Master P’s Latest: So This Is What Profanity-Free Hip-Hop Sounds Like

7/3/07, 12:34 pm EST

Master P and his son, Romeo, are taking the fight against what some people deem to be objectionable rap lyrics seriously: They co-founded Take a Stand Records, a label that will put out “hip-hop artists with street music without offensive lyrics.” Today the label’s maiden digital release with independent online music store AmieStreet.comGutta Music All-Stars, a mixtape of hip-hop singles originally released in May — comes out, featuring a bonus Master P/Romeo duet called “Let the Kids Grow.”

So, how does this piano-laden slow-roller compare to some vintage Master P, lyrically?

Here’s what you can expect from “Let the Kids Grow”: “Let the kids grow, let the kids dream / I was lost, I used to hustle in the same street / Let the kids win, let the kids play / If we change for tomorrow be a brighter day”

And 2005’s “I Ain’t Play’n”: “I left the hood for a week, and my name start ringin’ / Like I’m hustlin’ sellin dope, you got beef then bring it / I heard fire did this, and P.D. they trippin’ / That’s why I sleep with two gats, you never catch me slippin’.”

As long as it’s not too “up with people” there should be no issue with a rap CD being profanity free. Master P isn’t stupid, this is a way for him to reach the 10-15 year olds (a huge music market that does not know how to steal music yet)

wha the hell? the lets artists talk dammit! I lust finished reading a book writen 55 years ago about the future called farenhight 451, and in the future books were illeagle because all minorty groups keept trying to ban books, and eventully the goverment had to cencor information. as the book said it itsself, “Blacks dont like ‘little black sambo’? burn it.democrats don`t like Pro-republican books?burn them.it goes to the point of insanity.”

Not only is this happining with books nowadays (Harry potter, davinche code) the exact same can be said for music. the movie 300 was very violent,so it got a R rating and it was fine. a song has violent material, so it got a parental advisory sticker.why isnt it fine?

If kids can listen to any music and not learn 50 new ways to say, “I fucked that bitch in the ass,” or, “I shot that motherfucka in the head,” then I’ll support it. That’s why I bought the first couple Linkin Park albums for my little brother. Really, it’s about personal accountability. If you don’t want your kids to hear it, monitor your kids. Don’t let them get ahold of the new 50 Cent record. Don’t call for a ban, or whatever…

I agree that censorship is bad, but I also agree that hip-hop has just gotten lazy and stupid with it’s limited, profanity driven vocabulary. I’d actually prefer to hear rappers find a more creative way to say “the nigga had to die, so I bust a cap in his ass and slapped his ho!” I want to listen to songs written by intelligent lyricists who have a good grasp on the variety and diversity of the english language. Hooray for you Master P!

I got a kick out of “Kenny’s Dead,” from Chef Aid, though I don’t think it was specifically about Kenny.

    Steven | 7/4/2007, 4:34 am EST

There’s nothing wrong with bringing a little positivity to rap music. As long as they aren’t for a ban on music that does have profanity, I’m all for it. It’s an absolutely saturated and stale form of music right now anyway, so lets bring in something new to freshen it up a little.

    david | 7/4/2007, 11:46 am EST

stop bitching about how hip hop is lazy. your right, but you shoudnt ban it. if you want great rappers with amazing lyrics,do what I do.listen to eminem, nas, brother ali, people like that.

    Jimmy | 7/4/2007, 12:01 pm EST

oh how i care so little about this topic…

No Name Jr. | 7/5/2007, 9:12 am EST

Percy know what he doing. He aint broke, but he need to keep money coming in to live the life he want. No limit Super days looooong gone. P and the boys cant keep up with the rap game no more (which is sad since the rap game sucks). So, he hitting a market where there is really no competition. Smat business man he is. If he do well, watch the copy catters.

    thatgirl | 7/5/2007, 10:58 am EST

i agree. children should stay in a child’s place. adults should have the choice to listen to whatever music, play whatever video games and watch whatever we wanna watch. WATCH YOUR CHILDREN!

    RealMusic | 7/5/2007, 5:36 pm EST

I commend P for his efforts…he’s grown, its obvious that his conscious has gotten to him..and its obvious that he has raised a fine young man…

    Groovecollective | 7/5/2007, 5:56 pm EST

The brotha is trying to make a difference. I wouldn’t have a problem with profanity if the conscious rap got the same love from the mainstream music media. Unfortunately, that is not the case. It seems the mainstream music channels (Clear Channel, Viacom etc) have chosen to promote the most offensive/ negatives Black images possible. Hopefully the huge drop in sales (almost 40%) will change this trend. It’s time for the real rap artists and fans to reclaim the art Hip Hop was intended to be.

