Kid Rock’s Rock and Roll Jesus: Exclusive Sneak Peek

7/12/07, 11:23 am EST

kid rockThis Monday, Rolling Stone ventured to a thirty-acre estate in Clarkston, MI, to spend some quality time with Kid Rock. The badass born Robert Ritchie gave us the grand tour of his house and studio — giant go-cart track, swimming pool, signed Johnny Cash photo and the spot where James Hetfield wrecked one of Rock’s motorcycles — and played us his new disc, Rock and Roll Jesus. The album is hot shit: a balls-out rock record with strip-club-ready bangers like “So Hot,” giant AC/DC-style guitars, better singing than ever and only one rap song.

According to Rock, Jesus has passed the crucial hot-chick test. “It’s the best thing I’ve ever done,” he says, “I’ve had friends over when we’re playing back. Sometimes there’ll be girls running around naked and we’re like, ‘Fuck, turn the music on!’ The feedback about the album has been very positive.” Check out the next issue of Rolling Stone for the full details. Until then, check out a photo of the pimped-out front gate to the Rock compound, after the jump.

since when has kid rock been “badass”?

America needs the Rock in a bad way. When is the release date?

Big Nate | 7/12/2007, 11:57 am EST

Um, I bet it sucks

Nathan | 7/12/2007, 11:59 am EST

This album’s gonna suuuuuuuuck.

nordstrom | 7/12/2007, 12:01 pm EST

Well, he’s “bad” according to the dictionary. And he’s certainly an ass. So there you go.

T | 7/12/2007, 12:03 pm EST

Kid Rock is an embarrassment to music and the human race. Rock and Roll Jesus my ass, what a loser.

hehe | 7/12/2007, 12:04 pm EST

christ, why hasn’t someone killed this guy yet…

Faint | 7/12/2007, 12:08 pm EST

Kid Rock? Are you fucking kidding me? I thought we were done with this idiot back in the nineties.

That whole “white-trash non-musician-trying-to-be-a-ro cker” formula is extremely passe.

Dean | 7/12/2007, 12:12 pm EST

It seems like just about every band/artist, out there in the popular music world today, likes to say “This is my/our best album yet.” Of course they are going to say that! What else are they going to say?!? “Ummm, this isn’t as good as our last album, but we hope you’ll pick it up… it’s a good listen.” Yeah right!

Seriously…

I personally feel that hype kills everything. To me, it should be like this:

You put out a great record and you gain the public’s attention… awesome. Now, here’s an idea… the next time you put out an album, try to have some confidence and let your already existing success speak for itself. Let people buy your record and then decide for themself if they like it or not.

I love Linkin Park, but there new Special Edition CD came with a DVD and I wish I wouldn’t have watched it. They went on and on and on and on about how different their new CD sounded and how it’s the best thing they’ve ever done and how much time they spent working on it. After hearing all that, you’d want to then turn on the music and hear the best tunes you’ve ever heard in your life, right? Wrong! It was good, but not as good as they tried to hype it up to be. They spent SOOO much time on it, and that’s what they came up with. The White Stripes recorded their newest in 3 weeks and it is face melting rock! For the record, I do like Linkin Park and you can’t compare apples to oranges because music is so vastly different. I’m just trying to say: Musicians…

STOP HYPING YOUR MUSIC!

I doubt this is what they were talking about, but just like the Beatles said: “Let it be.”

DLR | 7/12/2007, 12:20 pm EST

Devil without a cause…it’ll take a miracle to go gold.

40 OZ KILLA | 7/12/2007, 12:31 pm EST

I say give it a chance, I think he has always wanted to make a true rock record, after all he’s not hangin’ w/ Jeezy or Diddy. He hangs w/ James from metallica and Hank Jr. Maybe his earlier albums were just a case of who he was at the time, young dumb and full of cum. I used to like a lot of rap when I was younger and can’t stand most of it now. The “Kid” may have come of age too.

