good die young.

My favourite hard rock guitarist ever. Used to follow Girlschool round the UK with my mate for years.
Pity they weren’t just starting out today, they might have got alot more of the recognition they deserve.
Kelly Johnson, riff machine, shiny, complex star, there’s a lot of us won’t forget her and that gorgeous
Gibson roar.

Gaz | 7/18/2007, 10:17 am EST

Saw Girschool probably 10 or 12 times in 1980-81. Just awesome. antastic live band and the first album is just the best all female rock album EVER. Some of the best live gigs ever and the guys from Motorhead used to turn up to some of the gigs. They were very supportive. RIP Kelly, couldn’t believe it when I just found out.

Last one. If left confused, I use aliases, lots of ‘em. Shh…it’s a secret, tell EVERYBODY!!! And I’m everywhere. This second one I wrote because you like my name…you do,you really do! Like a faithful dog if you pat me on the head, I try to wrap myself around your leg! And I want someone to READ MY STUFF. So strap in, this plane’s about to take off. Enjoy your drinks in those tinkly icy glasses. Ignore the NO SMOKING signs. But the O2 masks don’t work, and I have no idea where the Exit doors are. Found ‘em? Forget it. They’re WELDED SHUT! Thanks, Gene. It’s always good to hand with a rock star who knows how to keep a captive audience! I hope this makes no sense–Rockbutterly

Kelly was truly magnificent on stage. She weilded her Les Paul like an extention of her persona; wild, liberated, full of passion and fire. As a person she has/ had no equal in her lack of ego or ability to embrace and engage people from all walks of life. A one-off, she’ll be sadly missed by many.

The world has lost one of the best guitar players ever to strap on a Gibson. Kelly was the most beautiful person I have ever had the encounter of knowing. In a day and age where everything is about money, fame and carbon copied riffs, Kelly and Girlschool has always done it for the MUSIC first and foremost and can blow any band today off the stage. She is a legend, an icon and one hell of an amazing human being and she is now a part of rock and roll history along with Hendrix, Rhoads and Bolan. We love you and we miss you Kel! You will NEVER be forgotten. xoxo

When I first heard Hit and Run back in the day, I was hooked. As a guitar player I would sit in front of my stereo trying so hard to learn Kelly’s solos. What an inspiration and a beautiful soul Kelly was. I saw every show when they came to town and I had the pleasure of meeting Kelly. She was the one of those people who makes you feel right at home immediately. Very down to earth and and very sweet. I was devastated when I heard she she had passed away.
“Kelly, thank you from the bottom of my heart. Your inspiration, friendship and light will shine on in my heart forever. I miss you SO much. I’ll cherish you in my heart forever. xx
Rock the Heavens, Kelly!!”

Girlschool cut through the sexist crap that girls could not play. Kelly was a true great. sadly missed by all who saw/knew her.

St. Joey | 8/10/2007, 5:04 am EST

Pals of mine always seemed baffled by my listening to Girlschool & that tall, skinny, guitarist with the blonde mop. For me, Kelly Johnson’s guitar playing was just beyond… …it all. She played with a prowess, style & conviction that just lit up her Les Paul & Marshall. Cool too, is that a lot of her riffs just seemed right off the cuff… that’s a rarity these days. If you wouldn’t listen to her *because she was a girl* it was probably ’cause you were jealous. F’ that, I listened & let her make her impression on me. Go to Youtube or Myspace… listen to her wail… she’ll make an impression on you too :) Ciao for now suckas

St. Joey | 8/10/2007, 2:07 pm EST

BTW, I elected not to include an ‘RIP’ or a ’she’ll be missed’ because through music, you live forever… & Kelly Johnson is indestructible fo sho

I saw Girlschool many times back in the early eighties dunstable, camden eletric ballroom etc and they could rock better than most.Kellys guitar playing was brilliant and she certainly looked the part. They were a breath of fresh air.A sad loss

yaron israel | 8/29/2008, 4:41 pm EST

very sad moment,

I saw Girlschool in israelat 1883
it was amazing

Mert | 9/28/2008, 8:37 pm EST

That was a really bad lost. She was a legend in my eyes and i guess in lots of people too. She rocks mann for example “race with devil” created by the gunn after covered by judas priest and it was the same as the original one ad thennn girlschool covered it, the song changed those guitar riffs made the song rock!!! RIP Kelly Johnson

I still can’t believe it, Kelly was such a talent, I was so sad to hear the way she passed on, a painful way to go,I’m so sorry for her friends and family. I met Kelly a few times while they toured in the early 80s and her and the rest of the girls were always great. I am still a huge Girlschool fan.
