White Stripes Enjoy Their Hottest Sales Week Ever!

6/27/07, 12:42 pm EST

The White Stripes have scored a career-best debut with their sixth album, Icky Thump. Last week, 223,056 people bought copies of the blues-rock duo’s latest opus, securing them the number two spot on the Billboard charts behind Bon Jovi (whose Lost Highway moved 291,532 copies). This marks both the White Stripes’ highest chart debut ever and their hottest week of sales: 2005’s Get Behind Me Satan entered the charts at number three, selling 189,000 copies in its first week. Somewhere, Jack and Meg are surely clinking Red Stripes (to a rigid beat) in celebration.

david | 6/27/2007, 12:59 pm EST

why tghe hell is the only positive comment about meg white about how she looks…?she happens to be a good drummer

BIT | 6/27/2007, 1:03 pm EST

somehow, it bothers me that more people bought a country album by Bon Jovi than this awesome thing.

cota | 6/27/2007, 1:05 pm EST

David, I can’t agree with you more,,,,folks should give this gal a break,,,i’d like to see a Meg White solo album (maybe let Jack produce it, like he did with Lorretta),,,,her voice is sexxy and haunting!!

The immortal shame | 6/27/2007, 1:06 pm EST

Dave…
I know she’s a phenomenal drummer. That’s what makes her a luscious sex pot. She can smack my snare any day.
Her hat may be a french tickler, though, which is just dirty.

Billy Braggington | 6/27/2007, 1:10 pm EST

Its the way she plays the drums for me… can’t put my finger on it but its kind of sexy.

Billy Braggington | 6/27/2007, 1:11 pm EST

G-Dawg | 6/27/2007, 1:34 pm EST

It wasn’t for torrents, limewire, and the library, I would have totally bought icky thump. Its great btw.

Sara | 6/27/2007, 1:55 pm EST

Worst album of the year thus far.White Stripes are crap!

kyosti | 6/27/2007, 2:02 pm EST

Bon jovi sucks! The white stripes are way better!

milkman bassedelic | 6/27/2007, 2:03 pm EST

dude this album is one of the best ive heard in a while btw bon jovi is not “real music” this is i mean real music is stripped down bare bones rawness such as the who. NOT Bon Jovi

dpr | 6/27/2007, 2:05 pm EST

This album joins The Shins as the best I’ve bought in 2007

uuuummmm | 6/27/2007, 2:16 pm EST

Seriously, you people that take the time to write into these things just to badmouth EVERY act need to relax a little bit.

woot | 6/27/2007, 2:16 pm EST

White stripes rock, bon jovi sucks.

orson | 6/27/2007, 2:23 pm EST

icky thump is terrific. it saddens me that america has been fooled by bon jovi, who has never been good. bon jovi can’t make up their minds whether they want to make awful rock music or awful country music.

viva las rayas blancas

Banjo | 6/27/2007, 3:16 pm EST

So far, Icky Thump is the best album of the year! Meg’s drumming isn’t great, but she does what is needed to make the band sound good. ever hear of Ringo?
Someone on here called them EMO…Do you even know what emo is?
being beat out by a bon jovi country album doesn’t even count. People will buy anything by Bon Jovi because that’s how the blind pop-fed masses work. the fact that an album by a non-pop band made #2 is a feat in itself! Long live the White Stripes!!!

Crisco | 6/27/2007, 3:20 pm EST

I bought it…I listen to it…I LOVE IT! GO WHITE STRIPES!!!

Favorite song: Rag and Bones.

auggie | 6/27/2007, 3:33 pm EST

sara sounds like a real nice girl

Odys Coltrane | 6/27/2007, 4:05 pm EST

Second mediocre album in a row after a string of masterpieces. Now officially off my radar.

Joao | 6/27/2007, 4:14 pm EST

They deserve better, the new album is amazing, some of their best work. Jack White is now oficially my new guitar hero, he’s already up there with Jimmi Page, Hendrix,Clapton…(in my book of course).Just listen to “Little Cream Soda” and “Catch Hell Blues” from the new album and see wath I mean.

