For anyone who somehow missed Rock Daily’s extensive coverage of Al Gore’s twenty-four-hour music marathon this past weekend, here’s a quick summary: A reported two billion people watched more than 100 artists perform on all seven continents. Attendance at the Washington, D.C. event (which was announced one day before the show) and in Rio were reportedly less than anticipated, and promoters in Johannesburg explained their lower-than-expected turnout by blaming climate change. Guns N’ Roses frontman Axl Rose explained his band’s absence from the event, saying, “We were not asked until the last couple weeks while we were on tour in Australia and have upcoming sold-out dates already rescheduled in Japan.” And Madonna allegedly had some rigid requirements for her London interviews, stipulating journalists must look her in the eye.

Jovi vs Mayer | 7/27/2007, 1:26 am EST
Mayer sucked also, this guy is an ugly bastard!! I think him and Jovi should hook up and do a really slow country duet about living on Broke Back Mountain!!
Jovi please retire while you are behind!!
Kyle | 7/27/2007, 1:24 am EST
Yea Jovi does suck.
If he writes another slow song or another copy of his 1987 hits I’m going to hang myself.
Does this guy do any work for humanity or just put out bad tunes for divorced women??
Tom J | 7/27/2007, 1:23 am EST
Yea Bon Jovi sucks - way too skinny and short for a man. And god only over weight women in their 40s like him.. YUCK!!
Christ Toth | 7/27/2007, 1:21 am EST
This concert was a waste of time for me, like Gore is a waste of speaker, and Kanye West as a human being.
I don’t know who organized this, but let me tell you Bon Jovi blew - this guy can’t sing live!!! What the hell - I couldn’t believe people where booing him.
And why was the stadium 1/2 empty?
waste of Time, waste of money, waste of a bad message!!
pappap999 | 7/15/2007, 2:59 pm EST
has everyone really forgotten this hypocrite [mr. gore] and his attempt to have rock and roll albums labeled as to the lyric content and how this music caused the youth of the planet to go crazy use more drugs commit suicide or murder the parents while they sleep? how these musicians could stand side by side with this guy amazed me! I realize just how hypocritical they are. first gore and his governmental pals insist music was polluting the minds of the children of the planet then when that failed he came up with the pollution of our earth causing the destruction of our planet. while I do understand some problems can be helped by control of how we live I just wonder how the bullshit this man spews is backed by the very people he tried to censor. get me a better spokesman and I will climb aboard.

bullshit. thats just scientists trying to mislead you. i happen to be studying the subject rather extencively in university and i know its fucking true that global warming will be hear if u dont put a stop to it. thats just you trying to reashure yourself that the world will be just fine.

Madonna, the environmetalist. What a joke. She just bought a $10 million home in England. Think there are solar panels on the roof? I wonder if she turns off the lights in rooms she’s exited. Here’s an idea, Material Girl: Buy a $1 million home and spend $9 mil on windmills and solar panels. Rough it like the rest of us. Fucking hypocrite.

Enough | 7/10/2007, 11:11 am EST
Pumpkins were awesome, Foo was Great, Ludacris had the house moving, the guys in Antartcica were fantastic, and then Madonna came out as this old writhing gargoyle, and ruined the moment for me, has anyone else had enough of this woman??? Isn’t it time she commited her life to Aide instead of her career? Enough already!!Enough!!
Global Wha? | 7/10/2007, 11:08 am EST
Looks like people tuned out because they’ve already heard “the message” and are unconvinced.
From Rasmussen Reports -
Just 22% said they followed news stories about the concert Somewhat or Very Closely. Seventy-five percent (75%) did not follow coverage of the event. 52% believe the performers take part in such events because it is good for their image. Only 24% say the celebrities really believe in the cause …
Only 34% believe that events like Live Earth actually help the cause they are intended to serve.
Adding to the skepticism, an earlier survey found that just 24% of Americans consider Al Gore an expert on Global Warming.
Sorry, we’ve heard (over and OVER, we’ve heard) your doomsday scenario and don’t accept your self serving “findings”.
The earth will be fine, try saving yourself!
nate dogg | 7/10/2007, 10:43 am EST
The Al Gore Hypocrite Article doesn’t prove anything.
Let’s blast the musicians if we will, but does anybody remember the only goal of the concerts? to spread the word. EVen if you don’t believe in Global Warming, you got to admit that the world is poluted, species are dying, adn we are using up our natural resources.
Besides that I enjoyed the concerts. Free music. Who cares who you didn’t like, or who is too old, or who has a corvette at home?
Stop polluting my planet!
Pepper's Horny Hearts Club | 7/10/2007, 10:38 am EST
The Chili Peppers are great if all you want lyrically are songs about sex, California and having sex in California and recycled funk from George Clinton. They were always more popular with teenage girls than music fans.
Still, they DID fit in perfectly with the other 80’s and 90’s has been’s at this Lollapalooza for the musically stunted and politically gullible. Does anyone really believe that living large Rock Stars are going to cut their carbon footprint by 90%?

