Dispatch at Madison Square Garden: What Does a Three-Piece Jam Band Do Behind the Scenes?

7/16/07, 6:48 pm EST

Over the weekend, scores of suburban teens donned their finest Abercrombie and Hollister duds and headed to Madison Square Garden to catch the newly reunited pseudo-jam-band Dispatch, who now hold the record as the first independent band in history to sell out the 20,000-capacity venue. (To put this in perspective: tickets are still available for the White Stripes’ gig next week at the same place.) The Boston three piece, reunited for the first time since 2004, got back together a good cause — all proceeds from the shows will benefit Zimbabwe, which is ravaged by AIDS, poverty and social injustice.

On Friday, Dispatch played a three-hour set of crowd favorites, including the sing-along anthem “The General” and the relaxed white-boy reggae tune “Ride A Tear.” But the highlights came when they performed a three-song minit set atop their first touring van in the middle of the Garden as well as the chorus of Zimbabwean kids who joined the band for “Outloud.” While the guys in Dispatch aren’t necessarily virtuoso musicians, Friday’s show was a triumphant celebration of youth in all it’s promiscuous, stoned, boozed-up glory. On Saturday, we caught up with the band after they finished up their soundcheck to ask them about their pre-show rituals — and how their friends reacted to the news that Dispatch had sold out the Garden.

finally some real music getting recognition on Rollingstone. no more fall out boy, panic at the crapco crap, CONGRATULATIONS ROLLING STONE!

Red O | 7/17/2007, 12:04 am EST

Wow… this band is so interesting… YAWN.

I never thought I would say this, but, I think I prefer Panic at the Disco to these guys.

Rob D. | 7/17/2007, 12:34 am EST

I think anyone who yawns at dispatch needs to be checked for narcolepsy. Obviously there are about 60,000+ people who filled the MSG three nights in a row who feel differently, and another 110,000+ who agree who happened to be in Boston three years ago. Not too bad for never bowing to corporate america

good music | 7/17/2007, 12:35 am EST

Red O…you’re an idiot. Keep listing to your panic charlotte boy music. The guys in Dispatch are real musicians who play GREAT music.

Jake | 7/17/2007, 8:54 am EST

Why is it everytime a band that happens to play what is termed “jam”, I assume this is a response to the fact that every song doesn’t end at around 2 minutes and 30 seconds with roughly one bridge and 2.5 choruses is chastised by this publication. Yes, rash generalizations work wonders, everyone in the audience probably was wearing Abercrombie and Hollister, very astute observation Kevin. Top notch writing. I’m curious to know if you’ve even listened to any of their songs which speak nothing of promiscuity or getting drunk and stoned. It’s sad that no musicians can get any sort of respect from this magazine because they are not “cool” enough. Just keep listening to the next buzz band and reporting on them and how they’ll never sell out MSG or do anything for relief in Africa.

Man, my freshman year of college, I think “Gut The Van” was about the only thing I listened to. Then came word these boys were calling it quits, splitting and doing their respective solo things. It’s nice to see they’re somewhat still at it. Might be nice to turn out some new material though.

Much like Kiss, this is the kind of band that should’ve avoided studio albums altogether, because the live stuff was far superior.

best show i’ve ever been to

The most incredibly musicians of this generation. They create COMPLETELY orginal music, meaningful lyrics, and all 3 are incredibly dynamic. Dispatch is alive. Most bands these days are robots.

This show was one of the most amazing shows I have been to.. and I go to a lot of shows

Dispatch did not make $1 off this show so it was all for charity..

Tickets were below average price and the crowd was also great!

Tere | 7/20/2007, 12:20 pm EST

amazing band
Best concert ever

lastoneshot | 7/22/2007, 1:13 am EST

yea, kevin you are dumb. not every dispatch fan is a stoned out hollister wearing drunkard. those are the OMGZ GENERAL fanboys. what about us full on die hards? the die hards that dont think the general is the greatest thing to hit the earth and we dont listen to dispatch to be cool, but listen to them because of the quality of music and appreciate their hard work and dedication to make amazing music and to persue what the believe in? what would you call them? id say a large majority of the people that went to these concerts had no idea what it was for but went to party and to say they went to dispatch. thats just my opinion, but hey what do i know?

Allen | 7/24/2007, 2:42 pm EST

Kevin,

The only thing that is interesting about this article is that.. Rolling Stone let you actually put it up under their reputable name.

Way to stereotype a fan-base that I am willing to bet that you know nothing about.

This band deserves way more credit than this and I think that anyone besides you would admit.

To those that think Panic! At the Disco is better than this band.. we all laugh at you and smile..

Have a GREAT day.

Best experience of my life. I’ve been a die hard fan ever since I started listening a few years back. I didn’t even know about Dispatch until after Hatch Shell, so I always wondered if I would get a chance to see them play. Panic at the Disco, along with almost all other music nowadays, is nothing compared to Dispatch. Nothing.

I must say that I am a bit of a concert conosur. I have seen many great bands (eric clapton, bob dylan, aerosmith) but none compare to the experience of Dispatch Zimbabwe. The only thing that I could almost compare it to was seeing Third Eye Blind (you may disagree but they also are a great live performer and they have a great acoustic set). While seeing Dispatch I just listened with awe and disbelief. While in the crowd (of mostly 16-22 year old kids who herd that Dispatch was good form this guy who they met at OAR and then downloaded “the general” on iTunes) I felt like I was a part of something else, HISTORY! I conclude with this; For me, Dispatch is not just music. It is inspiration, its a feeling, it’s something so much more than most people really understand. On the third night while concluding with “the General” I was actually choked up. In a way I guess for me dispatch is like rain in Africa in the sense that Dispatch is so important to me and this was the end, the end of something great that gave life to thousands (and If you don’t believe me just check it out on youtube. The energy was amazing!)

I guess that all we can do now is hope and pray for another return of the best unsigned band ever.

-Chris

brian | 9/12/2007, 1:06 pm EST

All i have to say is wow. I have been listening to dispatch since the 90’s when i was at middlebury with them. And Zimbabwe was the best show i have seen by them and anyone else. As for the coment of Abercrombie wearing i dont think i saw one person with that stuff on so next time you write a story on one of the greatest bands send someone who knows a little something about the band. And Red O go mosh pit wiht your tight jeans on

brian | 9/12/2007, 1:10 pm EST

best show since phish at coventry

Anonymous | 5/4/2008, 10:15 am EST

i have been a huge fan for ever this is the best band alive
panic at the Disco sucks.

Jess | 5/19/2008, 11:08 pm EST

How is it that Rolling Stone manages to give terrible reviews to truly innovative bands and continues to praise mediocrity? How many other bands educate their audience during their shows? I was a part of night two at MSG and I didn’t see a bunch of hollister wearing drunks. I saw a youthful generation enjoying some good tunes and supporting a great cause. Hey Kevin O’donnell, get your eyes checked will ya?

Hey!! | 5/31/2008, 1:04 pm EST

hollister sux.

dispatch on the other hand, is an amazing band that played the best show i ever seen.

Really People? | 6/4/2008, 1:08 am EST

While I find what they did for Zimbabwe fantastic. There music is just not good. How dare they call this band a jam band. Every song sounds the same. You frat boys keep thinking THIS is what good music is. Oh look another guy in Hollister and sandals. Whitest, fratiest concert since an OAR show.

hmmmm | 11/15/2008, 1:43 am EST
