KISS? Bowie? Special-Edition iPods So Hot, They Might Actually Hurt You

7/12/07, 6:06 pm EST

ipodYesterday Rock Daily updated you on the Beatles “Yellow Submarine” iPod and in response, lots of you clamored for ‘Pods dedicated to KISS, the White Stripes, David Bowie, Prince and the Rolling Stones — so we made them for you. Click here for a look at how we imagine these special-edition iPods might look.

But whichever actually manufactured iPod you wind up with, beware: CNN reports that iPod users are suffering severe electrocution burns after getting struck by lightning while jamming to their favorite tunes. An unidentified Canadian jogger was running during a thunderstorm when lightening hit a nearby tree and jumped to his body, throwing him eight feet and leaving red burns where his iPod was strapped to his body. Last summer, 18-year-old Jason Bunch suffered a similar fate while listening to Metallica as a storm brewed nearby. Both victims had ruptured eardrums, as well.
Plus, a new study reports that baby boomers have an alarmingly high rate of hearing loss — one in six, to be exact — thanks to being “the first of that rock ’n’ roll generation, the first to really grow up with loud music, personal stereo systems.”

but thats what you get for buying into hype. iPods are garbage compared to the decent media players. The biggest players right now, iPod and Zune, both are only average devices. Try doing some actual research on specs. They might not save you from getting zapped, but they will help you through the agony of high voltage burn by giving you a better sound to noise ratio, higher battery life and more features. Ok, I’ll stop now because I sound like an ad sales person. Ugh.

Was Jason Bunch listening to Ride The Lightning?

No, you yutzs! | 7/12/2007, 10:34 pm EST

I said a candy-cane striped iPod!

I didn’t say to bling it out with paris Hilton suck beads! *sigh* No one ever reads these things!

Bad RS! Bad!

the stripes ipod should have gone with the classic peppermint swirl design, centered around the click wheel thing… i think the icky thump pod looks rather lame.

ashmoore | 7/13/2007, 12:34 am EST

ummm…am I the only one who thinks that running around in a thunderstorm isn’t exactly the smartest thing to do in the world, Ipod or no Ipod?

geoff | 7/13/2007, 1:13 am EST

Apple should make a zeppelin ipod. It would be perfect since zeppelin does not want their music broken down to singles.

Rich | 7/13/2007, 5:52 am EST

What’s an iPod going to do for me? My vinyl and most CD’s trump those iPod things any day of the week. My components are simply superior. Do you copy, Apple?

TC | 7/13/2007, 9:41 am EST

Rich you prehistoric a hole. Whats an iPod going to do for you? How bout put every one of your CDs at your fingertips while your driving. -Or walking if you haven’t bought into the whole “car” thing yet.

killyridols | 7/13/2007, 10:34 am EST

Hey Rich, just get one of these, it’s even got a aux. input for yr. turntable. Get yourself some electrostatic speakers and you’ll be good to go.

Why would Apple release iPods with a click wheel now that we have the iPhone.

Rich | 7/13/2007, 1:49 pm EST

Don’t worry about it “TC.” I’ve got a “car.” And I’m not tone deaf as you appear to be.

alyssa garcia | 7/13/2007, 3:12 pm EST

ohmyholyfuck i want that bowie iPod!

Dookie | 7/13/2007, 6:16 pm EST

SO heres a question i pose to you “Rich”…what if im driving and want to find a cd from my 200 cd full case…isnt it much easier to scroll through my ipod? just a question…but i do think your a moron

Rich | 7/13/2007, 7:16 pm EST

“Dookie,” for me anyway, it has nothing to do with the convenience of a proprietary system and everything to do with sound quality. They compress those files to a point where the soundstage is thin (i.e., it sounds like sh__). I’d even put my 30+ year old FM tuner up against one of those silly little boxes any day of the week and come up smiling. I could care less about having 200 CD’s at my finger tips. If it sounds like sh__, why bother?

You are taking cheap shots because you don’t have anything intelligent to say, or you represent a company that cares only about the ole mighty dollar and doesn’t give a hoot about people’s hearing.

Dookie | 7/13/2007, 9:03 pm EST

Touche…to an extent. First off, im neither of the 2 things at the bottom of your last post “rich”…however i believe most people find the sound quality way more than fine for their car/ stereo/headphones…and the ease of having x amount of songs at your hands seems to outweigh the fact that the sound quality is somewhat reduced…but isnt that why itunes also released DRM free downloads? But to each his own…you can be happy with your cd brick and ill take my ipod

rockbutterfly | 7/13/2007, 10:08 pm EST

Great,

Just another way of lining Gene Simmon’s pockets

spacecadet | 7/13/2007, 10:21 pm EST

If only they were real, and if I hadn’t gotten a new one in October…
But hen I’d have the tough decision of going to the Bowie or the Prince one…

Oh well. Clever work, RS!