Christov | 6/27/2007, 4:17 pm EST

BON JOVI IS HOOOOOORRRRIBLE!!!!! It sadens me to see bon jovi still making it. Ok Ok in the 80’s yeah sure whatever they had big hair, and girls liked em, but you didn’t know any better!!! This is like 20 years later wise up they SUCK!!!! I would like to see the white stripes be the downfall of “crunk” or “club” music because it is so damn repetitive and talentless.

Stuporfly | 6/27/2007, 4:27 pm EST

Thanks for the White Stripes update! We hadn’t heard anything about them yesterday and I was nigh on inconsolable.

herb | 6/27/2007, 4:35 pm EST

first off, why do people even care how many albums get sold? it isn’t an indicator of how good an album or band is. It’s also funny to see people take time out of their day to rip pretty much anything. I guess it angers them when so many other people enjoy the Stripes, which have put out album after album of greatness. Don’t worry about other people having the wrong type of good time.

DeadHorse | 6/27/2007, 4:40 pm EST

If I didn’t know better, I would have thought MTV was playing a joke on me when I saw their headline about Bon Jovi ‘Thumping’ the White Stripes. What a joke. Icky rocks!

Jordan | 6/27/2007, 5:10 pm EST

I love the White Stripes new album. They are tremendous together and continue to impress me with their refreshingly original music. Jack White is an AMAZING guitar player. Meg White has incredible jacks.

1/2 a STAR | 6/27/2007, 5:11 pm EST

SAVE YOUR MONEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! | 6/27/2007, 5:13 pm EST

WHITE STRIPES ARE CRAP!

Ryan T. | 6/27/2007, 5:26 pm EST

I can’t believe there are so many people in here with crappy musical tastes. The White Stripes are amazing and Icky Thump is a fantastic album. They are up there with Zeppelin for me now, they are never boring and never let me down. Their live show is something that can’t be beat, check out their DVD. The people who don’t dig it are just missing out. Sorry, you just suck and while you are at it pick me up the new Linkin Park, bunch of morons. Go back to whacking it in your parent’s basement.

Lumpy | 6/27/2007, 6:55 pm EST

The fact that Bon Jovi is No.1 in America in 2007 really says something about where the country’s at. Ick.

T-Nasty | 6/27/2007, 8:07 pm EST

Wow look at all the arguing. Seems the fans and non-fans here need some Midol. Congrats to both bands for charting so high!

The Ultimate Truth | 6/27/2007, 8:07 pm EST

It’s funny whenever you give people a chance to give their opinion they ususally show their asses by talking crap about stuff aka the White Stripes so i ask all of you nay sayers, do you think you can do better because i for one don’t think you can, love each other its a whole lot easier

white stripes = god | 6/27/2007, 8:36 pm EST

for the people bad mouthing the white stripes,i would love to know what type of music they consider to be good. the white stripes are one of the few bands today keeping true, gritty, raw rock and roll alive, and anyone who can’t swallow their pride and notice their talent is ignorant and/or have never even given them a chance, and are too distracted by their looks and motif.

Stuporfly | 6/27/2007, 8:49 pm EST

Will you uptight White Stripes apologists just clam up? It’s okay for people to not be into a band, no matter how hot shit you think they are. No one is jealous or tone deaf or ignorant just because they don’t get a boner for scratchy faux blues and a metronome perfect, but ultimately dull beat.

Music is a matter of taste. There’s no definitive good or bad.

Except Creed. God, those guys fucking sucked. No debate.

baconballs | 6/27/2007, 9:38 pm EST

Meg is a robot.

A robot with killer honkers, mind you – but a robot, nonetheless.

44-DDs | 6/27/2007, 10:20 pm EST

Meg is gorgeous, I want her body. Duh they would have this for record sales on this album it is their best by far! Icky Thump is gonna clean house at the Grammys.

James | 6/27/2007, 10:23 pm EST

I have to say the Icky Thump is a pleasant surprise from their very first major label. The stripes have gone back to the gritty sound that made me fall in love with them from the start. #2 slot! there maybe hope still for the mass population of American idol morons that keep making a mess of the music industry.

spencer | 6/27/2007, 11:34 pm EST

Man, 223,000 copies gets you the number 2 slot in the Billboard sales. tough times.

Yea, I’m not surprised. This is a great album. It’s not Elephant, but it’s right there. Didn’t know Bon Jovi came out with a new disc. That’s the only reason Icky Thump’s not number one.