    P-boy | 7/5/2007, 6:27 pm EST

Ok firstly I thought that there is something wrong with P!Talking about rappin without offending words but later I heard the song and I felt it!
At all I though rap is about the real life … That’s why I love P and I support him and Rome 100 %!
Although I definitely dislike 50 cent … he is a foolish person for me!

    realmuzicmami | 7/5/2007, 6:50 pm EST

I give the homie P mad props for puttin this out. He reppin the N.O. so i gottal hold him down. Hip Hop don’t have to be about killin and cussin. That’s what’s up P. Do ya thing papi.

    Jeff | 7/5/2007, 7:27 pm EST

Beatiful song bra. I’m lovin that. This is real, real good man. I will definently buy the cd.We don’t have to act like animals toward each other. Self hatred is a beast. Karma is like a Tornado or a sudden strike of lightning. It hits you before you know what happen. Don’t let your hands be colored with another man or childs blood unjustly. I know deep down inside the murder capitol has a big heart. Master P is an example of that huge heart. Keep it coming brother. Change the world. New Orleans we love you more that life itself.

    JL | 7/5/2007, 8:32 pm EST

MASTER P DOING THE RIGHT THING EVERY AND I’M WITH HIM AND HIS SON HUNDRED PERCENT. BECAUSE WE NEED TO TAKE A STAND, P GO AHEAD DO YOUR THING. GO HEARTS ALWAYS WIN.

    Blck Cat | 7/5/2007, 10:59 pm EST

Its cool i feel P. He’s a hustler and we all know that. Now if its genuine or not thats another word.

But fuck the rest of these cats on that change rap shit. Like russell simmons he got rich off blood money now he want to holla that shit to draw attention. he from the hood he could have sit down a few cats and talked instead of jumping to the media.

Lets boycout his shit like that rush card, his books, phat farm, baby fat, and anything else. then watch him shut the fuck up.

And if im dieing let me go dont bring al sharpton or jesse jacksoon to help me. like david banner said “we need better leaders in the black community”.
shit ill follow banner before i follow them.

    ali | 7/6/2007, 4:26 am EST

Good job P. I believe that grown ups should listen to what they want to listen to. I personally like 50, Emenim, Luda, TI, and ext. but I don’t let any of this stuff influence my decisions. I think what P is doing is great for the young kids and teenagers.

    Daivd frazier | 7/6/2007, 5:17 pm EST

great job P do yo thang. I used to be out there like that but I feel like I want to do positive things. My friends think im trippin but hey who cares, i know what right and since im grown now, i think i should act like an adult. Grow up 50!

i want to say big ups to p, because with influence like that there will be hope in the future, and if p can change then the rest of these clowns can to.

    John | 9/20/2009, 2:40 pm EST

Well i’m not gonna lie, his new material is awful but honest, most of his old stuff was god awful also, but written to sell records (drugs, 187, that shit). Doesn’t change the fact that he’s done an amazing 360 and starting charities, funding buildings that’ll save lives. These actions speak louder than any lyrics, foul/clean could and is what matters and counts. Solid REAL contribution, not lyrical violent fiction. And what impresses me most is how he’s not pulling a Bono and using it to get media attention. He’s out of the spotlight doing it for the right reasons. I thought he went bankrupt and dropped off the map til I read up on his awakening. Ironic how the dirty money spent on his albums that LITERALLY TEACH you how to make crack in one his better songs is now going back to help some potential victims of his earlier influence. If only he could have influenced his coward brother “C-murder” before he beat down and murdered his 16 year old fan.

    G-Wiggles | 9/30/2009, 3:22 am EST

I used to rock all of Master P shit back in the Mid to Late 90’s. It would be better if he just left the music business alone completely, because he just looks like a damd hypocrite now. This none violent rap shit is cornier than a matha fucka bitch niccas! How would Richar Pryor have looked telling Bill Cosby style jokes. Fuck… stupid, P should keep doing it the old waw, or close the damn studio.

    G-Wiggles | 9/30/2009, 3:30 am EST

I’m just glad the mutha fucka stop making those stank ass movies. He would have been better off making Porn with all those whores running around Lousiana. The nigga would have gone platinum, off that NO Booty. Best believe that Bitch NiCAAAAS!!
