Morrissey To Return To Warner Bros.? Neil Young Makes Us Wait, And More

6/26/07, 9:07 am EST

  • Will Morrissey return to Warner Bros., the record label he left in 1995? It’s at least a possibility, the former Smiths frontman says. “I presently have the option to tour for the remainder of 2007, or start a new album,” he said in a question and answer session for fans. “I don’t have a deal, but I have an offer from Warner Bros.”
  • Neil Young is making us all wait a little longer for the first volume of his much-anticipated Archives series, which will feature eight audio CDs and four DVDs of unheard material. The first installment was set to come out this fall, but has been moved to spring 2008.
  • Thurston Moore is set to release Trees Outside The Academy, his first official solo album since 1995’s Psychic Hearts this September. The record was recorded in J Mascis’ studio.
  • In response to the fact that The Donnas‘ last record, 2004’s Gold Medal, sold substantially less (87,000) than their previous album (2002’s Spend the Night sold 424,000) the band has left Atlantic to start their own label. The band will release its yet-untitled sixth album in September, on this now-nameless label.
  • After thrilling his fans with secret shows in London and New York, Paul McCartney will play a “surprise” show at Amoeba Records in Hollywood tomorrow, June 27.
  • Live Earth organizers have moved the South Africa concert to a more central venue after lagging ticket sales were partially blamed on concert-goers’ difficulty getting to the previous venue, which is located 45 minutes outside of Johannesburg. Now the show will take place at the city’s 18,000-capacity Coca-Cola Dome.
  • Today thousands of Internet radio stations have gone silent for twenty-four hours in protest of a recently announced hike in the royalty rates they pay to play music on their sites.

Internet radio is getting SCREWED – I’m sure it’s not the artists who are getting so greedy, but the labels.

You would think that any exposure would help the music biz (sell more Cds / downloads and concerts)

You couldn’t even mention that Yahoo news is reporting a possible Led Zeppelin reunion show in London to honor Ahmet Ertegun? This is the rumormill here…no shame if it’s not confirmed as long as it’s labeled so.

I agree Jungleland; I’m amazed at how the music industry expects people to hear new artists and new music when the majority of us no longer listen to anything but internet radio to fuel our hunger for new music. Once again, a swing and a miss for the record industry.

Actually news about good artists. Must be holding the Fall Out Boy update for the afternoon session.

Apparently Paul McCartney is strapped for cash because of the divorce and needs a breast reduction.

You know what makes me really angery is the fact that Ryan Adams new disc Easy Tiger came out today and possibly the best song on it is only available through i-tunes. Supposedly those of us who still buy the music in CD form shouldnt be able to have the whole thing unless we pony up and buy it digital also.
This whole music industry needs to figure out which way they are moving towards more and just do it already. Rather than split everything up so much that its such a hassle it makes people not want to spend their hard earned money on any of it. Its so much easier to steal everything nowadays that I might as well do it. Plus the fact that when you buy from Best Buy the exclusive song that is offered is only available on PC’s because they dont sell Mac’s so they try and gouge you there too. Come on record labels what happened to the good old days where you put out good music in one format and it was worth me buying it rather than waiting a day or two until after its released and sharking it off some guy who puts it out there for free on the internet!!