If you told people in 1987 that Bon Jovi would have a #1 album 20 years from now, they would have laughed in your face. And the White Stripes have proven that they will remain popular 20 years from now. If you want to laugh at my face, do it now.

The Grubby 1 | 6/28/2007, 1:01 am EST

As fantastic as it is that the White Stripes’ success continues to balloon, it is an absolute heartbreaking shame that a no-talent band like Bon Jovi beat them out of a much deserved number 1 spot. It actually sickens me a little.

jimmy the pig | 6/28/2007, 1:51 am EST

White Stripes suck? Then go and buy Bon Jovi’s album. Idiots.

Lido | 6/28/2007, 3:18 am EST

The White Stripes are certainly not the worst band out there, but IMHO – I can’t get through one of their cd’s. You guys who like Jack and the stripes, that’s nice, but that’s all. It’s your flavor of ice cream. There is just no pleasure there for me. To me they are just boring. Their production is tiresome and the playing is uninteresting. Any comparisons to Jimi Hendrix or Eric Clapton are completely off the mark. Jack’s a competent guitar player, but that’s all, he’s just mediocre in the realm of guitar players famous and otherwise. Jack writes some cute songs but he can’t perform them. Jack Johnson’s interpretation of one of his tunes was amusing, but it was so much better than the original. Sadly though, the song and lyrics were tedious at best. Seriously, buy their CD. But please don’t go about praising them as being the second coming. They’re really not much better than Bon Jovi, if you think about it. It’s just your flavor of the day.

Van Winkle | 6/28/2007, 8:24 am EST

Jeez I must have been a sleep for a long time, I didn’t realize the only two bands left in the world were Bon Jovi and White Stripes. Maybe they should do a song together. Hey gang any suggestions on a remake?

44-DDs | 6/28/2007, 9:19 am EST

Lido you are way off the mark………..Jack White is by far one of the best guitarists in modern music………..there is nothing that he can’t do………..what makes him so great is his live performances……….go see him live before looking so retarded on here………a guy that can play 3 instruments during songs is impressive…..I cannot think of anyone else doing that in music today……….as far tas the comparisons to Clapton and Hendrix……..that is unfair because Jack has been around 10 years they have been around 30+…..give him 30 then come with comparisons…..their new album is amazing their best yet……..Jack’s creativity is a welcome addition to all the crap out there right now in music……..the guy has made a Stripes album every 2 years since 2001….and recently made a Raconteurs in between GBMS and this one and is gonna have a new Raconteurs one out real soon…….who else is doing that…..making qality music that wins awards up against great competition?…….not Bananna Pancakes

Cheesecrop | 6/28/2007, 9:28 am EST

It’s great to see both bands charting at the top. This is the kind of variety that we need. It’s funny how the people who gripe about rock today still yell over how everything sounds the same. There is a difference between these acts in particular.
By the way, Meg is both hot & a great drummer. Sure she’d like to hear both statements from time to time.

SATAN | 6/28/2007, 9:45 am EST

“Jack and Diane” by John Cougar Melloncamp. They would do that song perfectly

Michael | 6/28/2007, 10:18 am EST

BON JOVI ROCKS!!!!!!!

dvdmike | 6/28/2007, 11:03 am EST

I keep expecting the White Stripes to fade away. I mean, how much longer can they succeed with this two person show? Meg is technically awful and the garage-band blues should be old by now. Yet, this new album is so damn good – it’s frightening.

Scooby | 6/28/2007, 1:27 pm EST

Icky Thump deserves every bit of accolade it gets. Great album with a wide variety of sound, and a ton of talent. Just got back from the concert in Canada and it ROCKED. Thanks to the White Stripes for something great to listen to.. took long enough for the masses to figure that out. To those who don’t like? – go listen to something else and stop whining. No accounting for taste..

This Charming Manc | 6/28/2007, 4:57 pm EST

The only reason Bon Jovi got to number 1 is because of past glories and fans buy anything no matter how bad it is. I have not heard a good word about Bon Jovi’s album. If they were coming out as a new band now with this being there first album it wouldnt be in the top 100. White Stripes just get better and better.

