Our National Anthem: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

7/3/07, 5:11 pm EST

In honor of America’s birthday, we proudly present our picks for the best, worst and most shockingly awful renditions of “The Star-Spangled Banner” ever to grace the annals of YouTube. Note to all future musicians who will perform our national anthem: There’s only a 45 percent success rate, so please make sure you memorize all the words before attempting America’s most cherished song in front of thousands of people. While some of our favorite renditions (The Grateful Dead, Carl Lewis) weren’t available on the Net, we stand and remove our caps for this list of anthems. Happy 4th!

THE GOOD

The best: Jimi Hendrix’s classic performance at Woodstock.

Phish’s a cappella version before a New Jersey Nets game.

The best Super Bowl ever? Whitney Houston in her pre-Bobby Brown prime (plus the New York Giants went on to win the big game).

The Piano Man, Billy Joel, at this year’s Super Bowl.

Marvin Gaye makes the national anthem sound romantic during his rendition from the 1983 NBA All-Star Game.

THE BAD

Michael Bolton forgets what the ramparts we watched were doing.

Christina Aguilera fails to merge hip-hop with patriotism.

Slash goes the Hendrix route, but ends up sounding like a kid at guitar practice.

R. Kelly had the right idea, but there’s way too much dancing/hand clapping.

Hillary Clinton painfully forgets (and painfully reminds us) that she’s wired for sound.

Almost as bad as lighting an American flag on fire.

This cop should be arrested for his horrible rendition.

Roseanne Barr banshees her way through the anthem, prompting San Diego to riot.

Borat sings Kazakhstan’s national anthem.

Whitney Houston’s rendition was pretty good, but it was pre-recorded. Don’t know how much credit you can give her for that.

toby | 7/3/2007, 7:26 pm EST

rosanne barr’s was perfectly bad,but in a good way…….given todays state of affairs.

Anonymous | 7/3/2007, 7:41 pm EST

Marvin’s rendition was the S@IT!!

eric | 7/3/2007, 8:25 pm EST

I didn’t think billy joel’s was all that great – he was a bit flat and off key at times
but I guess in the span of the song has some good moments as well

confession | 7/3/2007, 8:33 pm EST

anyone else get a hardon watching jimi play?

Also, just so people know, hearing yourself while singing in a stadium is next to impossible. It is probably the worst environment to sing in for so many reasons.

eric again | 7/3/2007, 8:34 pm EST

slash was fine until he played that second song at the end ???
xtina – pretty good if she drops the drums and repeated words – she can SING

Geoff | 7/3/2007, 8:52 pm EST

Nothing will ever beat this one…this was even closer to us going into Iraq then Whitney Houston’s version at the Super Bowl

stimpack | 7/3/2007, 10:32 pm EST

borat it is!!!

Michael Wilkinson | 7/3/2007, 10:50 pm EST

Does anyone know how well Steve Miller sang at the Saints-Eagles playoff game? I like Billy Joel, but I thought he butchered the anthem.

DrJ | 7/3/2007, 10:51 pm EST

Jimi and Borat are the best.
For worst, I’d nominate the version that Ted Nugent starts his concerts with–kind of like Hendrix’s but with right wing idiocy in place of talent and creativity

Joe | 7/3/2007, 10:53 pm EST

Phish? Good? Erm, no.

autobotjazz | 7/3/2007, 11:00 pm EST

The second song that Slash played was the Canadian national anthem. It was appropriate given the context.

Skullfreak | 7/3/2007, 11:09 pm EST

You forgot Stevie Ray Vaughn, Houston Astros, 1984……coked up out of his mind, even players booed….

senor sweatypants | 7/3/2007, 11:35 pm EST

YouTube Carl Lewis’ National Anthem…Deeeelicioussss!!!!

Jim | 7/4/2007, 6:55 am EST

Check out Eddie Vedder’s one from the 98 NBA finals.Pure class

t | 7/4/2007, 8:30 am EST

I thought Slash was awesome

kelly | 7/4/2007, 9:42 am EST

Slash was just awesome!! how can you consider that as ”bad”? like a kid at guitar practise!!!? cmon!!

Jose | 7/4/2007, 9:58 am EST

Borat’s is my favorite

wesley styles | 7/4/2007, 10:13 am EST

i think that whitney and beyonce did an INCREDIBLE job at the anthem. and for the record, just about everyone who performs the anthem at the superbowl lipsynchs it.

goose neck | 7/4/2007, 11:04 am EST

hey “Confession”, let’s get a 6 pack and watch Jimi play!!