GnR are GD awful | 7/10/2007, 1:06 am EST
GnR would have fit right in with the other 80’s and 90’s has beens on stage. Sad part is the new acts for the most part (Emo hacks, Pussycat Dolls, “singers” from American Idol)also sucked.
The ratings show that most of the world found lots of better alternatives to watching this self important (to the performers and presenters)event designed to make rich entertainers feel less guilty.
RockGod | 7/9/2007, 11:45 pm EST
Guns N Fuckin Roses would have blown the god damn roof off the stadium, the only reason they didnt show up is because Axl would have peeled Jon Bon Jovi’s eyeballs out because number one, they are selling out trying to become country superstars and number two, Bon Jovi will always be jelous of Axl and Always will Always be less of a song to November Rain…… TAKE THAT ONE TO HEART!
discouraged | 7/9/2007, 10:36 pm EST
I can’t believe the negativity spouted by the bitter here. Instead of heeding the message everybody just want’s to blame & judge others. No wonder global warming will never be stopped. I hope U all reap the consequences of your ignorance & arrogance.

People complaining how Tipper Gore ‘ruined free speech’?!?!?!
You have got to be kidding me - have you even listened to any rap in the last decade?? - she accomplished less then nothing. The Parental Advisory stickers simply mean kids will want to hear it EVEN MORE and will actively seek it out.
All she did was give the music acts she was trying to censor millions of dollars of free publicity!
Lame show | 7/9/2007, 5:07 pm EST
Most of the show looked like an episode of I Love the 80’s.
For the first time in years, Michael Jackson made a smart career move by NOT appearing.
If I wanted to be nagged about how I MUST live my life by a bunch of over the hill know-it-alls, I’d have spent the day with my grandparents, which many of these acts are old enough to be.
RADIO VOX | 7/9/2007, 4:54 pm EST
I agree with July’s comments about Tipper Gore. How quickly we forget how the Mrs. Gore slapped the notion of free expression in the face and how the record industry so easily gave in and began slapping warning stickers on CD’s.
Somewhere in Heaven, Frank Zappa is shaking his head in disbelief.

i thought it was really something for Madonna to get up out of her wheelchair and give it the ol’ showbiz best - she’s got at least another six months of decent performances in her before the warrantee on that thing runs out! hahahah. My husband Roger fed me milkshakes when I fell off that mechanical hand in Vegas and look at me! Hey, I’m talking to you! You want some of this?!

Josh | 7/9/2007, 2:44 pm EST
Actually, what was weird about Madonna’s “look me in the eyes stipulation” was that she wanted it to be done with one of those weird black hand-held things that the eye doctor (”optometrist” for you college kids)uses where they slide different lenses in and out and say “okay, now, better or worse?”
what’s wrong with these hollywood types anyway?
Josh | 7/9/2007, 2:41 pm EST
Actually, using other people’s names to write comments in this is about the only fun thing about these columns. right josh?

Live Earth = anti-environment | 7/9/2007, 2:19 pm EST
The people involved in setting this thing up are full of so much BS it is not even funny.
People have already mentioned the eltricity used to watch the concert, the jets needed to transport musicians, the gas needed to drive to the shows etc.
What nobody has pointed out is that AFTER the show was over, rather than disposing of waste in a environmentally friendly way (i.e. recycling) Live Earth instead sent the trash directly to the dump…without even trying to sort for recylcing. The whole thing was noted by reporters staying behind to see how much they really cared about helping the environment. The answer…only slightly more than zero.
If people really want an environmental concert…look no further than Bonnaroo. In addition to widespread recycling programs, they actually use renrewable resources to power stages (solar if you’re curious) and have the vehicles owned by the festival powered by biodesil.
Live Earth is full of hypocrits (none bigger than Al Gore himself) who care only about money and not the stated “goal” of the concert. If they really did care, they would have done so many things differently the show would hardly resemble the piece of crap we saw.