Logan | 6/28/2007, 8:19 pm EST

The White Stripes are fucking great. They are so gutsy and innovative that no one can help but be drawn to their music and style. I have a feeling that this won’t be the last time we see the White Stripes at the top.

Lido | 6/29/2007, 10:21 am EST

Dearest 44-DD’s, please don’t resort to ad hominem attacks if you don’t like my message. In 1966, only 4 years after Eric Clapton was on the scene he was greatly respected for his skill and expertise, similarly Jimi Hendrix. If you want musical wizardry and expertise there are hundreds of famous guitar players and some who no one knows. Hey for fantastic on stage excitement how about Billy Sheehan and the guitar player for Talas would switch instruments mid song and you’d never hear it. HOW ABOUT THAT!!! I just get tired of fan-boys and idol worship. The worst thing about White Stripes for me is the guy’s voice. Seriously, unpleasant. Mind you, I’ve enjoyed bands as varied as Joy Division to John Lee Hooker, not technically good singers. FYI, I don’t like Bon Jovi, and I gave up worship of musicians a long time ago. I take each artist song by song basis. And for the most part, I just don’t like White Stripes. And to be honest, I have no effing clue as to why people do. They are a bad joke that has gone on way past its shelf-life. I don’t have to see Jack White live to know I don’t think his guitar playing is very good, I can hear it on record. As for those who say Meg is weak, she is primal. It’s a gimmick. But that’s not why I dislike them, they just sound like Spinal Tap to me. That’s all. They sound like a parody of what a rock band is. Maybe that’s the joke you all like. I just don’t get it. As for weak drummers, I forgive Mo Tucker too. But I would rather listen to even White Light/White Heat with Sister Ray in all its glory than White Stripes (and I think WL/WH is just a d*ck in the face of the the then “establishment”). I listened to Terry Gross and Fresh Air’s pod cast with Jack White and he seemed like a nice enough guy, but I still don’t like the band. As for the he Raconteurs, they aren’t that bad, but they’re not just “JACK”. They’re are still hundreds of other bands out there that are hundreds of times better. Jack got lucky. That’s it. Buy his records if you like it, I won’t. As for Banana Pancakes, it’s a nice tune, but I didn’t say I worshiped Jack Johnson either, I just said his version was a hell of a lot more palatable than the White Stripes version. While writing this, I think I’ve come to an understanding of why people like the White Stripes => someone said they were cool. That and RATT ain’t making CD’s anymore. Good luck to your love of Jack.

Yo Geez... (Lido) | 6/29/2007, 4:56 pm EST

Save your comments for the Summer of Love section. It is quite refreshing to see that a band like the White Stripes are selling albums. There is nobody that does what they do. Your long-winded diatribe laughable. Maybe you should see them live. There is nobody that can carry a song on his own like the great Jack White. Whether you like his pitch shifting guitar solos or not, the man can jam. As far as the drumming… it is no secret that she isn’t the greatest talent in the industry. They have sacraficed this for pure vibes… i.e. no click tracks in the studio.
No, no my friend.. the White Stripes are no joke and are here to stay.

Kayla | 6/30/2007, 3:18 am EST

Jack White is the Prince Of Rock (I’ll let you guess who the King is IMO). I’d do him in a heartbeat.

Jon Bon Jovi? Are you kidding me?? What redblooded woman wouldn’t want some of that gorgeous manmeat??? Who cares what he’s singing! OK… heehee… so I’m a superficial bitch. Sue me.

I love the White Stripes and think “Icky Thump” is definitely one of the year’s best, but calling Bon Jovi “horrible” is quite dumb. They may have more of a commercial appeal but they are damn talented and deserve any accolades thrown their way.

paul | 7/5/2007, 5:46 pm EST

jack white sucks and there is no way you can say he is the best at anything. He’s a scumbag. the only reason the white stripes are on top is cause there aren’t and decent band’s out there. so people keep buying this shit and other shit like bon jovi or metallica’s orchestra crap. there is nothing original about jack white, he stole his shit from led zeppelin and others. keep buying shit people and they will keep feeding it to you!!!

blurbur | 7/6/2007, 4:38 pm EST

It amuses me to see people comparing Jack White to Jimi Hendrix and other greats, when Jimi Hendrix had about 5 years in the limelight before his death, in which time he became recognized among guitar players (and many others) as one of the greatest guitarists and songwriters ever to walk this earth. I enjoy the White Stripes to some degree, and Jack White is a reasonably good guitarist, but comparing them/him to Jimi Hendrix, The Who, and Led Zeppelin just makes me laugh.