Beelay | 7/12/2007, 12:36 pm EST

kid rock blows…just like the rest of his dumb ass republican buddies.

next…

shannon hoon's corpse | 7/12/2007, 12:47 pm EST

devil was a great album with alot of fun shit on it. i didn’t care for the follow ups or the first few albums but i wouldn’t mind a good effort from kid. he has got some talent for writing catchy shit

Michael Augustine-St. Louis | 7/12/2007, 12:52 pm EST

Kid Rock? Give me a break…he completely waters down every genre he rips off. Who the hell do you guys have working for you…Strip club owners (ie the only people who think his music is any good)?

Dark Bob | 7/12/2007, 12:57 pm EST

This guy is totally overrated.

A Fan | 7/12/2007, 1:02 pm EST

Kid Rock rules!

Bradford | 7/12/2007, 1:07 pm EST

Hey all of you… pull your thumbs out of your ass, bury the self importance, and get wise to the fact that Kid Rock, while he may not be half as poignant as Bright Eyes or anyone of that ilk, knows how to write rock and roll that is FUN… remember fun!?

The only difference between a Drive-By Truckers concert and a Kid Rock concert is corporate sponsors and boat loads of bravado. And who says that is such a crime (apparently you do ‘hehe’).

Come on, look at all the great “dumb” guitar rock bands… AC/DC, Motorhead, Skynyrd… I mean christ, what makes Kid Rock any different from David Lee Roth? And you know what, Kid Rock is not even “that” much worse than Van Halen. Yet still, nobody has the balls to admit that at one point or another they kind of dug “Cowboy” or “Bawitdaba.” If Sheryl Crow, Hank Williams Jr., Metallica, and ZZ Top openly support Kid Rock, why can’t we?

Implant Pamela | 7/12/2007, 1:11 pm EST

C’mon guys, go easy on little Bobby. Just because he’s a white trash,no talent hack, doesn’t mean he can’t rock…
does it?
…actually it does…he blows monkey cock.
-Pam

me | 7/12/2007, 1:16 pm EST

Real insightful pamela. hes still done way more with his life than you ever have – so whats that say about you?

vedder fan | 7/12/2007, 1:23 pm EST

Kid Rock sucks!!!!!!!!!!

usa | 7/12/2007, 1:41 pm EST

Bradford got it right on, I am not a big fan but Ive seem him in concert a few times, GREAT shows, for those of us who like to have fun. suck monkey dick? thats clever

Wicked 1 | 7/12/2007, 1:44 pm EST

Anyone who thinks KR sucks hasnt seen him live. No one works harder for the Audience Than KR. And the Twisted Brown Truckers are incredible band. The way he blends a hardcore Rap song into a southern Rock ballad without missing a beat is genuis. When I hear people start trash talking about white trash rocker, I know they havent given him a good listen or they arent very intelligent about the difficulty of his music

KellyW71 | 7/12/2007, 1:46 pm EST

Nice Gate!

Blasphamy | 7/12/2007, 1:53 pm EST

I just farted.

Anonymous | 7/12/2007, 2:03 pm EST

implant pamela, thats a good name for you because your words are fake as you.kidrock is awesome and his concerts are one of the best.putting kid down is like a good laugh considering your life is sucky hahaaaaa. the man can sing, perform, and party his ass off.i dont think he made close to a hundred million because hes untalented, so be real with your comments.

Joe | 7/12/2007, 2:09 pm EST

If this album is a tenth as good as Devil, it will be a hundred times better than Cocky. Either way, politics aside, when Kid’s good (”Bawitdaba”)he’s really good, and when he’s bad (”Feel Like Makin Love”) he’s abysmal.

BiteMe | 7/12/2007, 2:11 pm EST

I thought I smelled shit.

ShadyLynn | 7/12/2007, 2:36 pm EST

That gate doesn’t look right without KellyW71 hanging from it.

killyridols | 7/12/2007, 2:40 pm EST

I cannot belive that someone actually said that Kid Rock’s music is difficult. I think that is the most wrong statment that I have ever heard. For real. As far as his music, I mean come on, it’s party music for people that really get into hair metal/radio rap. It really has nothing to do with any serious music discussion. I find the man’s music to be trite and loaded with self refrencing swill. It’s very bombastic, and I find that in general style over substance gets old very fast and I don’t think he will find the same success with this album as he has with his past “efforts”.