Soul Monkey | 7/9/2007, 1:59 pm EST
This whole idea is a bunch of hooey. What about this whole concert ideas was eco-friendly? What a sham. Granted, I’m a man made global warming naysayer, however, the same people supporting this cause must have used a few trees with all the extra drumsicks that were being tossed around. Even though this sham was touted to be “green”, how much electricity was used to garner sympathy for something that is going to happen no matter what man does? I guess a few of the performances were ok, ie. Foo Fighters, Pumpkins, Waters etc, but for the most part, it sucked. Kanye West is a bonehead, and btw, fuck the Police for giving that ass clown more time. Who was that chick that was a sumb as she was hot? Something about global warming causing the Indonesian earthquake and tsunami a few years ago. I’m not here to argue the global condition, I just don’t think man is the cause behind the warming. This kind of cycle has been going on for millions of years. To think man has any say over the regeneration of earth is Ludacris.

okay, people putting other people’s names and pretending to be them in these comments are stupid.
and madonna’s stipulations weren’t that strange. she probably gets really tired of people never looking her in the eye when interviewing her; especially about important issues.

Kanye is a no-talent that somehow slipped the the cracks of fame.
The Police must be kicking eachother in the nuts for green-lighting that idiots ‘performance’

Al Gored, Millions Bored | 7/9/2007, 12:47 pm EST
Kanye doesn’t care about black people. If he did he wouldn’t carry on like the token he was. What were the ratings for this show in ‘da hood?
Someone should tell the Pussycat Dolls that hairspray, silicone and whatever else they use isn’t environmentally friendly.
Can anyone tell Taking Back Sunday, AFI, and Fall Out Boy apart?
Melissa Etheridge is to rock n roll what … Madonna is. Who wants to be hectored by some rich 50 yr old slut turned mommmy who doesn’t want to believe she’s no longer relevant? BTW, what do you think HER carbon footprint is?
For Madonna’s 2006 World Tour, she flew by private jet, transporting a team of up to 100 technicians and dancers around the globe. Waiting in the garage at home, she has a Mercedes Maybach, two Range Rovers, an Audi A8 and a Mini Cooper S.
I’m buying an SUV to protest the tragic bore this waste of money is.
Better yet, I’ll donate to a charity trying to eliminate hunger and access to clean drinking water - a problem that affects millions TODAY rather than a possible, but hardly certain, calamity some time in the future.
.
Seriously | 7/9/2007, 12:33 pm EST
I was thinking this as I was watching. So much energy was wasted for lame acts to get their point across about Global Warming. If they were that concerned, they should’ve arranged for shuttle transportation from a centralized location, instead of having thousands of cars drive & park to this nonsense.
karina | 7/9/2007, 12:29 pm EST
i loved live earth! it was soo awesome! the only thing i didn’t like was madonna. she’s soo old and nasty.
but everything else was good! even if i dont care for global warming the concert was amasing!
who cares? | 7/9/2007, 12:27 pm EST
I like how this concert was full of some of the most over-rated artsists (not to mention polotocians) of the last decade.
Talking about: Al Gore (hypocrit, google him and hypocrit and you’ll find a great USA Today article about the numerous hypocritical things he does), plus Madonna (isn’t she past 50 now…she looks AWFUL), foo fighters, half-assed Smashing Pumpkins (once awesome, but come on Billy), plus Axl (you’re nothing now dude, please die already).
It was all a big money grab for the artists/ promoters/ Gore. What did it actually accompish?
jj | 7/9/2007, 12:10 pm EST
I’ve never seen so many acts repeat the mantra “Come on” “Let’s get this pawty stawted” with another rant of “Come on, Come on” It would seem to me that if their music was at all entertaining that it itself would be enough to get teh people started. So many bands nowadys have to do all this overhyped jumping around to charge their audiences. Put that energy into creating more inspiring music instead og the next forgetable single and you might have something. This isn’t necessarily commenting on Live Earth in particular but something I notice from a lot of todays giant multi act festivals and concerts. So much music today is forgetable
Thundercrotch | 7/9/2007, 12:10 pm EST
How much electricity was wasted so everyone could watch this snooze fest on television? Finally, a 3-D version of Ambien to help me drift peacefully off to sleep, dreaming of a time when music mattered and musicians had some (any) credibility.
RADIO VOX | 7/9/2007, 11:45 am EST
First of all, someone please slap the fool who handed Kanye West the microphone. Then slap Sting for always trying to reinvent The Police’s music, especially during a live performance. Yes, I agree that Sting looked annoyed once he realized that this was a bad idea, but it serves him right!
Was that John Mayer onstage playing guitar with the Police? I couldn’t tell because they didn’t really show him much. Whoever it was, I don’t blame him for keeping a low profile when Kanye took the stage.
The Police/Kanye West fiasco was reminiscent of another musical mismatch that took place on the Grammy awards(YAWN)when Jay-Z did the same thing by “yeah-yeahing” and “uh-huhing” his way over Chester Bennington and Paul McCartey singing “Yesterday.”
It goes to show that most rappers today are prefabricated acts who, when put to the test, can’t adlib with the cleverness and command of the old school rap masters. Someone like RUN-DMC or LL COOL J would have turned that mother out had it been them onstage with The Police and John Meyer.
Whoopideedo | 7/9/2007, 11:43 am EST
Alicia Keys & Kanye should be put in a soundproof cage. they could scream all day long, & none of us have to hear it.
Pumpkins blew! Some bands are better left broken up.
Jason | 7/9/2007, 11:40 am EST
Sting should’ve learned his lesson when Puffy Daddy P destroyed Every Breathe You Take way back when.
That concert blew, but I got to see Duran Duran live 2 weeks in a row. Wild. Boyz