Jake Burns | 7/4/2007, 12:31 pm EST

Go to yputube and find the Chicago Black Hawks rendition of the anthem during the 1st Persian Gulf War. AWESOME!

mr.goodtimes | 7/4/2007, 12:41 pm EST

eric,

thats the canadian anthem you idiot…obviously if they are in TO they are gonna play it…slash fucking ripped, if i heard someone play that well at guitar practice i would be sending him to the studio

Righteous Johnson | 7/4/2007, 1:27 pm EST

Rosie was just disrespecful. No one can sound that bad w/out trying.

Christine | 7/4/2007, 2:05 pm EST

Slash, performance bad? Give me a break!!!

Markus | 7/4/2007, 2:12 pm EST

Hendrix, obviously, a classic.

Phish, novel, but fun.

Whitney at her best, prerecorded or not.

Billy Joel, mediocre at best.

But Marvin Gaye…wow.

Anonymous | 7/4/2007, 3:21 pm EST

Christina’s wasn’t that bad. She sounded good…the arrangement was just off. Doesn’t warrant being on the worst list I think.

Where’s Beyonce’s rendition on this list? Hers was fantastic as well.

Kyle | 7/4/2007, 4:12 pm EST

err…the second song at the end is the Canadian national anthem. giving they were in Toronto….

Where is Ben Harper’s slide version, that was a good one.

gonzalo | 7/4/2007, 4:33 pm EST

slash es excelente

The Gibson | 7/4/2007, 5:55 pm EST

Jimi still rules all. He captured America in 1969 within that rendition. Beauty.

CARRIEROCKS | 7/4/2007, 6:54 pm EST

Carrie Underwood delivered an amazing anthem at the nfl championship game in seattle last year. She also kicked butt at the allstar baseball game in pittsburg last year.

Harry | 7/4/2007, 8:47 pm EST

For all the uneducated, the second song Slash plays is a little tune called the Canadian national anthem. Further, I personally don’t know many kids who play like that at guitar practice.

shimmy shimmy cocoa puff | 7/4/2007, 9:09 pm EST

why don’t people know that Whitney and many others pre-record their renditions! Hands down she was the best – Beyonce was good but VERY by-the-book, she brought nothing original to the song….rosanne was trashy and unfunny.

Coates | 7/4/2007, 9:47 pm EST

You forget Carl Lewis’ rendition at a Chicago Bulls game. It’s the funniest thing ever! Guaranteed.

Helvis | 7/4/2007, 10:02 pm EST

My favorite version was sung by Bob Forrest right after his band, Thelonious Monster, released their “Beautiful Mess” CD on Capitol. It was before a Clippers game at the Sports Arena in LA. You must have a video of that somewhere. Beats the hell out of all your selections. Frenchie accompanied Bob on harmonica. Their wardrobe beats all your other videos, hands down.

nick | 7/5/2007, 2:53 am EST

ray charles did an amzing job at fenway in 04

alex | 7/5/2007, 6:39 am EST

sorry, and U2? they have a lots of best performances!

Chris | 7/5/2007, 7:28 am EST

a painful ommission is the Grateful Dead at the old Candlestick Park. a classic version.

Chris | 7/5/2007, 9:24 am EST

Aside from the jackass comments of the announcer (”Where the grass is green and the players are ready”?), Slash aquitted himself quite nicely, thank you. Nothing tops Marvin, though. Cool, confident, oozing soul. How do you top that one? You don’t.

Drew | 7/5/2007, 10:41 am EST

Borat’s National Anthem = a classic moment in modern cinema

Mojoryder | 7/5/2007, 10:51 am EST

Hey … honourable mention should go to our hometown girl Alanis doing a fab job of both anthems here in Ottawa this year during the Stanley Cup finals. Refreshing change as most pop singers end up butchering anthems. Check out the link.

Mojoryder | 7/5/2007, 10:53 am EST

OK link didn’t work … search on youtube if want to check it out.
Use Alanis Anthem Senators as your search

IMRight | 7/5/2007, 11:36 am EST

Seems the masses have spoken. Slash 1, Rolling Stone 0. We all expect a retraction.

And Libertad, damn good.

CDawg | 7/5/2007, 1:03 pm EST

Slash…Got better with the second song, Nicer song..better effort than the first one

iwastheredude | 7/7/2007, 2:21 pm EST

What are you talking about? Slash’s performance was amazing.

Sam | 7/9/2007, 2:42 pm EST

Phish???????? That sucked! Jose Feliciano was 10 times better than that.

Steve | 7/9/2007, 2:47 pm EST

You forgot to post Carl Lewis as the worst ever…at least the funniest ever.

Dave | 7/10/2007, 10:09 am EST

I think Phish’s is great! A relatively unusual randition and the crowd obviously loved it!