Matt | 7/12/2007, 2:50 pm EST

has this guy ever been relevant? he seemed second rate, even when he was selling records

Thanks Extreme Kid Rock for the link. *sticks out tounge*

BiteMe | 7/12/2007, 3:05 pm EST

P.S. I’m a ghost.

Southern Cross | 7/12/2007, 3:08 pm EST

Bad. Ass born. Explains a lot.

MC5rule | 7/12/2007, 3:12 pm EST

If they brought back Rob Tyner and Fred “Sonic” Smith from the grave and propped them up onstage with the rest of the band they would still be more energetic and badass than kid rock.

G | 7/12/2007, 3:31 pm EST

In the wake of most stuff being portrayed as rock music, at least this guy tries to be a rock star. Love or hate him, that type of bravado is something sadly missed on the current rock scene.
Kids, can we please make rock dirty again? This mobile-phone, mallrat crap is boring and lifeless.

KellyW71 | 7/12/2007, 3:33 pm EST

Jesus Joint…is the theme of this tour.

I love it Big Willy Style.

Mule | 7/12/2007, 3:33 pm EST

I think Bradford said it best, and it’s really sad in this day and age of pretentious pompous “emosians” and angry rappers that a lot of people have forgotten how to have FUN with rock’n'roll!!! Y’all get OVER yourselves and just shake your collective asses and not worry about “relevance” or “difficulty” for the love of all that is righteous!! I’ve always wished Chuck Berry would duck walk across the stage of a Morissey concert. Sometimes, you just gotta let your hair down and SMILE! (By the way, Kid’s self-titled third album was very underrated. Sure, the “Feel Like Makin’ Love” cover was ill-conceived to say the least, but heart-wrenching stuff like “Single Fathers” and metal/rockers like “Jackson, Mississippi” more than make up for it!!

abandonedstation | 7/12/2007, 3:59 pm EST

Kid Rock is Ted Nugent but with drugs.

Chrystal | 7/12/2007, 4:32 pm EST

Kid Rock is awesome…not as awesome as Velvet Revolver though. Why has Libertad not been reviewed on this site?

Rich | 7/12/2007, 7:40 pm EST

I think it’s just supposed to be fun, not “relevant” as some posts suggest he should strive for. It’s the kind of music you kick yourself in the ass for blowing the speakers.

Funny just saw him in Bama and Biloxi. Same old music, but the energy is always more intense. Been to many many shows and never seen a show come close to the energy you find at a KR/TBT show!
Rock On! Waiting patiently for release.

ShadyLynn | 7/12/2007, 10:18 pm EST

The energy at our little ‘after party’ was intense too. LMAO

Good friends, good times.

Excited about the new album, can’t wait for the Vegas concert BUT I am disappointed in the name of the album and tour.Let’s leave Jesus out of this,OK? Remember what happened to the Beatles when John Lennon started in about Jesus? It did not go over too well.I still the Kid, will continue to go to all his concerts and have all the dirty thoughts I have when I see him, but leave Jesus out of it. Too late I assume.See ya’ in Vegas Bobbie.Love ya’ a lot!

Angels4BobSeger | 7/13/2007, 12:41 am EST

I had a feeling someday Bobby would record an album like this.
He always said Jesus Christ was his hero. That was in an interview with aol in the year 2001. I printed that out.
Good luck Bobby Ritchie with the new cd.

God bless you.

i always belived in the second coming of Christ i just did’nt think he would do it on a Rock n Roll album LOL

Mike | 7/13/2007, 7:58 pm EST

Kid Rock’s music has “heart” witch is a lot more than I can say for a lot of the “popular music” out there. Just go to a Kid Rock concert and you will see that not only his music has heart but so does he. The guy can go from Lynyrd Skynyrd to grandmaster funk back to AC/DC then to Waylon Jennings. I have been waiting for this album and I know I wont be disappointed!

