System of a Down Bassist Plans “Revolutionary” Social Network/Record Label

7/12/07, 9:35 am EST

system of a downMySpace, you officially have some massively goateed competition: System of a Down bassist Shavo Odadjian is introducing urSession.com, an online community that doubles as a record label. “It’s the first online label to actually audition artists via audio uploads and video uploads,” Odadjian explains. And in true democratic SOAD fashion, the people will have a voice: “I thought if urSession could be a big art-district community, so then the community votes for who I sign. So after a 10-month, 11-month running of artists, whoever gets the most votes, I go over and I sign.”

The site proclaims it is “urEntertainment (R)evolution” and “not ur dad’s A&R” and invites would-be users to “join the revolution” when it launches later this month or in early August. At least for now, the label is strictly digital, though Odadjian said he has spoken with labels about other options. System of a Down has been on hiatus since last year, and Odadjian says he’ll direct videos and continue to work on Achozen, his side project with Wu-Tang’s RZA, in addition to his work with urSession.

In your song B.Y.O.B in the first verse is it “My god is of bible blood with pointed ears” or “Barbarisms by barbaras with pointed heels.”?

SiLLybo, what’s wrong with having one more site? TechnicaLLy, it may not be revoLutionary, but any change is better than none. PersonaLLy I wouLd rather have his (Shavo’s) bookmarked instead of a coLd name Like “musicnation.”

in response to “slim jim,” myspace already IS corporate. they’re owned by fox broadcasting.

Funky | 7/13/2007, 7:46 pm EST

whoever asked why a musician would wanna wait 10-11 months and compete…you act like that it aint how it already is. why would you waste time tryna go to all them label heads who don’t even kno what real music is anymore? take it straight ot the people. 10-11 months is real talk. why would anyone wanna sign a onehit wunder? these cats arejust makin sur ethere are some fans out there that’ll last and be there. yo keep it up shavo

slim jim | 7/13/2007, 6:16 pm EST

yeah and myspace doesnt really hvae a strong legit backer with street cred like S.O.A.D. or wu-tang or whoever else is in it. even myspace is gettin corporate with there movie sponsorships putting crap on the homepage. this label is straight up from a fellow musician. seems less shady

bryan | 7/13/2007, 5:00 pm EST

myspace is fading to facebook and facebook doesn’t have music. this sounds like it has a lot of potential. it’s definitely worth a try for aspiring artists. heck, i might try it myself.

musik is fo lyfe | 7/13/2007, 3:56 pm EST

i wonder if shavo cud get RZA involved too!? that’d be sick as shit! i dun think theres ne real online music opportunities for rappers. i’m down!

lauren | 7/13/2007, 2:57 pm EST

y is evryone focusin on SOAD? this sounds like a great idea no matter whose behind it. i agree w/ Busta - stop hatin!

Odys Coltrane | 7/13/2007, 1:23 pm EST

Little known fact, all winners will have to sport braided goatees.

Jacob | 7/13/2007, 12:58 pm EST

“whose own band can barely stay afloat in the music business”

ok….i’m no SOAD fan, but evebn i know that they have at least 3 platinum albums and major sold out work tours under their belt. i’d hardly call them struggling.

imagine | 7/13/2007, 11:32 am EST

I saw Shavo’s interview on Fuse about ursession. This article doesn’t cover the complete story…they share ad revenue with artists too and bunch of other stuff.its pretty cool actually. gotta give props.

Busta | 7/13/2007, 11:04 am EST

other site’s mentioned here force you to sign with them…urSession.com is a place to be discovered by anyone…stop hating…do you work for the other site…I think so…pretty obvious…and there’s a difference between a gimmick site like the ones mentioned and one that actually tries to help

Perennial | 7/13/2007, 11:03 am EST

Like any modern-day “revolution,” this idea exists already and is hardly a revolution.

Sillybo | 7/13/2007, 10:54 am EST

I’ve heard of this … it already exists … it’s called www.Musicnation.com.

And if memory serves, you, Mr. SOD bassist, were ON that site. Rip off, anyone?

SunnyD | 7/13/2007, 2:28 am EST

It’s a great idea and naysayers should hold their opinions until site launches. SOAD is a Grammy award winning, multi-platinum selling - Rick Rubin produced band. It’s hardly struggling to stay afloat. Give me an f’ning break. urSession will rock!

MusicIsLife | 7/12/2007, 10:51 pm EST

YES YES YES!!! Can’t wait.

music fan | 7/12/2007, 10:21 pm EST

can’t wait. . . sounds like it’ll be a real cool site

ben | 7/12/2007, 8:52 pm EST

pretty freakin cool!

PG | 7/12/2007, 8:52 pm EST

That’s a sweet idea! will check it out and see what the buzz is about

jerry | 7/12/2007, 8:51 pm EST

This sounds like the new wave of the future…

nicolau borges | 7/12/2007, 12:48 pm EST

gosto

Jaosn | 7/12/2007, 12:22 pm EST

It’s a good idea but not revolutionary. A&R people are using myspace to look for new talent these days. The question is how much money does the guy from SOAD have to putinto his label. Will the label who reps his band help withthe project? If so then this is completely viable however artists should be at least wary so as not to sign on with a vanity label that gets little attention.

Faint | 7/12/2007, 11:57 am EST

Why would any musician want to wait for 10-11 months (and compete) to get signed to a start-up label run by a guy whose own band can barely stay afloat in the music business…and who doesn’t seem to understand that record labels are being phased out & forced to restructure?

Anonymous | 7/12/2007, 11:50 am EST

just bookmarked it, will check it out as soon as its up

elli | 7/12/2007, 10:31 am EST

Right on!!

Mitch | 7/12/2007, 10:25 am EST

Wow.. that’s actually a lot like.. www.sellaband.com.

jules | 7/12/2007, 9:57 am EST

that’s a nice idea…