I guarantee 2 billion people did not watch this nonsense. You are telling me 1 out of every 3 people in this world watched this? Dumb.
Anonymous | 7/9/2007, 11:13 am EST
The Pumpkins sucked. SOrry folks… Billy was just being his asshole self… Kayne West and the Police… Yes folks, you are all right, that was horrible… Roger Waters covering the last wee bit of Dark Side… Feels like I’m going to sleep… Got to love a concert that is promoting saving the world that flies artists around the world to preform their music through eletric sucking amps… Each one of these big rock stars in their big limo’s… No gas used there… Nope, I don’t see the irony… And GnR was asked to preform and never did - ahhh shucks… Maybe Axl could have provided us with some real deep thoughts of his own about the state of the earth…
One more thing America… That Robert Kennedy JR… What a speaker… What a mind… So who will be your next pres? A bunch of cut out closted war mongers, or a man with a mind and plans of action… What would the ghost of Hunter S Thompson have to say about that? We can only imagine…
farouk | 7/9/2007, 11:02 am EST

Well, my friends, that’s the definition of rap.
Cendor | 7/9/2007, 11:01 am EST
While I don’t dissagree with Kanye’s “message,” what exactly did he do that actually required talent? Anyone can get up, jump up and down and repeat lyrics to a song and say “yeah” and “uh.”
It looked like Sting was getting somewhat annoyed as well. I wonder if he knew how bad that was going to be. He should have.

JB4375 | 7/9/2007, 10:38 am EST
Wake up America: You forgot when Sting also kow-towed with Diddy by letting him do the lame-ass remake of “Every Breath You Take” in tribute to Biggie. This ridiculous shit has been going on for a while now.

Scott | 7/9/2007, 10:17 am EST
By all accounts, The Police are absolute perfectionists when it comes to their music. So why oh why do they deem it ok to let an imbecile like Kanye West to get onstage with them, jump around like a retard and shout one idiotic thing after another? It goes against everything they seemingly have always fought for in their musicianship.

The popularity of Kanye West is the last tragic sign that popular culture in America is dead. Even legends like The Police feel the need to kow-tow to him (the way Jimmy Page once did with P Diddy)? The shame, the shame, the shame.
Kyle | 7/9/2007, 10:07 am EST
I didn’t watch any of it live, but saw some of it from msn.com. All it did was get me more excited to see the Pumpkins in October.