Bangers-N-Mash | 7/13/2007, 8:11 pm EST

Listen to A L L you jealous-ass bitches! All you working class idiots are just pissed cuz some regular person like you made an ASSLOAD of money doing what he loves to do! Talk about the ‘Great American Dream’!
Robert ‘KID ROCK’ Ritchie left the wealth of his family to do his own thing, and made MILLIONS whilst doing so. If you’ve never seen him LIVE, then shut yer piehole!
This boy ROCKS! I’ve seen him in some shit hole in K-zoo MI. in front of like 32 people back in the mid ninties, I’ve seen him at a ’sold out’ Joe Louis Arena in Detroit in 2006…
the same ‘BAD ASS’ energy.
Just cuz you can’t buy anything you want, drive any car you want, live in any house you want, nor have a sweet ass front gate like the KID, doesn’t mean you should
be rippin this guy. Do you really
think that ALL those people bought ALL thos albums because he’s a “hack”..or because he “sucks”..or because he “blows monkey cock”? (nice one, ‘implant pam’…douche) Like ‘they’ say… if you don’t like it, don’t listen, but don’t be a hater.
“ROCK OUT WITH YER COCK OUT!”

B | 7/15/2007, 12:42 am EST

I don’t understand how Jesus has suddenly become a rock star, and stripped of all the glory and honor he deserves. He is holy, righteous, pure, mighty, and much more than we could ever imagine. How could anyone put that name on a rock album? He deserves so much more than that.

Ive been waiting for a decent album from the kid since his cocky album. His self titled album was too country for my liking. I know this album is gonna be one of the greatest rock albums ever!! He deserves more credit then most people give him. He has done pretty much every genre and has done well in all of them. I cant wait!

Yeah, whatever. He’s just doing the typical “jesus christ pose”.

Dramhalen | 7/17/2007, 12:05 pm EST

I’ve seen all the greats live, you name it & I can tell you you without reservation the KID ranks right up there. I’ve seen him now 5 times & each show pregressively got better & better. There are 6 of us kid rock tribal freaks that always go together – it’s like our mecca gathering! Face it haters, he’s talented! True rock legends even think so – I mean the guy can litereally play any insturment on that stage & those of you who have seen him live have witnessed that. It’s a shame as a country, that we would allow people like SEAN to post things. Learn to sound smart if you are going to comment.

faderguy | 7/17/2007, 7:55 pm EST

Hey ‘K’, WORD!

catch22 | 7/17/2007, 11:29 pm EST

when? hes The American Bad Ass !!
This cd is going to fucking rock as in Kid Rock. I cant wait to get it in my hands. for those with the negativity go stand in line for the next backstreet boys cd. Do a little growing up and quit trying to bring the man down. He makes music for the masses and the troops. He is as real an entertainer we have seen since Elvis

Crazy4KidRock | 7/18/2007, 1:25 pm EST

First of all…I LOVE KID ROCK…and no my IQ is not 60. I am a college grad, accomplished accountant, and my IQ (when tested) was very high!!!!! So, no, not all fans are stupid.

Second….for the people complaining about “Jesus” in this song……I really feel sorry for you. I teach Sunday School at a Christian church in the South and did I mention…I LOVE KID ROCK.

You ask “What would Jesus Do?” Well, let me tell you what Jesus would NOT do….he would not diss someone in an internet blog for wanting to have him “Jesus” on his album. We live in a country where most people who are in church wouldn’t dare stand up for their faith. Here is a guy who doesn’t care what the world thinks – Jesus is his Hero.

That makes Kid Rock my hero.

Ye without sin, cast the first stone.

Can’t wait for the album!!!!

sean | 7/18/2007, 1:41 pm EST

ok i’m dumb that hurts what r u 8?

