Weekend Rock List: Weirdest Shout-Outs

7/6/07, 1:32 pm EST

In memory of opera star Beverly Sills, who passed away earlier this week, we’ve kept The Hold Steady’s “The Swish,” on repeat, which contains the lyric “We spent the night last night in Beverly Hills / There was this chick that looked like Beverly Sills.” Craig Finn has a serious knack for quirky references — but he’s not the only artist to pack his songs with unlikely shout-outs. Which examples would you add?

considering Bob Dylan’s history with black women…his shout out to Alicia Keys isn’t weird at all.

John Hiatt | 7/9/2007, 3:59 pm EST

that guy who sings like Richard Manual in Counting Crows, Adam durvitz, says “I want to be Bob Dylan” in Mr. Jones. Lately Dylan has been performing his “Black Crow Blues” from “Another side of Bob Dylan” and changing the lyrics to “You most definitely do NOT want to be me, you phony-dreadlocked douchebag.”

Herschel Alan | 7/9/2007, 3:57 pm EST

Big Audio Dynamite’s song Stone Thames is about Rock Hudson.

Ian Curtis | 7/9/2007, 3:52 pm EST

And System of a Down sing “Tony Danza cuts in line.”

Nutso Speedo | 7/9/2007, 3:36 pm EST

maybe it’s just because I’ve been up for 9 days on meth but the birds outside keeping singing my name over and over again really fast but I don’t know the name of the song and this isn’t the Byrds with Roger McGuinn or the Birds with Ron Wood, these are real birds, sparrows I guess, or starlings. How do you tell them apart anyway?

DavidGee | 7/9/2007, 3:34 pm EST

And don’t forget that Elton John sang “Hold me close, Tony Danza…”

Reg Presley | 7/9/2007, 3:31 pm EST

Spot 1019 mentioned Lovecraft’s Cthulhu in “Dinky Dog the Demon Master.” (One fine night 2 skinheads did approach and say ‘your fine leather jacket will be our’,/but dinky just smiled and said ‘cthulhu come and do my bidding/and destroy these bad men who would harm me”

Yoko McCartney | 7/9/2007, 3:28 pm EST

In his song “God”, John Lennon references Elvis Costello - “I don’t believe in Elvis.”

Elliot Mazer | 7/9/2007, 3:26 pm EST

In Devo’s “Jocko Homo”, they reference the band Devo (We are Devo!” This is called being “self-referential and is a key ingredient of post-modern songwriting technique.

Dave Emlen | 7/9/2007, 3:21 pm EST

In the Kinks “Lola”, Ray Davies sings “She walked up to me and she asked me to dance/I asked her her name and in a dark brown voice she said ‘Lola Falana’”.

Anechoic Nebula | 7/9/2007, 3:18 pm EST

I’m not sure if anyone has heard of these shout outs, but, I’ll post them anyway:

Jawbreaker references Led Zeppelin in the song, “Bad Scene, Everyone’s Fault:” “So we went into the living room/someone was blasting Zeppelin/It sounded good/I felt ashamed/I knew every drum fill.”

Bad Religion kind of references Tommy by the Who in the song, “Along the Way:” “Like Tommy you are free, and you will not follow me.”

And speaking of Bad Religion, they refer to their first album in the song, “Los Angeles is Burning:” “More a question than a curse/how could hell be any worse?”

But here’s my favorite: The Weakerthans reference not only Derrida, but Shackleton in the song, “Our Retired Explorer (Dines With Michael Foucault In Paris, 1961):” “Thank you for the flowers and the book by Derrida…” and “I must say that in the right light, you look like Shackleton.”

Richie Unterberger | 7/9/2007, 3:17 pm EST

In the song “In My Life”,Beatle George Harrison sings: I know I often stop and think about them, especially George Bernard Shaw/In my life, I loved you more.”

They sing “I’m in love. What’s that song?

Also, Ryan Adams’ “Cracks in a Photograph.”

