Busta Rhymes racked up a colorful assortment of assault and driving-related charges over the past year — now he’s going to face four separate trials. Yesterday, a judge rejected prosecutors’ attempts to combine Rhymes’ two assault charges into a single trial. Rhymes recently rejected a second offer to serve one year in jail for all four offenses, and his lawyer says keeping the trials separate is a victory for the embattled MC. “The decision today validates the defense’s argument. We detailed to the court that we have defense to these cases and the court agreed.” The trials will run consecutively beginning September 5.
Rhymes, 34, (real name: Trevor Jones) was most recently arrested in May for suspicion of driving under the influence when police stopped his $255,000 armored SUV for having overly tinted windows. In January, Rhymes turned himself in on charges that he assaulted an employee who spat on his car, after police added a weapons charge to the original assault charges from last August. Rhymes had also been charged with assault following an incident with a fan at a music festival, and had been arrested in February after police discovered he was driving with a suspended license after stopping him for running a red light.