The title most likely wont spark any controversy and boost sales with “Jesus” in the title since none of the sites that list the album have complained yet, some might. Also,I Don’t think the title defames ‘Jesus’ since its a play on words. It will either sale cuz the singles don’t suck or flop cuz their average or awful, hopefully the first half is true, esp after the s/t didnt do much.

I need contact information for Kid Rock for a very important charity event that invovles local firefighters. Can any one help me?

Alexander | 7/18/2007, 2:47 pm EST

Kid Rock is the greatest. i dissagree with almost everything he thinks and says including his religion but you have to give him credit, he makes AMAZING music and its all from the heart. what more can you ask for?

sean | 7/18/2007, 2:58 pm EST

How ironic that I saw Chris Cornell perform Soundgarden’s “Jesus Christ Pose” recently in concert. It was truly incredible and powerful. Everybody was blown away. What a gifted singer, songwriter and performer.

I’m not quite sure what to make of Kid Rock’s new cd title. Of course it’s just a play on words. However, Soundgarden’s song lyrics have an entirely different meaning and message altogether. Some say that the song lyrics are about celebrities who “pose” as being higher and mightier than they actually are, at least in the eyes of their worshipping fans. That’s wide open to interpretation.

What is Kid Rock getting at? His message is unclear. Regardless of the music itself, if anything, he has managed to draw a lot of attention just with the cd title alone.

You all must be-ummmmmm… 10 years old? It is unfortunate that the haters are unequipped to see and hear talent when it is presented! I’m sure this will be K.R.’s Final Finale- so soak it up! Maybe the title means- Rock & Roll- jesus- I never thought i’d end it here! You know- started out rapping-and he ended up giving it ALL to us (rap, rock blues, country- who knew!)

Kid Rock is awesome? He is my hero? He is god? What a bunch of loosers. Commercial untalented candycoated crap. Every verse this guy sings is about himself. Go screw yourself Kid Rock. Britaney Spears sold 20+ million albums too. This does not mean she’s any good. ” My name is Kid Rock”! Wow….brilliant…did it take him 3 years to come up with that verse? Kid Rock sucks cock..period.

reason | 10/2/2007, 3:44 pm EST

Buy Don’t Buy. But please just shut the hell up. For the love of Jesus, and Black Bob!

fBomb | 10/2/2007, 5:48 pm EST

I hated Kid Rock untill I saw him open for Metallica. By the end of it I jumped off Metallica’s band wagon and onto Kid’s. His connection with the audience won me over. If you don’t take him too seriously (he doesn’t take himself seriously either) you’ll discover some serious talent.

mcstansical | 10/3/2007, 5:01 pm EST

The last shit I took has more talent than Kid Rock !! Looks better than him too !!

LISA | 10/3/2007, 8:11 pm EST

WAY TO GO KID!!! NOT ONLY COULD KID KICK TOMMY’S ASS,(REALLY AN EASY TASK I’M SURE)BUT HE IS A GREAT MUSICIAN THAT CAN PLAY EVERY INSTRUMENT ON HIS STAGE…..TOMMY CAN’T…ALL HE CAN DO IS TALK SHIT, WELL IT CAUGHT UP WITH HIS STUPID DISEASE INFESTED ASS!! KID ROCKS, WITH OLDIES TO HIP HOP AND EACH ALBUM IS BETTER THAN THE PREVIOUS….KEEP GOING KID!!!

suzluvskid | 10/3/2007, 11:15 pm EST

lil rock & roll angel | 10/4/2007, 3:28 am EST

Kid Rock’s new cd is awesome – the songs on there will set your heart on fire for him – he is hot, his album is hot and anyone who won’t admit it is just jealous – I love everyone of the songs – amen will make your cry, all summer long will make you remember your first love, so hot make you want to be with him, and the last one, half your age, will make you laugh and wish you had his kid of money that you can rip your ex a new one and millions of people will hear it!
I hope we don’t have to wait 3 more years for another cd!

Anonymous | 10/4/2007, 9:56 am EST

I’m 50 year old female and I love Kid Rock!
It doesn’t matter to me if ya like him or not, I DO!