If you run into my sister

Probably the king of the weird shoutouts was Simon and Garfunkel shouting out to Joe Dimaggio in “Miss Robinson” On hearing the lyric “Where have you gone Joe Dimaggio”, Joe himself reportedly called Paul Simon and asked “What do you mean where have I gone? I haven’t gone anywhere.”

Grandmaster Flash referencing the song “Whiter Shade Of Pale” in “The Message” with the lyrics “skipped the light fandango”

Elvis Costello referencing the Bake-A-Lite in “No Action” “I hold you like I hold that bake-a-lite in my hand”
Pavement bitch-slapping Smashing Pumpkins in “Range Life” “Out on tour with the Smashing Pumpkins/nature kids/they don’t have no function/I don’t understand what they mean/and I don’t really give a fuck”

Counting Crows shouting out to Bob Dylan in “Mr. Jones”

and btw Alobar in “Werewolves Of London” it’s Lon Chaney Jr. not Claude Rains. But his hair was perfect.

Brandon | 7/7/2007, 6:49 pm EST

“The Walrus was Paul” - from Glass Onion.

Brandon | 7/7/2007, 6:48 pm EST

For those who don’t get the Tom Petty “Jammin’ Me” mentions of Piscapo, Murphy, and Redgrave - that came from Bob Dylan flipping through a newpaper and finding random articles. That’s where the names were, so they just threw them into the song.

Random references are the Beastie Boys’ turf, ultimately. REM has some good ones, too.

Jon | 7/7/2007, 6:11 pm EST

Velvet Underground’s “New Age” - quirkiest namedrop in rock history:

Wendy Notsid | 7/7/2007, 3:58 pm EST

The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Californication

Kurt Cobain, directly. It’s somewhat possible albums by Bowie (station to station) and Courtney Love (celebrity skin) are referenced too

……..

Pay your surgeon very well
To break the spell of aging
Celebrity skin is this your chin
Or is that war your waging

Space may be the final frontier
But it’s made in a Hollywood basement
Cobain can you hear the spheres
Singing songs off station to station
And Alderon’s not far away
It’s Californication

Camera Obscura’s “Llyod, I’m Ready To Be Heartbroken” refers to Llyod Cole, specifically the song “Are You Ready To Be Heartbroken?”

dylanfan | 7/6/2007, 5:34 pm EST

They’re selling postcards of the hanging
They’re painting the passports brown
The beauty parlor is filled with sailors
The circus is in town
Here comes the blind commissioner
They’ve got him in a trance
One hand is tied to the tight-rope walker
The other is in his pants
And the riot squad they’re restless
They need somewhere to go
As Lady and I look out tonight
From Desolation Row

Cinderella, she seems so easy
“It takes one to know one,” she smiles
And puts her hands in her back pockets
Bette Davis style
And in comes Romeo, he’s moaning
“You Belong to Me I Believe”
And someone says,” You’re in the wrong place, my friend
You better leave”
And the only sound that’s left
After the ambulances go
Is Cinderella sweeping up
On Desolation Row

Now the moon is almost hidden
The stars are beginning to hide
The fortunetelling lady
Has even taken all her things inside
All except for Cain and Abel
And the hunchback of Notre Dame
Everybody is making love
Or else expecting rain
And the Good Samaritan, he’s dressing
He’s getting ready for the show
He’s going to the carnival tonight
On Desolation Row

Now Ophelia, she’s ‘neath the window
For her I feel so afraid
On her twenty-second birthday
She already is an old maid

To her, death is quite romantic
She wears an iron vest
Her profession’s her religion
Her sin is her lifelessness
And though her eyes are fixed upon
Noah’s great rainbow
She spends her time peeking
Into Desolation Row

Einstein, disguised as Robin Hood
With his memories in a trunk
Passed this way an hour ago
With his friend, a jealous monk
He looked so immaculately frightful
As he bummed a cigarette
Then he went off sniffing drainpipes
And reciting the alphabet
Now you would not think to look at him
But he was famous long ago
For playing the electric violin
On Desolation Row