T-Nasty | 7/7/2007, 12:49 am EST

True kids are exaggerating Jack White’s legacy. (greatest, etc). He’s not the greatest obviously, but at the same time, the greats aren’t flawless. Led Zeppelin are notorious song poachers. Ask Atlantic records. But, I’m sure Paul here already knows all that, as well as most of you pesudo experts do. Ever heard Taurus by Spirit? Zeppelin is my fav band, but they’re not as original as you think. Respect Jack White. The man murders that octave pedal the way Page never could.

RR14 | 7/17/2007, 12:17 pm EST

All of you guys who think the White Stripes suck have never even listen to them before. All these other current bands sound the same there is no variety. I think the white stripes sound different and they are bringing the classical rock styles of Led Zeppelin back and I respect that. They are a great band, by their new album. Jack White is the best current guitar player right now.

Suck me | 7/31/2007, 8:25 pm EST

Jack White: Amazing, creative, and loud. every been to one of theyre concerts? Jack jams loud, the strange things he does on his guitar is beyond me, watch blackpool lights, its one of theirs DVDs tell me they suck after that.

Meg White: Ameteur but a whole lot of amazing greatness. she wails on her drums so dang hard i do not know how her arms are still connected. For a newcommer, shes a drummer like no other. shes hot too.

To me white stripes concerts are rare they dont come around to wisconsin often. i saw them at the rave in milwaukee and it blew my mind. thats why i am going back to see them at the Aragon in chicago on their new amazing icky thump album i connot wait.

chubsoda | 8/24/2007, 3:15 am EST

I am here in Iraq and our radio station plays the White Stripes. Being 45 years dol, I am thoroughly impressed with this group and song writing. The music he writes compares to 70s rock although with a new sound. I plan on buying the groups CDs when I return this fall.

the white strips raw loud soft rude pure honest creative everything real rockin rolls supposed to be about writing songs for the the sake of songs not some corporate crap that we get shoved down our throats every day jack and meg are saving real rockin roll for the people who get it awesome for the people who dont get it never will get it and i do fell sorry for them cause there stuck the hight school musical soundtrack or the fn nickelback cd or bon jovis county cd rock on jack and meg

Dort | 10/1/2007, 6:45 pm EST

I’m glad The White Stripes were at the top of the charts for a while. Better than having all the usual BS up there like, “NOW” whatever. But it puzzles me how anyone can by a Bon Jovi record. He makes soft, corny rock. I suppose I just don’t get it.
But as far as the Stripes go, Icky Thump is great, a real “rock and roll record,” whatever that means. I havent heard much of their earlier stuff, but I plan to check it out based of the sound of their new one.

Sean | 11/30/2007, 4:30 pm EST

Rolling stone keeps on digging their own grave. Jack White #17 greatest guitarist? He’s horrible. I saw them live, people just started leaving

aguss | 12/18/2007, 2:45 pm EST

i cant believe one of you wrote that would like jack’s kids have cancer! that’s mean, you wouldnt that happen to you ma, please show some respect, man!
besides, jack’s the best rocker i’ve ever seen, he’s an amazing songwriter and a perfect guitarrist and performer, he always makes you want more from the white stripes (and the raconteurs too)
hope meg can perform again and she’s always in my prayers to get better…

jwfan | 4/27/2009, 4:24 pm EST

Jack and Meg deserve all the success they’ve had and more. And for those of you who think jack is a bad guitarist… please take it back. You probably think that “justin king” is better but you’d be wrong. It’s about melody and rythm, not complexity and speed.

Talking Head | 9/9/2009, 1:29 pm EST

I don’t understand why people have such wildly differing views of Jack White and the white stripes. Maybe they’re just a certain taste.Personally i think the white stripes are one of the best bands of the last 10 years and Jack deserves all the success he is getting and obviously alot of ppl share my view judging by their album sales and reviews.
