Are Morrissey Fans The Silliest Petition Starters?

7/11/07, 5:45 pm EST

MorrisseyAnyone who caught Morrissey on Late Show With David Letterman June 29 saw arguably the world’s most famous vegetarian get a little uncomfortable as the show’s host made a few too many references to spare ribs — and even munched on a plate of them. The Moz later referred to the show as “The David Butterball Show,” and now some easily offended fans have launched a petition that demands a boycott of the Show and an apology from Letterman.

Silliest fan-started petition ever? Maybe — but it’s got some stiff competition from these:

I really believe that someone like
Morrissey who actually enjoys
sarcasm to the hilt, can
take it just as much as he dishes
it out.
This surely must be one of the biggest
storms in a teacup I’ve heard in a while…..

The fact was that David knew about Morrissey’s activism, and he actually made that disgusting act in Morrissey’s performance transmission.. that’s absolutely rude. He should apologize, nobody deserves to be offended in public. Morrissey fans, obviously, will claim for this. You can call us whatever you want..

you know what is funny? when we started this boycott we didnt think it would go this far.. all the haters are what keeps it going. the main people are barely even talking about it. as long as people keep talking about it its out there..good or bad..your still talking about us. viva moz!! southern califas 909

I love Morrissey but most of the time some of his fans take things too seriously and get out of hand. Viva Moz!

IT DOESNT MAKE SENSE ACTUALLY.BUT ANYWAYS ANY APOLOGY WAS ALL WE WANTED. WE DO HAVE SUPPORT. WE LOVE HIM HE IS NOT LAME LIKE SOME ONE STATED. BUT THAT IS YOUR OPINION AND THIS IS OURS. VIVA MORRISSEY, SOUTHERN CALI LOVES YOU!! FIND ME ON TEH SPACE IF YOU WANT.. YOUR CHOICE..

MOZ ANGELES KYTTEN | 7/13/2007, 1:40 am EST

One more thing… we never “demanded” a boycott. We invited anyone who felt the same way to participate. Big difference. We also never asked that Letterman be taken off the air, silenced or in any way censored (which is another common misperception). We were just asking for an apology from whomever was responsible. Asking. Not demanding. They’re free to deny our request. We’re free to avoid their show and their sponsors. Ain’t America grand?

This was not about Morrissey or Dennis Kucinich (the other guest that night, who’s a vegan) and it certainly wasn’t about trying to convert the world to vegetarianism (a very personal choice IMO). This was about common courtesy. As someone wrote in another forum, what Letterman did was “like inviting non-smokers to your home and blowing smoke in their faces.” Only Letterman did it on national TV, effectively slagging off all vegetarians.

I realize the meat thing is his shtick, but what I don’t understand is why he couldn’t leave it out just this once, out of respect for his guests. The fact that he kept going with it (after there was time during the commercial to have the “mistake” explained to him) is what made it seem intentional if not downright hostile. Which was kinda surprising, coming from Dave.

Oh, and from what I’ve read, the whole show was taped earlier in the week, not just Morrissey’s segment. But regardless, it’s how it’s presented to the public that matters… because again, it’s not just about Morrissey. If he’d had Paul McCartney and Pamela Anderson on that night, I would’ve been just as appalled. Seriously, would he have handed out Prozac on a show with Tom Cruise and Lisa Marie Presely as guests? (Okay, that would be funny… but still a cheap shot.)

Morrissey isn’t lame, but fascist vegetarians that are offended by every tiny little meat-related thing AND start stupid petitions are.