Dr. Filth, he keeps his world
Inside of a leather cup
But all his sexless patients
They’re trying to blow it up
Now his nurse, some local loser
She’s in charge of the cyanide hole
And she also keeps the cards that read
“Have Mercy on His Soul”
They all play on penny whistles
You can hear them blow
If you lean your head out far enough
From Desolation Row

Across the street they’ve nailed the curtains
They’re getting ready for the feast
The Phantom of the Opera
A perfect image of a priest
They’re spoonfeeding Casanova
To get him to feel more assured
Then they’ll kill him with self-confidence
After poisoning him with words

And the Phantom’s shouting to skinny girls
“Get Outa Here If You Don’t Know
Casanova is just being punished for going
To Desolation Row”

Now at midnight all the agents
And the superhuman crew
Come out and round up everyone
That knows more than they do
Then they bring them to the factory
Where the heart-attack machine
Is strapped across their shoulders
And then the kerosene
Is brought down from the castles
By insurance men who go
Check to see that nobody is escaping
To Desolation Row

Praise be to Nero’s Neptune
The Titanic sails at dawn
And everybody’s shouting
“Which Side Are You On?”
And Ezra Pound and T. S. Eliot
Fighting in the captain’s tower
While calypso singers laugh at them
And fishermen hold flowers
Between the windows of the sea
Where lovely mermaids flow
And nobody has to think too much
About Desolation Row

Yes, I received your letter yesterday
(About the time the door knob broke)
When you asked how I was doing
Was that some kind of joke?
All these people that you mention
Yes, I know them, they’re quite lame
I had to rearrange their faces
And give them all another name
Right now I can’t read too good
Don’t send me no more letters no
Not unless you mail them
From Desolation Row

I´m not sure how interesting this topic is…and there must be a ton of these. But OK, I´ll play along.
In Lambchop´s “Something´s going on” Kurt Wagner sings “…the picture of Michael and Bubbles…”
of course meaning Mr Jackson and his chimp.
And speaking of Lloyd Cole; I can´t remember the name of the song right now, and I´m too lazy to look it up, but in it he sings “…she looks like Eva Marie Saint in On The Waterfront…”
Not as weird as the Lambchop quote though.

Most of these aren’t “weird” shoutouts. They’re to be expected. Case in point: Van Morrisson referencing Jackie Wilson is hardly weird (Van’s a huge fan of 50’s R&B). Nor is it weird to list historical figures when it’s the framework of the song (”We Didn’t Start the Fire,” “It’s the End of the World as We Know It…,” etc.).

For weird, I agree with all of the people who mentioned “Paul’s Boutique,” but why stop there? The Beasties were doing that stuff on “Licensed to Ill”: “I’ve got more rhymes than Phyllis Diller,” “You know I’ve got rhymes like Abe Vagoda,” or “I’ve got more rhymes than Picasso got paint,” just to name a few.

The Joe Piscopo/Eddie Murphy/Vanessa Redgrave namecheck in Tom Petty’s “Jammin’ Me” (also co-written by Dylan) is classic, and just look what a boost it gave to Piscopo’s career.

But as far as pop music shout-outs go, it probably doesn’t get any more famous than Kim Carnes’ “Bette Davis Eyes”.

The Commodores’ also paid tribute to then-recently-deceased R&B legends Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson in “Nightshift”, their only major hit after Lionel Richie left the group (though both artists were mentioned by first name only).

Re: Eminem–A pet peeve I have with his “Christopher Reeves” references is that “Reeves” isn’t even the man’s name. It’s just Reeve. George Reeves was the 50’s TV Superman, so I get how the mistake is made.

My personal favorite reference in rap/hip-hop is the Beastie Boys’ “I got more hits than Sadaharu Oh” in “Hey Ladies”.

I have a good feeling that this list will feature a ton of rappers using the same formula as the Eminem reference above.

Btw, that formula is so weak and a perfect example of why rap/hip hop is so painful to listen to these days.
