Pete Doherty Pleads Guilty to Drug Charges, Being Tardy

7/3/07, 11:30 am EST

peteWe usually avoid reporting on drug-related Pete Doherty news, mainly because it’s more of a “daily occurrence” than “actual news,” but today we’ll temporarily lift our Doherty-on-drugs embargo. This morning, Doherty pleaded guilty to a litany of charges in a London court stemming from a May 5 arrest. Doherty was pulled over for two driving offenses, and police uncovered marijuana and crack cocaine at the time of arrest, and ketamine and heroin after a strip search. This morning, Doherty played the “Will he or won’t he show up?” game that fans attending his concerts are quite familiar with. After Doherty was two and a half hours late to his own hearing, the judge issued an arrest warrant. Doherty magically appeared minutes later, and was forced to plead guilty to showing up late for court. The judge — who observed, “It seems that there has not been much difference in his use of drugs” — sent Doherty to rehab; he’s due to reappear in court August 7 for sentencing.

I despise the whole idea of a talentless drop out like this man getting so much attention.

Lloyd Christmas - Try listening to music from 30 years ago to see how unoriginal this man is. Then you’ll see it IS possible to play chaotic rock ‘n’ roll in tune with an actual vocalist.

Seeing as things have progressed now, I don’t understand why he gets any coverage.

It’s not news, it’s reality updates on a messed up individual. Maybe if the media gave him and others like him less attention, they’d have to try a bit harder. Which might make the music better….

That, or just find some decent bands?

It amazes me that Doherty’s still alive.

teejay | 7/14/2007, 6:44 pm EST

In last weeks attempted terrorist attacks in the U.K. , a petrol bomb was thrown onstage at a Pete Doherty gig. He drank it.

Ohh I'm scared 'kev watch out' | 7/3/2007, 2:59 pm EST

I can guarantee my record collection is far more diverse and eclectic than you’ll ever know.

I believe my statement reads that I own ‘Up The Bracket’ and that it isn’t ‘that’ good. Not sure where Ms. Clarkson fits in w/ Kasabian, The View, The Twang, Charlatans, Oasis, the reunited Verve (heard of them punk?) or Kasabian.

Not shut your pie hole little boy!

‘The Libs’ had some great tracks (Time For Heroes, What A Waster, Up The Bracket & Death On The Stairs) but some ear cringers as well and this article is about Doherty anyway….again.

Now I’ll think I’ll go listen to Husker Du’s ‘Warehouse:Songs & Stories’ in it’s entirety.

Happy 4th!

the libertines, great debut horrible followup. the band just cant play the guitar very very messy. and not in a good way.

Sam | 7/3/2007, 1:16 pm EST

I do prefer if they do cover his music rather than his habitual arrests, but none the less he is one of the best musicians and even more so lyricists of modern day. There wouldn’t be bands like the view if it weren’t for the libertines, whose music was groundbreaking at it’s time. By the way the view was partially mentored by Doherty.

kev...watch out | 7/3/2007, 1:12 pm EST

what did I tell you about you’re horrible tastes a couple weeks back…that I’d hit you.

“Almost noone knows who his bands are.” Are you kidding me?!? The Libertines?!?

You obviously have no taste what so ever. I don’t care if you don’t like it, but to call it unlistenable makes no sense.

Go back to listening to Kelly Clarkson and watching American Idol loser.

hey "ummmmm..." | 7/3/2007, 1:05 pm EST

Even though the Libertines only lasted two albums (with “UP The Bracket” being AMAZING and “The Libertines” being very good), they made such an impression that this guy deserves daily attention.

I mean come on, if Rolling Stone is going to talk about American Idol so much, they’d BETTER talk about dude. And yeah, he is a crackhead, but you know what, he helped make “Up The Bracket.”

After he ODs (a logical person has to believe that will happen at some point), I’ll still support daily updates from the grave.

Get over it.

I have ‘Up The Bracket’ and half the songs are unlistenable. What is RS’s fascination w/ covering him. Almost no one knows who he or his bands are. He’s no Liam Gallagher.

How about covering better UK bands like Kasabian, The View, The TWang and bands still going strong like Charlatans UK, Oasis and the reunited Verve.

Marc | 7/3/2007, 12:59 pm EST

I agree, this guy is the biggest crackhead of out generation. How could he not be in prison.

Bizarro Pat Boone | 7/3/2007, 12:58 pm EST

Everybody knows this is really nobody!

ummmm | 7/3/2007, 12:43 pm EST

One of the most important musicians?!?!? The guy is a no talent crackhead! His voice is horrible, his music is horrible… how is this person not in prison by now?!?!

Kate M. | 7/3/2007, 12:42 pm EST

Well, like, I told him so. I mean, is he ever gonna learn anything. Geesh! Anybody gotta straw?

Lloyd Christmas | 7/3/2007, 12:40 pm EST

Pete Doherty is one of the most important musicians in modern music. No one comes close to the ideas, attitude, and coolness that was the Libertines.

cota | 7/3/2007, 12:30 pm EST

Ive never understood the fascination with the guy. It would probably be different if his band(s) got some air time on american radio (album reviews usually seem positive). Why is that, when he seems so popular elsewhere?

donniemac | 7/3/2007, 12:21 pm EST

I keep remembering “Up the Bracket” and what could have been…boy what a gyp

trudy | 7/3/2007, 12:13 pm EST

ugh… i’m so sick of him. could you guys cover some, like, music, or something?

dooder | 7/3/2007, 12:07 pm EST

you guys don’t cover Pete Doherty?? He used to be in the news on this site every frickin’ day…you even had a clock up that counted his time between arrests/rehab stints.

Harry Pothead | 7/3/2007, 11:54 am EST

C’mon, musicians should be allowed to do all the drugs they want. Some of the best musicians were always high on something. Being stoned inspires and spurs creativity.

Drugs Delaney | 7/3/2007, 11:42 am EST

Sweet.

Does this dude make music too?
