Kelly Clarkson may have had a solid (but slightly disappointing) chart debut, but Ryan Adams has plenty to celebrate: His 758th album (okay, his ninth studio effort) Easy Tiger debuted at number seven, selling 61,038 copies. This marks the scruffy rocker’s highest chart debut of his career, besting Cold Roses, which hit the chart at number 26. Just last week the White Stripes earned the same distinction; this week Jack and Meg stayed near the top of the chart (at number four) plus albums by Amy Winehouse and Paul McCartney also made the top ten. So was it Adams’ new career as a homemade rap star or his penchant for taking the stage in a shower cap that boosted his profile?

Ryam is still the man to beat. Go ahead and try it. Betcha can’t…

It’s about time one of today’s best songwriters gets some fan recognition. I ordered my album off amazon and expect it by tomorrow….can’t wait.
Had Ryan been around in the 60’s or 70’s, he’d be a phenomenon–not that’ he’s completely derivative–he just isn’t too commercially viable today. Still it’s good to see that despite the music industry’s push of garbage like Fergie, etc. that an individualistic talent like Ryan Adams is starting to get some sales support.
Ryan Adams has enough talent to be bigger than the White Stripes, but he’d much rather be a cultist darling…..keep up the good work!

Ryan Admas just needs to be covered more. He currently has penned only one standard (when the stars go blue)but everything else of his has gone unnoticed. I think if more people covered him it would really transform him, like Peter Paul and Mary and the Byrds transformed Dylan commercially.

Couldn’t have happened to a more UNdeserving a-hole. He’s a complete hack who’s only ability is recreating his cd collection in the studio.
Jazmin | 7/5/2007, 3:13 pm EST
If people only took the time to listen to his work instead of bitching about him, they would realize he’s one talented mofo.
Easy Tiger may not be his best album , but it’s good nonetheless, congrats to Ryan, 7 is a good number.

“He’s a complete hack who’s only ability is recreating his cd collection in the studio.”
Andy, considering you seem to keep posting this exactly same sentence over and over again (see “Ryan Adams, Rap Star”) maybe you’re not the right person to be calling someone out for lack of originality.

Enjoy the live show while it lasts… Saw him in Philly last week. The band sounded great, but he barely acknowledged the audience and only played 75 minutes. I love Ryan, but WTF?
Burger King | 7/5/2007, 4:08 pm EST
Andy, why don’t you share with us some of the totally original artists you follow? That way, we’ll have a better context with which to judge your “cd collection” comment that you keep making.

I’ve bought every album of his out of the gate since rock n roll, but I was really impressed at how well he used the media. Rollins show, letterman, bribing rollingstone to cover the hell out of him, remember when they wrote that the set up speakers to listen to him in the bathroom? I love this new album, nothing really out of the park, but really solid and really good. I’ve haven’t stopped listening to it since muchmusic put it on the internets. Ryan deserves it.
ERik | 7/5/2007, 4:55 pm EST
Good for him.
#7 is respectable
Felipe | 7/5/2007, 5:00 pm EST
What a great album. I love Heartbreaker, Gold and Demolition and Jacksonville but this is a solid one!
BurtBacharach | 7/5/2007, 5:33 pm EST
“come pick it up
buy his new record
screw all his friends”
Little incentive using an old song to get all you people out to pick-up the new record. Heard a few bits and pieces, seems decent.
NOT his best work. | 7/5/2007, 5:50 pm EST
CUTS LIKE A KNIFE was 10x better not an awful album just kinda boring.
jizz | 7/5/2007, 6:18 pm EST

School must’ve gotten out early today, what with all these hilariously witty comments.
Chardylove | 7/5/2007, 6:42 pm EST
I love Ryan and was moved to purchase by the rave reviews
and the fact that it was starring me in the face at Starbucks
Random Redneck | 7/5/2007, 10:04 pm EST
More folks should buy his records and less should attend his shows. Horribly rude live.
Edric | 7/5/2007, 10:54 pm EST
This article makes me happy, I love Ryan Adams.
Matt | 7/6/2007, 12:48 am EST
I’m glad Ryan Adams’ album did so well, but I wish it was a better album. I love Cold Roses, and Easy Tiger is a collection of lullabyes in comparison.
Steven | 7/6/2007, 5:38 am EST
I saw him live recently and he was nothing short of warm and cordial…maybe you just have to get him on a good night
Rose | 7/6/2007, 10:19 am EST
you know, i just met him 3 weeks ago after his show, and I have to say he was extremely nice. i think his reputation as an ass is a little undeserved.
Roberto | 7/6/2007, 4:54 pm EST
He can beat a dead horse better than anyone. Beyond the mold? Naw. Talented? Yep. Worth buying? If you like something safe, not too jarring, probably so. But if you want something truly different, forget it.
anders | 7/7/2007, 12:48 am EST
I don’t like boring stale old rock music, that’s why I dislike this guy’s music.
None of your business | 7/7/2007, 6:21 pm EST
If you can do better then shut up and do it. Ryan has true talent, like it or not.
vince | 7/10/2007, 2:28 pm EST
Met ryan a few years ago, while touring for gold. He was the most generous and kind man. His music is very reflective of what alot of feel and soon as people aknowlage that, he’ll be more widely respected. the man deserves compliments

An artist’s work is there for the taking, but since you didn’t hear it first on MySpace, or on an episode of (insert teen drama here) it couldn’t actually be good right? Be the kid who doesn’t listen to all the music that gets put on ___JAMZ- THE HOT HITS up your arse! MTV, and FUSE, or whose tour is sponsored by an extreme energy drink. When you go to your 10 year reunion do you want to be the guy who says he really misses the days of Nickelback, and Fall Out Boy? I understand I may not “get it”. I’m not discounting why you like a certain band, every generation’s music speaks in a different language to its audience. There are relevant bands out there today Arcade Fire, Modest Mouse, Death Cab, Decemberists, and they are making really amazing music. Just know that other people have different tastes, and that’s not a bad thing. Ryan Adams writes music that speaks to some of us; maybe we’re just choosing to listen to what he has to say. If you don’t like it, don’t worry, theres probably not a decent radio station in your town with the balls to play it anyway. If you’re sick of hearing the same songs over and over just blame your friends, after all they were the one who texted in their votes and allowed them to record the song in the first place.
Scott | 8/15/2007, 7:25 pm EST
I think he’s a genius. I don’t get you guys who say he’s a hack. Give me an example of someone who’s not a hack.
Mike | 1/7/2008, 7:47 pm EST
Ryan Adams is too talented. Just insane what he has to offer, and I think it actually scares people.
