Stars Beat Leak By Hawking New LP Online

7/11/07, 11:03 am EST

starsWhile record companies search for a solution to the “dowloading problem,” Canadian indie-pop band Stars have come up with their own plan: the honor system.

Mere days after finishing their upcoming release, In Our Bedroom After the War, Stars are putting the album up for legal download — more than two months before its scheduled September 25 release date (the physical CD and album will still come out on that day). In a post on their label’s site, Stars explained, “It’s our hope that given a clear, legal alternative to downloading music for free, you will choose to support the creators.”

Savvy way to neutralize the inevitable leak or career suicide?

That is a good idea, I usually just rip my cd’s from the library cus they cost so much. But if more bands did shit like (or just sold their albums for like a buck online) then we’d have all the music we could handle! Fuck profits

i once purchased a Beatle album for $2.99.it was a new release in shrink wrap, on vynal. It’s Hard to pay $2o.oo for a cd these days.you can,t afford to take a chance on new bands at these prices.

Hey, mmd, records are great. If an artist can’t put out an interesting record, why bother? I still listen to complete albums and I still buy my music, but I enjoy doing that a little less when it is only a legal download. I like my little CDs..

As for Stars (who are pretty good by the way), the strategy worked for Wilco. I listened to the songs on the site, I liked, I bought: Sky Blue Sky kicks ass!!

Neil Young streamed Living With War in it’s entirety on his website for free before the album was released..
This is similar.. it’s a good idea, but definitely not a new one

Does this mean we get an early review?

I’ll still steal the album online. But nice try.

the people who d/l it for free are NOT GOING TO BUY IT. hopefully, you make enough from touring.

how about wilco being way ahead of that years ago releasing yankee hotel foxtrot before it came out, releasing a ghost is born on its website months before it came out, and doing the same with sky blue sky yet again months before it came out. way to keep up with this new “novel” idea rollingstone

Hmm…relying on people’s internal sense of fairness, justice, and conscience. I seem to remember a certain saying involving a cow and free milk.

I love Stars. I will be buying the new album when it comes out, and I really hope this experiment doesn’t backfire on them. But my cynical side says that it probably will.

Then again, I’d like to think that people who are fans of Stars (and quality indie music in general) are generally music lovers, not music consumers (see: Nickelback fans). And people who love the music enough will always pay for it.

Only time will tell, though.

records are dead people. wake up.

records are dead

The industry has to try SOMETHING. Only time will tell if it works, but it’s certainly worth the try.

I think this is a brilliant move. A lot of people download leaked albums just to hear the music sooner. Sure, patience is a virtue. But for the weak-willed, making the album available legally is a conscience-easing alternative to music fans.

Why is everyone sucking Stars’s collective D over this decision? They Might Be Giants did the same thing three months ago