David S. | 10/10/2007, 2:21 pm EST

It sounds like the author of this article wants to have sex with Kid Rock, or with one of the leftover strippers payed to hang out with him. Rollingstone “experts” give out stars in such a random way, it is as if an artist can buy the 3rd, and 4th star with their own star access/power. It must be fun hanging with Kid Rock, I wouldn’t pan him either if I was trying to hang in his crew of stars and actors. Such an article should be tagged with the label “infomercial” or “payed advertising”, even if the payment is the author’s temporary access to cool people, stars, and parties. Some people think his rock and roll revival thing is pathetic, like watching a tribute band. Please, more balance. I could like Kid Rock, but don’t push him on me please.

Didn’t impress me at all. He is nasty, has a vulgar mouth. Need to cut his stringy hair and wash it.
Definately not the father of the year as he pretends to be. As for his singing, it is more yelling & screaming that it is singing.

adam | 10/11/2007, 9:54 am EST

Ya know Tommy Lee can actually PLAY the drums. kid rock plays them like a 3 year old would if you sat them behind a drumkit. I had to sit thru Kid rock’s untalented ass to see Metallica and that was 1 hour of my life i will never get back. Some of you people really need to get a clue as to what the word “talent” means.

KeepITReal | 10/21/2007, 3:44 am EST

While, liking some of his music and disliking some..I always had a lot of respect for Bob because he always seemed to keep it real and stayed grounded…but hanging out with Bill Frist? George Bush? He is a goddamn republican! Talk about destroying an image. Talk about money making a guy a total sell-out hypocrite! That is exactly why he is starting to turn to country and is trying to forget the hip-hop blend that made him famous. Damn,he should just go with his fellow hypocrite..Toby Keith and start attending Klan rallies. Talk about being shocked! A fucking right-wing conservative at heart….makes you realize that nearly everything and everyone are nothing but pre-conceived image. First Dennis Hopper and now the Kid..damn,what has happened to our country?

zebra | 11/10/2007, 2:59 pm EST

Too bad, did you think that the whole world is “democrat”. If Bob “Kid Rock” wants to express his beliefs as a Republican too f _ _ _ _ _g bad. Get over your zleazy left wing self. Right on Kid, you’re our rock for saying what you feel.

You know I was really hoping that Kid Rock did find God, it would save him from a long and hard life in Hell. Thats exactly where ge will go, especially for mocking Jesus with the title of his album!
Good news: JESUS FORGIVES…

kjf | 11/27/2007, 1:37 am EST

you know nobody really knows what gods plans are for kidrock or where he stands in gods plans god only knows but god does allow us the choice to choose our paths may it be right one or the wrong one and gods judge of us all not you people making your comments only god and kidrock know where they stand with each other you people dont know whats in kidrocks heart or his feelings is when it comes to jesus but you can know this jesus does he see all and heres all so leave the judgeing to god where all in gods book start worrying about yourselfs and where you stand with god hes judgeing all of us and jesus does forgive anyone who ask for his forgivness knock and the door shall open thats why god gave his only begotten son so that we may be saved .god bless you all and also my self including.kjfaith

ILoveKidRock69 | 3/9/2008, 11:50 pm EST

All you people on this list who are haters need to get a fuckin’ life. Kid Rock will always make more money than you, always get more women than you and always rock our asses off more than you low life mother fuckers ever thought about doing. Half you people look like you got your education from the local crack house, because you can’t spell worth a shit. I am blind and use speech on my computer to read and type, and I can spell better than all you mother fuckers! I bet half you ass holes bag groceries or push carts for a living and you’re jealous that you think he looks like whatever and he’ll always have more in life than you will. So deal with it. I would love to do tons of stuff to Kid Rock. He makes me cream my jeans whenever I hear the sound of his singing voice and his regular speaking voice. Damn, I’d really love to feel him from head to toe.

Danny DelSignore | 10/23/2008, 4:15 pm EST
