Eminem - Criminal - Gianni Versace

Jesse H. | 7/11/2007, 5:14 pm EST

Pearl Jam. “Rats.”
At the end where he says “Ben, the

Shout out to the Jackson 5.

Martin | 7/11/2007, 10:06 am EST

Good job with the RATM track.

“Steppin’ into the jam and I’m slammin’ like Shaquille”

KEM | 7/10/2007, 7:42 pm EST

This is a good post, I always enjoyed the beastie shout outs…REM…”dreaming of maria callas, whoever she is” or “hollywood is under me, I’m Martin Sheen, I’m Steve McQueen, I’m Jimmy Dean” or “I don’t wanna be iggy pop, but if that’s what it takes…”…there might be more somewhere.

Gary | 7/10/2007, 7:26 pm EST

Billy Joel–We Didn’t Start the Fire. Too many names to mention. Reads like a who’s who of the 20th century.

Gary | 7/10/2007, 7:20 pm EST

Again the Beastie Boys from Intergalactic. “Like a pinch on the neck from Mr. Spock.”

Alex | 7/10/2007, 3:07 pm EST

How about Too Much Joy’s “William Holden Caulfield,” which offers a blended-together shout-out to the actor in Sunset Boulevard and the kid in Catcher in the Rye? (The movie and the novel are mentioned by name, too.)

Joe B | 7/10/2007, 2:35 pm EST

How about Talib Kweli shouting out everyone’s favorite 80’s syndicated robot girl in Black Star’s “Hater Players”-”It’s a Small Wonder like Vicki”

Joe | 7/10/2007, 1:36 pm EST

John Fogerty’s “Centerfield”

Willie Mays

the nina the pinta the santa maria the noose an the rapist…RATM

QuantumLuv | 7/10/2007, 12:53 pm EST

As deplorable as Snow Patrol are, their song “Eyes Open” not only name-checks Sufjan Stevens, but goes as far as to give praise to one of his songs (”Chicago”) — totally weird.

Riprock | 7/10/2007, 11:44 am EST

I;m a die hard like my man Bruce Willis!

beastie boys - paul’s boutique

bein real | 7/10/2007, 11:35 am EST

Madonna | 7/10/2007, 9:46 am EST

Man on the Moon gives a shout out to Mott the Hoople.

Jude | 7/10/2007, 9:25 am EST

System of a Down shout out to Tony Danza (…”cuts in line”), Jack Girardi (…”is ten feet tall”), and Frankie Avalon….IN ONE SONG!

Dezza | 7/10/2007, 4:58 am EST

Cathedral-English doom metal band, have “Huggy Bear-Oh Yeah!” in a song called Utopian Blaster

Buzzardo | 7/10/2007, 2:43 am EST

It’s kind of a goofy song, but Guns ‘N’ Roses “Get in the Ring” is a funny shout-out to Bob Guccione Jr. and his lack of sexual prowess compared to his father. (I’m laughing thinking about it…)

The other that ought to included for sure (sorry if someone else has posted this) is “Sweet Home Alabama”–”I hope Neil Young will remember…”

Jimmy Vulture | 7/10/2007, 2:20 am EST

One more that shouldn’t be overlooked as the song is practically comprised of shout-outs is “Broadway Melody of 1974″ by Genesis. The shout-outs include Lenny Bruce, Marshall McLuhan, Groucho Marx, The Ku Klux Klan, Caryl Chessman, and Howard Hughes. Not bad for a 15-line song!

val | 7/10/2007, 1:54 am EST

beasties “sabotage” is a total rip of the The JAms “PRivate Hell” bass only

Jimmy Vulture | 7/10/2007, 12:33 am EST

Beasties oughta top the list for sure, but should be for their shout-out to Japanese home run king, Sadaharu Oh on “Hey Ladies” –”I’ve got more hits than Sadaharu Oh”–Pure Genius!

Dr. Benway | 7/10/2007, 12:29 am EST

Paul just thought we should know about David J even though it has nothing to do with this topic

o' television | 7/10/2007, 12:16 am EST

I agree with Office bastard!

ODB’s “I Can’t Wait” should be an uncontestable #1

“…The Eskimos…The Munchkins”

Dan from Jersey | 7/9/2007, 11:48 pm EST

Beastie’s also get a nod for a shot out to Rod Carew on ‘Sure Shot’

A Tribe Called Quest - former Mayor David Dinkins on ‘Left My Wallet in El Segundo’

Dwarves - Brenda, Luke & Kelly from 90210 on ‘Everybodies Girl’

Office Bastard | 7/9/2007, 11:40 pm EST

What a bullshit list…

how could the ODB not be number 1?

He has given a shout out to
himself
submarines
people in parts of the world he never been
seeds
and of course the Wu-Tang…

Zooter | 7/9/2007, 11:36 pm EST

What? No mention of Chubb Rock sending props to his “homegirl Lanie Kazan” in “Treat Em Right?”

Okay, fine, turns out he’s REALLY saying “Lady Kazam,” but it SHOULD be Lanie Kazan…

Paul | 7/9/2007, 11:23 pm EST

Here is an acoustic artist that is far different than your average rock/pop artist. David j.’s songwriting and lyrical stories are like non other.

The question is that this kid has not been signed by a major label and everyone is still scratching thier heads to find out why.

I saw David j. on musicnation.com and he is currently in 1st place in the rock category. He seems to be a favorite amongst the artist and the fans.

I found his myspace page it is…

MarysD-land | 7/9/2007, 10:52 pm EST

umm Promiscous- by nelly fertado and she mentions steve nash?

Pedro | 7/9/2007, 10:49 pm EST

Neil Young’s No Wonder from the Prairie Wind album should have made the list, with the line “I’ll always remember something Chris Rock said.” When I heard it I had to check to make sure I didn’t hear it wrong. Definitely bizarre.

emily | 7/9/2007, 10:32 pm EST

how about yoko ono in roger water’s pros and cons of hitchhiking?

Peter | 7/9/2007, 10:22 pm EST

Kanye West - Like Kathy Lee needed Regis / that’s the way I need Jesus - from “Jesus Walks”

Grant | 7/9/2007, 10:11 pm EST

Norman Schwartzkopf in Beck’s Hollywood Freaks (of course from Midnite Vultures)

philippe | 7/9/2007, 9:55 pm EST

Neil Young gives the Beach Boys a shout out in “Long May You Run” and also Marlon Brando in “Pocahontas”.

Joe | 7/9/2007, 9:30 pm EST

Did anyone mention David Bowie’s Marlon Brando reference in “China Girl” on the last list? My eyes started hurting at the sheer volume of entries.

Tim | 7/9/2007, 9:07 pm EST

Sorry, I’m still partial to the Han Solo reference in Soul Coughing’s “Rolling”.

alibaba | 7/9/2007, 7:52 pm EST

Giants and Beasties on the same list??!!

It’s about damn time!

James Patrick Page | 7/9/2007, 7:17 pm EST

My fave from Paul’s Boutique has always been the shout-out to Chuck Woolery.

I'm glad | 7/9/2007, 6:27 pm EST

I’m glad the beasties made it to the top, but it really should have just been the whole album of Paul’s Boutique

Stuporfly | 7/9/2007, 6:00 pm EST

Rush’s shrill lead singer spells his name ‘Geddy’, but don’t let that get in the way of another clever blog-type entry.
